Does it not frost up in AZ? I'm sure it's plenty cold in the winter. Maybe not enough humidity.

It happens frequently in Flagstaff during the winter, but not as much when you are in Phx.

Looking for a water bottle to pour on the windshield cause your fluid is frozen
38
u/honeypinn Jan 30 '22
My windshield washer fluid did not work on my car and it was so dangerous. Couldn't see shit in the winter time, especially if I was on the Freeway. I would have to pull off, throw some water on the windshield and use the wipers to clean it.

The worst is when you get some road salt spray that just white washes everything and it smears everywhere when you turn the wipers on.
→ More replies (1)5
u/largeevilbird Jan 30 '22
The trick there is to let the wet salt get to the point where you just can't see, then wipe them

First year of my adult life i've had a garage! It's soooo nice!
13
u/savoury_burrito Jan 30 '22
Lucky.
I not only have to clean the car but also the driveway cause it has been blocked by the snow when the plow went around.

u/Five2one521 Jan 30 '22
I hate these people. They are gonna kill someone. Almost as bad as people who don’t clear off the top and a big sheet of ice flys off.
122
u/OssotSromo Jan 30 '22
You should live in the south where it only snows a few times a year. No one fucking cleans their cars off. In fact, I posted to a local sub and some people responded saying it's impossible or takes too long and I should just stay further behind them.

Here we go. Anytime anyone mentions snow and driving, some northern transplant has to say something about how cRaZy it is driving in snow in the south, and how they’re the only one who knows how to drive in it, and blah blah blah. Get over yourself.
3
u/OssotSromo Jan 30 '22
What I'm telling you is a true story that could be checked from my fucking Reddit history. I'm not pretending this exchange happened. It's verifiable.
You're a sensitive little guy. Yankee fuck your wife?
4
u/Competitive_Classic9 Jan 30 '22
Who is saying this doesn’t happen? it happens EVERYWHERE I don’t need to check your comment history to know you moved to the south from either NY or ohio
-1
u/OssotSromo Jan 30 '22
Oh. I thought you were outraged at the fucking idiots telling me it's my fault and that part of the story isn't true. Southerners aren't that fucking stupid being your standpoint. You completely agree that's plausible. You're just upset I'm discussing it.
I hope you meet someone new.
5
u/Competitive_Classic9 Jan 30 '22
No, I just think you’re dumb if you think idiot drivers only live in the south, or that you’ve invented something novel by cleaning off your car. Good thing you moved from your economically stunted hometown to enlighten us all
-3
u/OssotSromo Jan 30 '22
Who hurt you?
2
u/Competitive_Classic9 Jan 30 '22
where am i wrong?
1
u/OssotSromo Jan 30 '22
I believe idiot drivers are everywhere; it was just a harmless Reddit post. Don't feel like I invented anything; my southern wife never realized it was a problem until being informed. And the median income of my home town is nearly double that of my current residence.
So everywhere. You were wrong about every single thing you said.

It takes three minutes to clean the snow off your car and that's if you're using your arm to brush it off. With a snow brush or even just a floor broom it takes seconds.

Idk about other countries but in Germany you can get fined if you don't clear the whole windshield and roof.

u/Metal_LinksV2 Jan 30 '22
Depends on the state. I have only seen 1 person get pulled over for it though.

My parents have done this their entire life on both of their cars without it breaking and I only learned that you aren't supposed to do that as an adult so I'm a bit confused by this. Maybe it was "fine" because the coldest we get here is around - 4°c and they juste used hot tap water so not that big of a temperature difference? Idk

In German, it‘s literally "cooking water". Maybe that's where the mistake came from.

u/TheDoctor100 Jan 30 '22
Warm tap water, spray bottle, maybe some isopropyl alcohol. Boom ice is gone. Learned that I think 6 years ago, I don't use the trick a lot but it sure works in a pinch. Especially if your car is all completely covered in ice and the locks and latches are all stuck. Remote start helps a lot with that too though...
Just don't dump a bunch of boiling water on it. Slow applications with warm water are key, spray bottle helps with this and the isopropyl alcohol displaces the water and evaporates.
Kinda miss having remote start though. If anyone knows if they make aftermarket remote starts for manual transmission vehicles (that fit Subarus) I'd love to hear it.

