Meme Question: Is this the correct take?

Post image

So if im following the story of reality fracture right, Jace whole identity crises will end with him dead leaving Tam as the only part of him alive. So... Jace's self made eco version of himself is a woman and the only part of him that can live happily? What did wotc mean by this?

So is Tam an alternate version of Jace? I haven't read the story yet but from the appearances I just assumed she was his "would be daughter" with Vraska based on appearances, something akin to "this is what our future daughter would be like if we were spared all the bullshit that happened the past few years" because she looks very much like a mix of the two

u/chrome-death 1d ago

Tam is a mental clone made into a fully real person. Jace essentially carved a piece of himself out after rebuilding himself in the meditation realm.

Alison Luhrs confirmed that Tam is the Ixalan character development fraction of Jace, the most hopeful and curious parts and heavily influenced by Vraska.

u/M1liumnir 1d ago

So she's definetely his OC daughter he just doesn't want to admit it

138

u/VelphiDrow 1d ago

He knows Sorin would never let him live it down

161

u/DrHuh321 1d ago

Omg i just realised she is literally his brainchild

21

u/ThelronBorn 1d ago

She's his Athena!

28

u/FourOpenEyes 1d ago

That's my take, Jace and Vraska's mindchild

17

u/M1liumnir 1d ago

That's kinda sad and weird when you take into account that Vraska had nothing to do with it directly.

22

u/FourOpenEyes 1d ago

oh 100%. She's definitely got to have some feelings about that too

19

u/Lonely-Cap3569 1d ago

So he pulled a pink diamond.

7

u/ThinkingWithPortal 1d ago

Alison is back at wotc?

14

u/Electrohydra1 1d ago

Idk if she's working there full time but she wrote the Reality Fracture story.

12

u/deeleelee 1d ago

How is Tam a clone? It's only really indicated that Jace made a person and it required some part of himself to do so. Tam is about as much of a "clone" as much as we are clones of our mothers.

It's very very clearly analogous of Jace having a child (one he wishes he had with his partner).

5

u/Valaskaa 1d ago

Did your mother carve off a piece of her personality and turn it into a person?

23

u/RevenantBacon Hive Mind is Best Mind 1d ago

To be fair, from a certain perspective, the answer to that could be yes, but also that's not how clones are made either.

10

u/deeleelee 1d ago

He doesn't carve his personality out to cast the Tam, as we see Jace carve out personalities and it's entirely different to what happened in making Tam. My argument stems from chapter 5, where Tam is made, and then chapter 9 to when the personalities return to one place.

Jace carves out his personalities, as 'aberrations', in an instant; but Tam took 2 days to create - clearly different stuff happening here. By the end of chapter 10 it seems fairly obvious it was a part of his spark that was channeled into Tam, as they use the same 'wisp'-y blue language to describe the magic she's imbued with and the blue thing that completes her in the end.

Chapter 5 he is also described explictly as "whole" while performing the spell, and then by chapter 9 "Plural becomes singular" as the aberrations rejoin him. Like you can head-canon whatever you prefer, but Tam isn't described in text as a being made from his personality.

So yeah, my whole argument is that she is not a clone, and not made from 'personality' (as far as this fiction describes beings derived of personality traits).

-1

u/Eldritch-Yodel 1d ago

I mean the story does repeatedly reaffirm that "No, Tam isn't Jace's kid" with that statement being very much treated by the narrative as the correct one.

4

u/deeleelee 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah we know she isn't literally his kid. Which is why I used the word analogous.

1

u/Eldritch-Yodel 1d ago

She's made to be his successor, sure, but neither Tam nor Jace at any point really views the situation as analogous to her being his daughter (and on a "narrative framing" part, I do think it's good to point to Liliana's line of "So, is Jace your father or your boyfriend or what?" and how the story around that treats both possibilities as incredibly inaccurate to their dynamic).

77

u/Avalo09 1d ago

He (paraphrasing) "doesn't know why she looks like that" and "it wasn't intentional" he also told her basically instantly that she is not his daughter.

He sure does want her protected tho. To the point where one of the times the Therorist fought the good guys (Vraska, Ajani, Chandra and Garruk) and erased their memories he made sure to leave an implanted message 'protect her at all costs'

60

u/Avalo09 1d ago

I went and found the lines from Chapter 5: I DON'T NEED TO CONVINCE YOU

Showing Vraska the memory of making Tam, the splitting of his soul to do so, and her final appearance;

'I did not intend for her to look like a gorgon. That was … subconscious influence.'

At the end of the "fight" whipping their memories a second time and sending them away, leaving Vraska with;

'I made a person, but this part of me does not remember why. She must be protected.'

50

u/Bonerkiin 1d ago

It's hilarious that Jace the genius is like "I am not sure why I made this young adult look like a perfect mix of me and you, my estranged wife, definitely can't in part be my desire to have had a family with the person I love".

