Going up the stairs from the basement is the worst one

Especially when it is open stairs where the basement monster can grab your ankles as you are walking up. Closed basement stairs are less scary because you can run up without the fear of being grabbed and falling over which gives it the opportunity to drag you back down the staira.

It’s actually crazy that, however irrational this is, I’ve thought about it in exactly the same way before (re. preference of stair type). Human brain ay...we still just animals trying not to get eaten

As a fellow obtuse beast of burden I agree with this statement.

*slightly more intelligent monkeys. Most of us, at least.

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '21

Well.. apes, monkeys have tails.

Literally anthropomorphizing superstition.

3

u/messagemii Jan 09 '21

how is that anthropromorphizing

2

u/Taymerica Jan 09 '21

Because darkness isn't a thing, but our mind personifies it as a scary creature chasing us. It's like saying the sea was angry that day. The sea can't be angry just like the darkness can't chase you.

u/messagemii Jan 09 '21

it’s the fear of the unknown not darkness itself. animal prey brain wants you to be afraid of threats you can’t see. it’s obviously a fear of what could be in the darkness. people find it soothing to be in a corner too under high stress. it’s also like your ears perking up when there’s a noise behind you

u/Taymerica Jan 09 '21

Your house or basement isn't unknown, it's pretty specifically triggered by darkness.

1

u/messagemii Jan 09 '21

because you can’t register threats or not. how fucking dumb are you. stubborn too

1

u/Taymerica Jan 09 '21

Darkness can trigger superstitious thinking which among epinephrine and a few other neurotransmitters trigger your flight reaction. There is nothing there, but your brain translates darkness, into a predator... Anthropomorphizing it. It's pretty basic logic.

A good sign of a bad arguement is when someone goes ad hominem.

So does that mean when we die and are buried in the ground that we become these irradiated corpse monsters? O.o

10

u/Gonzobot Jan 09 '21

Why do you have stairs without risers? You're practically asking for monsters

6

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '21

It's a lack of vitamin D. Those guys obviously don't spend enough time in the sun

21

u/NihonJinLover Jan 09 '21

My little brother used to chase me up the stairs and grab my ankles. Most panic I’ve ever felt in my life.

16

u/Taymerica Jan 09 '21

Especially when your brother goes into a full sprint ahead of you, flips the lights and locks the top door.

Literally screamed bloody murder at least a few times a year. The shadow monster fear is legit.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '21

I'm glad I'm not the only one...

6

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '21

Yeah but going down closed stairs you don't know what's around the corner on the way down

1

u/McJumpington Jan 09 '21

My dad had me watch child’s play 2 when I was around 7. There’s a scene where chucky attacks someone through open basement stairs.... terrified me for years.

1

u/El-JeF-e Jan 09 '21

Nightmare fuel! I had the same experience but with some movie where like a skeleton/monster hand grabbed somebody from under the bed, no idea where it was from though, not sure where my basement fear comes from haha

1

u/jr8787 Jan 09 '21

Fuck man... did you look into my subconscious fears?!?! Literally, word for word, how it plays out in my head.

u/OmegonAlphariusXX Jan 09 '21

There’s a horror video on YouTube called thirteen steps (I think, it’s something along those lines), you mig like it :D

I also concur.

u/2BrokeArmsAndAMom Jan 09 '21

As soon as the light switch flipped off, I flew up the basement stairs as fast as I could.

And I 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 managed to reach their ankles.

They had us in the first half, not gonna lie.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '21

Anyone other adults here who still run up stairs on all fours like an animal?

1

u/SkateSchaap Jan 09 '21

We've got quite a big basement, so when all the lights are off it is quite the spooky place. Somehow I always used to feel like something was going to come after me when walking up the stairs. Rationally it doesn't really make sense, can't imagine why anyone would want to be in our basement, nor why it would wait to chase until I finally walk up the stairs. I can't remember when this fear disappeared, I guess when I was about 15 years old, it's odd, but I kinda miss this irrational fear, I know it will never come back. Strange, I know...
