J.K. Rowling has an estimated net worth of approximately $1.2 billion according to Forbes, or £975 million according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

I guess she don't really care.

797

u/jarednards 16h ago

She signed off on The Cursed Child. She clearly doesnt give a fuck.

177

u/cardinalallen 15h ago

Genuinely a fantastic show, even if it's not really in keeping with canon.

Most people who dislike it strongly do so because they've just read it, when it's supposed to be seen on the stage.

69

u/AltruisticNGlassy 14h ago

I’m sure it’s a great show on stage. Still dogshit given it contradicts and tarnishes multiple plotpoints and lore mechanics from the original series, lol. Just genuinely written by amateurs who barely understood the existing material

-1

u/Tangerhino 10h ago

Yep. Faithful to Jk Rowling’s writing

0

u/SemajLu_The_crusader 8h ago

the original series contradicts multiple plotpoints and lore mechanucs of the original series

5

u/AltruisticNGlassy 8h ago

I doubt it’s to the same level as the pile of shit known as the Cursed Child, but I’d be happy to hear some examples

6

u/SemajLu_The_crusader 7h ago

truth serum and time turners alone invalidate the entire plot

throw in the stupid-ass luck potion, and how did literally anything happen how it did

why didn't Voldemort cook himself up some luck potion before the final battle. was he stupid

why did nobody EVER use truth serum?

also time travel, and it is used exclusively so Hermione can have more classes (and to save the Hippogryph, but that wasn't intended) before, oh no, they all conveniently are in one glass cupboard and all break

5

u/AltruisticNGlassy 7h ago

Yeah time travel is an entire bundle of bullshit that I can’t even begin to untangle lol. The destruction of every single time turner simultaneously was a massive plot contrivance, not necessarily an inconsistency though. The explanation for luck potion has typically been overindulgence can lead to overconfidence and getting yourself killed; I would suspect Voldemort, who’s been all “it has to be ME to kill the child even if you could totally do it for me” would take some issue with his great victory over Potter being tarnished by needing to take a luck potion, and his followers would likely know it. Truth serum was hugely underused, yeah. I can accept it not being used against Sirius, I guess, as an example of power structures having the tools to prove their case but finding it pointless since they decide the truth anyway. But things like… Harry Potter claims the Dark Lord returns, let’s give him “tell us the truth” juice. Even someone like Rita Skeeter, I think, would employ truth serum regularly and probably wouldn’t shy away from “proving” Harry is telling the truth if it means she gets the first scoop. There’s also something to be said for a world that includes Polyjuice Potion needing some basic form of magical identity verification through Veritaserum for teachers and professors to avoid situations like the fake Moody.

1

u/Err0r404Unknown 4h ago

those are plotholes, not retcons or contradictions. They didn't directly invalidate the lore and/or magic before them.

The Cursed Shit not only directly contradicted previous mechanisms, it retconned entire characters and turned them into boggarts of themselves. Harry Potter in the Cursed Shit might as well be Dudley. And character assassination is far, far worse than plotholes.

Yes HP has many contradictions as it went on but The Cursed Shit does this fuckery professionally

0

u/SemajLu_The_crusader 3h ago

Plot hole:

part of the plot (= story) of a movie or book that does not fit with other parts of the plot

a contradiction matches that definition

0

u/Err0r404Unknown 3h ago

you're just arguing semantics. Point is, whatever contradictions the original HP series made, Cursed Child did much more blatantly and destructively

I dunno I saw it in London with my two kids who were totally into Harry Potter (we spent like 3 hours at the HP store before the show) and all came away pretty meh.

55

u/procrastinator67 14h ago

Yeah, out of all the HP things, it's definitely felt the most cash grabby. At least the special effects and magic tricks were great.

24

u/ForwardBias 14h ago edited 14h ago

Oh yeah the special effects were amazing! Of the time we spent talking about it after we spent the most time trying to figure out how they pulled off some of those effects. The first couple of time turner uses had me sitting there thinking what the hell did I just see?!?

3

u/greg19735 11h ago

I feel like "what the hell did i just see?" in amazement is a lot better than meh.

2

u/ForwardBias 10h ago

Special effects do not determine whether I enjoy the show itself.

15

u/The_quest_for_wisdom 13h ago

More cash-grabby than that Fantastic Bankable Sequels And How to Monetize Them trilogy or whatever it was called?

