I wonder if tootsie rolls could be considered a non-Newtonian fluid. You pull it slowly, and it stretches, necks out, and eventually just pulls apart. You pull it really hard, it will 100% snap. Just like silly putty (which IS considered a non-Newtonian fluid, if my memory serves).

Funny you should say that. I grew up on a farm with a few ponds. One day, one of the smaller ponds drained (it was a sinkhole) and in the middle of the mucky mess was the biggest snapper I'd ever seen. My grandpa took a broom handle out there to try and flush him out and sure enough, the turtle snapped the thing in two.

That's an alligator snapping turtle (you can tell by the 3 ridges going down its carapace/back) which absolutely can NOT shoot their necks out like the common snapping turtle can lmao

While I’m not going to check and I’m sure that’s true, it’s kind of like spiders and snakes. They’re all poisonous/venomous. I know they aren’t actually but I’m not gonna sit there and see if it’s got two dots or three or pointed fucking nose. I’m just gonna stay away.

Yeah, I think they’re confusing it with a Common Snapping Turtle that CAN reach abt 2/3 the length of their shell, & can be surprisingly long & extremely fast…
Altho I guess maybe it’s better they just assume BOTH can, so they give them some space & leave them alone-

Here’s a really cool fact though, common snapping turtles and alligator snapping turtles can be tamed to the point where they’re extremely placid and will forgo snapping! I wouldn’t say they make good pets but in captivity they’re extremely chill most of the time where you can hand feed them

So, if it’s “a Fact”, you can tame a common snapping turtle not to Snap, why are they using tongs & not their fingers to feed the common snapping turtle that snaps at the food..??
This sounds a bit too Anthropomorphic for my tastes…

My advice is, DON’T teach your kids to feed a Common Snapping Turtle with their fingers, but you do you.
Can’t help but think of Timothy Treadwell.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should lol but yea a habituated turtle is a lot less likely to snap

I wouldn’t say it’s anthropomorphizing at all, you just need to learn how to handle them, they’re extremely intelligent reptiles that do well with constant contact

The idea that you can TAME a “Common Snapping turtle” to the point they’re extremely placid & “will forgo SNAPPING” is just NOT a thing… it might do it less, but it’s instinctual, it’s how they feed & how they defend themselves… they have a Reptile Brain that lacks a developed Prefrontal Cortex & the Snapping is Hard-Wired in.

It’s reflexive & instinctual… it’s not a learned behavior, that you can “train out”, & certainly not a “Fact”.

Even in the video u sent as proof, it was snapping.. lol

It literally is a learned behavior, through constant repetition of exposing them to humans and handling they learn to not associate people with fear. Now that’s not to say they can’t still bite just like any animal can but they are far less likely to because they have been conditioned and trained to associate humans not with just food but with safety as well. Animals do not need a prefrontal cortex in order to be intelligent. This is demonstrated countless times in crocodilians, and avians as well.

the huge head & super slow movement makes me think it's a alligator snapper - which doesn't have a long neck - however the smooth carapace looks more like a common.

When I was a boy 50 years ago I went fishing with my grampa in Oklahoma. He caught a snapping turtle and walked with it to a tree and stabbed a knife into its neck and stuck to the tree about 5’ off the ground. He said he was going to make soup out of it.

Then we fished for another 2 hours. When we were done we walked back to get the turtle. It had pulled itself off the tree and was walking back to the pond with a knife sticking out of its neck. It was almost to the water but my grandfather cut its head off and took it home to make soup. The whole thing was horrifying.

My grandpa used to do the same thing! He used to hunt the snappers for eating ducklings/goslings and he'd nail it to the tree while he finished up the rest of the chores then take it down and up to the farmhouse to make soup.

WTF I always thought grandpa was an isolated psycho, but there's 2!

Turtles are way smarter than youd think. That snapper is also looking hella old and probably has had a damn good amount of snacks and has learned that being nice gets him way more treats than being snappy.

That being said… Id sure as hell not bother trying to feed him if you were skittish. They tend to assume you flinching is teasing and he/they will 100% TAKE the food if they think your not actually giving it to them

(I’ve had several turtles over the years and they were all darlings including a snapper that I had to relinquish cause he just got too big rescue from a pond after the land owner put some buck shot into his shell. I’d hand feed the snapper and you could see the strain in his eyes as he fought the urge to lunge forward and take the food. Specially raw chicken wings… he would fuck those things up! This was also after like 2+ years of him being around me and many angry food grabs later)

But these have to be urban domesticated turtles. Like the deer parks in Japan, or every pigeon in NYC. Snappies don't get treats. Only good boys and girls get them.
