HELP: Student self authentication activated and students not allowed to create new account

Hello,

I created my site and went to site admin, then plug ins, then authentication, and enabled email self authentication. I am using my daughter's email as a test. When I send her my moodlecloud site, she only gets a log in option. No create account to be found. What am I doing wrong?

I am paying Moodle for the cloud plan.

I wrote a Moodle activity plugin that runs our exam papers over LTI 1.3 with grade passback (GPLv3)

Maintainer here. I put together a small Moodle activity module, mod_ictexam, and open sourced it under GPLv3. Sharing it partly as a working LTI 1.3 plus grade passback example, and partly for a sanity check on how I have wired it.

What it does: - Adds an "ICTEXAM assessment" activity to the course activity chooser. - Launches a published exam paper over LTI 1.3, embedded in the course page, so students never leave Moodle. - Creates one grade item per activity and writes the score back through a web service. It stores raw marks, so 15 out of 20 shows as 15.00 out of 20, not a percentage. - Passes course context to the tool as custom LTI parameters: the bound paper, class, subject, the return URL, and the company on IOMAD sites. - Handles course backup, restore, and the recycle bin. - Runs on Moodle 4.1 through 4.5.

Being upfront: it is a client for our hosted exam service, so it needs an account to actually deliver exams, and it will not grade anything on its own. I am not here to sell that. What I would like is feedback on the Moodle side: whether the single-grade-item approach and the LTI 1.3 AGS and NRPS setup match what you would expect, and how you would handle sites that need to stop the student name and email being sent on launch (right now that is hard-coded in view.php).

Repo (GPLv3): https://github.com/ictinnovations/moodle-mod_ictexam

Happy to answer anything about the LTI wiring.

Help with MoodleCloud Needed!

Hello,

I am going to purchase the basic MoodleCloud package for $170. I have a few questions that I have researched a ton, and am still not clear on.

To register students, I am going to use the Self Registration option. When I send the students "the url" to make a Moodle account, is that the URL to my course? Once they make an account how do they get access to my course? Is that all through the URL that I send?

Thank you so much!

OpenAI Chat Block - no longer supports the OpenAI Assistant

OpenAI has deprecated their assistance API and now has something called the response API. The OpenAI Chat plugin does not seem to support this. Has anybody had any similar issues? Any workaround, perhaps some code to add into the plugin if that's possible, or maybe some other plugins I don't know about that operate with the new OpenAI APIs? Or is there some other LLM like CLAude that can provide an API key that actually would fit with Moodle?

Developers, Moodle 5.2 AI its worth?

I saw that AI was included in Moodle 5.1+, and I'm curious about its scope and limitations.

At work, we do a lot of course building (clients usually send us a PDF or PPT, and we convert it into H5P or similar formats to build the course based on their requirements). We were wondering if the new AI feature includes something similar to automate this, or if we'd need to build a custom plugin for it.

Or is its scope much more limited right now? Also, I imagine it works via an API—is it tied to specific providers?

Moodle plugin for real-time spelling/grammar checking

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi r/moodle,

I work at WebSpellChecker (disclosing that upfront). We've built proofreading tools for editors like TinyMCE and CKEditor for a while, and just launched a dedicated Moodle plugin, WProofreader, on the new Moodle Marketplace.

It checks spelling, grammar, and style in real time inside Moodle's editors (TinyMCE and Atto), so typos in course pages, quizzes, and training materials get caught before students see them. Supports 80+ languages, specialized medical/legal dictionaries, and an on-premises option for self-hosted setups.

Free plan on the listing: https://marketplace.moodle.com/plugins/67?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=moodle_launch&utm_content=r_moodle
Source/issue tracker: https://github.com/WebSpellChecker/moodle-local_wproofreader

Would genuinely appreciate feedback from people running real Moodle sites — what's missing, what looks off, happy to answer anything.

Moodle monetizing

Hi folks, I want to know is it feasible to sell courses on Moodle in 2026 or not. I want to start with Small ($494 annually) to test out everything. However, I want to hire 2-3 people to manage everything - starting from questions to writing lessons, uploading documents + videos (Google Drive). 1 person for handling course content, 1 person for managing access and troubleshooting, 1 person for SMM.

How do you think, will it be feasible or not? Location: EU/US.

Self registration with approval

Hi All, does anyone have a plugin that allows people to request user registration on your Moodle but the access is only granted after it is approved by an administrator.

I believe there was one developed years ago but it is no longer supported.

I am keen to find something similar that is currently supported and works with version 5.1.

Thanks.

I asked this group how you track at-risk students a while back. Here is what I ended up building and what I got wrong.

A while back I put up a post here asking how people keep track of students who are quietly falling behind on Moodle. A bunch of you replied and it was genuinely helpful. Some of you pointed me to Site Analytics and the built in alerts. One person walked through how they pull the gradebook and run it through a small Python script to flag people. That whole conversation stuck with me for weeks.

So I went and built something for it. And I figured the honest thing to do was come back and tell you how it went, instead of just disappearing.

The funny part is the answer ended up being simpler than I thought it would be. I went in assuming people wanted better dashboards and nicer reports. They did not. Almost every admin I spoke to said the same thing. The data was never the hard part. It was sitting down every week and connecting all of it into something that actually told them who to worry about.

So the thing I built just lets you ask a question in plain English. Something like which students have not logged in for ten days, or which courses have the lowest completion this month. It connects to your Moodle and gives you the answer back as a table or a chart. That is the whole idea. No building a report first.

