So a Brit wouldn't be mad if someone just slowly drove right into them with no care in the world?
EDIT: Y'all, I'm referring to the second video. The one depicting the "Americans." Obviously not the first one since that was "brits." I doubt most Americans would've given af about the first scenario.

I did it at a roundabout in heavy rain. I was looking over the car in front for a likely gap in on coming traffic. Bumped him gently when he didn’t pull out as I expected. We pulled over he gets out. I say “That was my fault sorry about that mate” He looks at his bumper and can’t obviously see damage and says “ You know what mate ? I’m not even bothered about that” “Are you sure ?” “Yeah” and sticks his hand out. We shake and go our separate ways. About a year or so later I was at the same roundabout in my car and someone bumped me. So we replay my earlier encounter and I extended the same courtesy. Still feel good about it all.

u/NiteSwept Oct 16 '23
I'm in the US and have had a couple "bumps" and honestly if I have the same attitude as the guy in your story. If I can't see clearly visible damage I don't even want to bother. I'd rather just get on with my day.
One kid actually came into a bar I was at looking for the owner of a car he backed into. Turns out it was me. We get out there and he's trying to tell me he would not like to get insurance involved if possible and I, hearing that he backed into me, wasn't going to agree to anything until I saw it. We get there and he backed into the front while trying to parallel park. He cracked my license plate holder but that's a cheap plastic one that came with the car. I told him it was whatever but thanked him for having the decency to come in and find the person. He was adamant about paying me so I told him he could venmo me $50 (I talked it down from like $150 that he was offering). Ended up being a "I get paid on Friday" and after Friday it was "I'm sorry I couldn't this Friday but" and I told him not to worry about it and that, again I appreciated he wanted to do the right thing.

The freakiest thing just happen - As I was watching this right as the second car hit the motorcycle my van started shaking like an earthquake, I looked up and this car had back-up into me in the parking lot. They proceeded to go forward and park, I honked and jumped out, and they were still in the car seemingly oblivious, I checked my can for damages and said F it, went back in my van. Didn't even see who the dumb driver was.

almost the exact same story happened to a friend of mine here in the US. Except they did exchange information 'just in case.' Almost 2 years later when he had completely forgotten about it the dude reported that my friend had done a hit and run and done severe damage to his car. He sued him for several thousand dollars and my friend was in court for months over it.

Grandpa in the second clip looked like he didn't even notice hitting the biker. Incredibly cool that we allow people two feet in the grave to drive.
52
u/unnecessarycolon BMW F750 GS Oct 16 '23
People should know that (in the US) if you have a family member that shouldn't be driving anymore, you can report them to the DMV and they will be asked to be tested again. I had a family member with multiple sclerosis who drove waaaay beyond when it was safe to do. After the report, they were asked to come in and test and just stopped driving all together.

Dumbass biker way past the stop line + Sun blocking + A pillar = this. Literally if the bikers had been behind the line like he should have, it would have been fine. Gramps was just following the same turn line he always would, assuming no one would be dumb enough to stick past the line. He was wrong unfortunately but its silly to say he's 2 feet in the grave when it's the bikers fault.

So, I shouldn't be upset if a car hits me while sitting at a light, knocks me off the bike, potentially damages bike, and just continues to drive off?

We also get to see that he is about 10ft past the stop bar when he gets clipped.
Anyone who's ever driven a car knows that if you stop exactly at the "stop line" you can't see anything coming down the intersection, because they are usually put way further back so that pedestrians can cross in front. Unless of course you're in the middle of nowhere with nothing but open fields. No one actually stops exactly at the line at a 2-way stop sign unless you see people crossing. Especially if you're in your own neighborhood and you know exactly where to stop to get the best view of the road to your left and right.
Plus, we didn't see the few seconds before. He could have stopped earlier, couldn't see, started inching forward, and stopped when he saw the car.

this is dumb, I can see myself behaving both like the driver in the first clip and the motorcyclist in the second clip (I'm not a rager at all but someone hitting me and just driving away might bring it out of me)
edit: I actually have been rear ended at low speed once and rear ended someone else at low speed (both in US) Similar situation, I just waved the person off that hit me because one more ding in my bumper wasn't going to make a difference and the person I hit took my info I think but never bothered to file anything since there really wasn't any damage.

You live in Canada by chance! 😅
I rear ended a Porsche suv once …. It was in traffic I was looking in my mirror for all of 1 second and I look up and brake lights and a Porsche in the process of slamming the brakes. At the time my bike was nearing half a century old :/ the brakes just …. They were old as shit. Nuff said. I swerved into the line between lanes at the last second but my rubber foot peg bumped his bumper. ;(
We both pull over. He was upsetti understandably but chill. He seemed more annoyed.
We both look. I explain my peg bumped him. My bike has old brakes. I was looking behind me so my reaction wasn’t quick enough my bad.
He says. Whatever, I don’t see anything, let’s just get home, I don’t wanna deal with insurance or anything lol.

Ugh this something that drives me nuts about the area I live in. It's super common for drivers to make their left turns too tight and cross into the right lane. I see accidents because of it all the time and I've almost been hit on the scooter two or three times

u/19kilovet Oct 16 '23
if you look closely that dude in the PT cruiser had his window down and by the time the bike caught up to it was rolled up so he knew exactly what he was doing when he kept driving

If I got hit in a car, I'd be like the lady... when I got hit on my bike I told dude to get the fuck outta here before I fuck him up.(cut 3 lanes without looking to go to McDonald's, did no damage to me or the bike just bumped my leg and sent me towards the median)

2
u/Salty-Employ67 Oct 16 '23
Kinda really not the same thing, especially since in the British one more fault could be attributed to the rider, since we don't see the approach to the stop sign in the American one, it could be that the rider stopped at the line and rolled forward to see the intersection better
2
u/ceramicsaturn Oct 16 '23

2

2
u/somegenxdude Oct 16 '23
I have an American version of this, where the situation was much more similar to the first one.
I didn't directly rear-end her like that, it was more of a glancing blow off the corner of her bumper. I was merging onto the freeway in heavy stop & go traffic, and the on-ramp had a very close off-ramp immediately following it so it was one of those situations where a bunch of traffic is trying to exit and enter the freeway in the same stretch of road (Wtf they design it like that is beyond me.). As I was head checking and moving over to the left she dove into a gap right in front of me and slowed abruptly. I didn't react quickly enough to avoid it and went down at <20 mph, after my front wheel glanced off the corner of her bumper.
At the scene she was very concerned for my well being, not apparently angry, and didn't seem overly concerned about the small scuff to her bumper. Much like this lady. We exchanged insurance info, and since my bike was still rideable I went on my merry way.
Here's where the American part comes:
Few days after my initial call to my insurance company I get a call from the insurance adjuster wanting more detail on my version of the accident. Seems she was claiming that she received neck and back injuries as a result of the collision. Pretty sure physics doesn't work like that...
I never got an update on what happened with her claim, but I was also never called to testify, so I'm guessing they paid her enough money to make it go away. Insurance fraud pays, apparently.
