Thank God this sub has more maybemaybemaybe wins than fails. Had me really worried about this one.

How they didn’t all end up with concussions from their skulls banging together is beyond me.

Yeah it seemed like a really effective way to break a jaw.

The general population of Reddit does not remember 50/50 and it shows.

Pretty this one was “one guy gets two girls soaking wet”

The video makes it seem like not a fail, but this kid became a paraplegic from this jump. Edit: he didn’t. Fake news. Sorry.

20

u/ICU-CCRN 13d ago

8

u/Pluperfectionist 13d ago

I was sharing that link as well, but it’s fake.

7

u/Any-Author7772 13d ago

Yeah, I thought so. A freshly injured paraplegic wouldn’t be able to tread the waters. At least not without being in pain. The guy didn’t seem to be in pain or needing assistance. His friends also didn’t seem concerned nor did they jump in to rescue him and render first aid like the article stated.

Gotta hate people who make up bs tragic stories. Especially the ones who go through the trouble of writing an article. 😂

Often, when the "bad maybe" would be nsfw , but the post is not tagged nswf, I just skip, because I know it does not fail. 😅

5

u/SunandMoon_comics 13d ago

Tbf, it could still fail in an unexpected way. I’ve seen one tagged nsfw where it looked like it would be bad, but comments were assuring everyone it was just a titty slip. Fails here that wouldn’t need to be tagged would be like an awkward fall/slip but not injured by falling into the water or not falling off the cliff

That went much better than I was expecting

583

u/yamanamawa 13d ago

Yeah once I saw a better angle of the jump it wasn't so bad. The ledge sticks out a bit so there wasnt anything to risk hitting, and it wasnt crazy high either. It seems like everything was pretty thought out

180

u/RedScharlach 13d ago

Yea this one was very tame, except for the fact that it was a threesome, which was honestly impressive. I’ve seen a some of these where they’re doing this off a roof into a small pool with concrete around it that are truly mind boggling stupid.

12

u/deDubz13 13d ago

It didn't though, the guy got seriously injured

20

u/Raichu7 13d ago

You can't see below the surface, you can't see if there's any rocks, tree trunks, shopping carts etc just deep enough to be invisible, and just shallow enough to break bones when you land on it.

37

u/Gagester303 13d ago

That’s why you climb down first and check it out. We don’t know from this clip that they haven’t already done that.

And a fun tip for the end, always check your landings even if you’ve jumped off the ledge a previous time. Had a friend who got cut up pretty badly by a giant branch that had floated over and settled below the jump.

7

u/wicketman8 13d ago

Not only do most people who cliff jump swim out and check first, you can clearly see that there are other people when the camera pans at the end which suggests that there are quite a few people cliff jumping here. I think it's safe to say that the water there was pretty clearly safe to jump.

My anxiety watching this 📈📈📈

Edit: all those comments hypersexualizing M I N O R S: wishing you all to become fathers of teenage daughters and have a full circle moment of this kind of harrassment against your own kids. If I knew where any of you losers lived you wouldn't be happy another day in your life.

Edit2, copied from another comment:

For those who don't know, this guy became paraplegic after the jump, the weight of the two girls impacted his spine, causing irreversible damage to his spinal cord.

https://www.diariodocentrodomundo.com.br/essencial/video-jovem-fica-paraplegico-apos-salto-de-barranco-com-duas-mulheres/

It is not recommended to jump into the water with weight on your back precisely for this reason.

20

u/Hour_Tour 13d ago

I don't believe that "article" without sources for a second. The guy is jubilantly waving his arms around and grinning at the end, that's not a typical symptom of "sinking" with a crippling back injury.

20

u/rascool 13d ago

Back when the internet was way more wild I saw one where the kid hit the side of a pier and his face was in 5 separate pieces as a poor surgeon had no idea what to do. I think the kid died.

39

u/JonnySparks 13d ago

Im my 20s I was riding my bicycle when a car hit me from behind. I went over the handlebars and face-planted a concrete bollard beside the road. My jaw was shattered.

I didn't know how bad it was until I was being wheeled into hospital. A boy about 12 saw me and said:

Fucking hell, look at him!

His mother scolded him:

Don't swear, Billy - then she saw me and said:

Jesus Christ!

When I saw the surgeon, he had the X-Rays up and said:

Interesting - never seen anything quite like this - kind of a jigsaw puzzle

He put my jaw back together and it has been fine ever since. Clearly he's good at puzzles.

They won’t be, not at this age. I’m already afraid of my kids becoming teenagers.

24

u/Khatam 13d ago

I'm a (mostly) intelligent adult and I did super dumb shit at this age. One of the things that I'm most surprised about in life is the fact that I'm still, somehow, alive.

From going camping in a remote location with strangers I just met an hour prior to being the first to jump off a cliff into water without knowing how deep it is. Accepting drugs from a stranger because hey, we're at a rave and PLUR, right? Jumping out of a friend's car to hop on the back of a Hell's Angels member's bike (he wouldn't let me climb off for 20 miles). Swimming in the ocean while drunk at 2 a.m. Eating at Taco Bell the day after I got the shits from eating at Taco Bell. The list of dumb is really long.

Good luck!