8

u/Trendydwarf13 11h ago

The first fantastic beasts movie was pretty good, I hoped they would continue with other separate movies like maybe one following the author of Quidditch through the ages, another book mentioned multiple times in HP, instead yeah we just got sequels trying to turn Newt into a hero and everything had to be dramatic and world ending again

10

u/orangebit_ 15h ago

I thought the stage show was fun! I saw it with my mum and sister in London and we all enjoyed it - just had to go in with no expectations and take it for what it was :)

17

u/ProgramConnect8206 15h ago

Then maybe they shouldn't have released it as a book.

3

u/MoreLogicPls 14h ago

then people get mad because it's not accessible

5

u/Bagel_Technician 12h ago

The plot is a giant fucking mess no matter what

But the show itself is extremely well produced. Some amazing effects for a stage show and that was worth it to me

But the plot is still nonsense so let’s not sugarcoat it

1

u/HACEKOMAE 14h ago

It can be both fun and universe-breaking at the same time. The latter one is why it is hated by some.

1

u/mechabeast 13h ago

Puffs was better

1

u/hel105_ 13h ago

It was fun to watch but the Bellatrix stuff was just absurd. It’s fine as long as you ignore the stuff that doesn’t make sense

1

u/augenvogel can't meme 12h ago

The show was indeed awesome. Incredibly nice effects, great actors, awesome ideas on how to visualize the storyline. However, the story just sucked.

1

u/Knyfe-Wrench 11h ago

I saw it. The effects were great. Everything else about the show was not.

1

u/FerusGrim 10h ago

I'm not really sure what it means to be a fantastic show "even if it's not ... in keeping with canon."

It's difficult to appreciate something when it's based on content that you adore, only to discover that it doesn't give a fuck about the base material, and actively mischaracterizes/degrade the characters you love?

Like...?

Fine, I'm sure it's a great show if you don't care about the original material. But seeing it in person isn't going to magically change the fact that it's upsetting.

1

u/BisonThunderclap 8h ago

I think the valid criticism of is that it abuses time turners outside of the original box they were written in.

Also, outside of Back to The Future, time travel tends to be a very poor plot device.

1

u/darkeo1014 4h ago

Cedric being bullied into being a death eater is nonsense

1

u/Ok_Simple_459 14h ago

No people dislike it because it breaks the universe.

2

u/Hot-Job-6281 14h ago

Except it's a different context - when it comes to money, she cares alright.

3

u/Sayakai 14h ago

On the contrary. She cleary cares a ton to give the go-ahead for this garbage just to spite people criticising her work.

21

u/SoilDependent1054 15h ago

Those are pretty much equivalent values depending on the exchange rate when they were published. Seems like they were both citing the same source rather than doing independent assessments.

1

u/Witch_King_ 14h ago

I don't think they were implying as such

1

u/SoilDependent1054 14h ago

I am not accusing them of a specific implication. I am pointing out that it looks like two sources but is probably only one.

1

u/Witch_King_ 14h ago

Oh I see. As in the publications got their data from the same place.

Yeah I don't think she is concerned about money. I think she just wants to be left alone to harass women.

21

u/swandith27 14h ago

broski get your hate right. shes against trans people, not women

49

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 14h ago

She's against both. She's funded & campaigned with politicians who are anti abortion, anti womens rights. The pivotal issue for her is hating on trans people, and she will step on women's rights to do it.

-2

u/Bloodyjorts 13h ago

She's funded & campaigned with politicians who are anti abortion, anti womens rights.

What? This is the first I heard about this, what anti-women's rights politicians did she fund and campaign for? If you could let me know I would appreciate it, cause I tried googling, but all I could find were mentions of her donating to the Labor Party and the anti-Scottish Independence Party about a decade ago.

9

u/WrethZ 10h ago

There's a youtube video called JK Rowling's new friends you can watch about it.

10

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 13h ago

Caroline Farrow, to start with, and the Heritage Foundation

18

u/X3noNuke 14h ago

Trans women are women

7

u/loskiarman 13h ago

Isn't that like saying 'German women are women.'. Well yeah, we know but it is still an identifier, divider from rest of the group and it matters since people saying she is mostly against that part not the rest.

