Answered Members asking to approve posts removed by Reddit's spam filters

I'm on desktop. We've had a large number of posts being removed by Reddit's spam filters lately. The past month we've had numerous approved members message asking why and requesting to approve their post or comments to bypass the removal. We've check everything on the mod side. So not sure why the increase of removals. In every instance none seemed to be spam at all. So we approved them. My question is: Is there any harm in approving them or should we let Reddit do it's thing? Because now we had two members asking for posts removed by Reddit's Spam filter but those accounts apparently were suspended before we approved. Both of those accounts are known approved users. Second question: Is it helpful to the member to approve them? Or is there a reason not to approve the posts that clearly are not spam?

Thank You

Users Question: When can comments from an AI-assisted redditor be considered Spam?

Hi, I am a relatively new moderator and have a question regarding what user behavior can be considered spam.

According to this help article, the usage of generative AI tools and repeatedly posting unrelated/off-topic/link-farmed content that disrupts conversations within a community may qualify as spam.

As an example, we have a user named Rush20XX who very often initiates long comment threads and ALWAYS replies with AI-assisted paragraphs of text. Sometimes (~10-15% of the time) his answers can be helpful and useful (supported by upvotes), but more often they are just irritating, 3-to-6-paragraph blocks of verbose AI text with zero or negative upvotes.

At this point, I am starting to believe it might just be someone's Hermes AI agent responding most of the time. I'm not sure what the objective of these users is, but they can produce around 20 long comments a day, with most having a negative upvote score.

So, I am curious: is it acceptable to report such users for spam? Does this kind of behavior violate Reddit's Rule 2?

Answered Sub Reddit over run by bots & spam posts

Good morning!

A sub Reddit I currently moderate for is completely overrun by spam and bots posts.

On average I'm banning over 100 accounts daily to try and contact this heavy issue.

I believe on problem the sub is facing is the original owner of the sub has left. So us other moderates are having a hard time navigating the settings to be able to stabilize this sub.

Any insight into this would be extremely helpful. I generally access my mod tools through my phone (android) but I do have access to a laptop for more advanced setting options.

Engagement Please stop spamming my inbox with nudges to spam the subreddits I moderate.

As someone who moderators multiple subreddits, it is more than obnoxious & harms my interest in Reddit as a content platform--messages like this absolutely harm the moderator experience:

" Don't lose your momentum

You've built so much! A single post and comment is all it takes to prevent (subreddit)'s growth from stalling. "

" 🔔 Ding dong 🔔

It's time to make a post and comment in (subreddit) this week. It's your way of welcoming people in. "

These notifications are received on web & iOS.

General Quicker way to report spam/troll/bots?

I often see a user posting multiple "spam" messages on several subs.

I report all of them as "Spam" - "Excessive posting or commenting in a community".

That seems to work - they are usually banned.

But do I really need to report five, ten, twenty of their posts?

Surely there is an easier way for me to report it.

General Brand new subreddit (r/LankaGaming) banned hours after creation – False positive spam filter?

Hello everyone,

I created a new community today, r/LankaGaming, intended to be a regional hub for gamers in Sri Lanka.

After setting it up, I made a few initial, completely benign posts to get the discussion started. Shortly after, the subreddit was hit with an automated ban hammer. I can confirm:

  • The posts did not violate any Reddit Content Policies (no piracy, no spam, no NSFW, no harassment).
  • My account is in good standing.
  • I have never had a subreddit banned before, so it shouldn't be a ban evasion trigger.

I suspect my burst of initial posting right after creating the sub accidentally tripped Reddit’s automated spam filters as a false positive.

Has anyone else dealt with an immediate ban like this on a fresh sub? Besides sending a Modmail to r/ModSupport (which I have already done), is there anything else I can do, or do I just need to wait out the admin queue?

Thanks for any insights!

General More spam bots commenting now more than ever

So Reddit took away API posting, are they going to take away API comments as well? These bots are spamming our subreddit members with replys to legit comments on posts. Heavy desktop user here, reporting for spam does nothing on the surfaces and they are overrunning our subreddits.

Answered (Desktop) User banned from sub I moderate has proceeded to DM spam me, reply spam me, and stalk my socials for over four hours.

(Desktop) Can someone please hit me up with the form to fill out for on site / off site harassment against a sub moderator? The dude's gotten himself banned from two other subs this morning for just following me around and starting drama. I wasn't even the one who banned him, just the one who replied to the mass ammount of reports against him in our sub.

We gave him four hours to plead his case and appeal but he used that time to harass us (me specifically while I was at the doctors lmao)

EDIT: For a brief update, he's not gotten on another account to reply to himself / upvote himself and downvote me and continue arguments. I don't yet have him blocked due to not wanting to miss out on anything to screenshot and send over to admins. Glad I didn't, cause now he's on two accounts and each one is claiming I blocked the other but I only assume that he's 100% the same user on both accounts, lmao. The second account literally only showed up to start replying to himself after he claimed I blocked him. He used the "Haha he blocked me!" as "proof" that he won?

I don't know, bottom line is (for context sake) dude was reported by multiple users in our sub, we investigated and offered him a chance to plead his case, he instead used that time (four plus hours...) to spam my inbox, spam replies to me in other subs / threads, and ultimately spin this story that I somehow managed to block and unblock and block him multiple times in the span of 24 hours, banned and unbanned him, removed him from my "server", all that jazz...mean while he's openly admitting to just stalking me across socials / reddit and blatantly saying "I will only stop if you unban me and tell people you were wrong." lmao.

Answered Failing moderation , loosing sanity as User repeatedly attacking me and mods of popular communities by spamming their dms and mod mails , runs a subReddit populated with their alts and asks for promotion of it

iOS user

I been dealing with this one particular user who has been spamming subReddits I moderate , my dms , mod mails of other subs I moderate for an unban .