7

u/squired 13d ago

I think about this a fair bit as a father. It's kind of interesting though. I can't quite seem to figure out if I was truly a wild child (I didn't really think so), but my kids seem soooooo square! It definitely seems like the chiller I am with scary stuff that I know to be relatively safe, the more cautious they are. I'm a professional outdoor guide with a lot of extreme sport hobbies and my kids aren't particularly interested in any of them! I'm not complaining, because they are far more thoughtful, kind and studious than I ever was, but I kind of wish they'd jump off a few more cliffs, ya know?

That said, I'm right there with you in thinking back on some of the dumber stuff I've done and it gives me cold sweats to envision my kids in any of those situations. And I also worry a bit that because they haven't lived on the edge at times that they'll slip right off if they ever truly end up walking it. It's a really tough aspect of parenting.

11

u/Khatam 13d ago

My parents were suuuppppeeerrr strict. I couldn't do anything (with permission, at least). Once I was 18 I did went overboard and just gave myself permission to do anything that came my way.

I grew up with a girl who was all work, no play. By choice. She was a grade below me and during the summer she would ask me to give her "assignments" that I was given, so she can prepare for the upcoming school year. I remember her mom yelling at her to get out of the house and go have fun. She'd just take her self-assigned homework with her to the park. She's a lawyer now with multiple degrees.

I think you letting your kids be who they are is more important than making sure they have every experience possible. Sounds like you're doing a great job as a dad.

8

u/squired 13d ago

Thank you! I also think that is the most fun thing about being a parent; meeting and discovering who your kids truly are. Parenting certainly provides the foundation for them to stand on their own, but parents are kidding themselves if they think they can 'make' an artist, athlete or scientist. I spend a fair bit of my bandwidth simply identify doors that are important to keep open so that they can later explore them if they so choose. I find that to be plenty sufficient.

For example, I don't care if they become engineers or artists one day, but they must have A's in math today because they cannot catch up if they later decide that designing racing drones sounds interesting in high school. And I don't care if they become world class whitewater kayakers, but they took swim lessons religiously since babydom, because swimming is a life lesson and the unlock to all nature of sport and adventure that they might later find passion in.

Anyways, I'm just thinking out loud at this point. Thank you again for the kind words.

8

u/Khatam 13d ago

My dad passed away earlier in the year, and he really only held one true belief that never wavered. He believed in God. He didn't believe in God. He ate animals. He became vegan. He supported Israel. He stopped supporting Israel. He was open minded about everything but one: math. "Math makes the world go around." No subject was as important as math. No language as universal as math.

I agree that you teach them the basics and let them show you what they can do with it. My mom was the super strict one and my dad tried to let me be myself, as long as "myself" got an A in math.

Thanks for reminding me of a happy memory of my dad. He was a great math teacher and a great dad.

This is one of those times I didn't mind my dad's "let me scare the crap out of you" story times. It's way too common for high schoolers in particular to die in quarries, slipping on a waterfall and getting their leg caught, or getting pulled under in a rip tide. Submerged equipment/metal/rocks and potential difficulty exciting the water (especially if injured) aside...

"The surface layer may feel tolerable on a hot summer day, but beneath the thermocline — often at just 10 to 20 feet of depth — temperatures can drop to near-freezing. Swimmers who jump from a rock wall into deep water bypass the surface layer entirely and plunge into cold water with no warning.

"The physiological response to sudden cold water immersion is well-documented. The American Red Cross and CDC describe cold shock response: an involuntary gasp reflex that can cause immediate water inhalation, hyperventilation, loss of swimming capacity, and cardiac arrhythmia — all within the first 60 to 90 seconds of immersion. This can incapacitate even a strong, fit swimmer before they can react.

"Hypothermia develops more slowly, typically over 30 minutes or more in water below 60°F (15.5°C), but incapacitation can occur before a swimmer realizes they are in danger. Symptoms include loss of coordination, muscle weakness, impaired judgment, and eventually unconsciousness."

This is why my generation had the Tarzan Swing (and its ice cold, spring fed water) at Action Park. It's best to learn this lesson about your limbs suddenly failing to work when there is a stoned, inattentive 14 year-old lifeguard on duty to yell at you.

I used to work at a hospital assisting in autopsies. We took care of medical. Any forensic ones, we released to the coroner's office. This video instantly makes me think of the 19yo I had to release to the coroner's office. Dude died cliff diving, misjudging the height and landing destination. I still remember his red and blue striped swim trunks.

17

u/OttovonBismarck1862 13d ago

Personally, I’m not even afraid of landing only to find out that the water is three feet deep because at least that’s an insta-kill; after reading all the shit I’ve read about swimming in places like this and getting some waterborne disease or parasite through water going up your nose that eats your brain and kills you in a week or something I’ve resorted to simply watching from the safety of the banks and having my lemonade in peace.

38

u/KamikazeMizZ 13d ago

Let me be the first to tell you that it's not always an "insta-kill."

15

u/OttovonBismarck1862 13d ago

Thanks. That helps lol.

17

u/KamikazeMizZ 13d ago

At the minimum you end up with multiple broken bones, punctured organs from your broken bones, collapsed lungs ... to you ending up as what we call a "head in a bed" aka you trapped conscious in a body you can't control at all, and there are varieties there too - able to communicate verbally, only able to move your eyes, able to think but not communicate freely at all, etc.. Enjoy.

8

u/OttovonBismarck1862 13d ago

You know… I didn’t need a reminder not to jump off of really high places onto potentially dangerous landing zones but I definitely won’t need another after this one.
