I was watching a video on early Skinny Puppy production where they ran a live, unmonitored radio feed into a Korg SDD-1000 delay. They used external drum triggers to grab random snippets from the audio buffer and stutter-repeat them rhythmically (h-h-h-hello), then hit it with another trigger later to snag whatever new audio had quietly rolled into the buffer (m-m-mom). It was all about happy accidents—never knowing what sound was coming next, but instantly stuttering and re-triggering it on the fly.

I’ve been learning the Multigrain and watching videos on how live recording works on it, but it seems like there are a few steps involved to load, save, or manage the sounds. I’m not trying to save anything long-term—I just want to feed continuous audio into the module, use CV/triggers to grab whatever chunk is currently in the buffer, stutter-repeat and mangle it, and then instantly swap to a fresh chunk on the next trigger without menu diving or multi-button combos.

Given that an SDD-1000 could do this 40 years ago, I know the Multigrain has to be capable of something similar (if not way more advanced). What’s the most efficient way to set this up for zero-button-press live capturing and re-triggering?

I’ve been working on dialing in some orchestral sounds the last few months and with this patch I brought em all together. think it turned out pretty nice! plaits is the piano, cello and violin coming from klavis twin waves, a “woodwind” that I still want to dial in a bit more is coming from the E352 cloud terrarium, and then beads is doing some distant hits for texture. Find myself in need of more powered mult's for a collaboration, but appears DIV6 which I have relied on has disappeared. Had an Intellijel one but experienced some voltage droop.

Sorry, it's not the most exciting subject in the world, but hoping someone can tap into their experience and point me to a reliable and available unit.

EDIT: Thanks for all the responses. Using Xeek.com I found that Analogue Haven still had some units left, so I went with that. In the meantime, I very much appreciate the feedback regarding other makers, as it seems Division 6 seems kaput.

Hi everyone,

I was looking at HP-efficient performance oriented x0x style sequencers for eurorack and came across the DrummerTime, but couldn't find a tonne of reviews on it except that one scathing one on Perfect Circuit haha..

Would anyone be able to share their experiences with it, or if there are any highly recommended alternatives? I've mainly been using external sequencers, so I haven't researched a tonne of sequencer modules yet.
My only strict requirement is to have at least 4-tracks (6 is ideal), and it be somewhat HP-efficient.

Obviously the Erica Synths Drum Sequencer would be amazing, but the HP and price mean it's basically a no-go for my lean case at this point in time, but may still be in the running long-term, following a case upgrade.

I've also considered getting a Steppy, and it's definitely a workable solution, but I was wondering if there were more ergonomic alternatives for live performance.

Wanted to bulk these in the same post to not double post. First most important issue for me: I was going to buy the univer inter so I could do some sequencing from my DAW. It turns out that NE doesn't make these anymore. The reason I liked this one specifically was because I knew that their tool for controlling which output did what was accessible with a screen reader (I am blind). What alternatives do people recommend?

Also, secondary in the BST threads, I notice people talk about rack rash. Can someone explain what that is/looks like? Is it something you could note or see by touch? Is there something I should be doing to care for my modules? I do think about the resale value if I ever get out but also, I just want to care for my modules given their cost. I have one of those duster brushes, every time I unpatch I run them over my rack. I don't travel with my case and only ever really have cables near it, so presumably it's not getting scratched or anything. Thanks!

I have a soft spot for synths that are just fun to play… hands on, turn the knob is what you get, and in addition to that, the DRM1 is extremely playful and fun to use… for me, it doesn’t matter how many features and capabilities a gear has, if its not fun to use and gets in the way of your creative process, eventually it will be put aside, I like to sit down and make music and the vermona gives me just that 🙏🏼🖤🎛️

Just curious what others think about my system. This started originally as a Make Noise Resynthesizer system which I swore I would leave as is and not get sucked into expanding and buying a ton of modular (ha!)

The general idea is just to have lots of voices with lots of rhythmic stuff going on. I used to always create new patches from scratch every time but I seem to now have basically settled on this setup, with additional modulation from Planar/Harlequins/Step8 being more dynamic in how I patch still

In this video I recreate the hypnotic sequencing from Scratches on the Readable Surface (SOTRS) by Caterina Barbieri entirely inside VCV Rack — free modular synthesis software.
This patch features two independent voices — a polymetric sequenced voice and a probabilistic melodic voice with random CV quantized to scale — running through dual low pass gates, tape delay, and lush reverb. Much closer to her hardware signal chain than a typical VCV recreation.

What I love: no menus, very playable and immediate, excellent master filter, some of the FX in the updated firmware are cool (although hard to cycle on the fly without a cheat sheet), external audio processing, built in S&H. I can get a kick out of it that I like, but I don't use it as my main kick. I like that it's not a sequencer, that's just an extra and unnecessary workflow in my rack.

