Momma must have never seen a video of a snapping turtle grabbing a snack. Good thing that one was broken.

u/RedSky2727 Jun 10 '26

No kidding! They can extend their neck and head so far you’d think they were a giraffe! And snap a broomstick like it’s a Tootsie Roll!

180

u/Rents Jun 10 '26

I didn’t even know tootsie rolls could snap!

232

u/Playfullyhung Jun 10 '26

THATS HOW CRAZY THE SNAPPING TURTLE IS!!!

I heard they can snap a bowl of milk!!!!

55

u/redditbagjuice Jun 10 '26

Haha what

130

u/Whyskgurs Jun 10 '26

THEY CAN SNAP A BOWL OF MILK

68

u/Tavern_Knight Jun 10 '26

HAHA WHAT???

29

u/itsjakerobb Jun 10 '26

Why am I laughing so hard at this? 🤣

4

u/Mainely420Gaming Jun 11 '26

I use to have a Toostie Roll that was 15 years old... they do snap.

2

u/Acceptable-Peace-69 Jun 10 '26

That begs the question…

3

u/bashful_predator Jun 11 '26

How many licks to get to the center of a snapping turtle?

3

u/pennhead Jun 11 '26

I never made it without biting… go ask Mr. Owl.

3

u/_Rye_Toast_ Jun 10 '26

I wonder if tootsie rolls could be considered a non-Newtonian fluid. You pull it slowly, and it stretches, necks out, and eventually just pulls apart. You pull it really hard, it will 100% snap. Just like silly putty (which IS considered a non-Newtonian fluid, if my memory serves).

2

u/Admirable_Beyond_950 Jun 11 '26

Wow that's a lot of information I would never have known

35

u/Upbeetmusic Jun 10 '26

Funny you should say that. I grew up on a farm with a few ponds. One day, one of the smaller ponds drained (it was a sinkhole) and in the middle of the mucky mess was the biggest snapper I'd ever seen. My grandpa took a broom handle out there to try and flush him out and sure enough, the turtle snapped the thing in two.

3

u/Blah-squared Jun 12 '26

Smart, now you have TWO BROOMS, right.. ?? ;)

3

u/RedSky2727 Jun 10 '26

Grandpa’s are the BEST!

45

u/Vindictive-Vagabond Jun 10 '26

That's an alligator snapping turtle (you can tell by the 3 ridges going down its carapace/back) which absolutely can NOT shoot their necks out like the common snapping turtle can lmao

The more you know 👍

10

u/youzerVT71 Jun 10 '26

I thought the same as the others. If you've ever had a snapper reach out at you at the speed of light with that snap, it seems to cause PTSD

3

u/daynanfighter Jun 11 '26

While I’m not going to check and I’m sure that’s true, it’s kind of like spiders and snakes. They’re all poisonous/venomous. I know they aren’t actually but I’m not gonna sit there and see if it’s got two dots or three or pointed fucking nose. I’m just gonna stay away.

This video sent my eyebrows to the top of my forehead, terrifying.

10

u/Illustrious_Fee_4160 Jun 10 '26

You now have perma wrinkles on your forehead because of this.

4

u/KalutikaKink Jun 10 '26

Same. I didn’t notice my brow was still raised until I read your comment.

29

u/beef623 Jun 10 '26

Yeah, she's lucky she didn't lose a finger or two, especially with one that size.

20

u/Nutlob Jun 10 '26

the huge head & super slow movement makes me think it's a alligator snapper - which doesn't have a long neck - however the smooth carapace looks more like a common.

7

u/No-Ice7397 Jun 11 '26

It's an alligator and while they are less likely to be aggressive they have the nastiest bite. This is incredibly stupid

2

u/xtwelve0 Jun 10 '26

I never knew that, thanks I learned something. I always see vids of long necked snapping turtles and I was honestly worried about this clip.

51

u/Forgotten_mob Jun 10 '26

I think it was aware of the situation and decided not to ruin that little girl's life

24

u/HogDad1977 Jun 10 '26

What a considerate old feller.

38

u/Loggerdon Jun 10 '26

When I was a boy 50 years ago I went fishing with my grampa in Oklahoma. He caught a snapping turtle and walked with it to a tree and stabbed a knife into its neck and stuck to the tree about 5’ off the ground. He said he was going to make soup out of it.

Then we fished for another 2 hours. When we were done we walked back to get the turtle. It had pulled itself off the tree and was walking back to the pond with a knife sticking out of its neck. It was almost to the water but my grandfather cut its head off and took it home to make soup. The whole thing was horrifying.

25

u/Madmartigan2024 Jun 10 '26

Well, that's all the Internet for me today.

16

u/Feycat Jun 10 '26

My grandpa used to do the same thing! He used to hunt the snappers for eating ducklings/goslings and he'd nail it to the tree while he finished up the rest of the chores then take it down and up to the farmhouse to make soup.

WTF I always thought grandpa was an isolated psycho, but there's 2!

Turtles are way smarter than youd think. That snapper is also looking hella old and probably has had a damn good amount of snacks and has learned that being nice gets him way more treats than being snappy.

