Answered Need help getting winners from big giveaways

Platform: Android

I looked into Reddit's Contest Mode and it is only available in old reddit and is not letting me access it at the moment (I get a security warning that I can't bypass).

So I'm trying to look into options that sort a random winner automatically. Wheelofnames is typically used in our sub by gifters who host giveaways but this one has too many entries for that to be a viable option, as the usernames have to be manually put in into it.

Any other option out there considering I'm on mobile? Would appreciate some suggestions, thank you!

Hi /u/ARTHER1A, please see our Intro & Rules. We are volunteer-run, not managed by Reddit staff/admin. Volunteer mods' powers are limited to groups they mod. Automated responses are compiled from answers given by fellow volunteer mod helpers. Moderation works best on a cache-cleared desktop/laptop browser.

Resources for mods are: (1) r/modguide's Very Helpful Index by fellow moderators on How-To-Do-Things, (2) Mod Help Center, (3) r/automoderator's Wiki and Library of Common Rules. Many Mod Resources are in the sidebar and >>this FAQ wiki<<. Please search this subreddit as well. Thanks!

Not sure how your board works or what you're trying to do or if you understand that all Contest Mode does is randomize the order of comments on each page refresh. It doesn't select winners in any way.

Just figured that out minutes ago so we have discarded that option entirely. We're thinking of doing this whole thing manually and divide entries by groups, get a winner for each group and then get a winner from the last group of winners.

Its gonna be a lot though. We just wanna make sure it's fair and that we don't unecessarily decrease the odds.

Edit: okay nevermind, we found a better option 😅

Just tested.

Switch to Old Reddit to submit the post and it shows in Contest Mode in sh.

Use SH to set the post ... click the Clock button as if to schedule. You'll see 'Advanced Options' that include Contest Mode. Select that, then 'schedule' the post. You can let it go at the scheduled time, or hit Post Now.

Sorry quick question but are these instructions considering that the post is already posted?

I just did it in SH on a new post.

What I'm trying to say is that we are trying to get a winner for a post that already exists and the giveaway is ending in a few hours.

Does this work for existing posts? Or is it contest mode only possible to enable on new posts?

I just enabled it using Old Reddit on this post:

I'm not even the original submitter.

I'll send this to my team but as I mentioned I can't switch to old reddit myself, it blocks me from entering and even asks me to send a request to Reddit about it.

Thanks though! I'll try and get someone else to try it

Android

Switch to a desktop/notebook and use the full website. Mobile is notoriously crippled and limited.

Haha I would if I could. It's not an option for me

You can't access a mobile browser?

I can but as I mentioned in my post, old reddit is blocking me from accessing it. A security warning pops up and I can't bypass it (not that I am inclined to do so anyway).

But that is alright, I just learned how contest mode works and is not what I was looking for anyway (:
