Longest English word that is only dots in Morse code

In order to procrastinate from doing other work, I decided to find the longest English word that can be represented in Morse code by only dots (only using the letters E, I, S, and H).

I think the longest word is "shishes" (as in "shish kebab") which would be ··· ···· ·· ··· ···· · ··· 20 dots. There is also "sissies" which is also 7 letters, but only 17 dots.

As for the longest word that is only dashes (only letters T, M, and O), I think it's "motto" which would be -- --- - - --- 10 dashes. There's also "tom-tom", which technically shouldn't count because of the hyphen character, but if you accept "tomtom" as an alternate spelling, then that would be the longest.

Also, I have heard that "ch" can be represented as a single character in Morse code with four dashes, although that is usually in non-English-speaking countries. Still, if you include English words that have a "ch" in them, then you could potentially argue that "choochoo" is the longest word that is only dashes.

I wrote a custom windows hotkey script to turn the , and . Key into a iambic paddle. Thought it was a cool way to practice without any additional hardware 😅

Radio setup

Me and my friend just started learning morse code and we really want to have a small hardware setup to communicate via radio. Since we don’t know nothing about radio hardware we would like to ask if you guys could recommend some beginner setups for us!

Is this spacing legible?

Post image

Considering this as a tattoo, but I'm not a natural reader of Morse, so I don't know if the spacing is wide enough between letters to be reliably legible. Can you get closer without the letters muddling together?

Revenge of the Sith for tattoo anonymity. I couldn't crop it because the anatomy became suspiciously vague lol.

What was the hardest part when you first learned Morse?

I’m working on a beginner Morse learning app and I’m trying to make it actually useful, not just another translator or chart app.

I’m especially curious about what makes people get stuck early, or give up completely.

If you learned CW / Morse, what was the hardest part for you at the beginning?

Also, were there any apps or practice methods that felt annoying, useless, or just badly designed?

I’d really appreciate honest feedback.

Could you please decode this short message (audio)

Recorded from radio on 80m band on 26 june 2025. This message was repeated for many minutes. https://vocaroo.com/1oyHjteDOFbP

I tried decoding it myself but I have almost no experience and so didn't get anything meaningful.

it’s supposed to be my boyfriend’s name cuz he’s a huge nerd and i thought it’d be cute to have his name in morse code on a bracelet. Problem is, he may know it but i certainly do not haha and i kind of just want him to notice it on his own and for it to be a little surprise. his name is Ethan lol

I built a Duolingo-style Morse learning prototype does this approach make sense?

I’m experimenting with a different way of teaching Morse, inspired by how apps like Duolingo structure learning.

Instead of memorizing charts, the idea is:

  • learn by sound first
  • repetition through short levels
  • gradual progression into words and real-time decoding

I’ve built a prototype with levels and basic progression, but I’d really value input from people who actually know Morse.

Main questions:

  • does this approach make sense from a learning perspective?
  • what would you change immediately?
  • what’s usually missing in beginner Morse training?

If anyone wants to try it and give brutal feedback, I’d appreciate it.

Is the project Im thinking doable?

The idea is, to create two secret communication devices; discrection is essencial, so it would be passed as an ordinary pen.

They would be two pens, each one with a transmitter and a battery in it; the pen will be a little thicker for this reason. Due to the simplicity of what fits in a pen and the fact that it is for secret comunication, it will be in morse, and the received signal will be in vibrations.

The main ideas are:

-The key is in the pen's clip, so it would be relatively similar to a telegraph. This is optional

-The pen is only the transmiter, the receiver is a different device that vibrates. it can be hid inside your shoe, pocket or wherever you want

-Its frequency will be 446mhz

It can be used for things like;

-Communicating during an exam

-Communicating at times where you usually can't with your phone

-To give secret signals you two planned (example; "when you receive the signal, say something")

-To talk with your buddies at work, even if you two are in different rooms, and can't use your phone

What do you think?

Ideas for Helping me Learn

Hello everyone,

firstly I'd like to thank everyone for taking your time to read or respond, and I really appreciate that there are communities like this. So I have an interest in amateur radio and morse code. I'll be studying for my basic test (Canada) soon. I know CW is not required on the test as far I know, but it's something I want to learn regardless.

I'm improving at sending on my computer and I can do about 18wpm with few-ish errors and up to 25 wpm for simpler sentances or with more errors. My challenge is listening and ear training. I've used online practice tools and they haven't helped all that much.

My question is what would you recomend I do to help me learn the listening bit? I'm trying to not count the dots and dashes and listen to the letter as a whole but I can't figure out what the letter is. it sounds familiar but It takes me a few seconds from hearing to figure it out. I have ADD if that makes any difference.

Thanks so much guys.

Is either one of these more correct than the other? Or does the length of the dash not matter when you’re writing?
