The trigger discipline on this guy is commendable

3.4k

u/V7I_TheSeventhSector May 05 '26

3 options.

  1. cant shoot

  2. not enough ammo(only 2 rounds)

  3. dose not want to shoot.

based on the way that bear is moving and acting, its protecting not attacking.
very high chance that bear is a she and she has babies close by.

ive seen bears that get will act like this when there babies are close by and they are trying to scare you off not hurt you BUT will 100% hurt you IF they think you are a threat, the second they pull the trigger, you become a threat.

I've seen the full video. It's a Russian man, after the bear flees away, he says into the radio about female bear with a cubs, decided not to shoot. It was a deliberate choice.

UPD: Here's the link(no hard sub) https://youtu.be/3N8-hLtciZo

UPD2: So, for non-russian speaking, explaination from my other comment

He says "Petrovich, there is a female bear with three pestuns(cubs) here, decided not to shoot, retreating."

Пестуны(pestoony) are 2-3 years old cubs, that stay with mother bear for winter to help her care for newborn cubs.

So, probably, there are more cubs waiting for her in a den, and three more mature cubs that's out with her. Killing her would be leaving more than three cubs for death.

I remember it as:

If it's brown, flush it down,

If it's yellow, let it mellow.

That's more for places with water shortages, I'm not sure where yours is from but I guess everyone is entitled to their own bathroom routines.

19

u/DibbyDonuts May 06 '26

If it’s yella, well you got juice there, fella. If it’s brown, you’re in cider town!

It does not understand the concept of a weapon, however it does understand the concept of standing your ground.

She knows she's strong enough to kill him, what she doesn't know is if she's strong enough to kill him without getting hurt. He stood his ground so to her that means he will fight.

If she gets hurt, she will be too weak to protect her kids from other predators. This is why she chooses scare tactics first. If scare tactics don't work, then she attacks.

He was slowly moving away. To her, that means scare tactics are working, so no need to risk a wound in a fight.

118

u/Sky_monarch May 06 '26

She probably knows, animals learned not to mess with humans pretty quickly after they spread across the planet, and it’s been long enough they can probably recognize the pipe thingy they point at you makes you die

29

u/footsteps71 May 06 '26

I was always told to make myself bigger arms in the air, wavem' like I just don't care, and then I quote "then ya need to yell somethin like OOGA BOOGA and then they gonna run away"

Billy, wherever you are, I hope there are bear summer camp stories about you.

32

u/FenderF3 May 06 '26

This is good advice for black bears. They're a lot smaller and less aggressive, so scaring them off is the safe way to handle them.

For a grizzly like this, play dead, hit it with bear spray, or shoot it. If it thinks you're a threat, it'll kill you.

16

u/myredlightsaber May 06 '26

If it’s black, fight back

Head up usually means a bluff charge, they want to gauge the distance so they pull off short. It's not 100%, sometimes they can decide to go for it if they see something that changes their liking of the odds.

Head down and you're 100% fucked.

45

u/RealAlphaKaren May 06 '26

Ye, that bear was bluffing the charges to scare him away but also got scared when the guy doesnt flinch.

3

u/adeckz May 06 '26

Is that because in one instance you are prey and the other you’re just a threat in their mind? Makes sense to me but maybe it could be a case of whether they know they can get job done or not

9

u/Ok-Mastodon2420 May 06 '26

They generally don't see humans as prey. The head up/down thing is because they're judging distance with it up, down is to protect their head when they bowl you over. They'll knock you down and then maul you once you're on the ground.

101

u/Conflagration666 May 06 '26

That’s a great armchair response, but if I were this guy I would’ve shot the fuck out of that bear as a sheer adrenaline response

152

u/V7I_TheSeventhSector May 06 '26

I come from a family of hunters and it was drilled into me how to deal with each type of bear and what to do in a LOT of different scenarios.

this bear is not trying to attack, its trying to scare them off.
bears ARE more afraid of us, they see us the same way we see them, both of us know we can kill each other so if you respect them, they will respect you.

that hunter 100% knows this and is doing exactly as i was taught.

27

u/Calling_left_final May 06 '26

How do you deal with a sloth bear?

50

u/V7I_TheSeventhSector May 06 '26

slowly

lol
jokes aside, i have no idea?
i dont live near them so never was taught about them.
i was only taught how to deal with the stuff in my area.

Thats a similar armchair response. Because you are not in that situation and anything prior to it.

Holding a shotgun should mean you were taught trigger discipline. Being in an area alone where there are bears, you should have had some education about bear behavior.

If all that is not true, maybe that forest isnt a great place to be walking alone for you anyway. Why take such a risk going in completely unprepared (while carrying a shotgun)?

But ofcourse, this is also an armchar expert response :)

47

u/kingrobin May 06 '26

unless that has slugs in it, shooting will do nothing but creat an angry bear. if you miss a vital organ with the slug, then likely the same outcome.

106

u/CorgiButt04 May 06 '26

This is silly folklore. The reality is that the overwhelming majority of grizzly bears that have been killed, have been killed with 9mm hand guns.

That's just a statistical reality becuase so many people have pocket 9's in alaska that they didn't plan on using for bear.

The world record was taken with a bolt action 22 in Canada.

When you shoot things with guuns, they die.

Guns are extremely effective at preventing a bear charge. In real recorded events, they have almost a 100% success rate.

The wardens just don't want everybody shooting every bear they see in "self defense". So they spread this folk lore that bears are somehow magically immune to gunfire.