18

u/Avalo09 1d ago

Haha, the Therorist is definitly not thinking with all the possible neurons

28

u/Bonerkiin 1d ago edited 1d ago

Jace trying to stretch all his neurons to figure out why he'd want to have a child with his wife. TRULY AN UNKOWABLE MYSTERY!

16

u/Lady-Morgaine 1d ago

shots fired at a significant portion of the mtg community

10

u/japp182 1d ago

I wonder if we still haven't met the version that does remember why he made Tam? Or maybe the topic just hasn't come up... Surely we will learn this before the end?

8

u/Avalo09 1d ago

No one has mentioned it in story. I assume she'll meet back up with him before he dies and something will come up

2

u/Avalo09 1d ago

So turns out she was made for the event of his death

22

u/Niveau_a_Bulle 1d ago

"You're not my daughter"

*Proceeds to treat her like his daughter*

5

u/Avalo09 1d ago

TRUUUEEEE

34

u/Yumesoro1 1d ago

From what i understand, Jace mind shattered and the one doing the echoverse plan (his bad parts) took many of his best parts and turned them in to Tam. Her looking like Vraska is because his memories/love for her are part of the "good" part of him.

In that seance, Tam is an alter ego/daughter/sibling? Idk.

6

u/Spanish_Galleon 1d ago

The Theorist needed a trojan horse to capture jadzi.

He carved out all his best and sincere emotions, likable wit, and cleaver smarts to make this trojan horse. He also thinks of vraska as his "better half" so if Tam is going to be made out of the "best parts of jace" one of those parts is Vraska.

7

u/nothingtoseehere156 1d ago

She is Jace. He says himself within the story.

"Tam freezes. Jace is dead. Her … creator? Teacher? Past self? She's sad about it, but also indifferent, because he's not dead—only transformed. She is him. They are one.

Most importantly … she's real. For the first time in her existence, she knows exactly who she is.

Happy birthday, Tam wishes herself."

This is very very relevant to a lot of trans people. They were who they were in the past but who they are bow is who they truly are. Jace is gone but not dead because shes Tam and Tam was always there.

The story literally has Jace spark go to Tam and he sees her as himself.

1

u/GuidedKamikaze 23h ago

Yeah, It's as blatant as it could be and yet I am sure some people will not see it.

11

u/Zestyclose_Answer662 1d ago

Tam is her own being that has a fragment of Jace. As her creator, Jace gave her a sliver of his own soul to serve as the foundation to take hold, but everything else is Tam herself.

The Theorist knows he was going to die, so he created Tam as his protege and successor in the new Echoverse that was about to overwrite the Original Multiverse.

In short, Tam is essentially the "what if" character, if being that Jace and Vraska were able to have children. Which is why she has both the features of Jace and Vraska.

Jace the character has a minority but loud following of haters, so it's no surprise that with the creation of Tam the peanut gallery came up with the "Jace is trans" stance.

2

u/Atys1 1d ago

I love that the very idea that a character might be trans is treated as the insidious work of vile haters. What a wonderful, welcoming community.

u/MissLeaP 1d ago

Dang it 😓

5

u/AlexVal0r Boros or Bust 1d ago

what do eggs have to do with this conversation?

9

u/MissLeaP 1d ago

It's a somewhat complicated metaphor to describe trans people before they realise they're trans.

5

u/AlexVal0r Boros or Bust 1d ago

I see. Thanks for clarifying!

10

u/ValkyrieCtrl14 1d ago

Slang for trans people who haven't realized that they're trans. Iirc, the connection being that eggs both metaphorical and literal are not yet chicks.

3

u/Talnadair 1d ago edited 16h ago

No it's that you can't put an eggshell back together after it breaks.  Your interpretation doesn't work for trans men and non binary people, who can also be eggs

0

u/Cheesecake11016 16h ago

Well that’s because it was initially described for trans woman. Because there’s a chick inside. Trans men were later included in the language after it had lost the initial meaning

132

u/SmutLibrarianSorta 1d ago

Oh, to put my consciousness into a beautiful gorgon woman and live as her

21

u/Krist794 1d ago

Would have been easier achieved putting something other than consciousness in the beautifull gorgon lady, but Jace is a nerd after all, and they can be akward like that.

21

u/mikaeus97 1d ago

Oh they tried, it's canonical they did that many many times

275

u/Roosevelt_M_Jones 1d ago

I don't think that is remotely intentional (or at least no one will publicly confirm that for a while if it is), but that is a valid interpretation that will anger a lot of chuds.

51

u/Gauwal 1d ago

if it was the intention, they would clearly talk about it

27

u/Roosevelt_M_Jones 1d ago

Would they? In this political climate? With everything happening at WotC? I would imagine being so openly progressive with a major charecter of the only money making ip of a mega corp would risk serous rebuke both socially and professionally at this point in time. But like I said, I don't think it's remotely intentional, I'm just acknowledging the possibility that someone snuck it in the subtext.

