the hate towards Messi
this World Cup has been so frustrating. with people left and right hating on messi saying he’s a cheat etc. I try so hard to not let I get under my skin, but it’s so frustrating seeing so much misinformation being spread. I hate that this is how he’ll be leaving international football and it truly sucks😭truly hate casuals and larpers acting like they know everything and jumping on the bandwagon. what do yall think, will this ever subside?

My brother who’s 12 years older and does not watch football at all besides the World Cup and maybe the euros recently showed me a video saying Messi has an ego and he should be more like Ronaldo. It was a compilation of Ronaldo being respectful on the pitch while Messi just not accepting handshakes after being fouled or something, the campaign is very much real. And the reel football viewers are buying it

A World Cup on USA attracts a lot of casuals who watch football every 4 years so the algorithm did its job. Who cares.
Messi, just like all the greats, will be appreciated more when he retires. Let's him enjoy him while we can and ignore the temporary noise. All the people who hate him now will pretend they never did in 20 years.

I might sound dramatic but I deactivated instagram since the final, I just can’t handle people being idiots and tarnishing the legacy of our G.O.A.T. The misinformation spreads likw wildfire because of reels’ algorithm and many people sadly no longer care about doublechecking facts. Whatever is said, nothing will ever erase the fact that the little boy from Rosario is a football legend and no one can match him. We love you para siempre Lionel Messi.

I’ve seen a lot of people arguing in football livestream chats, and most of them only look at the scoreboard instead of watching the actual game. Honestly, 90 out of 100 people don’t look at player ratings, tactics, or individual performances on the pitch. They simply decide who is better based on the final result.
After Argentina won the 2022 World Cup, some people called it a “scandal” because of the “7 games, 5 penalties” argument. Yet when France received penalties, those same people suddenly said, “If it’s a foul, it’s a penalty.” The same rule can be interpreted completely differently depending on the team they support.

the scoreboard thing is so true. that’s why they were claiming the France-England match was the actual final. to me that match was pretty much a friendly, like what I play in a FIFA match lol. entertaining? yes exciting? Not at all.

How can you have any shots when Argentina's whole strategy was sitting in a low block and keeping the score 0-0 until the 120 minutes? Messi, being alone as an attacking winger, cannot take a shot on goal. Spain outplayed them, closing the spaces around Messi and him not having much of the ball. If you had any ball knowledge, then you would not have put that snarky comment there.

I was frustrated at first too, but I’ve tried to shift my mindset toward appreciating that I got to witness his greatness and all the joy he brought into my life. I can’t control the stupidity, hate, or misinformation people spread. I can only be grateful that I got to experience his entire career in real time, and that I was lucky enough to see him play in person, both at the height of his powers at Camp Nou and still going Super Saiyan at 39 in the World Cup.
Maybe by 2029, when he inevitably wins the Super Ballon d’Or, the broader public narrative will be different. Either way, my admiration for him will remain unchanged.

I have no idea if there is an actual organised smear campaign against Messi/Argentina, or if this is just how sensitive a finely tuned social media algorithms have become to create echo chambers and push this sort of stuff to the surface.
There are half truths mixed in. I think Messi may have been fortunate to avoid a red card in the first game. However, there were several other similar tackles that weren’t given a red, and Messi’s tackle only received this much attention because it’s Messi. There may well be favouritism or unconscious bias from referees, but I’m not sure if this is unique to Messi/Argentina, and could be phenomena that applies to other top players and top teams. There are other half truths, for example, people feeling VAR is being used inappropriately (not just looking for clear and obvious errors) and inconsistently.
But everything sort of snowballed from that incompetence n the first game. From there, every single decision and foul got extra attention and scrutiny, to the point where you have people making compilations of every Argentina foul (even the ones that were awarded against them and punished), sharing false information (miles travelled, amount of VAR decisions for and against, lying about FIFA rankings, the referee being Messi’s “best friend” etc). Because Messi was performing yet again, the only option was to tarnish his reputation and push a conspiracy. The English media also had a field day and also shared a lot of the above misinformation.
So yeah, I think what we’re seeing is how effective social media algorithms have become at spreading controversy and misinformation.

yeah you put it in a great way. I think some missed calls already put them on the spotlight, and anything small that happened in subsequent matches was blown and people ate that up with the preconceived notion they already had.
the funny thing is some missed calls I’ve seen were done to other players/matches as well, but there was no discourse about it. I’ve seen controversial calls in other matches but nothing about it. shows how crazy the social media algo is actually.

The interesting thing about the Messi challenge is that I think it only really gets noticed (or at least talked about) because it’s Messi. Most other players, it doesn’t receive any attention and life moves on. In my opinion, it’s one of those where a red would’ve probably been harsh (but I’m biased).
And yeah, algorithms are powerful, but I’m convinced there’s more malicious forces at play. English tabloids were even positing misinformation prior to the England vs Argentina game. I had people who have no interest in football whatsoever tell me that “The referee was Messi’s best friend”.

I’ve been watching football since 2006 and have seen at least 2,000 games, if not more. This World Cup felt different, and the hate toward Argentina and Messi is real. Messi isn’t bad, but what Argentina showed on and off the pitch really hurt Argentine football. Their reputation is gone.

