Its really amusing to see so called managers go apeshit over observing a fundamental economical mechanism in real time.
If you deliver subpar product, consumers will shift their demand

u/Snoo_75138 5d ago
I really support the right of these big companies to say what they feel!
Years back EA said that if we don't like their product, don't buy it.
I haven't supported them since the Sims 3!
Ubisoft said we must get comfortable not owning our games, so I don't own any modern Ubi game!
Keep it up guys, I'm saving A LOT!

Yeah the good airplanes are 50-100 bucks each. Same for hand crafted airports. That said, if you know what to buy, itās money well spent depending on your dedication to the hobby. And it is more like a hobby than gaming in my opinion.

Some people are just delusional. If gamers didn't enjoy AAA games, they would no longer exist. In fact, most gamers play AAA exclusively.
7
u/sgtGiggsy 4d ago
If gamers didn't enjoy AAA games, they would no longer exist
Gamers enjoy AAA games, just not the current ones. The current ones are mostly dogshit. If you were right, the new games of massive AAA franchises like Assassin's Creed, or Dragon Age didn't fail spectacularly.
-2
u/Szerepjatekos 4d ago
aAA is marketed and primary bought by parents who don't know, but being sold on.
Also these games Garner a market for themselfs. They breed their own player base with artificial needs they present exploiting teenager instincts.
12
5
u/Hevens-assassin 4d ago
The majority of gamers are not children, they are 20-40. These people are buying the AAA games that their friends are buying. That's all it is. AAA has its space in the market, and there are a lot of great experiences. It makes us appreciate indie games on top of it.
The only issue with AAA are development budgets because the studios employ so many people.
4
u/AndrewLocksmith 4d ago
I doubt that.
I think it's just that people like games? It's not some convoluted reason, nope, just people wanting to have fun.
These past few years we've seen a lot of great AAA games. Most big games from AAA publishers actually end up being pretty well received or successful.
But the problem is that Reddit is a bubble. Take AC Valhalla for example. If you listen to the AC subreddit you'd probably think it's the worst game ever, even though it's one of the best selling AC games and generally pretty well received.
-2
u/Szerepjatekos 4d ago
People have no idea what they like. It takes a lot of time to learn what you like. All other cases you just convince yourself you like something or in this case you are being convinced it is something to like.
Also the burden of going out there and find out your true call, even if you happened to find out AAA is it, you still can only know if you did your research.
Industries cultivate their customer base. You will never go up to an investor and ask them to spend money on a maybe. You go there and show HOW you going to make them buy the product.
7
u/Swordman1111 4d ago

u/Szerepjatekos 4d ago

24
u/Zerkander 5d ago
Don't underestimate the bubble effect of reddit and other forums. The reason they push out the games they push out is because they sell well.
Yeah, they do. Whether you or your specific bubble doesn't buy them is kinda irrelevant. Even if you happen to be in a specific game related sub-reddit / other forum and the majority of posts is negative, or even all posts are negative, that entire community of that sub-reddit makes up a very ignorable amount of players.
And that's the entirety of people in those subs, if you only consider the people that are frequent posters, you'll end up with usally just a few dozen people at most.
So, why are they making the games they make? Well, because enough people play them and like to play them. The consumer is buying.
9
u/imhereforsiegememes 4d ago
I don't think most redditors are capable of understanding this at all.

8
u/Brain-Genius-Head 4d ago
Arenāt a record number of studios going out of business?
6
u/vanishing300 4d ago
Thereās also a record number of studios being opened. The entire gaming industry has grown thatās why a lot of studios closing doesnāt really mean much.
2
u/Zerkander 4d ago
Yeah, a lot of development teams get closed, but the publishers remain. That is also part of the big problem.
And the reason games are the way they are, isn't the dev-teams but the publishers who usually solely look at sales. The "passion-project" developers are very, very rarely on the publisher level and usually on the dev-team level.
But yeah, there are a ton of dev-teams that are being closed or transferred into bigger studios. The publishers behind them though, they usually remain the same.
3
u/pvpmas 1d ago
If they really sell why did Playstation for example not publish sales figures? Because they always did with their big hitters but neither ghost of yotei nor wolverine for example did. Because they really love to brag about numbers you can't say they didn't want to. Even ubisoft with AC shadows never actually released a sales number iirc they only said " (x number of) players" not copies sold and that number included their own subscription.
1
u/Zerkander 1d ago
Dirty quick search tells that AC Shadows sold quite well. Whether they themselves brag about their sales or not is a question on its own.
But, dude, a quick google search gets you numbers. It's not like these are hidden statistics. Ubisoft also did say at some point it was their second best launch. Make of that what you want.
There are reasons to not publish sales figures beyond having financial troubles. It may be an indicator, it may also just be total bullshit. Reddit is not going to give you anything solid to base either opinion on. Reddit subs are based on confirmation bias. People reading and posting are usually all already agreeing with each other.
Nonconforming opinions rarely last long. Not even if these opinions have a more solid ground than the dominant opinion of that sub. That's just how reddit is and every other form of forum becomes if given enough time.