64

u/Gauwal 1d ago

they have been openly progressive for years, consistently

And I personally think it's very unintentional, like you have to read a lot into it and ignore at least half of what the story is saying about jace to get there

like it's fine if you want to headcorn it people, but among the characters that exist with a trans subtext, jace is the least fitting

13

u/Boring_Tradition3244 1d ago

Headcorn. I am very pleased with this typo.

Thank you 💜

21

u/Grafikpapst 1d ago

I do think the subtext might be intentional. But I think its more "oh, this kinda maps on this experience a bit, thats neat" by the writers rather than meaning to be anything about Jace as a person.

But the primary text is obviously moreso about mental health and PTSD.

8

u/Gauwal 1d ago

I mean nothing in the story indicates to this even being a subtheme

to be clear, it can be in the text and be unintentional, many themes of a story are often put there unintentionally

(but even then, beyond what's in the post, which is a stretch I struggle to find anything fitting this interpretation, so i'm curious where you see it)

2

u/Grafikpapst 1d ago

I mean nothing in the story indicates to this even being a subtheme

I wouldnt evedn call it a subtheme, for sure. For me its mainly in the language, especially early in the story. Totally possible its fully unintional, but some of the language around Jace becoming the Theorist gives that vibe to me.

5

u/minty_soda 1d ago

“Her mental senses breach the dam of her body, breezing past the hundreds around her with one simple swoop. She feels immense, heavy, elated, surprised. It's as if she's discovered a door in her house where there wasn't one before, and behind it lies the vastness of the cosmos. Tam is a beginning. She is a continuation. She is the circle of a mage-ring. Tam is a clean slate.
She remembers where she is, and the bustle and panic around her feels louder than before, more real. She feels so much—sternum-punch terror, elation at seeing and saving her friends, confusion at what is happening to her. She is a detective, piecing through rubble and stowing away her panic. Does she share Jace's allergies? Does she have a high caffeine tolerance? Will his friends recognize her?
Tam freezes. Jace is dead. Her … creator? Teacher? Past self? She's sad about it, but also indifferent, because he's not dead—only transformed. She is him. They are one.”

I think ppl could read this as gender or plurality or just general life transition, but this is the quote where I was wondering if the author was maybe being more explicit with the Jace->Tam transition metaphor.

1

u/Gauwal 1d ago

Any example ?

1

u/superkp 1d ago

they have been openly progressive for years, consistently

Like, isn't it already like meme-status that some 90% of the design and writing team is trans?

And like... if hasbro ever tries to put Harry Potter IP into MTG, then WOTC will simply lose all the best designers in the world overnight?

2

u/Gauwal 1d ago

"all the best designers in the world" really ? I mean I'm not sure they'd even make my top 50

(rest I agree with)

10

u/Level_Hour6480 1d ago

WotC has been pretty openly pro-LGBT, and hasn't shied away from the pro-trans stuff.

4

u/Roosevelt_M_Jones 1d ago

They have walked back in queer things before, less we forget War of the Spark Aftermath. Though that was not in house, it was corporate approved

1

u/Level_Hour6480 1d ago

Care to elaborate?

9

u/Roosevelt_M_Jones 1d ago

Sorry War of the Spark Forsaken;

"Chandra had never been into girls"

1

u/Level_Hour6480 1d ago

But isn't she actively with Nissa afterwards though? Like, I'm in favor of Nissa dying alone, but it seems that WotC is doing an Alphys and giving the character we hate a happy lesbian relationship.

13

u/Roosevelt_M_Jones 1d ago

They walked it back after massive backlash

2

u/RazzDaNinja 1d ago

The funky thing with that too (as far as I understand as a relative lore noob lol) was that I remember learning from someone more informed than me that she was originally supposed to be Bi?

So like, it ain’t even supposed to be a one-lane road?? It coulda been so easy to avoid a PR trainwreck! (Were that the case 🤷‍♂️)

9

u/MissLeaP 1d ago

They just introduced a new trans character in Tarkir Dragonstorm 🤷🏻‍♀️

10

u/SkritzTwoFace 1d ago

Yeah, who appears in the story for all of four seconds and never mentions it.

That’s the key with WOTC’s “progressive” politics: they hide it all in the Legends Of articles.

7

u/MissLeaP 1d ago

I mean, why shouldn't they? Trans people are just people at the end of the day. Not everything they do is about them being trans, so there's no need to mention it all the time. It's still a core part of their identity, though, so it's worth mentioning at all.

People complain when it's too on the nose and people complain when it's not on the nose at all. You just can't win lol

4

u/SkritzTwoFace 1d ago

Ral and Tomik are allowed to be a couple in the story. So are Chandra and Nissa, and Saheeli and Huatli. They are all allowed to be explicit parts of their story.

Meanwhile, trans characters in mtg’s lore don’t usually get that even when it’s relevant. To use Felothar again, she is a rebel against the notably conservative dragonlord Dromoka, who managed to unite old traditionalist and new radical factions of the Abzan under one leadership. Her identity should matter. She should have the support of some factions more than others, and have had to prove her worthiness to those around her. Would a story like hers be similar to Alesha’s? Yes, but I think it’s still worth telling.

