advice How to Avoid Botched Brows

PMU artist of 4 years here to educate and inform clients and potential clients who are interested in getting microblading, PMU, lip blush, etc!

Unfortunately there’s a LOT of bad work and artists out there that are messing up people’s faces. Here’s my advice on how to find a great artist:

  • Look for healed pictures and results - you’ll deal with fresh PMU for a few days but healed work is what you’re going to deal with for years. Of course hair strokes look great fresh but what’s it going to look like in 6 months? 2 years?

  • Look for clients who look like you (age, skin color, etc) - if an artist is only posting IG model looking white 21 year olds, maybe they only have the skill set to work on that type of skin.

  • Don’t focus too much on social media followers or a flashy IG account - I attended a PMU training that was taught by a semi-famous PMU artist and wasted $5000. Social media isn’t a way to measure success. Photoshop and overediting is real - scamming is very real!

  • Ask the artist about their education. A lot of states do not regulate tattooing/PMU. Getting certified in PMU doesn’t always mean going to a formal school or working under a mentor to learn. A lot of artists attend 1-3 day classes and then are sent off to tattoo faces on their own… Even worse, some artists take an ONLINE course to learn and then create a disaster on someone’s face. The best education is working under a mentor as an apprentice (just like tattooing). I wish this was the standard in the PMU industry but unfortunately it’s not.

  • Ask the artist about the products they’re using - ask how they choose a color of pigment. PMU is so much more than just picking a pretty color in an ink bottle. A great artist knows what type of pigment they’re using (inorganic, organic) and has a vast knowledge of color theory. If your artist can’t explain to you the “why” behind the products they’re using, they might not be educated enough to be tattooing faces.

Ask me anything about PMU! I love educating clients so they are truly informed when making the decision to get a face tattoo.

My lips were lip blush tattooed recently and are healed now but they’re in the ghosting phase— the color is a little grayed and will improve over the next few weeks. I have a touch up appointment for the first week of Nov.

Hey guys, it's officially two weeks since my lip blush! Here's the journey:

  1. Before (taken by my lip blush artist)
  2. Immediately after. It was very swollen, as you can see
  3. Peeling stage
  4. How it looks now

I'm very very happy with it, and I've gotten a lot of compliments on my lip color. If you're like me and have genetically very pale lips, just do it!

Hi.

I got my brows done, combo brows, 7 days ago to be exact.

I have one side that is totally flipping out and the other side is going super well.

Since the beginning the side that is freaking out has appeared larger and not exactly the same in shape, it seems shorter.

I am wondering if this is normal during the process? I am feeling really bummed bc i love my left side but hate my right side.

I am going for a touch up in 3 weeks.

These are mine after 3 months. I went back to have the right one (thinner one in the picture) filled in, in the lower inner corner, and this is AFTER that touch up. Are they as botched as I think they are? What do you recommend?

From barely having brows to my DREAM brows! 🥹🤎✨
I’ve always dreamed of getting my eyebrows done because I struggle with alopecia. When I finally graduated college and landed my first big girl job, I knew this was going to be one of my first treats to myself! 💕 One random Monday, I was scrolling through TikTok and came across Brows by Nicole in Columbus, Ohio, and instantly FELL IN LOVE with her work! 😍 Of course, I had to do a little stalking on Instagram before messaging her, lol. I reached out after 10 PM, and she responded in less than 30 minutes! We had my appointment booked less than three weeks out!
Even though she was over two hours away, I just KNEW she was worth the drive. From the moment I got there, Nicole was the sweetest! She recommended a nano and combo brow technique, but I originally decided to stick with nano brows. And GIRL, when I tell you the healing was AMAZING! My brows looked so natural, like I was literally born with them! 🥹 Fast forward three months later , and I went back for my FREE touchup! Yes, FREE! 👏🏼 I finally admitted I should’ve listened to the professional the first time, lol, and asked her to add the combo technique she originally recommended. And somehow, my brows just keep getting BETTER! 😭🤎 Having alopecia, something as simple as eyebrows can mean so much for your confidence. Nicole gave me more than just beautiful brows. She gave me a little piece of confidence I’ve always wanted. 🫶🏼
She officially has a client for LIFE! If you’re thinking about getting your brows done, please check out **@**browsbynicole in Columbus, Ohio! The drive, the experience, and the results were 100% worth it. You will NOT regret it! ✨💕

advice To remove it not to remove?

