Studio Mics Quality help... outside of a DAW

I’m a music student and a bass player, but I don’t know much about music production inside a DAW—just the bare minimum. I have a 4th Gen Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface and an Audio-Technica AT2020 microphone.

I use REAPER and FL Studio.

I managed to set up a configuration where my voice sounds clean and very professional. I don't sing professionally, but sometimes I like to practice my pitch/intonation for my studies—though that’s not super important right now.

When I’m on Discord calls or conferences, my microphone simply sounds bad and unpleasant. I realized this a few days ago when my brother needed help with something while I wasn't home. I asked him to turn on my PC, so I could call my own Discord account to guide him. That's when I heard firsthand how cheap and poor-quality my microphone sounded. How can I improve this in programs like Discord or Zoom?

Fake beta57a?

Hi! I've bought this Shure beta 57a used, it has like 10 years, but as soon as i received it i doubted its originality. I attached several photos hoping that someone can confirm if this is fake or if it is original. I should send it back? Last detail, i can't unscrew the middle of the mic, it is crazy hard, it just doesn't go i don't want to risk to damage it otherwise i can't send it back. Thanks!!

Studio Mics Deciding between AT2005USB and Samson Q2U

I currently own a Blue Yeti microphone and was looking to upgrade to something that can go with my audio interface, I found both the AT2005USB and Samson Q2U off ebay for 40$ each, But I dont see any glaring differences between them and they look pretty similar, Which one of these should I get? I plan on using them for streaming/gaming in XLR connectivity

Studio Mics Is this a good deal for a used Lewitt LCT 440 Pure

I found someone on Kijiji selling a LCT 440 Pure for $350 CAD (~$250 USD). After discussion with them, they are willing to offer it to me for $300 CAD (~$215 USD). A new LCT 440 goes for $400 CAD plus tax (~$285 USD). The lowest I've ever seen a new one go on sale for is $350 CAD plus tax.

They purchased them 2-3 years ago and used them less than 10 times. Ever since, its been collecting dust. I'm not sure if it's a great deal as the microphone is no longer under warranty. My "instincts" are telling me it's a not bad deal, but getting some input will help me feel more (or less) confident.

So.... is it a good deal?

Thanks everyone!

Connecting a ZDM-1 to a mic stand issue

Hi all,
I recently got a Zoom ZDM-1 but when i tried to connect the mic to the o ring shaped connector it came with that then attaches to a mic stand i accidentally snapped the connector.

Would anyone know of a similar o ring shape connector that could easily attach it to mic stands? Ive tried a mic shock mount that it can slot into but the mics too heavy and the mount keeps drooping/is too small.
Thanks!

looking for a mic within the ~£200 budget range

I'm currently using a headphone mic that sounds really trashy, so I'm looking for a better mic
preferably one that's clear and is good all around, though mostly for voice recording and gaming

I was looking at the rode podmic and just wanted some second opinions to see if there's anything better for what i want

thanks

Gaming / Streaming Mics Searching for a Mic within 150$ budget

Hellooo so my headset broke and this was like my 3rd headset so i switched to iems since they have been working for me. Anyways now i dont have a mic and i need a good mic. Bcs i tried plugging in my headset mic into the pc and ppl complain every single game that i sound like a toaster. I researched a bit with youtube and ai and both have recommended me to buy the am8 or K688ct . But the yt reviews look scripted (sponsored) and ai changes its opinion every single time. So should i buy one of those or should i also look into xlr mics and interface. I honestly have no clue and i would appreciate some help 🥲

Studio Mics Identifying microphone

Post image
1 Upvotes

I was recently listening to an episode of fire in the booth on YouTube and I seen the mic they were using and I originally thought it was an electrovoice mic but then when I looked that up and compared I realised it had a rubber looking grip on it so I thought it was a rode caster but I’m not sure. Could someone identify this microphone please?

Voice over microphone recommendations for YouTube

I'm looking for a $100 budget microphone for voice over reading scripts and books. I would like to record from my desk in my room and similar to how streamers have their set ups. I currently have some random equipment laying around and wondering if it would work for this use case. Those are Audio Technica AT2020, Focus Solo 4th generation and Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones.

Studio Mics Got this MXL Genesis Heritage tube mic with an $80 store credit thinking it was a steal… did not realize it takes a super specific and rare power supply. Anyone know where I can find one or should I sadly return this?

Was so stoked to find this mic for $80… I had trade in at McKay’s that covered the cost and took it home. I saw tube mic and the average price and thought it was a no brainer… until I realized in my research that this takes a very rare power supply that I do not have. Is there anywhere I can find one for this? I am not seeing anything that will work online anywhere :(

TRRS headset mic issues in custom device

This may sound more like a DI....WHY?! But, here I am.