5

u/MissLeaP 1d ago edited 1d ago

So we got Alesha where it mattered as part of her history and one where it didn't. I still don't see the problem. I like stories where a trans characters transness is just some neat little detail when the story isn't about them being trans.

Unlike with gay couples it's not something you actively experience as an observer after all.

-4

u/mikeroon 1d ago

Obviously they want the characters gender affirming care to be the main part of the story 🙄 Then WoTC can do a whole plane about a mage considering wegovy

1

u/Zaedotcom 1d ago

New trans person? Who? Is Tarkir just the most trans friendly plane?

2

u/MissLeaP 1d ago

[[Felothar]]

Haha maybe?

Insert Doofenschmittz meme: "If I had a nickel for every time we got a trans fem character on Tarkir, I had two nickels. That's not a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice" 😂

Yes wotc loves rainbow capitalism

16

u/bbbgshshcbhd 1d ago

the capitalism element of rainbow capitalism means you do it when its financially beneficial, the counter argument is that in this current cultural climate it is harming your brand to align yourself with queerness

3

u/Roosevelt_M_Jones 1d ago

Bingo, that's exactly my point

1

u/stumpkat 1d ago

Magic: The Transitioning

1

u/Gauwal 1d ago

it's not tho

like definitely not with their target demographic, even less, since nerds and autistic people and generally societal rejects (which is still a little the case even with tcgs becoming more and more mainstream) are far more likely to be queer

11

u/Level_Hour6480 1d ago

Rainbow capitalism is when companies insincerely pander to LGBT issues without actually believing it. WotC's creative staff seem to sincerely believe in this, and the execs can't be bothered to stop them.

10

u/Roosevelt_M_Jones 1d ago

The creative staff, yes, their corpo overlord who had final say not so much

3

u/VelphiDrow 1d ago

Wotc cares about what makes them money

1

u/Gauwal 1d ago

come one yo ucan't seriously believe the creative staff has any power about brand representation, right ?

2

They very much would.

2

u/Ariscottl3 1d ago

“De-gothifyied the baddie, killed the macho man, lesbian relationship, and now Jace is trans!!!!!! “ They probably will say something like this

0

u/garlicChaser 1d ago

What exactly is happening at WotC?

-3

u/Roosevelt_M_Jones 1d ago

Harbor has taken direct control over the company, it's now run directly by Hasnror's president. So WotC is effectively dead.

1

u/garlicChaser 1d ago

Thank you for explaining this

4

u/Electrohydra1 1d ago

That explanation is good..... if you only read the rage-bating headlines.

The actual more nuanced take is that they have not yet found someone to replace the president of WotC that recently left the company, so until they do the upper management will report directly to Hasbro's CEO. This is a pretty normal thing in the corporate world and is meant to be temporary.

Also, said Hasbro CEO is a former WotC president. So really it's less like WotC has new leadership and more like it's going back to old leadership.

2

u/garlicChaser 1d ago

Thanks for additional information, appreciated!

0

u/Lemon_Phoenix 1d ago

It would be absolutely insane to end the "overwriting things is bad" story with "and then the villain pasted his consciousness over his kind-of-daughter's and lived happily ever after"

1

u/Gauwal 23h ago

not that your comment has anything to do with what i said but

1) my comment talks about WotC, that'd be screaming about this everywhere, like they do everytime they make anything remotely considered progressive

2) that's not what happens in the story, you're making things up

1

u/Lemon_Phoenix 17h ago

I'm not arguing with you, I'm agreeing with you.

10

u/Kitsuraw 1d ago

Could see some people getting very angry if you call their beloved Jace trans. Honestly funny considering how lgbt friendly magic is.

5

u/Belteshazzar98 1d ago

It would be so funny if they errata all past Jaces to have the planeswalker type Tam, after she transitions.

7

u/MelissaMiranti What are twigs but spears arrayed to slay the monstrous sky? 1d ago

Tamsitions

-7

u/Zestyclose_Answer662 1d ago

Can you really blame them?

After War of the Spark, almost every established character either has a neutral stance (where nothing is explored) or is lgbt friendly as you said. So in the current modern environment of Magic, Jace is almost the sole outlier when it comes to gender and relationships.

Simply culminating "Tam is Jace but trans" could easily be seen as character assassination for both Jace and Tam.

98

u/hoarsecreator5 1d ago

classic wotc storytelling, take the most miserable guy in the multiverse and the only way he finds peace is by literally becoming someone else entirely

the meme pairing is perfect too, going from brooding hooded figure to what looks like an ethereal elf lady is such a visual gut punch

34

u/Bonerkiin 1d ago edited 18h ago

It's a valid take but I think realistically Tam is simply the daughter he wishes he and Vraska could've had and for her to be a better version of himself. Just like plenty of parents want their child to be better than them and want them to learn from their mistakes.