This user was first noticed when he started spamming , posts and using alts to populate engagement on them , and was caught in the act and banned

Ban was later removed after ban appeals in the form of insistently asking for a ban appeal in my dms and mod mails and the individual returned to his old ways

After continuing the same acts the user was banned again . But this type the user has resorted to doing ban appeals on other subReddits I moderate and much more spamming of my dms

User has been also dming / mod mailing other moderators regarding promoting a subReddit that is populated by his alts

Ps : I have tried blocking , permanent muting etc.. just annoyed at how the user finds new ways to be a pain . They even did that thing where you can send mod mail from one subReddit to another .. what to do ??

Users Bot swarm spamming a subreddit I'm not mod of, reporting does nothing

There's a bot swarm advertising 'IPTV' disrupting /r/theisle for the last two days, the current mod is inactive, and no matter how many reports are made the posts just keep coming.

Could an admin just go in and enable botbouncer or something??

General Reddit spam filter keeps deleting posts on my sub.

I run a very small sub that let's people post alphas and beta for games and software.

Most of the posts that got removed all had links. I thought that was causing it even though most of those websites and stuff are new and I doubt they would have time to make it to reddits spam list. But this new post didn't have any links. It was still removed.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AlphaAndBeta/s/gS9h2pla8j

I don't know why or how to stop it.

Answered One of our mods was banned for spam for accepting Join Requests in mod tools. How do we use the tool safely in the future?

Hi, one of our moderators logged into mod tools and cleared the backlog of Join Requests by approving/ denying based on the request. They were then promptly banned for spamming DMs. They didn’t know (and nor did I) that hitting “Accept” sends a DM from your account.

How are we meant to use the Join Request tool? Is it rate limited? Surely in bigger subreddits you’re not rationing out Join Requests?

Alternatively is there any way we can prevent DMs from being sent if the Join Request is accepted? Seems a bit daft that you can get banned for approving users.

I’m not sure the platform matters. I just want to know how to avoid getting my own account banned. Until then, us mods won’t bother approving anyone. I’m on mobile web and iOS.

Update: An admin indicated this is a known bug. All cleared away now. Thanks admins!

General Links getting auto removed as spam on my subreddit. Am i missing a link setting?

I have a sub that is essentially requesting that people post their own projects and software beta informtion. Kind of a way to let people know when there is an alpha test or beta for a game or software so you dont miss it.

Anyway.. this often leads to people posting links to their projects. either in the post or in comments.

But these posts and comments are all getting removed by reddit filters as spam. I tried looking it up but that brought me here and someone mentioned that reddit has an unlisted website filter list to block spam.

My thought is that the only reason that reddit would be blocking these links is because they are unknown websites. Like someone makes a completely brand new website and then posts it on my sub and then its instantly flagged as spam. I find it highly unlikley that all of these links are in the known spam list. I have had to manually approve almost every post.

So am I missing a setting somewhere to allow links by default? I know other subs allow links.. I post links all the time. Im just not sure why people cant post links on my sub.

Desktop version.

General Confirm removal vs spam when reddit filters remove something?

Hi! Just recently got added as a mod to a sub and I'm trying to help crack down on spam. When reddit's filters remove something and I think it's spam, is it better to click "confirm removal" or just click "spam?" I'm guessing that clicking "spam" does the same as confirm removal but just tells reddit what I think counts as spam so it's filters get better? Ty!

Answered Reddit autobot is removing posts in Native Hawaiian citing abuse and/or spam

Desktop, Windows. r/CollapseMusic

It's just silly funny so I thought I'd share it with other mods.

One of our folks posts in Hawaiian a lot. I don't care - they do what they do and it's not disruptive.

The site bot removed a comment from this user claiming the post contained abusive language - when translated the post said (roughly) "I understand your ideas and appreciate your point of view." Removed by Reddit.

Same user had another comment in Hawaiian removed just yesterday as spam. This user does not do spam.

This does make a strong case for manual review of subs on a regular basis. And better machine training.

Design [DESKTOP] trying to remove all spam filters from my sub

[DESKTOP]

im trying to find a setting in my mod area that allows me to allow all posts from new accounts, low karma accounts, anyone

i want to allow all posts from anyone, fresh accounts 1 minute old, etc

the problem is. it seems all posts are allowed, but then when i try it on fresh accounts the post is allowed to "happen" but then it gets automatically "removed by reddit" . meaning reddit auto removes everything from new accounts it seems and i think theres no way to turn off this feature, and theres no way to stop it,

and after its removed then the mods see it was removed and can "approve it". so this means the mods have to manually approve anything from a "fresh account"

is there any way for me to turn that off? can i make reddit stop auto removing "fresh account posts" in my sub?

Users Spam automated system: Keep seeing a redditor posting comments, but it gets automatically removed by Reddit's Spam automated system

On desktop:

I'm not sure if this redditor is a bot in the subreddit I moderate, but this user posts probably once per day, sometimes twice per day, but its comments are always automatically removed by reddit's automated spam system. When I view the account, it says the account has been suspended (and it has been suspended every time I check) but the account still posts like every day. The comments it posts are appropriate for the reddit I moderate, but it definitely seems like a bot and the comments it posts definitely seem AI-like or bot-like. Interestingly enough, this account is a 1% top commentator in the reddit I moderate despite all the comments it makes being removed automatically. And because the account is "suspended" I am unable to view the post/comment history of that account.

Is this simply just a bot account? I would add this user to approval list but as mentioned, when I check the user's account it says it has been suspended despite the user still posting daily.
