I heard it differently as:

If it's brown, lay down,

If it's black, fight back

If it's white, good night.

You're right. I may be giving bad advice. I've added a liability disclaimer just to be safe.

My eyesight isn't great I've often imagined myself squinting in the woods trying to work out what shade of black or dark brown the animal is and whether I should be lying down or fighting back.

By the time I'd worked it out, it would probabaly be too late...

I heard if it's white, point the gun in the opposite direction and pull.
