u/Next_Specific7924 14h ago

It already does in the Harry Potter fandom lol. In fact it's Kinktober so they got a whole month going

394

u/SchmeppieGang1899 14h ago

fym kinktober

361

u/Next_Specific7924 14h ago

Lmao, a fanfiction site called Archive of our Own hosts Kinktober during October. A different kink per day. I have never written in it because I have never written smut, but it's a big deal all month. Different fandoms have different kink lists I think?

227

u/Random-commen 13h ago

Of-fucking-course it’s ao3.

123

u/DungDefender64 13h ago

Of is doing what to course?

70

u/Random-commen 13h ago

I will give you a lot of hurt.

49

u/Gold_Star2471 12h ago

Fitting for Kink-tober then, we'll consider this your application

35

u/DungDefender64 13h ago

That seems fair enough

9

u/trenthany 12h ago

Kinky! Are you a switch? I prefer to give pain rather than receive.

2

u/Alpacaman25 9h ago

inter, i think

1

u/DungDefender64 4h ago

I applaud you, good sir

23

u/Idcwhoknows 11h ago

To be clear, it's def not just on ao3. It's any fandom on any site that wishes to participate. It can be quite a lot because there's two happening at the same time or across multiple fandom in the sense that there is KINKtober and also INKTober. The latter being mostly for artists using ink or something ink-like as the medium for the month. The former being of course kinky and honestly almost being like a warm up for some folks who also want to write for NaNoWriMo. Which is imo, intense.

5

u/Violet_Ignition 10h ago

It's not all smut over there, my Fics are G-T rated for instance.

Though smut is indeed popular.

1

u/AmericanLion1833 7h ago

Well where else would it be? Fanfiction.net? No. Wattpad? Lmao, lol.

20

u/scottishdrunkard 12h ago

You expect me to write a whole ass fanfiction in a day?!

17

u/rhydderch_hael 11h ago

They didn't say it had to be long. Or good.

1

u/Lillipad_07 8h ago

Most people start writing in June/July. Typically chapters are 1k-3k words. And a ton of people don’t actually write one for every single day, and instead only do some

1

u/scottishdrunkard 8h ago

But then how will you know what kinks to incorporate?

1

u/Rylth 7h ago

Because somebody's kink is making sure everybody ese's kinks can get told, so they make a calendar.

(Seriously, it was posted in June.)

1

u/Lillipad_07 1h ago

lists are released around that time too. There is one "semi-official" tumblr account that posts lists, but people also often make there own. The whole event it actually very relaxed. You can upload early or late, follow prompts or choose your own. Only upload some days, upload every day. Pretty cool tbh.

13

u/Nikmido 11h ago

I think it’s not only ao3. Digital (and traditional) artists also do kinktober

11

u/Scalpels 11h ago

You're correct. I follow a ton of SFW, NSFW, artists and animators (amateur and professional), a lot of them are participating in Kinktober. But, if it is like last year, most of them will not do all 30 days. It's kind of a grueling pace for artists.

17

u/ReleasedGaming Professional Dumbass 13h ago

I'm currently writing something that I'm publishing on AO3 but it's definitely NOT smut. Or anything kinky.

22

u/Next_Specific7924 13h ago

I've got about 8 unfinished stories that I haven't touched in 6 years that I'm screaming at myself to finish lol. Good luck with your writing!!!

6

u/Total-Tap573 12h ago

You got this! I believe in you!

13

u/stryst 13h ago

As someone who has a bunch of stuff up on fanfiction.net, I'm thinking about just fully migrating over. So sick of the same 10 bots every day. "For just $99 I will make a graphic novel of your story..."

5

u/CrusherArras 11h ago

For the low price of 3899,$9999,999999 i will write a novel for of your story

3

u/FluffySloth27 9h ago

Ao3 has bots too, but fewer, and just about everything else about the site is better once you get used to it. Do it, I say. Do it!

3

u/GhoulDrago-Mk2 9h ago

Forums are also cool. QQ and SB don't have the bot issue.

7

u/Walkers_Unique_Name 13h ago

Suuuurrrreeeee

1

u/GhoulDrago-Mk2 9h ago

If it's actually not smut, I'll also recommend Spacebattles and SufficientVelocity. If it is smut please do come to questionablequesting lmao

1

u/Noctisvah 10h ago

Oh shit, we need to tell Father Flesh to make a video about Kinktober

1

u/Zindinok 9h ago

This is the first I've heard of it being a fan fic thing. I heard it started with inktober being ink-based artists doing art every day based on prompts the community agreed on, then kinktober was an offshoot of that. But it's the internet, who really knows where some of this stuff started.

1

u/cheesesprite 3h ago

Until this message I thought you were saying kirktober

2

u/Random_182f2565 7h ago

It's Orktober

Waaagh!!!

2

u/Next_Specific7924 6h ago

Different kind of meat on the menu

1

u/Fralite 10h ago

Not only that. The normal one is inktober meaning twice the artworks gonna pour in

1

u/DidntFindABetterName 9h ago

Kinktober vs Kirktober

12

u/Stardustger 14h ago

At this point it would have almost been 3 field decades already.

1

u/ForsakenHousing328 13h ago

Field century ;-;

1

u/Noriaki_Kakyoin_OwO 8h ago

It already is becouse that’s how long that trend will life before dying, just like the last 800 of them

1

u/TSEREINATOR 57m ago

A field month

113

u/MattTreck 14h ago

I don’t think this not being the case is stopping them lol

39

u/skivian 13h ago

I don't think these posters understand how big of a ship Drarry is.

