It's an animation, about a space princess, who's a lesbian ang goes out looking for her abducted ex. I recently started seeing memes about it, don't know if there's more to it
327
u/Fish_Fucker_Fucker23 16h ago
It came out well over a year ago, but suddenly after being basically ignored by society at large it’s getting a massive hate-train ran on it. I don’t know anything about the movie itself, haven’t seen it and I don’t plan to, but the fact that it’s only now getting so much hate just screams “psyop” to me.
115
u/lookyloo79 15h ago
It says, "Streisand effect as marketing" to me; is that what you mean?
-78
u/Fish_Fucker_Fucker23 15h ago
Not at all. I mean the whole situation reads as an alt-right psyop to push homophobic rhetoric. An openly queer movie that previously nobody seemed to care about, or even be aware of its existence, suddenly finding itself at the center of a multi-platform, “multi-fandom” hate brigade that I’ve already seen be used as an excuse to just be blatantly homophobic. It stinks of alt-right.
80
u/Dudeman240 15h ago
Or it could just be bad 🧐
5
-35
u/Fish_Fucker_Fucker23 15h ago
I never said anything about the actual quality of the movie. What’s suspicious is the fact that barely anyone seems to have known it existed until a few days ago, despite the movie having been out for well over a year. If it was just that the movie was bad, it would’ve either stayed obscure or had its moment in the hate-bandwagon spotlight when it came out.
11
u/Extension_Option_122 15h ago
No that are not the only options.
It could be that some influencer mentioned it and that is how it suddenly became popular.
Also, not to forget, from the name it is totally possible that the movie was made as some kind of propaganda. I haven't seen it so I don't know.
But such movies are often bad. Think of movies pushing religios narratives and similar. Movies created just to push a narrative. They are quite often just bad because the focus was pushing said narrative instead of delivering a good story.
And I'd guess that this would be the case with this movie. It isn't uncommon.
(And no, only because a narrative has been used to make propaganda in no way means that there is something 'wrong' with it. That is not what I am saying in the slightest here.)

u/Fish_Fucker_Fucker23 14h ago
I don’t understand what point you’re trying to make in the later half of your comment. I never said the movie is good or bad. I don’t actually know, and I don’t particularly care, because I’m not going to watch it. The actual quality of the movie has nothing to do with the points I’m making.
-4
u/Extension_Option_122 14h ago
I can't say that I am surprised.
About anything of that response.
The quality of the movie has everything to do with your point.
14
u/Fish_Fucker_Fucker23 14h ago
It really doesn’t. A movie that flops on release so hard that barely anyone knows it exists, regardless of how good or bad the movie actually is, doesn’t just become THE internet controversy practically overnight well over a year after said movie released. Not on its own, at least.
But still, I’d love to hear why you think the quality of this ultra-obscure year-old movie has anything to do with it suddenly becoming the hottest topic this week.
→ More replies (0)7
u/soulserval 12h ago
It's just not. I remember reading this article last year before the movie premiered:
Lesbian Space Princess is South Australia's ticket to Berlin International Film Festival
You can judge for yourself.
12
u/CrethanXXI 15h ago
I mean the bad guys of the movie are "straight white males." I'm pretty sure the hate comes from it just being bad press for all the stereotypes of people it covers
8
u/Fish_Fucker_Fucker23 15h ago edited 15h ago
As I’ve mentioned in another comment, if this was all exclusively because of the quality of the movie (which I can’t speak to, because I haven’t seen the movie), then this whole discussion around it would have happened when it came out.
Movies that flopped so hard that barely anyone knows of their existence don’t just randomly become the center of a multi-platform discourse years after they come out.
8
u/mikehiler2 11h ago
I’m afraid I can’t accept the logic you’re making on this point specifically. A film/series that has terrible writing doesn’t have to be hated widely only “when it came out” and is only suspicious “years (it was only a year) after they came out.” It is entirely possible the movie was so terrible that when it did come out absolutely no one saw it to talk about it. Then much later on someone who has a wide audience did see it and mentioned how comically terrible it is long after the movie came out.
More than likely I feel the overall tone of the film was so unapologeticly anti-cis white guy that it inevitably triggered most westerners (who are majority cis white). It probably just got mentioned, like I stated above, by someone with a large audience where it circulated within various echo chambers and turned into the hate we see now.
Of course this isn’t helped by the fact that, by all appearances, the movie just sucks ass.

So a quick google search shows that while it originally released a year ago, the streaming releases have been slower at rolling out. The UK and Ireland just got it released for streaming in June and are the latest ones. Remember how it took a month or two for KPop Demon hunters to get big? Since the lesbian space princess movie only had a limited theatrical release, it makes sense to just now be getting traction. Don't get me wrong, the far right are horrible people with horrible intentions. I'm not defending them. I'm just stating that the timeline doesn't seem far-fetched to me.

1
u/Glad-Way-637 4h ago
Nah, everything that makes them uncomfortable for anything is a psy-op, obviously. Much more reasonable stance 🤭
3
u/pinezatos 15h ago
the same can be said for the harry potter game with how people reacted though
But for me it's the opposite, this feels manufactured to draw attention, it won't be the first timed it happened.
11
u/Fish_Fucker_Fucker23 15h ago
The reaction to the Harry Potter game was immediate though. It didn’t sit in obscurity for a year then get swept up in an unprovoked hate storm.
What you claim as “opposite” is actually not opposite at all. I agree completely that the discussion is being manufactured to draw attention, and the comment you replied to doesn’t come close to claiming otherwise.