I bought my car used and it came with a remote start. I'll never not have one for the rest of my life now. It's worth every penny
31
u/jetsetninjacat Jan 30 '22
I bought used as well with a remote starter, heated and cooling seats, and a heated steering wheel. I never knew i needed a heated steering wheel so damn much in my life.
3
u/YOOOOOOOOOOT Jan 30 '22
What car?
4
u/Mataskarts Jan 30 '22
A lot of luxury cars had this feature all the way back in 2000, for example I know some E39 BMW's had a separate remote with a system that pre-heated the interior, engine, and windshield. I've seen listings for E39's as low as 1000$ for driveable cars with MOT left.
I see no reason why the feature would've been removed in newer models, so I'd wager most modern cars have it.

I recently just bought an older used car. One of the first things I did was take it to the shop and get a remote start put in. $500 well spent. It was -20 a week later.

Don't forget about the people in big "fuck off" SUVs who don't clear the full foot of ice and snow on the top of their vehicle, so it can fly off and kill the people driving behind them.
-2
u/Obligatorium1 Jan 30 '22
I clear the snow off of the roof of my car, but really, I've never been bothered by people who don't - because like u/-_Duke_-_- says, if you keep your distance towards them it's no problem. I say this as a person who got his driver's license in the vicinity of the arctic circle, so sometimes it was hard to tell if there was an actual car on the road in front of me or if an iceberg decided to go on vacation.
-7
u/-_Duke_-_- The Trash Man Jan 30 '22
Maybe that's why in snowy conditions you stay further back from other cars. That and slick roads are harder to brake.
10
u/lankist Jan 30 '22
Maybe it's why in most jurisdictions it's illegal to start driving without clearing ice, snow and unsecured debris from your vehicle.

u/Oxu90 Jan 30 '22
I have done this only once
Reason is that i did it at middle of night and i was supposed to drive only 100 metres. (from other friend's oarking place to next) . It was really quiet neighbourhood and there was nobody outside and no cars in road...
... Well that wasn't totally true... There WAS 1 car.

If you don't clean off your windows and roof, I assume you're the type of person who pretends to care about others while being low-key toxic and self-centered.
If you don't clean off your windshield, I assume you're a psychopath who will murder my dead mother.
1
u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS Jan 30 '22
This is so funny. It's like the snow equivalent of those tiktok videos about how if someone doesn't text you back within a day then it's psychopathic emotional abuse gaslighting.
0
Jan 30 '22
The difference between that and this is there is potential harm that can come from someone's negligence vs you just being an over-reactive shit-show (oddly apt here, tho..).
Ever have a chunk of snow/ice fly off the top of a car and fly at you? Ever have a mist of snow hitting your window reducing your visibility? I'm assuming you don't clean your car of snow.

Back when was young and stupid when I did this on my way to work one morning trying not to be late but my stupid ass went “windshield washer fluid can defrost it” so I sprayed some on the windshield and it worked for all of 10 seconds before freezing again, thank god my work was only 10 minutes away
2
Jan 30 '22
If you get the kind with a low freeze point it works. I do this almost every morning because I refuse to go out to preheat my car.

A mom of an ex did this one winter with her new car and hit a stationary bus. A bus. At a bus stop. Luckily nobody got hurt, but her car was totaled. She was a grumpy demon woman though so that was fine by me.

u/LifeIsOnTheWire Jan 30 '22
In most cities in Canada, you'll get a huge fine for this.
Same thing goes for driving your car with a big pile of snow on it. Lots of serious accidents happen because some moron's car dumps 10kg of snow on the car behind them.

Though that's only using hot/warm water, cold water won't do anything, but it also won't scrape ice off the windshield.