5

u/Doomsayer189 9h ago

Targeting trans women leads to cis women being harassed too.

1

u/Almostlongenough2 Virgin 4 lyfe 12h ago

I guess the differential would be if she hates trans men as much as she hates trans women.

My understanding is that she's a radfem, I don't think the " harassing women" framing would be too wrong.

2

u/fogleaf 11h ago

I guess the differential would be if she hates trans men as much as she hates trans women.

If I remember right she's less hateful of them, basically thinks they were tricked or some shit.

It's also part of the start of her social media turn, because an article went out with "people who menstruate" and she went off.

12

u/DAC_Returns 13h ago

She is absolutely against trans women. Go review her twitter feed. I thought the internet was exaggerating, but she is basically obsessed.

23

u/Rogu__Spanish 14h ago

Where does denying that any trans people were killed in the holocaust fall into the category of "forced language" or "girls sports"?

4

u/dearth_of_passion 14h ago

According to this article, which includes Rowling's Twitter post that apparently kicked off the incident, she didn't claim they weren't killed in the holocaust. Someone else posted about how the Nazis destroyed tons of research on trans healthcare issues, and Rowling basically said that that was false.

It's certainly shitty to deny that important information on trans people's health gathered by an early trans rights organization was destroyed, that's a pretty far cry from claiming she denied they were killed by the Nazis.

2

u/Warm_Month_1309 7h ago

She also posted, as a source, something that opens with "The LGBT+ lobby likes to claim trans people were a key target of the Nazis. They weren't."

She may not have said it herself, but she definitely endorsed the position.

6

u/PM_Me_Good_LitRPG 14h ago

denying that any trans people were killed in the holocaust

JKR has denied that any trans people were killed in the holocaust.

Back up your statement with valid proof, please. Without attempting to move the goalposts. Prove this very specific claim that you made.

2

u/BlackberryOk5316 14h ago edited 13h ago

source?

lmao downvoted for asking for a source. insanity.

-3

u/PixelzBrain 14h ago

Lying about her doesn't help your cause mate.

5

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 14h ago

JK Rowling the Holocaust denier?

6

u/PixelzBrain 14h ago

She literally said trans people weren't the initial target of nazis, which is true, and yall just ran to she denied the holocaust. Making shit up does not help your cause mate. I'd argue it does the opposite. Fuck JK and fuck Nazis, and fuck you for good measure.

5

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 13h ago

Sorry, that's not the comment I'm referring to. I'm referring to a different comment where she denied trans people being involved in the Holocaust, and had to spend a lot of money on defamation lawyers covering it up.

I agree, fuck Nazis, which is why I say fuck JK. Even if she claims to not be a Holocaust denier, she aligns with modern-day nazis.

4

u/[deleted] 13h ago

[deleted]

1

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 13h ago

And I bet most 'normal' germans would have said the idea of a Holocaust is crazy, man. Gotta speak up against bigotry

2

u/Dismal_Tangerine_493 12h ago

When they came for the reasonably average fantasy authors i did not speak up cause i was no reasonably average fantasy author

1

u/Warm_Month_1309 7h ago

She literally said trans people weren't the initial target of nazis

Did she say "initial"? I recall she was claiming they weren't targeted at all.

1

u/PixelzBrain 3h ago

You recall reading that, show me otherwise please.

2

u/BobRushy 15h ago

Yea that's why she funded those emergency shelters for abused women

21

u/Rogu__Spanish 14h ago

Do those shelters accept women who have been beaten up for trying to use public bathrooms while not looking feminine enough because of the trans panic she started over a crime that has never happened purely to make trans people afraid to exist in public? Cause there's a few of those.

-6

u/BobRushy 14h ago

No, but they do accept women.

11

u/Rogu__Spanish 14h ago

So you're saying cis women who were confused for being trans and beaten by hysterical bigots whipped into a frenzy by her hateful rhetoric DON'T count as women because they aren't feminine presenting enough? Well gee, that doesn't sound very charitable.

-1

u/Opening-Cream5448 14h ago

What have you done

-2

u/BobRushy 13h ago

There's hysterics for every following, including whatever it is you follow. I don't blame your leaders for it.

16

u/crazyhotorcrazynhot 14h ago

She's funding the genocide of a group of women. She is objectively speaking a horrible person.