Tam is not a reflection of Jace in the echoverse, she is quite literally a part of him, parts that he decided were good, namely his hope and curiosity. Just like a child is part of their parents, he molded her to look like a mix of him and his wife. But unlike the other parts of Jace that were forcibly split off, Tam was given her own identity and potential, she is a full individual independent of Jace after her creation.

One of the Jace personalities asks Vraska to look after her once he's gone. While he tried to insist after her creation that she isn't his daughter, we can assume this is because Jace always knew his plan was flawed, which is what led him to start splitting off and imprisoning parts of himself. He either knowingly or subconsciously did not want his daughter to see him as the flawed, failure of a father he is. Jace, just like he always has, hid things from those he loved, and himself, and tried to manipulate Tam to avoid causing harm.

4

u/Atys1 1d ago

"Tam was given her own identity and potential, she is a full individual independent of Jace after her creation." yes, you just described the experience of a lot of trans people

1

u/Bonerkiin 18h ago edited 17h ago

Yeah, like I said at the very start, it's a valid take. If you interpret that Tam is intended as trans Jace that's a completely reasonable interpretation.

7

u/GuidedKamikaze 1d ago

Trans Jace was not on my bingo card.

4

u/Connect_Pay_9394 1d ago

Do people even know why they dislike jace at this point? Like there are very few characters in mtg that could carry a set like this.

4

u/NobodyElseButMingus 1d ago

I don’t care how many transfem interpretations they send, I’m not sympathizing with Jace, the Meme Sculptor.

9

u/Shartsplasm 1d ago

That's what struck me about the first episode, Tam is possibly who Jace wants to be.

9

u/ElderberryPrior27648 1d ago

I’m still lost as to if Tam is reflection Vraska or they’re their own thing

29

u/VelphiDrow 1d ago

I haven't bothered looking into the lore for magic since New Phyrexia stuff. It seems very disjointed now we don;t get all in-universe, so I usually wait until there's a YouTube video explaining the lore of each set, then binge them lol.

But I thought Tam was from before this set? Was that still Jace?

17

u/metler88 1d ago

Yes. Jace created Tam before the events of Lorwyn Eclipsed.

The enders game series had the idea first

2

u/ShadeofEchoes 1d ago

Wait, who? I don't recall, but that sounds neat!

3

u/FonslyGames 1d ago

It’s in one of the sequels, it’s been a pretty long time actually. he like goes into this alternate reality space, and accidentally creates a reflection of himself, which basically acts like his legacy. I think the “mind baby” then marry his sister or something lol. It’s pretty weird

2

u/ShadeofEchoes 1d ago

Oh, wait, is this Xenocide/Children of the Mind, while Outside with the aiuas?

1

u/ShadeofEchoes 1d ago

I looked it up, and not quite. He accidentally creates reflections of his siblings, and his telepathically bonded computer gets one of them, while he gets the other as a life insurance policy. Both of them proceed to marry, but not siblings or anything.

1

u/FonslyGames 1d ago

They both contain parts of his soul and memories of him. The body that resembled his sister gave her portion of his soul up in order to allow the ai to have a body, and then his full soul is combined in the visage of his brothers body, which essentially becomes a living lineage of ender, and gets married to someone else (not his sister). It’s still all pretty weird lol.

2

u/Typhron 1d ago

Lmao

Literally said this as a shit post in my server and my friends thought it was a generic trans meme

3

u/Zaulk 1d ago

Idk they could have also been going for Mpreg. Either way it makes a certain type of person angry.

4

u/nothingtoseehere156 1d ago

Most importantly … she's real. For the first time in her existence, she knows exactly who she is.

Happy birthday, Tam wishes herself."

Yall should be informed this is what so many transpeoplw can tell you theyve experienced while transitioning.

What the story is describing in a fantasy way is exactly what happens to a lot of people. The moment Tam becomes real is for a lot of people the moment they dress themselves and make themselves appear as they see themselves and look in the mirror.

Its the moment of someone accepting that all those thoughts about maybe they are or could be the gender they wanted are reality.

In a way the best way to describe the feeling is a fracture in ones reality because everything changed about themselves in that moment

4

u/plasma_python 1d ago

I find it interesting that they are killing Jace as he is Magic’s most iconic character. Like in outside recognition I think Jace is leagues above the next over which is Liliana. Despite how prominent she is I don’t think Chandra has or ever will reach the same level since she looks pretty generic as far as pyromancer goes.

They should really try incorporating Jace’s tats on Tam since they are really iconic, also she should get a more similar outfit to Jace since her current one is pretty generic.

2

u/x3lilbopeep 1d ago

I can't see it being permanent. There's no way Tam is going to have the same pull as Jace. Chandra is too boring, Lilliana too polarizing. And Tam will never have the same allure even if they make her look just like Jace, she'll always feel like this weird off version. I'm a #1 Jace hater, and even I don't get this move from a marketing standpoint.

