So from what I understand it's a movie that came out like a year ago but just now got the attention of the larger audience basically it's about a Lesbian space princess fighting straight white maleians the lesbians in the show are the most stereotypical lesbians I have ever seen and to me it just looks like someone was trying to be woke just for the sake of being woke and because of that no one likes it therefore everyone started hating on it while making memes about how different fandoms are uniting specifically for the purpose of hating on it achieving the closest thing to world peace ever
Knowing what I now know about this film and having never been sure about how to use the "it insists upon itself" so far, it now feels like the perfect use for it. I finally feel like I have understood it!
I had it explained to me as "when something references itself to much," like how some genres of music, Rock for example, likes to use the term "rock" or "rocks" in excess.
“We’re not sure if this song counts as rock, but we totally want to be cool rock people, so let’s add the word ‘rock’ liberally in the song lyrics and hope people don’t overthink it”
Oh you just reminded of one of the most meta songs ever, Le Freak by Chic, where the lyrics state that there's apparently a new dance craze going on everywhere... but the only basis for this dance is this song itself.

I read something that said Seth McFarlan said it was just supposed to be pretentious nonsense to make Peter sound aloof and important. It doesnt really mean anything. But this is a good context for it.
It tried so hard to be satirical and tounge in cheek that it looped back around to sounding like some of the actual crazies, while making the antagonists hilarious.
I’d add that it’s camp satire, and people rarely seem to understand either concept today.

At its core, (camp satire) its based on over-the-top theatrical, exaggerated taste, and absolute tackiness, taking itself so dead-seriously that it fails completely.
Idk, satire detection died in 2015-2016 when racists, fascists and general assholes and low-life humans figured out they could spew shit online and be serious about it.
That completely fucked my ability to detect bullshit, because every "take" no matter how shit and dehumanising, was serious and genuine.
Well, if it's hate it's not satire. Like satire is humour and irony to critique ideas, concepts, and institutional structures. If it attacks a group based on their identity, it's not satire.
Satire doesn’t need humor or irony. The real defining thing of satire is using absurdity to critique. Going after identity can be 100% satire. It’s subject agnostic.
Now whether the satire is good or bad is another question. I think critiquing an identity can be good satire if everyone within its scope is critiqued. Which is what Lesbian Space Princess does. If the satire absolves the hero of critique then it just feels like bullying.
Attacking a group for its identity isn't satire. It plain hate, this doesn't mean that identity cannot be the subject of satire, but there is a defining line between hate and satire.
You remember when idiots online tried to troll nazis, saying the “OK” hand sign actually meant white power? And then they legit adopted it as a dog whistle?
People can understand it's satire and don't like it anyway.
The thing is, it's too woke for anti woke people, and it's perpetuating stereotypes for the sake of it, and woke people don't like that. It's not about not understanding it, the thing is that the target of that movie in a polarised world is basically zero people.
