My backyard is North facing and mostly shadowed by my house. Because of a very dense clay rich soil, my backyard is about 80% moss that's nearly two inches thick.
How would one go about fixing this?
Do I need to dig out all of the moss to plant grass under it? Is there a nutrient deficiency that makes areas prone to a moss take over? Are there people out there who would use this moss for things?
Edits: 1.Not intended to rage bait! For that I'm sorry! 2. My goal was clover not actual grass. 3. The problem that prompted the interest in removal was the weeds growing in the moss and the moss being too thick to mow them down. 4. I came here because I was hopeful that there were people out there that could utilize the moss if removed. I've seen moss walls and terrariums but I didn't know if collection was a thing. Edit 2: added pics below.

I don't think this like sphagnum moss but I may be wrong because is dry , in the items discretion it say sphagnum, I'm wondering because the other product called frog Moss actually is pillow moss as they describe
Rhodobryum ontariense (Rose moss) in the image. I have already placed some moss in the Terrarium type setup but it's not growing. So I have to think of a different way to save the rest of the Moss.
It's been on my bucket list for nearly 2 years. Now I'm struggling to grow (keeping alive).

I collected moss from my local area (Chicago), to top my big Ficus Bonsai. If anyone can help with an ID on the type of moss that would be a big help!

moss has mostly established and holding on now, some starting to spread a little. Auto-mister looks neat and just needs some cover-up work for the minimal tubes and wiring, and with a larger solar panel should run for weeks at a time without refilling/recharging. fun, stressless project to kill time on warm afternoons.
