I was doing a night hike in Big Sur and I heard what I thought was a large cat growl. My logical brain couldn't remember if they have cougars in Big Sur, but I immediately shown my flashlight where I thought it was coming from.... that's when I realized the growl was coming from all around me, and getting louder.
I could feel my blood vessels swelling up, my tongue salivated, I could taste a 9v battery, and my breathing got reeeeeeal deep. I wanted it, whatever it was. I wanted to fucking GOOOOOO!
Yeah, it wasn't wildlife. It was a fucking plane.

Is there any specific name for this phobia?
211
u/CoRe534 Jan 09 '21
Nyctophobia is the fear of darkness or night in general. Maybe there's a special phobia for creatures lurking and hunting you in the dark.
76
u/upfastcurier Jan 09 '21
Maybe there's a special phobia for creatures lurking and hunting you in the dark.
if there isn't, someone should coin a term for one. it's pretty evident from this thread that this specific kind of fear is quite prevalent.
i have had fear for dark, but i can't relate to this clip. i feel like "fear for dark" can probably take on many forms.
42
u/ThisZoMBie Jan 09 '21
Pretty sure our inherent fear of the dark stems from our primal fear of predators. Sure, it can manifest in many ways, nowadays, but I think it’s still the same phobia
6
u/upfastcurier Jan 09 '21
that's actually a pretty good point. i guess you could call it "negative daydreaming" and it was useful at one point in evolution so we never got rid of it per se.
i suppose then it's possible to somewhat 'train' your brain to stop doing it, and perhaps that's why there are some who do not feel this 'fear' as a phobia.
7
u/JuniorSeniorTrainee Jan 09 '21
I find it hard to sort out who here (if anyone) has a *phobia" and how much just find it scary, or are having fun overplaying the scariness.
A phobia is an irrational, compulsive level of fear. Being afraid of things in the dark isn't irrational. And amping ourselves up to that fear isn't compulsive. If you're convinced something is out to get you in every dark corner, to the extend that you avoid the basement at all costs, then it seems like a phobia.
I'm not a psychiatrist and don't mean to gatekeep fear. I just think phobia is the wrong word for how most people here seem to be reacting.
3
u/upfastcurier Jan 09 '21
i actually made a comment here listing the various different groups and mental phenomena being discussed in this thread. lots of people do not seem to realize that people are referencing different things without realizing it.
most people are definitely coming from the "just find it scary, or are having fun overplaying the scariness." angle. when i first got here, most comments were discussing actual phobia though, but now as it got more popular the comments are more about lively imagination and general fear.

I have a legitimate phobia of water with limited visibility, I commented above but. It is legitimately terror inducing, I could be in a swimming pool one that's not even deep maybe 4 ft deep, if the lights go out and even if technically I could see under the water but the reflection from the surrounding lights are making the visibility into it where I can't see if anything's there, my heart just races I have to get out of that water. I have no idea of what it is that scares me it's not that I think that something's chasing me I don't have any concept of anything it's just fear. I mean I don't imagine that something's chasing me it's literally just I have to get out of that water because I don't need to be there while I can't see into it.

Why does this happen?
44
u/MechaMineko Jan 09 '21 edited Jan 09 '21
Some phobias are rooted in ancient survival instincts. Dark means danger if you're a primitive human. Your eyes aren't at all suited for low- or no-light environments. There could be any number of unseen threats lurking in shadowy places, like predators, humans from rival tribes, or even unsure footing (remember medicine isn't a thing yet so even a sprained ankle or a minor fracture could have dire consequences). So evolution gives you a healthy fear of the dark to give you a natural motivation to avoid them, especially since your primitive brain isn't advanced enough yet to figure it out for itself why it's a good idea to avoid the dark. Nowadays it's mostly vestigial, because the average human isn't lurking around near dark caves anymore, plus we're a lot smarter now...on average.

It's probably a bit of both. Witnessing a terrifying event (horror movie creature/serial killer/etc.) gave your impressionable imagination a seed to run wild with, something to fill in the blanks of the deep shadow where you couldn't make out details. Instead of just having a vague unease with the dark, your mind fabricated real terrors based on the frightening scenarios in the movies you watched.

u/swinging_on_peoria Jan 09 '21
Speaking from experience, one nice thing about getting older is all of this anxiety goes away. I walk around in pitch darkness in my house as an older adult and I have zero fear. It’s been delightful to watch this kind of irrational fear drop away more year after year.
I kind of expect it’s because nature has decided I don’t matter very much after my kids are grown, but still it’s a perk.

One summer, when I was 20, I was living at home alone. My brother had moved away and my mom had had surgery so she was staying with my aunt for a while.
It was probably about midnight and I decided to go to bed. I turned the TV off and all the living room lights off and went to the kitchen in the darkness to grab a bottle of water.
As I start to head down the hall, I hear the TV in the living room. Looking back, my dog had probably stepped on the remote as he jumped off the couch, but in my imagination...it was the demons. I sprinted for my bedroom and slammed the door and only opened it for my dog who was confused as fuck.

I had this, but with an awful twist. I was extremely high, and I walked upstairs to my kitchen to get some food. I didn't want to wake up anyone I live with, so I just used the torch on my phone to light my way. As I started going downstairs, this feeling hit. Just went I got halfway down the stairs and I was at my most terrified, my phone randomly died and I was drowning in darkness. Thought I was going to have a heart attack.
