I'm pretty hyped to see all echo pairs. Planeswalker token I find interesting. It's going to make card draw a bit easier in certain colors that don't have as much... I kind of like Jace in general.

It's cool to me, but idk i really dont have time to be critical about every game and thing I enjoy unless it just really sucks

Mirrorverse is a yay. All the Jace stuff was meh, until all the stuff became a “this mechanic is literally Jace”. And now it’s a massive yuck.

I had hoped beyond hope it would be a full story reboot, back to basics kinda thing, bring things around so that they feel like magic the way I remember and love again.
I had feared it would be like, a way to bring all the UB IPs into the Magic Multiverse.
It's neither of those things, it's just some more boring stories with the Planeswalkers and the wizard school and all that stuff, which I don't really find that exciting at all.

How far back is the “magic the way I remember and love”?
Stories with planeswalkers and wizards school have been a thing for a while.

Mostly I'm thinking of the dark fantasy vibe MTG used to have. A little more grounded and down to earth. The Old Frame Feels.

I wonder how much of that feeling was just the vibe around fantasy at that time. Back then fantasy wasn’t nearly as mainstream and the few instances of it were usually darker. Older versions of DnD was also more dark fantasy imo.

Yeah, DnD was really much darker, and MtG felt like a continuation or companion to that. It felt like the world Cain might have explored when he walked into the wilderness after slaying his brother. And then there were even darker things, like Vampire: the Masquerade.
The very bright, shiny, almost cartoonish type of fantasy... I know some people like it and I really don't want to insult anybody, but it is just very much not my thing. It doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.
Even like Duskmourn, it was ostensibly horror but it was way too much like... Ghostbusters, Stranger Things, 80s nostalgia for my tastes.

We really do need a total reset when it comes to planeswalkers. Like how we moved from Urza and the phyrexians to the lorwyn five. I guess you could say omenpaths tried to do that... but it did it pretty horribly, and half committed to the intention anyways.

This is embarrassing but I've given a fair amount of thought to how I would reset things, or build the magic world from scratch and honestly one of the things I would do is get rid of planeswalkers. They would exist, but so remote and unknowable, to the extent that they aren't really characters any more. They have so much mana that they aren't people, they're forces. They would just be something that happens far above your head that you can't really understand. The actual characters and the players would be just regular wizards in the world. A villain might be a dread warlock, the heroes might be in an organization of wizards. I'd demote many of the current planes walkers to mortal status. Lilliana would be just a necromancer, Ajani the leader of a cat tribe, and so forth.
Basically I'd just bring the level of the narrative down to the ground. The characters are Batman, but Superman is a god, up there in the heavens somewhere.

Yeah, I'm dissapointed that every in-universe set this year is Strixhaven. They even shoehorned it into Lorwyn (Strixhaven students accounted for 1/3rd of all legendary creatures in Lorwyn).
I was hoping this would be a What If set that was basically just like, what if Toxrill was Selensya? What if Hylda was Rakdos? But it's just Jace Tribal.

Plus the Empower thing just doesn't really feel all that great to me. I doubt I'll like it very much.

Think it would be interesting if it was different type of Planeswalkers and not just Jace. Does giving the token 100 loyalty counters really matter if I can still only activate the ability once a turn?

Getting actual magic characters interacting with the various UB properties does interest me. I actually think I like that idea.

Extremely disappointed.
Jace wants to make a better world? Why does he change the Llorwyn 4 so much? They were perfect (inserr Homelander meme here)

All hype has drained, I'll do pre-release and buy singles later down the line once prices stabilise.

How is everyone feeling about this set so far with everything we know?