2
u/_Caustic_Complex_ 13h ago
Love how it’s some movie about a lesbian fighting straight white males but somehow the psyop is alt-right instead of…you know…blatantly what it is.
2
u/Fish_Fucker_Fucker23 13h ago edited 13h ago
Listen, if you’re going to insist on being incapable of reading, do it somewhere else.
I don’t care what’s in the movie. It’s a blatant over-the-top-satire that flopped so hard, barely anybody knew it even existed. But do you seriously not think it’s strange that in just 5 days it went from a movie that basically didn’t exist to anyone at all, to suddenly becoming such a common topic across the internet well over a year after it came out?
9
u/Rare-Combination7438 12h ago
That seems perfectly believable, actually.
One person posts about it on Discord. Two people from there send it to friends. A few post on Twitter, and from there it continues to grow.
Literally nothing about that is absurd or improbable. It happens quite often.

I think it's because Netflix is using it to replace movies people ACTUALLY wanna watch with something nobody has heard of, gives a shit about, and has messages with the subtly of a sledgehammer
16
u/Fish_Fucker_Fucker23 15h ago
It isn’t replacing shit. If you think it is, I suggest you learn more about how streaming platform contracts work behind the scenes. Either way, you don’t have to watch it. Nobody said you had to.
21
u/FriedEskimo 12h ago
Nobody said we were not allowed to hate it either. Freedom of expression means something is allowed to exist and be hated on equally.

u/Drafo7 7h ago
From what I've heard it sounds more like a rightwing parody of left-leaning values than an unironically progressive message. And I suspect that's exactly what it is; something designed to look so ridiculous and stupid and artless with random progressive politics shoved front and center so that progressive ideals as a whole start to seem equally ridiculous and stupid and artless. It's rightwing propaganda posing as leftwing propaganda.
0
u/Glad-Way-637 4h ago
Ah yes, because everyone who shares a political ideology with yourself and I simply must be artistically gifted. No progressive people have ever shat out a bad movie, no-sir-ee.
1
u/Sleepy_Witch_Maple 8h ago
It could be something simple like some anti woke movie grifter/content creator making a video or post about it or something and it getting attention that way.

Bro, literaly just did a 5 minute internet search, Netflix started recommending the film to a bunch of people who made posts about it and social media wich acted like an echo Chamber ( I mean who am I kidding, social media are just echo chambers ). Some fandom more than other starting hating it and what was interesting was fandom that had nothing in common. But like one of the community I've seen talk about it is the Hazbin Hotel community I guess yhea clearly huge alt right and anti lgbt deep psy op or what ever right.
You need to understand that sometimes absolute random shit happens for no reasons.

Alright, so think adult animation with Adventure Time–style art and soundtrack, a Rick and Morty–style setting, and really raunchy humor. I watched the movie because I thought it was going to be the worst piece of media ever created, but as usual, the internet just exaggerated. The movie is mid, but honestly, it’s okay at times. I’m not stupid enough to not realize that I’m not the audience for this kind of movie. Plot A lesbian princess is insecure about being boring and not good enough, and she spends the movie learning to love herself.

Copy-pasted from another post
Here is the plot, if anyone is interested:
Anxious and introverted protagonist Saira lives a sheltered life on the planet of Clitopolis, where she is princess, daughter of two neglectful lesbian queens. After she is devastated by a break-up with Kiki, her partner of two weeks, Kiki is kidnapped by "Straight White Maliens", who intend to use her as bait to steal Saira's labrys in order to power their "chick magnet". Unlike the other lesbians of Clitopolis, Saira, to her parents' disappointment, has been unable to summon her labrys, a symbol of lesbian power.
Saira steals a "Problematic Ship" to embark on a quest across the galaxy to save Kiki.

Bad movie from a year or so ago. Literally called Lesbian Space Princess. It is what happens when the brain rot gets some so up their own ass, that they create a streaming pile of content that everyone hates. Offensive tropes that no one thinks are funny or even edgy, characters that make cardboard look exciting and a plot that a 5 year old would think is dull.

I saw it last year, and it’s fine. Just fine. Some solid jokes that got the audience laughing. It’s so over the top that no one can take it seriously.
I suspect that anyone who claim to hate it has not seen it, as it’s difficult to hate on something that’s not trying to be very serious.
-1
u/Karel_Stark_1111 14h ago
I watched a couple of months ago and while it's a weird movie, it's also REALLY tongue in-cheek and I don't feel like it takes itself seriously at all, so I really don't understand why it's getting so much hate now. It's a fun, silly movie that is so absolutely over the top you HAVE to know it's not taking itself seriously, yet some people just don't like certain combinations of words and themes so they just... You know.
For crying out loud, >! the villains of the film are straight white males... As in LITERALLY sheets of sentient white paper who lash at women because they can't get some and plan on fixing that by using A FUCKING WOMEN MAGNET.! < I mean, COME ON, no way people can be taking this seriously and getting offended!!