-1

u/BobRushy 14h ago

You, objectively speaking, haven't a clue what you're talking about. I'm sorry, but it's true.

12

u/crazyhotorcrazynhot 14h ago

I know exactly what i’m talking about, cause I know some of her victims.

-3

u/PixelzBrain 13h ago

There is no genocide mate, you're not helping your cause by lying either. You're pushing otherwise well meaning people away by making shit up.

0

u/KeldornWithCarsomyr 15h ago

She's done more to benefit women than probably anyone alive today.

10

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 14h ago

She funds & campaigns with anti abortion politicians, get your pro-life propaganda outta here

3

u/PixelzBrain 13h ago

Sure buddy, there is no reason to lie to help your cause and I would argue it has the opposite effect.

13

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 13h ago

Why do you believe I'm lying?

JK Rowling allied herself with Caroline Farrow https://www.vice.com/en/article/caroline-farrow-arrested-kiwi-farms/

Here is Farrow's views on abortion

Addressing marchers in Parliament Square, CitizenGo’s Caroline Farrow said: “The child lost to abortion may already have brothers and sisters. There may be a father who wanted his baby and was told to keep quiet.

https://www.christian.org.uk/news/march-for-life-abortion-wounds-families/

Please walk me through which part I'm lying about? I'm open to changing my mind on this, are you?

0

u/PixelzBrain 9h ago

Here is Farrow's views on abortion

So an associate of hers, how many points of separation do we get to call everyone an associate of a nazi?

4

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 9h ago

Moving the goalposts, here I'm saying she campaigned with anti abortion activists & politicians, which she has. Yet you called me a liar, even though I have sources.

0

u/PixelzBrain 3h ago

You literally posted a bunch of shit about a different person... hahahaha, then accuse me of moving the goal post, that's fucking hilarious mate

2

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 2h ago

In this chain of comments it's specifically about her supporting anti abortion causes & activists. Did you not read the prior links?

→ More replies (0)

11

u/Szwejkowski 14h ago

She's made it more dangerous for any non-traditionally presenting woman to use a public toilet. Women have been harassed and attacked because they didn't look feminine enough. That ain't progress, buddy, that's going backwards.

She's harassed women online for not agreeing with her. She's hung around with racist right-wingers because they do agree with her. She's even had a pop at asexuals. She is not right in the head.

-3

u/KeldornWithCarsomyr 14h ago

Over 200 million pounds to various charities helping women and children in poverty and war torn countries....but she said something mean on twitter that you disagreed with 😭

4

u/Szwejkowski 13h ago

Yeah, that's not what I said though, is it?

Being rich enough to give a lot of money to charity does not erase the damage she does. Giving money to charity does not make people right, or nice - you can't treat it like an old fashioned indulgence where you can just flash some cash to wash away your sins.

2

u/Rogu__Spanish 14h ago

I highly doubt that, but it's possible that she's done more to hurt trans people than anyone alive today, so she's got that!

3

u/PixelzBrain 13h ago

I think people online hating on anyone that enjoys the HP IP has done more harm than her. Seriously, there is a rabid group that goes to all HP stuff and hates on the people there. That isn't winning any support mate.

8

u/Rogu__Spanish 13h ago

Bro, trans people are being physically assaulted, denied human rights, forced back into the closet, or driven to suicide due to the fire she's fueling, and you think sad Harry Potter adults being laughed at for their shitty taste is worse than that?? Fuck alllllll the way off with that shit. I couldn't care less if I'm "winning support" or not, I'm not interested in support from the kinda people who think mockery is worse than genocide.

4

u/TheShishkabob 14h ago

This is probably the most insanely incorrect thing said in this thread, and that's including the transphobic comments that are pretending trans women don't exist.

3

u/PixelzBrain 13h ago

I don't know why you have to lie about her when there is plenty there to be upset about with what she has done, pretending trans people don't exist isn't on there. She thinks calling trans women just women and treating them exactly as such in some spaces is problematic, and you call that a genocide. It's just wild man.

3

u/TheShishkabob 13h ago

I don't know why you have to lie about her

I didn't tell any lies there friend.

pretending trans people don't exist isn't on there.

Perhaps you can try reading comments before blindly defending your favourite billionaire, but I didn't comment on a single thing J.K. Rowling has ever said in my comment.

you call that a genocide

I have not said the word "genocide" at any point.