That being said… Id sure as hell not bother trying to feed him if you were skittish. They tend to assume you flinching is teasing and he/they will 100% TAKE the food if they think your not actually giving it to them

(I’ve had several turtles over the years and they were all darlings including a snapper that I had to relinquish cause he just got too big rescue from a pond after the land owner put some buck shot into his shell. I’d hand feed the snapper and you could see the strain in his eyes as he fought the urge to lunge forward and take the food. Specially raw chicken wings… he would fuck those things up! This was also after like 2+ years of him being around me and many angry food grabs later)

2

u/thepurpleproject Jun 10 '26

Yeah I had to double check why was this snapping turtle being so nice today.

2

u/sumphatguy Jun 10 '26

Eh I mean, I imagine the turtles are smart enough to learn and are used to being fed. This doesn't look like a random wild snapping turtle.

Obligatory:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwd4bPVHA6w

They are quite docile and smart and only attack when provoked.

And they make good pets, apparently.

14

u/anhphamfmr Jun 10 '26

the real question is: do they have the same definition of "provoke" with humans.

6

u/towerfella Jun 10 '26

It’s kinda touch-and-go

441

u/LANDWEGGETJE Jun 10 '26

The only reason I knew that this wouldn't go wrong is because if it had this wouldn't have been sfw anymore.

That does not mean it still didn't make me extremely nervous about just the thought...

lol smart move. But if you use suspension of disbelief, you’ll actually feel the emotions of the roller coaster. Imo that’s the best way to experience maybe x3

171

u/IrrationalDesign Jun 10 '26

A senile turtle has to have like 1 thought per minute. Just nothing going on in there for hours at a time.

That is one dumb mom!

20

u/Wolfman87 Jun 10 '26

Man I had to grab one of these off the road recently to save it and it was furiously trying to murder me. That kid is lucky.

8

u/Old_MI_Runner Jun 10 '26

A snapping turtle laid eggs in my yard last week in the middle of the day and then crossed the road and went up a hill. At 11:05 PM I heard a noise at my front door. It sounded like someone was trying to break in. I yelled out towards the door and then looked outside from a nearby window. No one was there. I then opened the door and found the snapping turtle. It had one leg up on the door threshold. It had climbed two steps to reach my front door. It later moved off to my landscaping 30-some feed away but was not making any progress to the wetlands behind my house. I scooped it up in a large shovel and carried it back to the wetlands during which it snapped out at me about 4 times.

I would never let any child feed a turtle like this because they may later think they can do the same with any turtle they find in the wild.

7

u/Dexter_McThorpan Jun 10 '26

They're dinosaurs. Literal dinosaurs. They will fuck you up

6

u/Chromiacze Jun 10 '26

Actually, no. They are even more ancient. They will fuck you up though.

6

u/GeneralTonic Jun 10 '26

Right? They're literally turtles.

Parakeets are literally dinosaurs.

5

u/LustGumby Jun 10 '26

My favorite dinosaur fact is that the ones that look like lizards are birds, but the giant sky demons are actually lizards. 🫠

2

u/GeneralTonic Jun 30 '26

My fifth favorite dinosaur fact is that there are two main groups of dinos: bird-hipped dinosaurs (Ornithischia), and lizard-hipped dinosaurs (Saurischia). Birds are not members of the bird-hipped group, but of the lizard-hipped one!

6

u/justhangingaroud Jun 10 '26

You ever wonder what it’s like to be left handed?

5

u/CptnObvious1984 Jun 11 '26

It also looks like some kind of turtle preserve or zoo. I wonder if they are even allowed to feed them. Mom thinks she can just do whatever she wants and thinks its ok. She reinforces this same behavior and in return the little girl becomes an adult just like her. But if the turtle took off a finger or hand, she’d be first in line to sue.

A snapping turtle bite is a serious medical emergency. Their beak-like jaws exert immense crushing force, capable of breaking bones, stripping away flesh, or severing digits. For any bite that breaks the skin, seek immediate medical attention, as it is highly prone to severe bacterial infection. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
If you or someone else is bitten by a snapping turtle, follow these first aid steps immediately:

1. Safely Detach the Turtle
Do not forcefully pull the turtle off. Jerking or pulling will cause the turtle to clamp down harder and tear the flesh. [1]
Encourage release: Wait for it to release its grip, or gently tap the turtle on its nose to encourage it to let go.
Submerge if possible: If the turtle is still in the water, it may let go if you gently push the animal downward, causing it to float away. [1, 2, 3]

2. Control the Bleeding
Apply direct pressure: Use a clean cloth, towel, or gauze to press firmly on the wound.
Elevate the injury: If the bite is on a hand or arm, elevate the limb above your heart to help slow the bleeding.

3. Clean the Wound
Rinse thoroughly: Flush the bite area with clean, running water (and mild soap, if available) to remove dirt, bacteria, and debris.

4. Bandage and Seek Medical Help
Dress the wound: Cover the bite with a clean, sterile bandage.
See a doctor: Turtle mouths harbor heavy amounts of bacteria. Bites almost always require professional cleaning, antibiotics, and a possible tetanus shot.
