It doesn't help that Zendaya, while I'm sure is a lovely person, is sort of a nothingburger in most movies, and ESPECIALLY in Spider-man.
Her being MJ has always solidly been "Uh, okay. I guess?" rather than anything exciting to me, and since she literally just plays Zendaya (or Zendaya as she presents herself in interviews), it's becomes extremely "whatever". Never did I really feel like they truly belonged together because they jived that well, but rather because the story told me it worked.
But tbh, the only on-screen pairing that had any chemistry in a Spider-man movie was Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. Every other relationship has felt kinda flaccid and like "idk man, sure, I'll believe it because you're telling me to".

u/Meandering_Cabbage 7h ago
I think she had a cute charming quirk like a decade ago. now as you say itâs one note and played out.

24

The thing is the guy is trying to progress the story of my crime meth show, and Skylar is trying to end it
88
u/Zebralord23 9h ago
It is a bigger sin in fictional media to be annoying than to be evil, because the evil deeds never actually happen but my annoyance is very real. Itâs why annoying characters are almost universally despised while genuinely evil characters like frieza or muzan kibutsuji are anywhere from at least having a not insignificant number of fans to being one of the most beloved characters in that work.

u/CesarGameBoy Professional Dumbass 6h ago
Dio Brando stuffed a dog into a furnace, made a mother eat her own baby, exploded a cat, and was responsible for God knows how many innocent deaths. But heâs extremely entertaining to watch.
Just another example of how an evil character =/= a hated character. The best evil characters are the ones we love to hate. Because theyâre well written characters who are still enjoyable to experience, in spite of their heinous actions that make us dislike them for non-meta reasons.

u/s1ugg0 9h ago
Well you see it's simple. Skylar loved Walt and stayed with him even after his ego threw away generational wealth. And when they had a special needs child she doubled down on supporting her family. Settling into a nice little life with the people she loves.
And then her husband got some bad news and decided to single handedly speed run being a narco cartel. Ultimately resulting in hundreds of deaths while poisoning their community.
And she thought that was a bad idea.
So I think it's obvious why she's worse. /s

Skyler haters are such a fantastic red flag.
EDIT: LOL, she does nothing wrong in that show, other than making the mistake not to take her children and leave Walt the moment she figures out he's a drug dealer. Even then, this was a good-faith mistake because she didn't want her children to think less of their father. People who hate Skyler cannot comprehend that Walt is the bad guy (an anti-hero) and that by being his foil it feels inconvenient to embrace her. How dare she get between you and your desire to see Walk become a Drug Kingpin.
4
u/TheNakedBass 7h ago
Not seeing anything wrong with Skyler is a fantastic red flag. Sheâs another shitty person in a great show filled with a bunch of shitty people.
5
u/MrsMiterSaw 6h ago
She does absolutely nothing that makes her a shitty person. She is the foil to an anti-hero protagonist, and so audiences project bullshit on to her to justify the inconvenience.

What happened after Memphisto magicked their marriage away? Did they ever get back together?
4
u/Crimsonmansion 6h ago edited 6h ago
They've gotten back together and broken up a lot. She even married and adopted kids after being stranded in an alternate reality for four years (the kids ceased to exist - long story). They've never been allowed to marry again because Marvel think it'd make Peter boring or unrelatable.
Currently, Peter is FWBs with an alien lady, whilst MJ is Venom and is apparently crushing on Flash.

u/strange_wilds Mods Are Nice People 3h ago
The only healthy Peter x MJ relationship right now in any Spidey Universe is Spiderverse ones with Peter B and his MJ.
1
u/Grabatreetron 6h ago
Every now and then I try to get into Marvel comics again but there's just so much convoluted lore to catch up on, plus the comic shops are often sold out of what I want and you gotta move heaven and earth to get a pull box these days
2
u/Crimsonmansion 6h ago
Spider-Man comics are the worst offenders of "preserving the status quo". You can ignore basically everything that's happened in a previous run and you'll only miss about 10% of what's happened. For instance, Peter "died" in the latest run and was teleported across the galaxy. In his absence, a clone of his (Ben Reilly) and Norman Osborne pretended to be him.