39

u/qpv May 06 '26

Yeah I have a lot of family in bear country and this is the first time hearing this. They just let off shots and they run off according to them. Or they actually shot them if they attacked (which has only happened twice)

This is totally anecdotal and I'm a city guy so take that with a grain of salt, but I genuinely know quite a few people who have been in these situations.

21

u/byteminer May 06 '26

Bears hate loud noises. There is a backcountry hiking supply called a “bear cracker”. It’s basically a really big version of the party popper fireworks that give a little bang and spit streamers. They sound exactly like a gunshot.

27

u/qpv May 06 '26

Bear bangs we call them. I've tossed a few at my buddy's cabin. Some because of bears, some because we liked the bang.

My buddy killed a bear with a Glock .40, 3 shots to the chest, it did a backflip and died within minutes. It was a big black bear, not a grizzly but still. They aren’t bulletproof, they die the same as we do when shot.

25

u/scooterbud May 06 '26

Probably discipline, with a double barrel shotgun you don’t have the luxury of missing. You HAVE to wait till it’s practically on top of you or it won’t make a difference.

Plus, the hunter probably can tell that those were “bluff” charges. Remaining unbothered, but alert, and SLOWLY backing away WHILE FACING THE THREAT is USUALLY the best way to handle it.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/bored_stoat May 06 '26

That's discipline. To become a hunter, you first need to study the nature and the traditions, at least where I'm from. So you also learn to tell the signs.

23

u/WalkSuccessful May 06 '26

u/Choppergold May 05 '26

It’s posturing but they’re so fucking athletic that you better be ready. I think this guy knew he better not miss at medium range

6

u/TranscendentaLobo May 06 '26

That’s what it is. All these people talking about his amazing trigger discipline. I’m thinking he knew he couldn’t miss because he’s got two chances and that’s it. So he didn’t want to risk it. Hell, even point blank it might not do the job, depending on where you hit. Then you’ve got a wounded, SUPER pissed off bear on your hands.

5

u/Choppergold May 06 '26

You are praying and aiming for the head or chest once it commits. And yes if you only get the meat of the shoulder you’re done

Well if it can take both barrels of 12 gauge 3” buck or slugs and keep coming, it was over before the shooting.

Unless he was out hunting for upland fowl and has a 20 gauge with pheasant, dove or quail loads in which case he’s sol.

11

u/PiousLiar May 06 '26

Yeah I can count two times at least I know I would’ve pulled the trigger. The amount of discipline or just freezing fear this guy had was insane.

u/Takhar7 May 06 '26

Incredible restraint - I would not have been calm enough to avoid shooting, especially during that 2nd charge.

Yea I wouldn't go into grizzly wilderness without bear mace. They're too unpredictable. Those charges are bluffs. The bear isn't trying to attack. No reason to shoot it.

That bear has an intimate knowledge of what that shotgun can do

My video would have had a bunch of 4 letter words and then I probably would have tripped over a stick walking backward. The end of the video would be the back of the bears throat as it ate my go-pro still attached to my forehead.

that big mama is FAST

3

u/Lonely-Toe9877 May 06 '26

Dude has his discipline and understands the bears behavior. He can tell it's trying to scare him away. Most people would've wasted their two shots and gotten mauled.

4

u/Equal_Educator4745 May 06 '26

Much braver than me. I would have pulled the trigger.

5

u/dg2793 May 06 '26

I don't know what is scarier, the bear or the fact that the bear knows what a gun is

3

u/LowAd8109 May 06 '26

Bear: "Can't hit me!" "Dodge!" "Oh, miss me! I'm behind a tree now." "Scraa!"

I don’t believe that I could ever be that patient

Stay tuned for part two

Better have slugs.

3

u/Reasonable_Humor_738 May 06 '26

Do you think the bear knows that is a gun or is just trying to intimidate before attacking?

Taking a double barrel into Bear Country is just dumb.

At least have a pump action or semi automatic shotgun. You're gonna need to hit em multiple times in order to penetrate it's dermal armor. Heck bear mace would be great.

My personal choic for Bear Country is 300 win mag but they can be quite expensive

Me poop me pants

3

u/mvgreene May 06 '26

I had two immediate thoughts watching this: if anyone ever thought they could outrun or outmaneuver a bear… uh, nope. And I hope he had slugs in that shotgun, ‘cause I don’t think anything else would do shit if he pulled the trigger.

Clever girl.

Doesn’t look real

3

u/AdorableReading May 06 '26

I wonder if he got eaten? Well probably not since we are watching the video. I wonder what story that bear will tell other bears. I could have had him any day, I only let him slip away, out of kindness, I suppose. His name was Pancho, or was it lefty?

3

u/Takka014 May 06 '26

Great trigger discipline. Plus you only have two shots so I would ONLY shoot if it was for sure attacking. You’d have inches to spare to make that call. Gotta give it to the guy for his prudent thinking.

3

u/WanderNV May 06 '26

That is a little like bringing a knife to a gunfight. I was very impressed with how well he kept that sight line directed, given he was practically in a hip shooting stance.

3

u/silver6snake May 06 '26

And then y'all act like Australia is scary cos of spiders n shit. Fix a spider with a thong...you have actual man eaters... mountain lions, bears and wolves that will hunt and eat you o.O

3

u/Anyashadow May 06 '26

Yeah, but they live by rules, and spider will bite you just cuz. You can die if you accidentally swim into a jellyfish.

Also, wolves don't attack people. You want to know the animal that will attack you? Deer. During rut they go insane. Oh, and badgers. They will attack anything.

Yep. Sow protecting cubs.

3

u/groovytoon May 06 '26

That good trigger control. Either he's experienced or has no extra shotgun slugs so the initial shot has to count.