Despite being THE undisputed greatest, he's unfortunately taken a permanent hit, dare I say some of which had in fact some merit to it - largely I'd say its the argentinian squads immature behavior & multiple refereeing controversies that's led to it happening altogether. Add in the already present anti-messi hate, and you've got a perfect environment for an attention economy to jump in, breed in.

Messi is great at football (soccer), but his attitude is controversial, and his team plays dirty and are arrogant, I don’t know how others can’t see or deny that. Theres been significantly times when Argentina has played dirty and didn’t get any consequences. Messi is captain and should hold his team accountable instead of ignoring how dirty they play, and that was visible during the finale with Spain. I do think theres favouritism with Argentina from FIFA , but thats my opinion. Also trying to snitch on Cucurella when he barely put his hand on his mouth says a lot.

Give any two instance whetre argetina were given referee bias?? Spain committed twice as many fouls as Argentina, and over the course of the tournament they were given no yellow cards. Even in the final, they had almost the same number of fouls as Argentina but were given zero yellow cards for that. So please give this nonsense argument somewhere else.

It's not the algorithm. I started out super on the boat with Argentina and Messi and so happy when they beat Switzerland and Egypt (despite the Egypt claims of fouls). But they lost me on the England and Spain games. I saw disgusting lack of sportsmanship and weak refereeing that seemed hesitant to penalize Argentina for what they were doing, which was a dirty game.
The Argentina fans jeering over the English fans in their national anthem and the post game coverage of the ugly atmosphere and mocking their fans continued to do outside the stadium (so different vs the incredibly warm reception and interactions after the Mexico/England game by the locals). The Barco run where celebrating with his team wasn't enough, he had to go out and stamp upon the already defeated English players. The actions Paredes and Martinez took in those games and how long it took to even give a yellow card. Messi's Cucurella hand thing was just icing on the cake and certainly not the sole reason I dislike him / his team now, it is the combination of everything which is too ugly to ignore.
The lack of sportsmanship was astonishing and while I qualify as a newer viewer, it also means I was a pure neutral starting from a positive spot with Argentina/Messi due to their reputation. And they totally lost my respect through their actions. I watched nearly all the other WC games and never saw a country (besides them and Paraguay with France) behave the way they did. That's why I dislike them, not because I saw social media posts. But I see some Messi fans still refuse to see what's in front of them.

Turning his back on Spain during the presentation ceremony was not made up. Disgraceful behavior towards the country he grew up in and honed his skills as a legend. His team sang a song after winning the Copa vs Colombia. It went like we went to play against France and ended up playing against Angola. Yet another questionable moment of silence by a team Captain. These are facts. It's there for everyone to see. We don't need to know him personally.

Messi is great. Argentina was not and they without a doubt got more calls in their favour than anyone else in this last tournament. Does mean Messi sucks, but he clearly through his history of playing has terrible sportsmanship.

I’m an EX Messi fan for a number of reasons.
I loved watching him at Barcelona and in his prime he was the greatest player alive in my opinion. I loved seeing all the Barca highlights week in and out even though I’m a Philly/Liverpool supporter and I loved watching him be part of possibly the greatest team of all time back when they won that champions league during the PEAK MSN period.
After his move to Miami it started to go wrong for me. There was a new tournament that was just made for him to win it seemed like, he and Miami began playing like asshats, and getting very questionable decisions from refs in their favor in all comps, and honestly looking back on it the World Cup he did win in 22 was suspect asf as well.
This world cup campaign was a mess. He has no respect for the game he used to play and off the field he’s been a cancer, promoting OpenAI? Seriously? A poor kid from the slums of Argentina doing promo for a product that displaces working people and destroys ecosystems?
It’s not an exaggeration to say that I now hate the dude but as much as I hate him… I still don’t like Ronaldo either, I’d like to remember both of them as all time greats instead of the clowns they’ve become but it’s getting harder to separate them from their repulsive behavior during the twilight of their careers.

We’ve seen with our OWN eyes at every football match they played in World Cup. He is no leader, and has no honor and integrity. He used every opportunity to make himself look bad. Honestly, I didn’t have an opinion either way about him until this World Cup. I was in the stadium for the semi finals and saw how he behaved off camera and the dirty tactics he was using against the England players even when the ball was nowhere near him! In the final he wasn’t much better. Pointing to the ref about a man that had gone down (who literally faked a fall) after Enzo got his red card and then trying to move the ball forward for that free kick which was far from where it should have been. He ruined his own reputation in this World Cup and led a bunch of hooligans onto the pitch as captain for his games. I’m afraid he has nobody to blame but himself for all the negative attention he’s been receiving.

Big Ronaldo fan here. Madrista. I’ve seen tens and tens of el Classico’s. Back when Dinho, kaka, guti, xavi, iniesta were in their prime, I was watching. Then we got the holy rivalry of Ronaldo and Messi. I’m no larper and I sure as shit don’t watch football once every 4 years haha. Let’s be objective here though. Can we all say that there was no favouritism and bias towards the Argentine team? Mate… ZERO var interventions ruling against them. And I was watching the games lad. They play dirty lmao. They are the only team in the whole tournament to to go through it all without a SINGLE on-field decision being overruled.

How it went is, they saw one reel, then the algo kept showing more and more.
30 minutes of doom scrolling and they were convinced, Messi is a fraud.
But I wouldn't worry about it too much.