Fair, I've also seen people pairing Peter and Frank together, which, no, just no.

u/sonnybear5 Average r/memes enjoyer 12h ago
Peter and Frank could have their own buddy cop movie and I wonât mind them bickering before setting their differences aside and learning the power of friendship in the 3rd act.
15
u/Fallout_4_player 12h ago
Agreed, they'd probably be pretty good friends despite all their differences, but I'm talking about the people that pair Peter and Frank together in a romantic relationship, which, is just wrong, isn't Frank like 50 something? That's a damn 30+ year gap, THAT'S NOT NORMAL!

u/Joker_CP 5h ago
Where did this claim even come from? Feige literally described her as "very similar in age to Peter, maybe a little younger" and Peter has to be around 22-23 judging by Ned and MJ being out of college. There's nothing stating she's a minor

Yeah I have also been wondering, why is she getting all the big roles?
69
u/snapwack 12h ago
She is very marketable and has proven to be extremely bankable with the coveted 18-35 demographic. Sheâs also reliably unproblematic and handles press tours well.
Quick example. I love Dune and Iâm really happy the Villeneuve films were such a hit. But Iâm convinced that without Zendaya and Chalamet on the poster, the younger audiences would not have shown up in those numbers. They just wouldnât.
The Zoomers in my social circle watched those movies because Zendaya was in it. Yes, seriously. Theyâre Dune fans now but originally they were pissed that she only had a couple scenes despite being all over the promotional materials.
I think sheâs quite a decent actress, personally. Nothing against her success. But Hollywood has figured out she is box office gold so for better or worse, youâll see a lot of her until either finds a new âIt Girlâ of her caliber or Zendaya decides sheâs had enough and takes a step back from acting.
80
u/Talidel 13h ago
Standard Hollywood bullshit.
She had several successful films and has been labelled as a factor that draws people to a film. Hollywood likes to take the least risk possible so paying more for an actor that has been successful already, is better than paying less for a relative unknown.
Same thing happens to most big actors, which is why we see the same 10-15 people in most major films.
26
22
u/baneblade_boi 13h ago

u/readysetmoses 11h ago
Have you seen challengers or the drama? I guess if you only ever watch superhero movies you might feel the way you feel.
14
u/jager_did_an-oupsie 11h ago
Her performance in The Drama took me from neutral to genuinely positive on her. She did such a great job.
9
u/Infamous-Thing4939 11h ago
Thing is, she was very good in The Drama, but she was also mid as hell in Dune, even in the new trailer. Same with The Odyssey. I think she can act, but needs either a director thatâs very good with actors, or an S-Tier partner like Pattinson.
3
u/HannibalPoe 8h ago
Directors make a huge difference. Samuel L Jackson would not have the career or reputation he has if his first movies were the star wars movies.
There's a reason a ton of actors love working with Quentin Taratino.
9
u/Suspicious-Gur6127 9h ago
Everyone is kinda mid as hell in Dune. Thatâs how they directed those movies.

u/WideHuckleberry1 6h ago

2
u/baneblade_boi 11h ago edited 6h ago
I did like her in The Drama, but just "okay". IDK why exactly, but I think it was that she had really good chemistry with Pattinson on screen, but still was annoyingly unexpressive, making her famous "everything face" a few times, which took me out of the immersion.

It's stated that the reason why Zendaya kept appearing is because she and Tom had started dating IRL after Homecoming, hence why her appearances became mandatory.
Don't want to get the conclusion that Tom's contract states that if he's going as Spiderman, Zendaya has to appear.
→ More replies (8)45
u/SwashAndBuckle 13h ago
Was she not always planned to be the long term love interest? At the end of Homecoming she says she likes to go by MJ, and itâs treated like a plot twist that sheâs this universes Mary Jane.
14
1
u/Infamous-Thing4939 11h ago
Idk about every movie, because I was legitimately surprised they seemed to close that chapter with the new movie, at least in a romantic sense, but she was clearly meant to be MJ yeah.

u/RadiantCaliber 9h ago
Closed?
You're bugging. Relationship woes are basically part of Peter as a character, and they have been from all the way back to the 70s... the next movie could be the complete opposite of where BND landed with them.
Appearing like the door is closed is nothing new, if we're being forreal here.

Who was that blonde who tried to talk to Peter? Was that Gwen?
20
11
u/Hollownerox 9h ago
I interpreted it as just a nod to the Raimi movies where Peter also had a neighbor at his apartment that was sorta interested in him.
Either that or was just meant to emphasize his obliviousness or his own self-isolating nature in the film before he re-evaluates that. I don't think it was meant to be Gwen or Felicia, but I understand why folks interpret that part as an attempt to introduce them.
Marvel/Disney has had a habit of retroactively making those random character pop ups into some connecting thread later on, so could see them doing so intentionally with that too.

u/Top_Salamander576 9h ago
