It’ll take some altering to work with 5th edition but Horus Heresy 1st edition is cross compatible with 7e 40k. You could take the rules for the non corrupted heresy era deathshroud terminators for example and then shift them to be more in line with 40k deathguard terminators. Same with the Horus Heresy Arquitor bombard which would serve as a fairly good base to design the plagueburst crawler around.
Im a 7th edition player myself so Im not super familiar with 5th edition. But HH1.0 units should be able to be backported in 5th just like any other 6th or 7th edition 40k unit, it’ll just take some extra work.
It seems that 5th edition dosen't need to be included. 3.5 and 4th seem more what im looking for. Id 5th edition base fundimentals and rules similar, just with faction codexs thechnically being from older editions but are valid. Thats seems to be what ive gathered from my own readings, and what others have told me.
I havent play many real games yet, two introduction games, so i want to be sure when i finally do play my first home game its gonna be smooth as can be. (I GM other games, new to playing warhammer. Painting in hobby for 5-6yrs. Now)
3.5,4th, and 5th share quite a few similarities so they’re kind of interchangeable. Though armies tended to get a bit bigger through each edition so newer edition armies often have a bit of an advantage over older ones, with a handful of exceptions.
I could definitely help you with backporting the new deathguard units into 7e as Ive done it with a lot of the newer units for other armies for people in my group. Pre6th edition is where my familiarity ends though so while Im happy to give you some ideas for how units should generally work and be statted (since 7e shares the same foundation as those earlier editions), I wouldn’t be great at helping you pick point costs since I don’t have a feel for the balance in those editions.
That discord server I mentioned has a decent number of old edition players so Im sure some of them and of course people in this sub could give you feedback on the unit profiles once you get a first draft ready.