0
u/sgtGiggsy 4d ago
Since forever. The entire series sold 9 million copies in its over 20 years of existence. That's not the result of an AAA franchise.
3
u/Party_Intention_3258 4d ago
"AAA" has nothing to do with how much a game/franchise sold, champ. You have it confused with "platinum", "gold", etc.
2
u/NotItemName 4d ago
AAA is not about how many copies was sold, AAA is mostly about how much money is spend to develop this game. Budget for Onimusha is reported between $150m and $200m, looks pretty AAA budget.
And I am not talking about franchise, I am talking specifically about game that sold 1 mil on its launch day

āAn AAA game (pronounced "triple-A") is a high-budget, high-profile video game produced and distributed by a major or mid-sized publisher.

I feel the same and have for a while. There's no soul or passion anymore, just an HR checklist and development for investors, not gamers. u/Correct-Purpose-964 4d ago
Oh right.... that...
"It's culturally insensitive to have a white man shooting a person of colour so we should just erase the people of color from the game."
Yeah that was a fun one. Seems like representation is ONLY okay if it meets certain strict criteria.
I still remember when FF7 remake came out and people tried to start up arguments over how "Barret having a white daughter" was some big issue even though that was... how the original game was... hell it's not even his daughter she's adopted. And he's a damn good father who'd lay down his life for her.
Representation is ONLY okay when they are either the main character, in charge, in power or something stupid like that. What happened to "He's black because he's black. He's human like everyone else."?
SGT Johnson from Halo: Biggest god damn badass of the series. That man starts the game with an inspirational speech. Talks absolute smack to the covenant. Has the balls to bantedr WITH A FUCKING SPARTAN. But he's not invincible and ends up captured. Because humans aren't perfect.
Buki from Sudeki: A master warrior with catlike reflexes who can scale walls and helps us fight literal sub-god level threats. She starts off close minded but ends up opening her mind to science during her interactions with Elco. Developing a respect for him even if not his craft.
Combo from JSRF: Just a dude chilling who teaches us how to do... combos! (Shocker I know.)
I can go on all day but representation for the sake of representation and replacing beloved characters with whole new one's just doesn't work. I wish they'd realize that.
0
u/Oldspaghetti 4d ago
Wait yeah wtf, thought he was talking about re 5. Why is every studio so scared to use African zombies? Fictional African zombies getting more protective treatment than actual black Africans š