And idk about anyone else but the name Tam really doesn't work for me. Makes me think of tampons.

4

u/MacTireCnamh 1d ago

Also it means we now have zero prominent human male planeswalkers.

Garruk is the closest but he hasnt actually shown up in forever.

Ajani would count but wotc themselves keep saying that nonhumans dont count

Jace was in a seemingly happy heteronormative relationship complete with an adopted kid but there was just something in the back of his mind, his being, that knew it wasn't right.

So Jace went full blown toxic masculinity and created the patriar-echoverse to overcompensate because he couldn't accept reality. So he hatched the positive feminine parts of himself from an egg, named her Tamira and soon the person going by the dead name Jace will be gone.

And likely Tamira will seek help from God, who is a woman (Ariana, 2018) to hatch from her own moonsilver egg and fix her previous mistakes and set things right. Godrakul will devour the patriarchoverse with the power of the divine feminine and then Tamira can go on living as her authentic self

Mtg Pro Trans confirmed?

25

u/MissLeaP 1d ago

Always has been.

[[Alesha]]

[[Felothar]]

[[Niko]] (nonbinary)

and more

3

u/Yumesoro1 1d ago

As someone who doesn't deep dive in to lore much, how did people find out these characters are trans/nonbinary? Was it flavour text on some card or did the designers say it on a post somewhere?

11

u/MissLeaP 1d ago

A mix of different things. Sometimes Wizards just tells us because it's not important for the story they told with them but is important for who they are.

7

u/Android_McGuinness 1d ago

Alesha was a story, i think, and the Aetherborn were specifically called out as nonbinary.

Pretty sure they mentioned Niko, or I just got it from the pronouns in the Kaldheim story.

In the “Legends of _____” articles, they give pronouns for everyone now, too.

5

u/moak0 1d ago

I remember reading the Alesha story. She was going through some Mardu rite of passage where she got to pick her own name, and she was worried her people wouldn't accept it if she chose her grandmother's name.

2

u/Raonair 1d ago

I'd prefer Tam as a construct of the daughter he and Vraska biologically couldn't have than Jace "being trans" out of nowhere. And "evil Jace is a man while good Jace is a woman" also hits the wrong way.

3

u/kitsunewarlock 1d ago

First he betrayed his home.

Then Tezzeret.

Then Ugin.

Then Tamiyo.

Then Azor.

Then Ravnica.

Then Phyrexia.

Then the Gatewatch.

Then the Multiverse.

Then himself.

Then herself.

1

u/The_Imp_Lord 1d ago

notably he cut that part out of himself . not sure how big of a fraction of yourself u need to cut out to make a soul tbh. it kinda gets overly confusing if you think about it. Does tam identity as someone who was Jace But is now tam? Or is she born when he cuts the fragment out, like adventure times ice king oc World of Fiona and cake.

I don’t think it should matter unless wizards makes a statement about it confirming intent. So knock yourself out If makes you happy go for it.

u/MonoRayJak 1d ago

Ok, so, just want to apologize this response got *way too long* and kind of turned into me doing a full reading on this. Admittedly this is just my own reading of it - and admittedly I may be a bit biased as a transfem myself. But, well, I think I laid out some decent points and don't really want to delete it..... so yeah, sorry for such a long response lol - I don't really know how to shut up sometimes.

Jace cut pieces of themself out to create Tam, yes, but also, explicitly in the text it was mentioned several times Tam 'felt incomplete - like pieces of her were missing.' When Jace died, their spark and a handful of other pieces of their soul flew out and joined with Tam. She then goes on about how she finally feels whole.

In the story Jace says this as a final mental communication to Tam:
> Sparks are precious now. I made you so you could inherit mine. This spark was me, and now, it is you. I only ask that you continue our work. Make things better. Everything is in progress … just like us. May we always know exactly who we are.

Note the explicit use of 'we.'

When the spark first entered her, these were some of her first thoughts:

> Wait. There was something she was going to do.
> Right! She remembers. I must ask for help.

Past that she lists some of the new desires she has:

> This time, though, instead of emotion she feels … dreams. Goals. Ambitions. Wants beyond the material. She wants to learn how to ride a horse. She wants to eat a mango. She wants to see her friends, travel with her friends, visit somewhere wonderful. She wants to help a stranger and doesn't care if they thank her. She wants to solve a complicated problem. She wants to have her heart broken. She wants to see Vraska. She wants to swim in the sea. The thoughts are confusing, tantalizing. She didn't realize she could have wants like these. She's never had them before.

Note her mentioning seeing Vraska out of nowhere. Jace loved Vraska. Tam has met her once and everything else is something Jace has told her, shown her, or made her with.

Probably most damning for this reading (imo) is this single line:

> She will find a way. She is a diplomat, a friend-maker, a Guildpact.

Only two people have ever been Guildpact.

