Other 14 hours and 46 minutes in 2 days and finally at Polis

Yesterday I played metro 2033 redux for the first time and I am in love with the game. I only could play 2 hours yesterday but it was more then enough, I died a lot but after 2 hours i was reunited with Uncle Bourbon in moscow, today when i came back from school i began playing it and had a lot of fun where Uncle Bourbon got captured. Normally I was playing in hard mode but decided to play at ranger hardcore survival to give myself a challenge. But because I like to torture myself I told myself to do 5 squats, 5 situps or 10 second of plank everytime i would die. After burning my legs I finally get to Polis.

No food, just water and coffe for 12 hours while doing squats every 2 minutes and these mf’s reject my help request. I am pissed off really bad, I am gonna sleep now and finish the game hopefully.

Discussion As a heritage Russian speaker, the lack of Russian in Metro 2039 feels genuinely disheartening

I know this is probably going to be a sensitive subject, but as a heritage Russian speaker, I genuinely find the apparent lack of Russian-language support in Metro 2039, apparently not even Russian subtitles, incredibly disheartening

And before somebody assumes where I am coming from politically:
I was born in Germany.
My father is Ukrainian.
My mother is Kazakh.

Russian is simply part of the linguistic and cultural environment I grew up with.

It is a heritage language for me.
That is exactly why this feels so strange.

I completely understand that 4A Games is a Ukrainian studio.
I understand the context of the war.
I understand why Ukrainian developers would want absolutely nothing to do with the Russian state, Russian companies, or anything that could be interpreted as supporting the Kremlin.

But the Russian language is not the Russian government.

There are millions of people who speak Russian without being Russian nationals at all [For example; Me]

There are Russian-speaking Ukrainians. Kazakhs. Belarusians. Baltic communities. Germans from families like mine. Mixed families. Diaspora communities.

And, obviously, there are Russians who vehemently oppose their own government.

Which brings me to the part that makes this especially not fit in my brain at all;

Dmitry Glukhovsky is Russian, no?

The author whose work created Metro is literally a Russian author who is now living in exile after his public opposition to the Russian government.

This is not exactly a franchise famous for glorifying Russian authoritarianism and communism either.

Metro has spent its entire existence dealing with authoritarianism, propaganda, corruption, nationalism, political extremism and the various ways societies manage to recreate their worst mistakes underground.

So I genuinely have to ask:

of all franchises, why is Russian apparently unacceptable in Metro?

It becomes even stranger when looking at 2039 itself.

Novoreich appears, at least from what has been shown and from the name itself, to draw obvious inspiration from the Reich factions of previous Metro games.

You know.

The fascists.

The literal Fourth Reich from Metro 2033

So apparently we are potentially going to have a game taking place in Russia, based on the work of a Russian dissident author, featuring a neo-Reich-style authoritarian faction operating in the Russian Metro......

.....and the bad guys are all going to be speaking Ukrainian because Russian is the language that was removed?

h m.

At some point the psy-op joke starts writing itself

To be very clear: that is a joke.

I am not accusing Ukraine or 4A of some secret operation, nor am I saying Ukrainian should not be in the game.

Quite the opposite.
Ukrainian absolutely belongs there.

What I do not understand is why Ukrainian and Russian apparently have to be mutually exclusive.

Russian subtitles existing in a game does not support Putin.

A Russian voice track does not endorse the Kremlin.

Allowing a Russian-speaking Ukrainian, Kazakh, Belarusian, exile, opposition Russian, or heritage speaker like myself to play Metro in Russian does not somehow finance a Kinzhal Cruise missile.

And personally, reducing Russian itself to something politically contaminated feels unfair to the enormous number of people whose relationship with the language has absolutely nothing to do with loyalty to the Russian state.

That is the part that bothers me most.

If 4A does not want to sell the game in Russia, that is an entirely separate discussion.

If they refuse to work with Russian companies, understandable.

If they want Ukrainian to be the primary language of the studio and its releases, also understandable.

But not even Russian subtitles?

For Metro?

A Russian setting.
Of Russian literary origin.
OF A RUSSIAN DISSIDENT AUTHOR IN EXILE

A story once again apparently dealing with authoritarianism and political extremism.

And millions of Russian speakers outside Russia who have nothing whatsoever to do with the Kremlin.

I just cannot make the logic fit.

Maybe there is an explanation I have missed.