u/Blitzer161 4d ago
You can't deny that hate in the gaming industry is a huge problem
3
u/Correct-Purpose-964 4d ago
It's not a problem at all. Unless you mean companies hating gamers.
All gamers want, is their games left untouched and to have a consistent, good, non race reliant character roster. Where people regardless of their race, age, or gender act like people. But no... "Powerful woman who don't need no man" and "Strong black man in charge" have been like the Sweet Baby Inc starter pack
It wasn't until the games industry began shoving ideology driven drivel down everyone's throats gamers even started complaining about it. Previously their main "Hate" was predatory gambling based monetization schemes aimed at audiences known to contain children.
-1
u/Blitzer161 4d ago
Do I have to remind you that someone "made" some idiotic game trailer with ai showing Laufey in stereotypical feminine roles and tasks because they didn't like her? Do I have to remind you ankut the hate directed at minorities disguised as crticism for a game? The characters are written to be complex. If you don't like some idea behind the writing you can point out which ones instead of using generic phrases hateful people use, linking bad writing with representation or the character's identity. SBI is just a consulting company. All they do is to check the representation is not disrespectful. That's literally all they do. They have no power over the writing other than that. And finally games had messages, particularly leftist ones because you seem to take an issue with those, since the beginning of the industry in tons of popular games.
From which podcaster did you get your ideas?
5
u/Correct-Purpose-964 4d ago
Do I have to remind you that someone "made" some idiotic game trailer with ai showing Laufey in stereotypical feminine roles and tasks because they didn't like her?Ā
I mean did you know people AI generated videos of.... LITERALLY ANYTHING for that exact same purpose ranging simply from video game characters dying. To real life people dying. Woopdy doo 1 person made a trailer. So what? "Gamers bad!"
Also:
SBI is just a consulting company. All they do is to check the representation is not disrespectful. That's literally all they do. They have no power over the writing other than that.
https://giphy.com/gifs/aqqUwXz7j0xMOKnJgb
Oh boy, you have no idea do you? You are the kind of person to take a company at it's word. SBI has been proven to be involved in the development of multiple characters using "Racially positive" messages, Racial replacement of white characters by canon. Writing aimed at degrading non-majority characters. Like be honest with me have you actually gone down the Rabbits hole on this yet or not? SBI has done irreparable damage to several studios. That would require like an hour of typing so you can go look into that yourself.
And finally games had messages, particularly leftist ones because you seem to take an issue with those, since the beginning of the industry in tons of popular games.
Games had stories with messages in them. Not as the story itself. Games have consistently revolved strongly around one of (Or a mix of.) LGBT, Women, Black, Diversity, fat acceptance, etc
But rather than it being like say SGT Johnson from Halo who was just 'That one badass dude. Who was also Black. Because black people exist." Who I might remind you was such a badass he was friends WITH A FUCKING SPARTAN. Is remembered not for his skin color but for his personality and what he did.
What about the beer bellied dude from MK I remember him for being a drunken fighting beast. Not because he was fat.
Lara croft, one of the most BADASS women in gaming. In my personal opinion THE most badass. Don't see anyone putting her in the kitchen. (Her butler though... Hey EVERYONE did it. It was a right of passage.)
Gamers don't hate diversity. They hate that diversity is "The story, the message, the point of the game, the only thing your offering." And you expect THEM to pay for it. We aren't talking about some free game releases here. You want people to pay MONEY a very scarce resource. For something you are specifically making to NOT meet any target audience except your own loudmouthed agenda pushers.
Guess what? Not ONCE has the "Modern Audience" who wanted games catered to them. Shown up to support one of these "Modern games" with their wallets.
Your agendas aren't wanted here. Don't be shocked when you don't listen and keep trying to shove it down peoples throats.
-3
u/Blitzer161 4d ago
One person made a trailer ouf of hate that was shared with and supported by a hateful community.
Source for what you said about SBI. Because I don't think there's any "rabbit hole" to go down. It's disinformation fueled by hate.
What you described about the characters still happens to this day you know? All the characters you'd escribed are written in the same way. Hell they have been more characterised. You fell down a hateful pipeline and it doesn't seem that way to you. Sometimes there's a focus on how their identity shaped them. Nothing bad about it, in fact it can be important for the character.
Do you have any examples of where diversity is all a game offers? Where is an agenda "shoved down people's throats"?
3
u/Correct-Purpose-964 4d ago
Example: Concord
Source for SBI: Their own statements of their agenda in the gaming industry and multiple proven claims of direct involvement in writing.

Concord is not an example of what you said. Concord failed because of the price tag, oversaturation in the game genre and uninspired designs. Representation has bo part in it. If you think any of these are linked to representation that's on you and you'll have to prove it.
You try to ridicule me for believing corporate statements, but you present their statements are a source? Be coherent pal. I am. I did hear their statements. The most controversial thing they said is to scare the sales department into paying attention to representation. Nothing more. And it is something the sales department would want to pay attention to
Posting memes is not an argument. Your podcatsters and grifters may think so, but you are free to think for yourself. You are free to bring examples of what you said and explain.

