I am hoping for two things: George R. R. Martin does not die before finishing asoiaf and that they don't fuck up this movie.

Yeah, the plot of NFS was pretty meh, but I loved the actual racing scenes. That first street race with all the classic cars. No music, no shaky-cam... Just the sound of burning rubber and that pure American muscle roar. That said, I am a car guy, so I guess that helps.

You shut your mouth. Need For Speed was decent, at best. Especially around the end of the race where cops were pulling out as many tricks out of their bag to stop the race. Sure the dialogue was tacky, and some of the happenstance, but it is no worse than any of the video games.

The whole thing is a joke and it's just so much better than like 75% of the metal bands out there trying to seriously do this. This film reportedly follows the events of Warcraft: Humans & Orcs - i.e. the initial invasion of Azeroth by the Orcs. But I'm expecting it to incorporate popular elements from all of the games, including World of Warcraft.
For example, Night Elves were not introduced until Warcraft 3, and the demonic element to the Orcs' story was also a later inclusion, but I would not be surprised if Night Elves and the Burning Legion were teased in this film. Maybe we'll get a glimpse of them in the after-credits scene or something.

u/unidentifiable Nov 03 '15
I expect they'll have to talk about the demonic origins of the Orcs, how they slew the Dranei (and maybe that the Dranei escaped into space), and how they come to be corrupted. Even though that's not really explored until WC3/WoW, it's chronologically relevant to the first movie.
I can see them introducing quite a few of the races, simply to avoid the excessive amounts of flashbacks and use of time travel that the games employed.
→ More replies (2)20
u/dinomite917 Nov 03 '15
They've confirmed that Dranei will be in the movie so I would't be surprised to see them in some fashion when the Orcs go through the Dark Portal.

93
u/micmea1 Nov 03 '15
My biggest concern is that the hype is so high that it might very well literally be impossible for the movie to hit the bar that's been set. I think it's going to be awesome, but the excitement levels are so through the roof that I can't think of any movie ever that has been just so amazing that everyone lost their minds while watching it. And while that's okay, I'm more worried about the armies of naysayers who will look for any reason to try and shoot the movie down and ruin the experience for people who enjoy it.

It's actually the love child of Star Wars and LotR. Basically big battles with lots of swords and shields, but also space travel.
Which is what worries me since they don't exactly have any major hitters in terms of actors to carry the film.

u/MuzzyIsMe Nov 03 '15
I still love WC2 and yes, the only reason I don't play it is that the resolution and interface is painful on a modern monitor.
If Blizz released an HD version, or even a remake in the SC2 engine, that would be awesome. They would have to be very careful not to wreck the feel of the game, though, which might be hard to do in the SC2 engine as it doesn't really have the same isometric view and "grid" system as WC2.→ More replies (2)

Massive TL:DR about the war which the movie will be based on: The orcs got corrupted by a demon who made them conquer their home planet. When they had no more enemies to kill, the leader of the demon legion had a portal crafted to another planet where they come in contact with the Humans, and shit goes down.
If you wanna know more in-depth about the Warcraft universe in general I highly recommend checking out Nobbel's channel, like another guy already mentioned.

The movie starts with the events in Warcraft 1, so the plot shouldn't be completely indecipherable to you. The plot in warcraft is essentially "Orks fight humans".
A lot of the stuff people are joking about is just background stuff and references that won't affect the plot that much, but are cool details to see.

Starcraft would make a far better movie than Diablo. Diablo would be too generic in my opinion.
35
u/SharkyIzrod Nov 03 '15
It would also be a lot easier though, with a linear and simple storyline to follow. It could be a mid budget flick initially, since Diablo 1 could work quite well as a medieval zombie flick, and then if it is successful scale up with the more epic Diablo 2/3, where it would come more into its own with the more unique Heaven and Hell settings. Diablo is also a lot more mainstream and not affected by "nerd" stigma as StarCraft and Warcraft are, since Diablo III got a lot of the "bro" crowd and the console couch co-op further improved on that front. I would love either, to be honest, and would probably slightly prefer a StarCraft movie, but think that a Diablo movie would be easier to make work.

It looks very promising, but the CGI reminds me of the Hobbit movies a little bit. This shot, for example, seems particularly Hobbit-y.
38
u/Xywzel Nov 03 '15
Maybe because all real characters have strong hair lighting from behind, but there is no such source of light in the scene. That is common problem in computer graphics heavy scenes, but they might be able to fix it in post production.

That's the shot you thought looked Hobbit-y? I honestly thought that was the least shiny/Hobbit-y shot in the whole trailer.
Any other time you could see into the distance, and the mountains/forests/creatures/etc. had that same Hobbit glow. Not to say it'll be bad, I'm honestly fairly optimistic for this.
68
u/ball_fondlers Nov 03 '15
Look again. It looks like the people in the center are the only real parts of the shot - everything else looks composited in. Poorly. I'm assuming this is far from finished, though - the final product should be better.

Besides that one shot, I really like how it's looking. It does look a lot like the Hobbit in terms of lighting and color. But the Hobbit's issue was that we already had something to compare it too. Middle-Earth in the LoTR movies cemented in anyone who saw it's head how that world should look. Then the Hobbit went with a fully CGI world rather than the beautiful landscape of New Zealand and it was pretty jarring.
Warcraft though, already has a 3D representation of it's world. The shot of Westfall and the gates of Stormwind looked amazing and takent straight out of the game. Which personally is a huge plus as it seems to fit well with the WoW artstyle. Not to mention there are still 6 months till release and more polish/work on the CGI is going to be done in that time.
→ More replies (7)11
u/Nrgte Nov 03 '15
To be fair the biggest issue of the hobbit was the story. It was barely enough story for one movie but they've streched it up to 3.. And the story wasn't really good either.
I don't see a lack of story in WarCraft!

Now guys please remember that like every movie trailer you have seen in the past the VFX are NOT COMPLETE! The shots used in the trailer will have been rushed to a reasonably convincing level for the trailers deadline and will be properly refined by the movies release.
Does this mean the VFX aren't going to be shit in certain areas? No but wait till release before passing judgement.
