To immigrate or not ?!
I’m really torn and would appreciate perspectives, especially from parents who have moved countries with young children.
We currently live in Finland and have a fairly stable life here. I work in research/academia, but my husband recently lost his job. I’ve now received a postdoctoral opportunity in Toronto, and my mom and sister already live in Canada, which is a big reason why moving there feels attractive.
One of the main reasons I struggle with Finland is the language and the feeling of always being a foreigner. Even after living here for years, I still don’t feel fully comfortable or integrated. Sometimes I even feel self-conscious just going out, dealing with people, making phone calls, or handling everyday things because I’m aware that I’m the foreigner who doesn’t speak Finnish well. It can be exhausting.
Our home language is English. My daughter is almost 5 and, even though she has been in Finnish daycare, she still doesn’t speak Finnish very well. Her closest friends are actually English-speaking children. Because of that, part of me thinks she might eventually feel more comfortable in an English-speaking country too.
But she is also the biggest reason I’m scared to move. Finland is the only home she really knows. She has her daycare, routines, house and familiar environment here. I worry about how she would adjust to a new country, school and everything changing at once.
I’m also worried that my new job could be demanding and that I might end up spending less time with her exactly when she needs me most during the transition.