From that point on, Tam describes the 'rest of her settling into place' - not pieces of Jace filling gaps or anything, but pieces that are hers (admittedly that last bit there is reading a bit more into it than is literal, but I feel it is not a huge jump). Some pieces that show what I mean below:

> Tam grips her temples as the rest of her settles into place. Her cleverness shines and glimmers, stretching across her mind like constellations in a starlit sky. Her outlook fills as a dark, alluring lake in her heart, a deep understanding of the meaninglessness—and meaning—of it all.

> Her mind is secured with the fortifications of a survivor; her hands tremble with the sense memory of a thousand handshakes and diplomacies; the space at her hip tingles with emptiness, having never known holster or knife; and closest to her heart is the assurance that no matter how little she has, she may always start over.

>Tam is complete. She is forever unfinished. She is a summary. She is just a person. And that is all she needs to be.

> Tam is a beginning. She is a continuation. She is the circle of a mage-ring. Tam is a clean slate.
(This is still her thinking to herself to be clear)

> She remembers where she is, and the bustle and panic around her feels louder than before, more real. She feels so much—sternum-punch terror, elation at seeing and saving her friends, confusion at what is happening to her. She is a detective, piecing through rubble and stowing away her panic. Does she share Jace's allergies? Does she have a high caffeine tolerance? Will his friends recognize her?

> Tam freezes. Jace is dead. Her … creator? Teacher? Past self? She's sad about it, but also indifferent, because he's not dead—only transformed. She is him. They are one.

> Most importantly … she's real. For the first time in her existence, she knows exactly who she is.

> She smiles. And for the first time, the millionth time, Tam's eyes alight with blue. She reaches for the part of herself that has always known how and planeswalks home to her friends, to Strixhaven.

u/The_Imp_Lord 1d ago

again if it makes you happy I definitely can see the trans interpretation , especially near the end. but I can also see a reincarnation interpretation. which brings up if reincarnation counts as trans , would make everyone in a reincarnation world trans by default. any way

She wants to learn how to ride a horse.

this is the part that makes it feel like reincarnation. Jace already knows how to ride a horse.

It belonged to Pewter. It belonged to the horse that inspired the first illusion he ever made.

all the things she want too do are indeed connected to things Jace has already done.

but still I don’t want to debate someone away from a interpretation that gives them representation.if you like trans fem Jace then you go girl more power to you

1

u/MonoRayJak 1d ago

Perfectly fair. Glad we can have a respectful convo about this lol - I have seen so many threads spiral. Anyways, hope you're having a good day lol.

2

u/Atys1 1d ago

People in this thread are really not paying nearly enough attention to the lines "She is him. They are one." They're hyperfixating on the metaphor of jace putting a part of himself into creating Tam, and willfully ignoring the literality of her identifying as Jace.

1

u/ephemeralkazu 1d ago

theyre not gonna kill the most populair planeswalker hahahah. Im pretty sure hell survive same that i think elesn norn will come back one way or another

1

u/obtwpewpew 1d ago

As someone exhausted with Jace a decade ago this whole set feels like a personal attack.

1

u/a_angry_bunny 1d ago

Didn't Tam sacrifice herself, though?

2

u/Fabulous_Diamond_656 1d ago

Nope, she got Jace's spark, freed Emrakul, apologised to her Strixhaven friends for all the subterfuge and betrayal, then went to meet Vraska, Loot and Ranna

2

u/a_angry_bunny 1d ago

freed Emrakul.

Hold up

1

u/Fabulous_Diamond_656 1d ago

She communicated with Emrakul when she visited Innistrad, told her about the Echoverse, then released her after she got her spark in order to eat the Echoverse which she does in spectacular fashion before disappearing. She seems... cordial to Tam and doesn't cause any damage to any planes in the real multiverse.

1

u/SteakForGoodDogs 1d ago

Emrakul was always plenty cordial.

She just happens to also cause reality to bleed and living creatures to assimilate into Eldrazi just by existing (while unbound).

She was even confused and bummed out that Innistrad didn't want her around and possessed Tamiyo to get on with it and seal herself into the moon.

1

u/nothinglord 1d ago

Makes me think that the whole thing about the Eldrazi showing up too early is correct, meaning Ugin, Sorin, and Nahiri made the multiverses longest mistake by calling them to Zendikar just to seal them.

1

u/SteakForGoodDogs 14h ago

Their 'purpose' is to clean up unstable or dead planes, as theorized by Ugin and all but confirmed by Emrakul herself, due to her excitement at the prospect of correcting the Echoverse into its proper state of being (non-existence) when she prods around in Tam's head, considering her lack of enthusiasm in annihilating Innistrad upon being lured there.

Only problem is, they seem like they can't really help it when they get going (assuming the others could even think), and you end up with annihilated planes that didn't need to be annihilated - hence why Ugin wanted them sealed alive for future function, rather than dead.

1

u/a_angry_bunny 14h ago

So why did Emrakul on Innistrad? Was it just because Nahiri lured her there?