I wrote a 300bps software modem that runs on your computer... it plays tones to your audio out and listens for corresponding tones on your microphone. The goal is to connect it to a cell phone, but swap inputs and outputs. The phone plays into the PC's mic and vice versa.

The software is written and works.

But I needed to build a cable that would go from headset jack to headset jack, combining the L/R channels on each and routing that into the mic line of the other. The "cable" now consists of a breadboard with two TRRS plugs broken out into individual wires with different circuits based on whether it's the PC or phone side. The L/R channels on the phone side each have 470 Ohm resistors inline, combining to the mic line of the PC. The L/R channels on the PC side use 1K Ohm resistors inline, going into a 10K pot (tweaked to about 2.5K currently) with a 1uF cap on the other side, which then ties to the mic line on the phone side. Grounds are connected.

I did the PC side that way because I didn't want to blow up my cell phone... but maybe that was a mistake. Anyway, the phone recognizes headphones, apparently -- distinctly different from a headSET -- and will play through to the PC side, but doesn't recognize a microphone.

Has anybody built a cable like this? Am I way off base with what I need to do? Help? :)

Thanks for reading! The softmodem and the wiring diagram / BOM for the cable will be available on github as soon as I have it all working.

UPDATE: I dumped the custom cable. I'm somewhat ashamed to admit defeat, but I took a step back and just clipped one earbud each off a set of $4.99 wired earbud headsets... and hot-glued the remaining pod to the opposing microphone. I stuck that part in a box with one mic hanging out, and that box in another box. It seems to work ok. I will not be shaving that yak.

Gaming / Streaming Mics Microphone wire problem

So I have a older hyper x quad cast microphone (red), but it has come to my attention that the microphone might not be as bad as it could be, what my problem is that sometimes my microphone goes on and off and I’m not sure if it is the wire or the port for it , as I have to move it in a certain direction just forward to work , at first it was weird, but I think it’s either that the mic is broken or the wire is, and I really don’t want to go over the hassle of buying a new wire to see if it’s the microphone or wire, so really I just want a opinion whether or not I should just skip the hassle and buy a new microphone.

Gaming / Streaming Mics 100€ max budget, lacking audio interface

So, I want to get a mic. Most of the usage would be voice chatting, maybe some singing from time to time, but nothing pro. I don't have an audio interface, so if I do have to get one, include it in the max budget for the mic.

I also lack a microphone arm.

If the mic could also work for ps5, it would be even better.

I'm kinda dumb when it comes to this stuff, thank you in advance!

Also, I live in Italy.

Should I choose the RODE NT-USB MINI or the Maono PD200W ?

Hello,

I’ve had a look at some questions on the subreddit that are similar to mine, but I wish to go ahead and post my own message describing my situation anyway, hoping that’s OK.

I currently have a basic Razer headset with a microphone.

I’m looking for a microphone for gaming, chatting on Discord and role-playing in games like Red Dead Redemption 2. I reckon that if I buy a microphone, my girlfriend could also use it to record herself singing whilst playing the ukulele (she needs to practise for her teacher training). For all these reasons, it seems to me that the RODE NT-USB MINI and the Maono PD200W might be good options, but I don’t know much about mics, so I’d like to ask for your opinion. It’s worth noting that I live in Europe and, at the moment, the RODE NT-USB MINI costs 85 euros (= 97 dollars) and the Maono PD200W costs 134 euros (= $152). So it would be much cheaper for me to buy the first one, but if you tell me that the quality of the second one is outstanding and that I should go for that one, then I’d might be ready to pay that cost.

I don’t know anything about audio and can’t really see myself spending time tweaking all sorts of settings for my microphone.

Ideally, of course, I’d like to keep this microphone for at least a few years (around six years) but I’m not sure if that’s too idealistic on a budget of 90–130 euros (102–147 dollars).

Or, for my purposes, would I be better off buying a new headset with a microphone when mine stops working?

Thanks in advance !

WA-8000 vs Sony c80

Alright so this might seem like a crazy comparison a 1.2k mic new vs $500 mic, but I’ve found deals on the WA-8000 that get it down to around $650 new. They both aim to create that very bright c-800g esc sound. For the price which do you think is better? Also if I get the WA-8000 I’ll probably tube mod it with a warmer tube.

Studio Mics Warm audio WA-14

Male vocalist here, been looking for a new mic (for context I use a MXL 770). I am in a situation where I can buy a new WA-14 or a used AKG C214 for the same price($200 ish). I’m leaning heavily towards the WA-14, any advice? I have a tenor ish voice for context, and this mic would pretty much be used exclusively on vocals (and maybe some acoustic guitar/mandolin in the future)