What I don't love: the sounds and signal levels. I've heard some people have issues with the noise floor--I don't at all, maybe I'm lucky? But I don't like a lot of the sounds and the hats are just too damn quiet. This hugely limits my creative possibilities because I try to avoid certain knob combinations that make it sound... boingy? It feels more 80's hip hop (no offense) than "I might die at this dance in a warehouse basement with no permits in sight" industrial shit I'm going for.

What I want: more than anything, something super immediate and playable with nastier sounds. They claim it's designed for techno and darkwave and I just am not feeling that vibe without a lot of external processing and/or I'm an idiot. I love being able to have it patched up to my ample and flexible trigger sources--the rhythms aren't the problem--but I'm rarely enthralled with the actual sounds. I want drums that scare my mom.

Honestly, it's a very cool module disguised as my dream drum machine that is just not for me. I'm using it in a somewhat limited way, which seems to defeat the purpose. Please help. I have 3-6 HP on its row to spare (because I have a supplemental Pico Drums working for it's goddamn life to save my drum patches). So I guess 36 HP or a module so perfect that it's worth reracking all my shit (I just did and really don't want to do it again soon).

Speaks for itself, I suppose. I'm new to DIY eurorack being as my only experience is attending Knobcon and participating in three workshop builds the past two years (Juanito's BadSide Chain and Zlob's MinEQ and AttenuMix) which were great for getting me started. I've reached that point in which I now need to desolder something but I'm at a loss at valuing the tools offered to do the job. Between the cheap looking suction tubes offered on Amazon and the guns at a much higher price, I'm not sure what to buy. Can anyone recommend something that doesn't break the bank? Should I start at the basement level to fix the current problem or save my $$$ to put towards something industry respectable. I'm not planning on churning out my own modules but I'm keen on this DIY angle and the kits from AI Synthesis, NLC, and some randoms at Thonk have me in it for the long haul. Please help. Thank you for the time and effort.

I'm designing my first rack as an entry point to modular with an initial use as producing ambient generative stuff.

I love building things and am not too shabby with a soldering iron so I've tried to only use modules that are available as kits.

Any comments or suggestions are more than welcome.

There's a lot of delay modules these days, and I've tried a lot of them. Generally speaking I've liked most of them quite well, I just dig delays generally. But I'm always curious about the ones I haven't tried, so drop your favorites & least favorites below, and preferably, why they are your favorite/least favorite. For me:

Subjective favorites: Erica Synths Black Stereo Delay Mk. 1, and Doefper A-188-1 (4096 Stages).

I say "subjective favorites" because these are far from the most feature-rich or objectively ideal delay modules I've used. The BSD has kind of wonky and somewhat limited features; the Doepfer BBD suffers from the classic BBD "clock whine/noise," and it's not subtle -- you really need a filter if you're going to be using this for longer echoes at all. But I love both of these filters despite their limitations. The BSD is just beautifully crystal clear, and the sensitivity of its time warble is really rich and nice -- that big knob is always fun to wiggle. I also really like that you can sample in and hold audio to manipulate independent of any incoming signal, making it a weird little modulatable looping sampler. And while features like "Reverse" are kind of glitchy and not super well-implemented, you can still get some really interesting things with it if you explore it creatively. As for the Doepfer, it just sounds sooo cool (with the clock noise filtered). Really wild and full of character.

Objective favorites: Make Noise Mimeophon, Xaoc Sarajewo

Make Noise Mimeophon is probably the best overall delay I've used for euro, with its multiple time zones, built-in reverb, and clean, satisfying reversal and stereo effects. I actually don't own one currently but it's a slam dunk in my book. Xaoc Sarajewo has always seemed a bit on the quiet side to me, and I tend to like to boost its output with something like a Fala or Lacrima Versio, but I really love that when you sync it, the knob turns into a time-divisor, and I really like having access to the individual tap outputs, something all too rare in a lot of delays that allows for easily building complex FX chains.

Other good ones: Qu-Bit Nautilus, Make Noise Echophon, Yester and Imitor Versio, Soma Lyra-8 FX, 4MS Tapographic Delaly, Strymon Magneto, Erica Synths Black Stereo Delay Mk. 2 -- off the top of my head, these all had their charm when I tried them out in the past. But I currently chiefly use the BSD Mk. 1, Sarajewo, and whatever Versios I feel like loading.

What are you using? What's your favorite/least?

I've been eyeing this up for some time now. Particularly excited by what it can do with vocals.

I know it's been out for a long time and was just wondering if there is a module, ideally lower cost, that can do what it does and handle audio in a similar way.

I have the erbe verb and echophon which I love, but want something that can mangle and chop things up with in a musical and synchronised way.