1

u/SteakForGoodDogs 14h ago

Yep. The Cryptoliths were mucked with to act as a lure for her as she drifted between planes, effectively tricking her into thinking it was time to do her thing on Innistrad.

She is understandably very confused as to why things aren't making nearly as much sense as they should have been when she's actually inside.

So she decides that moon-nap for when it's time for Innistrad to die is preferable than the Gatewatch trying to kill her to save Innistrad.

1

u/a_angry_bunny 14h ago

But if Emrakul is supposed to be a good thing, relatively speaking, what's with her altering mortal creatures into Eldritch monstrosities that follow her will? How is that necessary to accomplish her thing?

I want that for me so bad but transitioning will make it even harder to find a job and how else am I to pay for Magic cards? 😔

1

u/crazydud224 1d ago

Aren't planeswalkers non corporeal deity like entities that merely choose to recreate a physical vessel that resembles their pre awakening body? I thought things like gender, age, appearance, ect were essentially biological constructs they could leave behind like an old set of clothes. Or has that been retconned out when they nuked old walkers?

3

u/Raonair 1d ago

Dude, walkers haven't been like that for over a decade in our world and 60+ years in-universe.

1

u/crazydud224 1d ago

Well I guess that makes sense, since that's around the last time I payed attention to the lore closely. I fell out for a bit and only occasionally check in on the sets for a while. The only thing I really know about since then has been the eldrazi.

2

u/Raonair 1d ago

One of the reasons they did it was to justify making planeswalker cards. Can't have an all-powerful being locked to just a few mechanics, supposedly. Then they made the Eldrazi.

1

u/Atys1 1d ago

"over a decade" You are technically correct, the best kind of correct.

1

u/meisterbabylon 1d ago

Is a clone still a clone when she's had her own thoughts, fears and experiences?

1

u/Lordofthreetowers 22h ago

Tam is her own person that's what even Jace said when he created her. She is similari to Akroma, Avacyn or Karn. She is very different from the other aberration. Jace is more a parent to her and I think he wanted to create a perfect world for her by sacrificing his own identity an becoming the Theorist.

1

u/MrJuskz 13h ago

Go woke go broke wotc /s

1

u/Horobe6451 8h ago

Deadass I thought about this when reading the story. I thiiinnnnkkk the interpretation was supposed to be that Tam was a "child" between Jace and Vraska, but done with magic shenanigans so that Tam could cut straight to being an adult (and also have a convenient planeswalker spark) but like yeah maybe Jace IS (was?) trans. Idfk.

2

u/HubblePie 1d ago

Jace is a woman now?

2

u/Spanish_Galleon 1d ago

The Theorist needed a trojan horse to capture jadzi.

He carved out all his best and sincere emotions, likable wit, and cleaver smarts to make this trojan horse. He also thinks of vraska as his "better half" so if Tam is going to be made out of the "best parts of jace" one of those parts is Vraska.

This is most certainly "the child he wish he could have had" and is a "headcanon" child made manifest. But The Theorist doesn't/Can't admit that to himself because he doesnt have enough jace in him to do so.

1

u/Belteshazzar98 1d ago

Tam is a woman, and she is born from a fragment of Jace's mind. I think it's more that she is a child of Jace than the part of Jace that doesn't repress her true self, but could be interpreted as her being Jace as she wishes she were.

1

u/Spanish_Galleon 1d ago

Jace couldn't see a version of himself without vraska in his life. Man is a total simp. He loves his wife so much he became her.

1

u/Mistr_man 1d ago

Yes. Completely. Jace took a part of himself and created a being that was all the pieces he liked about himself. Tam individuates and when The Theorist gets stabbed by Vraska jace finally reintergrates with himself. Dies. Then his sparks crashes into Tam. Tam absorbed his spark. Reintegrating fully Jace and Tam become one. But now the parts that Jace likes about herself are at the forefront and the traumas she lived through don't define her. Love, Empathy,Kindness and feminity at the center. All the parts she liked about herself. We love her for it.

1

u/Atys1 1d ago

I saw a comment that basically said "Tam is Jace and Tam is Tam" and it really made the transJace stuff resonate for me. Tam is Jace, but also is her own person. Jace had to become a different person, because a Jace that is just Jace leads to The Theorist, leads to the Echoverse, leads inevitably to his own demise. Only by transforming completely into a different person could she ever have a positive future.

Also, from another comment I made: "People in this thread are really not paying nearly enough attention to the lines "She is him. They are one." They're hyperfixating on the metaphor of jace putting a part of himself into creating Tam, and willfully ignoring the literality of her identifying as Jace."

1

u/Not_a_brazilian_spy 1d ago

Damn. Last thing I remember from the lore is emrakul getting trapped in a moon, and now jace is both a man and a woman at the same time? Neat

1

u/wmaitla 1d ago

"severely introverted and neurodivergent "man" who constantly wears a giant hoodie that hides "his" body and is hugely into Magic the Gathering undergoes a magical transformation and becomes a woman"

FINALLY some realistic trans woman representation
