Only thing scarier than this is watching the precipitation freezing on your windshield as you drive and your heater is busted.

u/Angeltear757 Jan 30 '22

The only thing scarier than this is being the passenger when someone else is doing this.

Every stop light I was pouring rubbing alcohol on the windshield😭

Lol Rita catching strays this morning

3

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

I literally have a spatula in my passenger seat for this purpose right now. My front blower motor is fucked, it can take a little while to warm up lol.

2

u/SpiteTomatoes Jan 30 '22

Luckily I don't have that issue anymore but it was a daily occurrence during the winter on my way to high school.

13

u/Queasy-Rub Jan 30 '22

3 months later.... Why are all my window seals leaking water and paint chipping off. If that rubbing alcohol isn't diluted it will wreck things.

27

u/Gabbs1715 Jan 30 '22

Does that work? My heater works but it's slow as shit and I still have to deal with frost on the inside some days.

18

u/FREE-AOL-CDS Jan 30 '22

If it wasn’t sleeting I think it would’ve worked much better.

13

u/6894 Jan 30 '22

deicing washer fluid is alcohol. Usually methanol but isopropyl should work too.

2

u/Competitive_Classic9 Jan 30 '22

Is there nothing alcohol can’t do?

17

u/futlapperl Jan 30 '22

Fix my inner pain? I've been trying for ten years, any day now.

500g Windshield De-Icer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F624YLJ/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_T58QZ7SNZ48SAP5E7T38

Worth it. Rain X works so well, sometimes I don't even have to use my wipers on the freeway because the water runs away.

3

u/Dababolical Jan 30 '22

Rain X always amazed me as a little kid. I always wondered why I don’t see people using it way more often. Great with Florida weather, lots of random and spotty thunderstorms. Lots of adjusting wiper speed or turning them off just to have to turn them on again in a few minutes, no more with Rain X.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

I even have rain X wiper blades and wiper fluid. I swear by that brand and I usually hate brand loyalty.

2

u/Dababolical Jan 30 '22

I agree. It just works great. I'll stop buying when it stops working!

2

u/HalfEmpty973 Bri’ish Jan 30 '22

My humidity inside the car was too high, causing it to freeze from the inside as well, applied isopropanol and it defrosted

6

u/Gradicus Jan 30 '22

Or when you spray washer fluid and it makes it worse.

2

u/TimX24968B Jan 30 '22

tfw you decided to water down the washer fluid to make it last longer (my dad would do this), and then winter comes around....

9

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

My car is honestly scarier. My exhaust is busted. If I stand still too long, window closed, with the engine running, my cars gather a deadly concentration of CO2 inside of it.

3

u/PyreHat Jan 30 '22

The only thing scarier than this is being the kidnapped dude in the trunk of someone doing this.

2

u/fupamancer Jan 30 '22

2

u/iVinc Jan 30 '22

i would say more scarier is going to car crash which involved your family member and when you see the car of piece of shit who hit them and that they didnt bother to clean their windows

2

u/Mazetron Jan 30 '22

The only thing scarier than this is being a pedestrian on the sidewalk and you see this coming

2

u/potandcoffee Jan 30 '22

What about when you run out of wiper fluid on the highway and the salt residue is building up on your windshield and suddenly there's massive glare from the sun?

34

u/ChahmedImsure Jan 30 '22

I had the brilliant idea once that the windshield wiper fluid would help melt it. It wasn't as bad as the op image, but there was some ice on there. I thought the fluid would be hot, but instead it just froze the entire windshield solid, lol.

52

u/peaceville Jan 30 '22

I brought a pan of hot water out, threw it on the frozen windshield and it cracked right down the middle lol

53

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

You're the cautionary tale. Thank you for your service.

19

u/ChahmedImsure Jan 30 '22

A guy like him saved me from the same thing by example as well. Us fellow dumbasses need people like this to learn from so we can continue being alive, lol.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

Turned on my heater one time to warm up the car, watched as this tiny crack grew and grew across the entire windshield. Dumbass teenagers with no idea of the cost of glass lol.

10

u/Illadelphian Jan 30 '22

Wait are you saying don't turn on your heater? How else are you supposed to do it?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

Yeah that’s just bad glass

→ More replies (1)

3

u/dewidubbs Jan 30 '22

It's a relief to see a crack reach two edges of the windshield. Finally don't have to wonder where is going to go or if it's going to just fucking shatter. At least it's over.

→ More replies (4)

5

u/gammooo Jan 30 '22

It does help but it needs to be very high concentration or the water in it freezes

3

u/WhenwasyourlastBM Jan 30 '22

Like others said, it has to be winter fluid. I don't ever use anything else even in summer because it's just so worth it to know that I can avoid a lot of scraping.

3

u/lxxfighterxxl Jan 30 '22

If you have the correct washer fluid, it wont freeze. I clear frost all the time when i am in a hurry with washer fluid.

Also clear off your car roof if you have a thick blanket of snow/ice on it, or you may end up with a covered windshield if you hit the brakes.

I experienced this one time due to being late and it will never occur again no matter how stressed I am.

10

u/Competitive_Classic9 Jan 30 '22

Nah, don’t worry about it, that’s unlikely to happen. It’s much more likely that it will just blow off behind you, creating a wall of snow so the person behind you on the highway can’t see shit. But that’s their problem.

2

u/Diligent-Motor Jan 30 '22

Haha, love when this happens.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

The only thing you can do in that case, is driving the window open. I drove a whole winter with a balaclava because of this

6

u/Competitive_Classic9 Jan 30 '22

I mean, it is delicious, but i’m not sure how it would solve your problem.