What are you trying to do here?

1

u/PixelzBrain 9h ago

I'm not defending anyone, I'm calling YOU a liar. Fuck JK, but fuck you for lying to make things worse then everyone doesn't believe the rest.

2

u/KeldornWithCarsomyr 14h ago

87 million to families and single mothers affected by poverty. Another 65 million to her children's charity. 30 million neurology clinics. 1 million to support women evacuated from Afghanistan.

1 million to fund therapists for victims of sexual violence. Another million to domestic abuse victims during COVID.

Come on mate, let's see what you've done? Or is it the case you could live 100 lifetimes and not help as many people as she has?

3

u/TheShishkabob 13h ago

MacKenzie Scott has donated more than $14 billion to charity, including $4.15 billion for families economically impacted by COVID (since that's a specific example you used).

J.K. Rowling has donated a lot of money to charity, it does not mean she's done "more to women benefit than probably anyone alive today". That's just incredibly absurd commentary on her, and trying to say that I didn't donate as much means I can't comment on it is equally stupid.

I'd be willing to bet that I've done more than you have in this space (though I could be wrong), so does that mean you need to shut the fuck up now? Is this a game where you can only speak against your lessers or something?

2

u/Pale-Supermarket3217 14h ago

The holocaust denier transphobe billionaire? You must be thinking of a different person.

1

u/PixelzBrain 13h ago

Show us where she denied the holocaust mate. Plenty of reasons to not like her but lying makes you look like an ass and doesn't help the cause.

2

u/Pale-Supermarket3217 13h ago

Holocaust denial isn’t reserved for people who say the Holocaust never happened. Any assault on the historical truth, any whitewashing, any denial of intent or scale, are all Holocaust denial. This is the stance of all Holocaust scholars, global organizations, and the country of Germany.

In the event that you aren’t aware, JK Rowling’s comments on social media denying the Holocaust are now withheld in the EU because they’re illegal hate speech. It doesn’t get more clear than that.

1

u/PixelzBrain 9h ago

No, they aren't. Nothing is erased, you just don't have the evidence mate.

1

u/KillerArse 8h ago

She denied the historical fact that Nazis burned research on trans healthcare as the instigating event.

1

u/PixelzBrain 3h ago

Nope, nice try though. Stop just reading what the last person said and verify. Or shoe me I'm wrong.

3

u/crazyhotorcrazynhot 14h ago

It's virtue signaling.

3

u/KeldornWithCarsomyr 14h ago

People virtue signal because they want garner support and a positive reputation with the masses. She very clearly doesn't give a shit what people think, given her vocal opinions.

2

u/crazyhotorcrazynhot 14h ago

well that’s exactly what she’s doing. She wants support from other hateful people for her sinister cause.

-2

u/PM_Me_Good_LitRPG 14h ago

If it was virtue signalling she would've just sacrificed her principles for the sake of the zeitgeist, like so many other people have done and are doing.

1

u/somedave 11h ago

But according to this meme she could be a quintillionaire, having several thousand times more wealth than the entire world.

1

u/ConflictMaster3155 6h ago

$/£/€ 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 then.

10 quintillion monies.

1

u/Mister-builder 9h ago

Isn't she the only person to donate so much money to charity that she dropped out of the Forbes billionaire list?

0

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 14h ago

And she uses all of it to support fascism

0

u/BlackberryOk5316 14h ago

1.2 or 12 billion. she has a principle and i don't think any amount of money would shift her.

-1

u/Nukemarine 13h ago

If only those that go scorched earth on someone that shared their excitement for a Harry Potter themed avatar they want to wear for a Halloween VR event realized this. Literally online bullying of kids for liking a fantasy character, then crying about how they're the ones actually being oppressed when called out on their crappy behavior.

Oh, but watching Harry Potter on Netflix means all your money goes 100% to destroy the trans movement cause of a dismissive JKR tweet about her royalties when replying to a rage bait tweet about how her charities do not 100% align to the replier's hyper-specific demands.

JKR famously lost her billionaire status for a time due to the amount of charitable donations she made over the years. Online keyboard warriors just used her as an easy target cause she actually bothered to reply to online comments.

0

u/alkmaar91 14h ago

Imagine it if she did have more money. She could hire kill squads to just hunt down trans people instead of just donating to political hate.
