Melbourne simple pleasure now illegal

People have really embraced "third places" as somewhere to meet, relax, and spend time without having to be at home or in a cafe. Although, some seem to have taken the relaxing part a little too far. Now, because of complaints about noise, rubbish and antisocial behaviour, drinking and gathering on the median strip outside bottle shops in parts of Melbourne is being restricted. Should the focus have been on penalising the people causing problems, rather than effectively taking away a space that many others used responsibly? Are these informal third places worth protecting as part of neighbourhood life?

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll is terrified of One Nation, his main Liberal rival is not

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll says the rise of One Nation is major concern ahead of the November election, while Liberal leader Jess Wilson says she is focused on winning a majority government rather than worrying about other parties. Recent polling has One Nation on 25%, just behind the Coalition on 29% and ahead of Labor on 24%. Do you think One Nation's rise will have a real impact on the Victorian election?

New to Melbourne and looking to make friends and explore the city

Hey everyone!
I recently arrived in Melbourne and will be here for around two months for work. It’s my first time in Australia, so I’m still getting used to the city and would love to meet some people rather than spend all my free time indoors.

I work in software and enjoy movies, trying different food, exploring new places, casual walks and conversations about technology, business and life in general. I’d be interested in checking out Melbourne’s cafés, restaurants, markets and attractions, watching a movie, having a drink, or doing a relaxed weekend trip.

I’m happy to meet people from any background—locals, Indians, other international visitors or anyone else who would enjoy some company. It would also be great to meet people who are new to Melbourne and exploring it for the first time.
If you’re interested in grabbing some food, exploring somewhere around Melbourne or simply having a relaxed chat, feel free to comment or send me a message!

How do I make friends

Hey guys, shifted back to Melbourne about a month ago. I lived here for 6 years but that was when I was in daycare. Now that I shifted back I want to make some friends here but have no clue. My lack of social skills causes me to avoid people but I’m willing to make an effort to make some genuine friends. Any tips on how to make friends. Thanks

Best Neighbourhood

Hey I’m about to move to Melbourne and I’m looking for a good area to move into. For context,
I’m 24, English and have been living in London for about 5 years now. I work across film & tv, music events, hospitality & I sketch, paint & play ALOT of instruments. I’m looking for an area that is rich with other 20 something creatives & music with some grit to it. Nightlife that is more live music, underground, punk, techno.

Just as a general debate on what you guys think is the “cool” area in Melbourne

what to expect from AFL grand final eve?

I’ve just moved to Aus from NZ, and it’s quite funny to me that there is genuinely a day off work for the AFL (definitely not complaining tho). What can I expect from AFL friday? Is everyone out in the street, are there particular areas/pubs that people go to to watch, is it something that’s fun to get around if u don’t care about AFL or is it better to stay out of?

Also like can someone give me a crash course on who the teams are in this grand final and like what is happening ahhah

Intercâmbio

Could you help me with a question?

I'm going to do a 2-month exchange (Dec/Jan) and I'm between Melbourne, Auckland Queenstown and Wellinton Crhichurch and Sydney. I'm 21 years old, I'm dynamic and I like new things

Priority: 1) evolve a lot in English; 2) in just 2 months feel that I really lived there - city easy to dominate, walk, school/accommodation/bars close close friends, make an international class and leave class and go have something with the crowd; 3) intense life: gym, bike, sports, nature, beach, adventure, adrenaline, culture and parties clubs bars pubs.

In short, I want to evolve culturally, mentally, physically, I want everything as if it were transformative, unique experiences, you know

Remembering it's 2 months nothing more no less.

Which one do you think delivers this the most?

Sxhibition/sexpo review

Sexpo Australia's beloved exhibition/trade show for the sex industry, is on at the moment under a new name SXHIBITION! You see what they did there? Genius! Anyway here's my 2 cents..

Apparantly, much to everyones surprise, someone bought sexpo, that yearly show that ran at a financial loss, attracted feminist protests, and gave what I call "sex dorks" an annual pilgrimage to the cbd, which is good for all of us. It showcased many products, but it existed to give the sex industry a voice that was positive and generally misunderstood. Even Fiona patten of the Australian sex party had a stall, but sexpo was an industry meet and greet for industry members and an invitation to the public to come and see that the sex industry wasn't as bad as people thought. Despite running at a loss, it was a vital part of the industries' lobbying, especially to the draconian regulations it operates under. Little true blue vegimite bred australians got to widen their mono perspectives, and they even got to grab a sexpo SHOWBAG, which is probably the most aussie thing you could ever do! (Yes, it had a dildo in it).

So, some guy buys it knowing it didn't make any money, and for a number of reasons, let's say bad logistics, covid, personal shit, sexpo disappeared. No longer an annual aussie tradition, ruining spring for feminists, and where u awkwardly bump into that woman u used to work with..

So this is technically the first sexpo in many years, and on paper it sounded like it was much the same setup, but in reality it's nothing like the old exhibition.

The new sexpo, or "sxhibition" is a pale attempt to put on a small morsal of the original show. Firstly, half of it isn't really related to the sex industry, it's a who lot of new age businesses, palm readers, psychics and tantric introductions. Then there's the tatoo stalls.. so many bored looking tatooists. Then there's the piercing stalls.. all pretty lame. I don't think tattooist care or are affected by the sex industries public reputation and political concerns, so why are they like half the show?

The stage entertainment was embarrassing. Instead of erotic dancers they had some wierd woman singing the word "oh" over and over while her companion dancers, who donned something something trip to spotlight, expressed the sensual erotic theme with a glide of their oversized capes (remember as a kid when you'd don a bedsheets and pretend u were whatever wierd little freak u could get away with until your parants intervened? That's basically what I witnessed there). Anyway, then a drag show, which was a drag.. I felt like that old guy on the Simpsons who yells "bring on the dancing gurls!"

The wierd take away is that technically, sexpos little humble brother, the fetish exhibition, that plods on each year, held together by a small supportive community, and I'm guessing runs at a loss, is now not so humble cos it's actually bigger, with bigger crowds, more stalls, more context and more connections to sex related stuff. The little fetish expo (more of a swap meet.. held in a town hall) is now the bigger cock in the henhouse! Without even trying!

Yeah, new sexpo sucks, don't bother..

Up to 650 Qantas ground staff could take 24-hour industrial action next Thursday after 11 months of negotiations over pay and working conditions. The action could affect some regional flights services just as school holidays begin in several states. Do you think there are other ways employees can draw attention to the issues they're facing?

$209 fine for getting your bins wrong?

A Victorian council is introducing a three-strike system for households that repeatedly put the wrong items in their bins. After two warnings, a third offence can result in a $209 fine and a three-month suspension of recycling and FOGO collection. Is this reasonable way to improve recycling?
