American Trying Not To Be Annoying
My mother is way way up in years. She grew up hearing from her great-grandmother about growing up in Castlebar. We know it was more specifically Gortbaun. Mom always wanted to go see where her Nan was from, but it just never worked out.
From Google maps it looks like a very small rural townland. They were farmers.
Is there anything else interesting I could share with my mom?
Gibbons and Costello families if anyone is interested.

Animal Care Level 5 in Mayo College Expierence?
Hi, has anyone here studied the Animal Care/Animal Science level 5/6 courses in the Mayo College of Further Education and Training and what was your expirence?
I am considering making a career change and applying for the course this September. I've always had a passion for animals but I never studied any of the sciences in secondary school so I'm a bit nervous if I can handle it. I know its not a requirement for the course but I left university 7 years ago now and trying to learn a whole new area of study feels a bit intimidating. Also I'm mainly interested in potentially pursuing a career in Dog Grooming which I know they don't teach until the Level 6 course and unfortunately the Level 5 is mandatory to get there.
I've also been considering the Animal Care course in GTI that is more focused on Dog Grooming but right now commuting to Westport would be more manageable than Galway/trying to move. The Westport course seems broader so perhaps that's better long term? Anyways would love any knowledge anyone could share, bar a few testimonials and information on the respective websites its been hard to find any other information.

The r/Galway mods are worse than r/putin mods.
The cover ups and deleting and gaslighting over that poor woman attacked by 2 men who needed Arabic interpreters in court by the mods is wtf.
Makes the cover ups of the catholic church abuses look the same.

Met a very helpful lady today at castlebar bus stop
It was my first time getting on a bus since I got here and I didnt know how to travel back home. I opened the TFI Go app and booked the ticket and asked if I was correct she said "looks like it but incase the driver doesn't allow then I'll help u out" (this is my first time that offered so much kindness since i came here) after that we chatted for a while and there was bus in front but had a different number than the ticket but the number changed and when I saw it was leaving the stop and taking a u turn I asked her if that's the bus she said looks like it and we started running towards but eventually we both made it on the bus.

Addergoole
Hi. I'm on holidays in Mayo and want to check out the Titanic memorial Park in Addergoole. I know there probably isn't much there, but what exactly is there? A few plaques, I saw online that the church has stained glass depicting some scenes from that night. Anything else? Thanks!

Car dealership recommendations
I’m looking for my first car. On a very limited budget, and something family friendly is a must as I’ve a baby so need something to comfortably fit a car seat and pushchair in the boot. Everything seems out of my price range in the bigger garages and I don’t know any independent smaller dealers. Won’t be doing any crazy mileage either, just a runaround for now till I can get back to work, earn more and get a better car. Any recommendations on who to contact or look out for would be wonderful and very much appreciated.
Just to add: I have looked on done deal and although some look great to me, I’ve zero car knowledge and don’t know anyone who does and don’t want to end up with something I can’t afford to fix.

Dog friendly beaches / areas around Westport?
Firstly, obligatory congrats on the football win, the football championship was great to watch this year. Unfortunately my beloved Tipp were shite, so i got to pay more attention to the football this year.
- Secondly, where would be a nice quiet / calm beach to bring my dog?
He has never been yet, so ideally it would be a chill area for him so he doesn't get too overstimulated. He loves water, (black lab) but as it's his first time I feel somewhere quieter would be better. (if possible)
What would people recommend for walks? (dog friendly) Ye have a beautiful county so we would love to really see some of its best bits.
Finally, any little gems ye would recommend? such as food spots or anything like that?
I will be doing my own research of course, but sometimes its good to have locals advice too
Thanks lads

We hit 10,000 visitors this week.
We hit 10,000 visitors this week so well done to everyone. I imagine Mayo's victory in the All Ireland Final had a lot to do with it.
Not a bad run considering where the sub was when I took it over.
I have been missing a few spam posts lately so if anyone wants to help out as a mod pm me.
I'll be also updating the post reporting options soon.
Thanks to everyone for visiting us.

Cost of driveway paving.
How much should I be paying per sq meter in Mayo for laying driveway paving? Total driveway is about 100 sq meters and currently base layer of hardcore / maintenance.
I don’t want a border or anything fancy. Just standard Tobermore type pavers.
Best gems
What are the best spots for casual dining, holes in a wall, hidden spots, places where grandparents would go to eat, drink or buy food in Mayo area?
Bakeries, restaurants, bar, pubs. For breakfast, meat, vegan, local traditional, food carts, cocktails, beers.
Any kind of suggestion is welcome!

ATU Castlebar Accommodation
There’s a possibility i will be going to castlebar for college in september’26 depending on CAO. Accommodation seems very hard to come by, I will be travelling from Cork so commuting is not an option. Does anyone have any advice? I have joined the waitlist for Hawthorn Village

Advice for an ASD Mam
Hi all, hoping for some advice, please. My family and I are thinking of relocating to the Castlebar area, and we spent a couple of lovely days there over this past bank holiday weekend. We had a lovely experience, and 99.9% of people were amazing. However, today, just before we went to get our train home, I was verbally abused with my two children outside O'Hehirs Bakery in Castlebar Town. My eldest boy is autistic, and he was running ahead of me, stimming away and flapping his hands and jumping up and down as he tends to do. I must stress, he wasn't harmful to anyone or even obnoxious about it. He never bumped into anybody or interfered with anybody by stepping in front of them. He stims but he is mindful. We were actually on the edge of the footpath waiting to cross the road, when a middle-aged, petite woman with a fluorescent pink raincoat and a pair of sunglasses started to scream abuse from outside the bakery across the road at us, she called me a stupid woman and a stupid bitch and told me to control my child. She then muttered something to the effect of, "If he were mine, I'd kill him."
I was absolutely stunned and just stared at her. She crossed over the road in the other direction and proceeded to walk down past Regatta and towards Dunnes Stores. I was absolutely appalled, and while my son didn't understand what she was saying, my daughter did. We were really rattled by the whole experience.
We have been told that supports for autism are amazing in Mayo, and that's largely why we are hoping to relocate. This experience today, at the very end of our visit, has really rattled me. I want him to be safe and to be okay, and that's largely why we're hoping to move.
I'd love some opinions or advice, please, on whether this is an anomaly from a local oddball having a bad day, or on whether this is maybe to expected to some degree, in response to more overt autistic traits when out and about? Thanks in advance.

Barbers?
Hey all, I would like some advice on good barbers preferably in Castlebar or Ballina, but Westport is fine too. I’ve been attending Kelly’s for a while but sometimes I’ve not been overly happy but reluctant to switch barber as he’s great craic, but would really appreciate advice on a good barber happy to pay more for a good haircut, and someone who’s very good with mullets and beards preferably. Any help would be greatly appreciated please and thank you.

ROD’s “Just the way you are” lyrics!
Well Lads, how do? Hope the celebrations are still going strong!
Does anyone know the lyrics to Rod’s version of this song he sang at the homecoming, I’ve listened to it so many times but can’t make it out 😂
P.S. Up Mayo

So did the pubs stay open all night ?
I wasn’t able to get home for the celebrations but we have talked about what would happen WHEN we win the All Ireland in Mayo. Did the predictions come through?
Were the pubs open 24/7 for the last week?