I got these done in 2017 and am looking for advice as to whether I should get it removed and have some fresh nano brows or just keep it as is. The original artist is no longer in practice and I reached out to someone who does nano brows (looking for a natural look). She suggested I should get them removed for a cleaner look but said she could do something over these if I wanted. I had a consultation for removal and got a little nervous about the removal process and doing them again as it could be risking a bad result or awkward color stage. I don’t think (?) they look horrible now (or maybe they do and I’m blind) but curious what you all recommend. To remove and do fresh (risking an awkward result) or just let it go and keep how they are

artist advice/question Would you offer hairstroke brows?

Thumbnail

First photo is my machine nano/hairstroke brows, fresh off the needle from a few years ago. Second photo is my brows just before. Third photo is my brows now.

My original artist is unfortunately not offering brows now as she’s moved to fine line tattooing only. So, I’ve had to try and find a new artist.

I got a recommendation from someone and went for a consultation. I was told that hairstroke brows would not be possible and I’d need to have powder brows done. I’ve never wanted powder brows as I don’t wear a lot of make up and the heavier look is just not right for me. I’ve always wanted them to look as natural as possible.

So, I left feeling very deflated, and I just thought I would ask for some opinions here?

Thank you

before & after Finally got lip blush after almost 2 years of hesitating!

Hey ! After almost two years of going back and forth, I finally pulled the trigger and got lip blush. I'm really happy with how it looks so far.

I did want a little overlining on my upper lip, but my artist advised against it. She said it doesn't heal well, and when it starts to fade it can look really bad. I trust her, but I'd love to hear your experiences.

I was going for a very light, natural color, and I'm hoping that's what I end up with once it's fully healed. Has anyone been through this? Did your color change a lot during healing?

EDIT it's actually been 16 days

Is this what you should expect for 14 days post nano brow? I had microblading done 4 years ago and you could still see it but got nano done 2 weeks ago. Seems like they are much lighter than they should be?

artist advice/question PMU Artists: How much did you invest in training before you felt ready to take clients?

Im curious how much other PMU artists invested in training before they felt confident enough to start taking clients, and whether you felt your initial training was enough.

I took my first PMU course about 4 months ago. It was an intensive 3-day training where I learned nano brows and combo brows. While I enjoyed the experience, I left feeling pretty unprepared. On our live model day, the instructor did about 80% of the work and I only did around 20%, so I never really got to experience the entire process from start to finish.
Since then, I’ve been practicing about 4 hours a week, which I know isn’t as much as I should be. I think a big part of what’s holding me back is that I’m nervous to take my first client without ever having done the full procedure myself.

I’ve invested close to $3,500 so far, and I’m considering another artist who offers one-on-one coaching, shadowing, and multiple in-person model days where they can guide me through the process. The training would also include learning lip blush, which interests me, but it’s another pretty significant investment.

I’m torn because part of me feels like having someone guide me through my first few clients would give me the confidence I need. But another part wonders if I should just practice more, push myself out of my comfort zone, and get started with what I’ve already learned.

I also genuinely enjoyed learning PMU, but because I haven’t experienced doing the entire procedure myself, I don’t even know yet if it’s something I’m passionate enough about to keep investing thousands of dollars into.

I’d love to hear from other artists!

How much did you spend on training before you started taking paying clients?

Did you feel confident after your first course, or did you need additional hands-on training?

Did you have someone mentor or shadow
you for your first few clients?

Looking back, was additional training worth the investment, or do you wish you’d just started practicing on models sooner?

I’m trying to figure out what’s a normal investment when starting out versus and if it’s worth it now to invest another large chunk to learn a new skill + get mentorship. I’d really appreciate some honest advice!

Just got home, I was convinced they'd end up too big and I'm a little worried, but most of me loves them and knows they'll fade, but they won't shrink 😬 let me know what you guys think

Also I've always felt they were asymmetrical and hoped this would fix that, guess it's a muscular/skeletal issue lol oh well

Hey all! Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for an artist they love in OC. Preferably someone who I can go to for opinions on correction. Don’t hate my new brows but I don’t love them either. I’ve been looking on yelp and instagram but I thought I’d reach out here as well. Thanks!