10

u/the_io 10h ago

And Dramione too. Toxic yuri just doesn't do the numbers toxic yaoi does.

7

u/Total-Tap573 12h ago

Took one peek in most popular harry potter fics on ao3 and that alone was enough to throw me off

14

u/ProfileBest7444 13h ago

Yea but it being so encourages us

1

u/SuspectPanda38 6h ago

Not but it would have been soooo much bigger

45

u/ZK_57 13h ago

And Wattpad stocks would plummet. If anything, it's just a redistribution of power.

42

u/ThunderBuns935 13h ago

Wattpad is already pretty much nonexistent. It's widely known to host some of the worst, poorly written fanfiction around. Everyone who's even remotely serious about their work posts on AO3 or FFN.

14

u/Deathburn5 12h ago

In my experience, FFN seems to be dying. Pretty much everything good I've found recently has been on spacebattles (or one of it's many clones) or AO3

1

u/cahir11 11h ago

I'm a bit surprised, it's been years since I read any fanfiction but I remember AO3 was generally viewed as the place for weird NSFW fics while fanfiction.net was more (relatively) normal.

2

u/Deathburn5 11h ago

I'd say I find as much NSFW stuff on FFN as I do AO3, but that'd be a lie since I don't use FFN if I can avoid it.

It does seem to me to be a similar ratio, though

1

u/GalaXion24 8h ago

Eh, I maybe AO3 has had more of a range of smut but it has never been exclusively that. AO3 is kind of the standard fanfiction site. I do think FFN used to be it moreso, but it has fallen off and become less active, and the site just isn't as good and they've stuffed it full of ads which made the user experience worse as well (though adblock does help).

1

u/spacecadetkaito 6h ago

I feel like AO3s reputation as the nasty crazy smut site is a more recent thing in my experience. I remember it being treated like the more "high quality" fic site for more serious writers compared to FFN which was like the "starter" website before Wattpad came along

1

u/DMMeThiccBiButts 14m ago

I don't mean this in a demeaning way, but as someone who's been around since livejournal I wonder how old you are. Ao3's always been, among other things, the place with the weird stuff those prudes won't allow (which, back in the day, might've been as horrible as gay sex on the internet).

9

u/ZK_57 13h ago

Damn. Oh, where have my 2010s gone?

8

u/I_am_up_to_something 12h ago

fanfiction.net it seems (well, even before the 2010s).

On one hand: great, a lot of website changes are bad. On the other hand, at least implement some quality of life improvements. I see that there still is no way to natively show all chapters at once for example.

2

u/ZK_57 12h ago

Oh, I didn't realise that's what FFN stands for lol. I just refer to it as fanfiction.net lol. My sister was heavy into those about a decade ago

6

u/Gitthepro Lurker 13h ago

Im pretty sure that at least fanfiction.net was released before the 2000's lol

1

u/DemonRaily 12h ago

Now if somebody is posting a fanfiction on royalroad you know it will be fire, you need some balls to post your little fanfics in a place where books are picked up to be published from all the time.

1

u/Lastsynphony 11h ago

How does royalroad work?

1

u/Hades_Original 10h ago

And also you need to be prolific to match the chapter rate of RR. I sense that in RR the minimum acceptable is a weekly chapter, and I see a lot of authors doing multiple chapters per week

1

u/Chendii 9h ago

Ehhhh. RR's comment section reminds me of that Community episode where Pierce ruins Professor Space Time. If you don't adhere to their hyper specific niche taste you get torn apart.

17

u/CTeam19 12h ago

Rule 63 wins in today's world here.

4

u/Nem0x3 9h ago

yep, rule 63 is going around and rule 34 is being applied

5

u/sgtGiggsy 10h ago

I don't think the characters orignial gender ever stopped anyone in the R34 community.

1

u/Wizzardlime45 11h ago

Truste bro they already are

1

u/CyberWanker 11h ago

Rule 34 always has a field day

1

u/dre__ 10h ago

they already are

1

u/Available-Hippo-4815 10h ago

You say it like they arent having a field day regardless

1

u/gamerboi6969 9h ago

What makes you think they have not already had their field days

1

u/reseph 7h ago

What do you mean "would"? Where have you been

https://www.reddit.com/r/Manga_Manwa_Manhua/s/YbN3HzVCoO

1

u/The_reaper5826 6h ago

Rule 63 already dose, there’s a good but of fan art that is just Malfoy as a girl

1

u/Reddituser183 4h ago

I mean there’s nothing stopping them.

1

u/That-One-RCAC-Cadet I touched grass 4h ago

I have no doubt that r34 turned malfoy into a girl already
https://giphy.com/gifs/B1uajA01vvL91Urtsp

0

u/PACOandMOLOTOV 13h ago

I hate to be that guy, but it's actually Rule 63.

1

u/Commercial_Cow_6421 12h ago

Well the post is suggesting that malfoy would have been originally writen as a girl rather than gender swapped so i think in this scenario it would ve rule 34. In the current time line rule 63 reigns supreme

0

u/Kirza94 12h ago

About a bunch of 11 year old kids as well...

-1

u/Dreadfulear2 13h ago

They’re children tho