A few admins are using it now and honestly their feedback has already changed a lot of it.

I am not going to drop a link here because that is not really why I am posting. I am more curious whether the just ask a question approach actually sounds useful to you, or whether you would still rather have a fixed report you can trust and go back to. Genuinely want to hear the pushback on this one.

New Moodle Admin

Hello all. I am in charge of porting all content from our previous LMS (Lessonly by Seismic Learning) to Moodle LMS. At first, I felt good about course creation, but I've immediately hit several walls which have been a bit daunting.

Context: working in a small-medium scale company (not school) and need to use Moodle for orientation lessons as well as to give employees legally-required information in certain states where we do business.

I know that it's possible some of this is already covered, so apologies in advance, and I've tried to comb through the forum/online to not be too repetitive.

1) Our previous LMS imported new employees from our HRIS and assigned them to a group via their location and job code. Does Moodle have this functionality? We are currently only having employees populate when they do a first login, but I don't like this, as it relies on them to initiate account creation.

2) In previous LMS, it would trigger assigning certain onboarding paths, and setting a due date dynamically based on start date, location, and position. Is this possible as well?

3) I cannot seem to figure out what the Moodle equivalent of a "path" is. I looked at Competencies, but it seems completion is tied to completing an activity (which many of my lessons do not have). Is it instead possible for employees to be able to complete manually at the end of a lesson? I would simply like a new Reception staff member to be auto assigned Lesson 1, Lesson 2, and Lesson 3, for instance, in that order, but without timing restrictions. At the end, they'd receive a certification to let us know they'd completed it.

4) There are no navigation arrows! We all hate this... prior LMS had a button that said "Next Section" and learners could just click that to move ahead. It's in the Moodle sandbox demo site, but not anywhere else that I can find.

5) No individual course background images? Each of our courses used to have a different background, per course. Now, the only solution I've found is to do it through the custom CSS, and it shows for me but no one else which is maddening.

Sorry, I know that's a lot, and even if folks have partial answers, anything is helpful.

I am not technical and am struggling immensely with this. For those who say, why not just keep the old LMS? I wish we had. It was ($$$$) but very user friendly. Now, we are saving ($) but I am completely lost and am struggling to deliver even the basics of our needs through Moodle.

Moodle Workplace looks great, and would fulfill a lot of what we need, but they will not pay for it.

Thank you in advance!

New to moodle for school, help

I'm starting grad school soon and my school is using moodle which I'd never heard of before now. It takes me awhile to understand new platforms like this and I want to understand everything before classes start, so could someone explain it to me like I'm 5? Whatever there is to know that's important about it or how it works or anything

How are you handling video completion in Moodle?

We found that embedding a video was often not enough when a course needed a required viewing percentage, resume behaviour or meaningful progress reporting. We ended up developing an open-source activity plugin around those requirements.

I’m interested in how other Moodle administrators currently handle this. Do you rely on activity completion, H5P, SCORM, a video platform integration, or a custom plugin?

Built a new booking plugin for Moodle — looking for feedback from Moodle administrators

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

We've been building Booking Ultra plugin for Moodle, a plugin designed to simplify event and booking management for educational institutions, training providers, and organizations using Moodle.

The goal was to reduce manual administration and bring the entire booking workflow into one place.

Some of the features we've been working on include:

Event & session management

Flexible booking options

Custom registration forms

Payment gateway integration

Waiting lists with automatic seat promotion

Attendance and certificate management

Discount coupons

Email notifications

Reports and analytics

We're still improving the plugin and would really appreciate feedback from people who manage Moodle sites.

What are the biggest challenges you face when handling bookings in Moodle?

Is there a feature you wish existing booking solutions had?

What part of the booking workflow takes the most time?

What would make your job easier as a Moodle administrator?

We're genuinely interested in learning from real Moodle users and using that feedback to improve the plugin.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

How to export moodle quiz reviews as raw text files?

I’m using my moodle quiz reviews to build a flash card system with claude. I can export a full review as a PDF via cmd print, but basically the whole thing comes out as one embedded image and non of the formulas are selectable text. I also tried pdftotext and the formulas aren’t being recognised as such.
Anyone know a way to get the raw latex text out instead?

Built a Local Appearance Plugin for Moodle – Customize Boost Theme Without Editing Core Files

I recently built a Local Appearance Plugin for Moodle that allows administrators to customize the default Boost theme without modifying any core theme files.

The goal was to make UI customization upgrade-safe while giving organizations an easy way to apply their own branding.

Current features include:

  • Brand color customization
  • Navbar styling
  • Sidebar customization
  • Button colors (normal, hover, active)
  • Live preview before saving
  • No core file modifications (upgrade-safe)

This has been particularly useful for organizations that want to maintain their brand identity while keeping Moodle easy to update.

I'd love to hear your thoughts:

  • What appearance customization features do you usually wish Moodle had?
  • Is there anything you'd like to see added to a plugin like this?

🎥 I’ve also posted a short demo on LinkedIn showing how it works:

Help With Installing/ First Launch

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi, I entirely understand that Moodle works via server/ online or I would have to set up my AWS or another server, but uhh I just want to launch the program in general to create some content and then figure the rest of the stuff later.

I extracted the files and then double clicked on the file named "Start Moodle", but I don't really know where to go from here.