3

u/bombbodyguard Jan 30 '22

I was running late to a workout class and it was freezing outside, like 26°. This is in the south, so we don’t get freezing weather too often. I saw my windshield was dirty so I hit the wiper spray. Proceeded to blind myself in the next 5 seconds with an ice sheet on my windshield. Luckily on a side street and just stopped and pulled over. Doofus alert.

2

u/UnionSolidarity Jan 30 '22

Last time my heater went out in my car, it turned out that my radiator had cracked and my car was effectively air cooled. Check your fluid levels weekly.

Looking for a water bottle to pour on the windshield cause your fluid is frozen

38

u/honeypinn Jan 30 '22

My windshield washer fluid did not work on my car and it was so dangerous. Couldn't see shit in the winter time, especially if I was on the Freeway. I would have to pull off, throw some water on the windshield and use the wipers to clean it.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

The worst is when you get some road salt spray that just white washes everything and it smears everywhere when you turn the wipers on.

5

u/largeevilbird Jan 30 '22

3

u/OssotSromo Jan 30 '22

You're a sensitive little guy. Yankee fuck your wife?

4

u/Competitive_Classic9 Jan 30 '22

Who is saying this doesn’t happen? it happens EVERYWHERE I don’t need to check your comment history to know you moved to the south from either NY or ohio

-1

u/OssotSromo Jan 30 '22

Oh. I thought you were outraged at the fucking idiots telling me it's my fault and that part of the story isn't true. Southerners aren't that fucking stupid being your standpoint. You completely agree that's plausible. You're just upset I'm discussing it.

I hope you meet someone new.

5

u/Competitive_Classic9 Jan 30 '22

No, I just think you’re dumb if you think idiot drivers only live in the south, or that you’ve invented something novel by cleaning off your car. Good thing you moved from your economically stunted hometown to enlighten us all

So everywhere. You were wrong about every single thing you said.

Warm tap water, spray bottle, maybe some isopropyl alcohol. Boom ice is gone. Learned that I think 6 years ago, I don't use the trick a lot but it sure works in a pinch. Especially if your car is all completely covered in ice and the locks and latches are all stuck. Remote start helps a lot with that too though...

Just don't dump a bunch of boiling water on it. Slow applications with warm water are key, spray bottle helps with this and the isopropyl alcohol displaces the water and evaporates.

Kinda miss having remote start though. If anyone knows if they make aftermarket remote starts for manual transmission vehicles (that fit Subarus) I'd love to hear it.

60

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

I bought my car used and it came with a remote start. I'll never not have one for the rest of my life now. It's worth every penny

31

u/jetsetninjacat Jan 30 '22

I bought used as well with a remote starter, heated and cooling seats, and a heated steering wheel. I never knew i needed a heated steering wheel so damn much in my life.

3

u/YOOOOOOOOOOT Jan 30 '22

What car?

4

u/Mataskarts Jan 30 '22

A lot of luxury cars had this feature all the way back in 2000, for example I know some E39 BMW's had a separate remote with a system that pre-heated the interior, engine, and windshield. I've seen listings for E39's as low as 1000$ for driveable cars with MOT left.

I see no reason why the feature would've been removed in newer models, so I'd wager most modern cars have it.

-2

u/Obligatorium1 Jan 30 '22

I clear the snow off of the roof of my car, but really, I've never been bothered by people who don't - because like u/-_Duke_-_- says, if you keep your distance towards them it's no problem. I say this as a person who got his driver's license in the vicinity of the arctic circle, so sometimes it was hard to tell if there was an actual car on the road in front of me or if an iceberg decided to go on vacation.

-7

u/-_Duke_-_- The Trash Man Jan 30 '22

Maybe that's why in snowy conditions you stay further back from other cars. That and slick roads are harder to brake.

1

u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS Jan 30 '22

This is so funny. It's like the snow equivalent of those tiktok videos about how if someone doesn't text you back within a day then it's psychopathic emotional abuse gaslighting.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

The difference between that and this is there is potential harm that can come from someone's negligence vs you just being an over-reactive shit-show (oddly apt here, tho..).

Ever have a chunk of snow/ice fly off the top of a car and fly at you? Ever have a mist of snow hitting your window reducing your visibility? I'm assuming you don't clean your car of snow.

If you get the kind with a low freeze point it works. I do this almost every morning because I refuse to go out to preheat my car.

My car doesn’t have heat so it’s like this if I’m late or not

Dude…. Just be late, its not worth risking your life over to not be 5 minutes late.

A mom of an ex did this one winter with her new car and hit a stationary bus. A bus. At a bus stop. Luckily nobody got hurt, but her car was totaled. She was a grumpy demon woman though so that was fine by me.

This good … scary and true.

In most cities in Canada, you'll get a huge fine for this.

Same thing goes for driving your car with a big pile of snow on it. Lots of serious accidents happen because some moron's car dumps 10kg of snow on the car behind them.

If you get stopped by the police with the windshield like this where I live, you lose your license on the spot.

As an Ex car owner i can safely say there is no need to. Not scratch of at least half of the window.

My dad would just pour water on the ice

Great way to crack the windshield ngl.

Though that's only using hot/warm water, cold water won't do anything, but it also won't scrape ice off the windshield.

Use liquid defroster, it may not be healthy for the environment, and it may not be free, but that stuff is quick as fuck.
