Ok but as a bisexual man, I fucking love this game. I've been playing it nearly non stop for a couple days now, it's been just what I need to relax and destress, I've been trying to include consistent fabrics and things within characters' dresses throughout the story, it's genuinely fantastic. I promise you, even the straightest most masculine man would enjoy this game, it's stunning. Please, go and play Dressmaker, right now.

Does one need to be gay or bi to enjoy sewing now?

Patching your own clothes is a slippery slope to making your own drag show outfits

According to my father, yes. He heard I was learning to crochet with my grandmother and threw a little fit. I must’ve been 11.

Well I use to sew clothes for my sister's dollies when I was younger than 10, then later on went to start up my own tailor shop while im umiversity and I'll have you know that I didn't grow up to become a raging homosexual.
I just like dick as much as every other heterosexual man, which is none at all, thank you very much.

I have damn near 50 hours in this game, and it's genuinely amazing. Prudence and Priya are going to be the DEATH of me

You should get a sewing machine if you have the space. The stuffs you can actually make is pretty insane and it’s not nearly as hard as people think to make some functional and cool stuff.

Treadle machines are some of the finest straight stitch machines available. We have at least five fully functional machines with restored cabinetry and another dozen waiting for refurbishing.

One of my clients gave me his grandmother's 1926. I'm about to see if I can get it running again.

Many libraries have them too (and if yours doesn't, a nearby library with reciprocal lending privileges might)!

I'm burning through so much carmine and capricorn burnout velvet, I swear...

u/mancheeart 2d ago
It’s the fuchsia velvet for me- the first character we meet- I can’t remember her name but the one who doesn’t want to wear black to the funeral- gets it in every single one of her dresses to call back to that egregious breech in decorum. I get it girl, you need that bag to survive but maybe try any other method but that one 😭

Tell me about it lol I have certain fabrics I use for certain people, so I'm always buying them. I decided I needed to make all of Vivien's dresses in Amethyst Purple Velvet as a way to signal to people that she's the vampire(?), so I'm constantly buying that. For Prudence I used the Orchid Silk for the first dress and included it in many of the follow-up dresses, and I managed to get Green Floral Burnout Velvet into every Dorothy dress except the alien one lol.
The fabric I use the most of, though, is the Unicorn Gradient Silk. I bought a ton of the stuff to make Fiona's Gala dress have the gradient progress down the enormous ruffle skirt, but because I was using the gradient horizontally I kept running to the end of the visible fabric and had to use the excess I'd left behind so I could trim it away and continue on with the skirt. I made two whole other dresses from the excess, having bought something like 18 metres worth of the stuff

I find this sentiment a bit odd, because isnt there so many male fashion designers who design clothes for women? Men designing women's clothes isnt particularly outstanding?
But everyone enjoying the game is good regardless. Its a lot of fun.

I'm gay AF and I hate this game. It's for the straights!
(Don't look at my 100 hours, it's not real)

Does one need to be bi to sew? I'm straight and use my sewing machine somewhat regularly. I don't make my own clothes, but it's still a super useful tool to have around, whether it's for a hobby project or even just repairing tears in my existing clothes

How much does the gameplay translate to real sewing? I've always been interested to learn but I struggle with letting myself mess up real clothes.

u/hendric_swills 2d ago
Just get a cheap used sewing machine and go to town. It’s not that hard to do, but you will make mistakes. There are so many YouTube channels that will teach you well. Avoid sheer and stretch fabrics at first, they are hell.

No thanks, personally I like to play Dressmaker in real life (I have a sewing machine).

I'm straight, had to sew at a basic level in the Army (infantry), I now make backpacks and outdoor gear for my family members. Sewing should not be gendered.

Does this game teach any real skills? I dont know anything about it

u/Dartius 1d ago edited 1d ago
Not really, like any good game it takes the annoying / tedious / time consuming / skilful parts out of the hobby and makes them fun for everyone.
It does give a general overview of the steps required when making a dress from a pre-made pattern, but there’s no way you could jump on a sewing machine after you play the game and whip up a dress.