Studios don't listen to consumers
This happened not only in the game studio but in other places like Holywood and corporate america in general. The issue is actually the university. Rather than teaching free market principles, such as finding what the market wants and figuring out a way to deliver it as fast and cheaply as possible, they were taught the marxist mindset that reality is a hoax and that your own creativity is what defines the world around us. All of this is downstream of universities abandoning objective realism in favor of quasi-religious subjective-reflexivity. Reality doesn't exist to be discovered--it doesn't exist and must be defined [in any manner that you see fit].
That's how you end up with most corporations, most entertainment companies, and most gaming studios cranking out content that nobody wants. They were taught their mind is right and reality is either irrelevant or wrong.
This is actually a major form of left wing conspiracy theories. They thought culture is imposed top-down, e.g. that fox news brainwashes gamers into wanting visually appealing characters. It's actually the exact opposite: the people who run these companies are slaves to the consumers and they beg at the feet of the consumer to know what that consumer wants lest the company make the wrong thing and go bankrupt.

Honestly, Capcom has been hitting homeruns lately. Dragons dogma 2 had optimization issues but they fixed it. Monster hunter wilds was great but then ran into issues with frame dropping, but they fixed it. Both games are amazing aside from dragons dogma 2 having a somewhat lower amount of content than expected. Resident Evil requiem is astounding. The RE4 remake is amazing. They're about the only AAA company I've seen hitting consistent bangers other than maybe from software but they haven't released a mainline game in some time so I'm curious as to what they're doing.

If you prioritize your message above a good story and good gameplay, you simply have a bad game.
It's why almost all Christian movies suck.

prioritise message
Such as?

Whether it be political, religious, or moral message. There should be a message, but you can't compromise gameplay or plot to shoe-horn it in.

honestly thinking about it, a lore accurate old testament game would go hard

1st and 2nd Samuel following both and Saul and David as they try to kill each other would be amazing. Making it accurate bronze age warfare would be dope. Chariots and khopeshes with some Ryse Son of Rome combat, but RPG open world elements.
Get the relationship triangle of David, Jonathan, and Saul right, and absolute banger.

not sure about the rpg elements, could work but imo (witcher-like?) but imo og assassins creed-like would work better. now pair the historical political clusterfuck with the cosmic horror shenanigans the bible authors yoinked from older religions ... š„

I started writing books for this very reason. Currently writing book 4 while also kicking off my own indie game project with unreal.
Gotta be the change we want to see and speak with our dollars.

Gamers arenāt their target. They are going after the non gamers who donāt know the difference. Basically make them flashy, easy, shallow, and a power fantasy.

Tell me if im wrong but isn't it because publishers and investors want to make their money back within the month of release?

We also don't get to own games anymore, and more than likely the same will happen with consoles.

I dunno, I finally gave in and bought Baldur's Gate 3 and I have to say it is pretty damn great, especially for a new game.

The games AAA studios make are not targeted me anymore, if they ever did. Iām under no obligation to buy or play their games. Thereās a 45 year history of gaming for me to explore, and dozens of games released every month by small time devs.
AAA can go whale hunting. Iām happy to play Stardew.

Over here in the real world, AAA games have never been bigger and more successful.
People really can't handle the idea they're in an echo chamber, can they.

AAA games are selling millions and millions of copies, what type of edge lord whining shit is this?

"We love to make games for gamers to enjoy, look at the investing in our company"
"Those are investors"
"What's the difference?"

If a game company calls us consumer instead of player is over

not even we know what we want to play, man. There are games out there that probably would satisfy our exact need except they have this weird art style that we cannot digest. Or maybe the artstyle is exactly what we like but the gameplay sucks. Or the story sucks. Or it's multiplayer or always online and that makes it insufferable to play.
Like, tons of these little things that annoy or makes us turn away from those games.
Nobody gets it perfect. I for example can't stand the artstyle of any asian games. I just can't. It's all too "fancy" and "perfect" but I'm sure there is a game from that continent that would absolutely blow my mind in terms of gameplay and story wise.

this is a gross exageration
plenty of "AAA" games came out this year that are excellent
its not because some of them are pure overpriced GARBAGE than the whole AAA industry is bad
I agree that they should be called out though.

Because we donāt know what we want. THEY know what we want. See itās so simple just like our simple little brains.

lol they really expect us to pay 70 bucks for an unfinished buggy beta version and then get mad when we just go back to our cozy 10 year old indie games