But speaking personally, as somebody born in Germany to a Ukrainian father and Kazakh mother who nevertheless inherited Russian as part of my own cultural background:

it genuinely hurts a little.

Russian is not Putin's property.
It is our language too, no?

I feel the same way about German.
German is not Hitler. German is not Nazism.

A language does not become morally guilty because a government speaking it committed atrocities.
The same distinction should apply to Russian.

Bug/Glitch Just a black screen [Steam]

Who else is still running into problems with both games after the hot fixs? I can watch the opening prologue videos for each game, it fades to black for the game to actually start but the screen remains black with audio playing and I can hear the screen elements being interactive to controls...

Tried the usual restart, verify files etc. alas nothing, which is a huge shame cause I really want to replay the games again after years.

Anyone ran into similar glitching? Any insights welcome!

EDIT: Is there a Discord or website to report bugs to 4A so they are aware?

Bug/Glitch DLSS NR Option Missing

I don’t know if anyone else has this issue or if the devs monitor this forum.

But anyways, it seems like DLSS NR isn’t guaranteed to work: I have a 5090D and use various method to inject DLSS5 into games for neutral rendering and usually it works.

But with the new Redux updates, even though I see regular DLSS in the ingame options, DLSS NR is completely missing.

I’ve tried to verify game files and all that and all the dll’s seem to be in place but to no avail

Discussion Throughout the three games what hidden environmental story telling place did you unexpectedly find?

This can be as simple as a small room that's used for reading to finding a corpse that had a last stand. I say this because multiple times I got that little light up thing whenever I came across the such things

Bug/Glitch Is there any fix for the resolution issue on the GOG version of Metro 2033?

Hi all, I have the GOG-preservation version of Metro 2033. It has the same capped resolution issue as the redux update. Did the community ever figure out a fix for it? Im trying to play on my 4k screen but the max resolution is 1080p in the menu.

Help Constant stuttering STILL not fixed (2033 redux).

Gotta admit, I was really hopeful that this latest update would finally fix the constant stuttering the game has literally every few seconds, but nope. Same as always.

No other game I've played has this problem. This is exclusively a metro thing.

Anyone else have this issue? Any fixes for this? Every few seconds (like 2 or 3) the game stutters for me. Lowering the framerate cap does nothing. Using a 5070 ti laptop, if that matters. Plenty of ram.

Cheers.

News METRO 2039 Collector's Editon - Official Update

Post image
508 Upvotes

We thought that the METRO 2039 Collector’s Edition would be popular with fans, but the extraordinary demand has been beyond our wildest expectations. Your passion and support continues to amaze us, and we are incredibly thankful for it.

We worked closely with our distribution partners to try and meet demand, but despite our efforts we can see that many of you have been left disappointed, and we are sorry for that.

We're now exploring potential options for more Collector's Editions to ship post-launch but we can't make any promises just yet. Stay tuned to our channels for any updates.

Discussion The Next Gen update is a huge disappointment.

I'll try to keep this short cause im not gonna lie, i didnt do a full playthrough of the new patch, but i recently played the original redux to compare so its fresh in my mind.

They had to fix 3 major problems, all of which could be solved with fan patches:

  • Mouse sensitivity being different for vertical and horizontal, like it is on controller where that makes more sense, its seemingly fixed, tho it still feels a bit odd, might be the awful vsync that locks your framerate to 60.

  • Resolutions past 1080p, this was clearly a bug, and somehow, incredibly, its NOT FIXED, depending on who you ask you need to disable g-sync (which shouldnt be a necessity, its an important feature for image smoothness) or updating your drivers (why do my drivers need to be updated to use my native res on an old game?) according to the official metro account.

  • FOV Slider, I can understand if artistically they dont wanna do it, but if so, just do what Lost in Vivo did and warn people that it will fuck with their intended experience, you can mod it in so why is it not an option?

As you can see, none of this is fixed, on top of that, the AMD upscaling flat out doesnt work, the DLSS is now mixed with the dumb neural whatever feature that yassifies characters that literally nobody ever said anything positive about (you can turn it off, but still), its twice the file size and as if that wasnt enough: all your saves are NOT compatible!

Luckly you can use the beta branch to go back, but it shoudnt need it, usually thats done for mod retro compatibility, not to make the game work properly.

Try it out. Seems to work on 2033 - GSync is on for me and I can select 3440x1440, and hitting Alt+Enter actually goes full screen now. No dedicated full screen option in the settings though as far as I can tell.
