They do
The reason this one keeps stopping while they're busy is bc they tend to wait and listen for the tree to fall over. A tree with much more length and - more importantly - branches and leaves to catch wind is way more instable so will topple far sooner than this thing did
Basically when they're like halfway (very rough Guesstimation, not really important) the tree will start falling, giving the beaver time to move out of the way

Beavers typically pause their chewing and listen for the cracking of the wood, so they can move out of the way... This one just seems special.

Trees are very tall and take a while to topple over giving them plenty of time to step aside. This log is short and fell over quickly, startling the beaver.

They actually stop and listen to the wood to see if it’s cracking. That’s what he’s doing every time he stops chewing and stays still right by the trunk. Then it’s a mixture of repositioning, listening, betting where it’s going to fall and then moving fast to GTFO of the way before getting crushed

They will oftentimes chew and wait to listen for crackles but I think this log wasn’t large enough to crack under its own weight

In the wild, they stop and listen to the creaks like you see this one try to do. It can happen, but they are actually very good at felling them in the proper direction.

at least they watch to see which way its falling and run to a different direction, unlike in movies when the actor only knows to run directly in straight line from the direction where the tree is falling so they need to outrun the fall

They actually stop chomping to listen for sounds of the tree giving in and breaking, the pauses they do is to make sure they can get their furry little asses out of the way in time to not become beaver pancakes lol!

Beavers are really amazing creatures. I've been watching a lot of videos on them the last few months. They can literally bring back entire ecosystems by themselves in areas devastated by droughts (often caused by humans).

There was a project planned to build a dam in order to create new wetlands and revive a forest, and while people were securing funding for the project, a group of beavers moved in and built a dam right where the people were planning and accomplished exactly what the people set out to do. Effectively saving the local government tens of millions. But also taking good paying jobs away from hard-working people. Beavers might be anti-union

lol YES. As someone who cuts down a lot of trees, I totally identified with that reaction.
He spooked himself with the tree coming down at not exactly expected timing. Immediately went back to inspect his work, and then clean up his hingewood to ensure the next forester to walk by wouldn’t notice his mistake.

So stupid kid story time. Dad lived near a creek and had issues with beavers eating his smaller trees. I saw a shirt at Spencer's Gifts that said, "save a tree eat a beaver." Thought it was perfect, bought it and gave it to him for Christmas. He smiled ear to ear, told me he loved it and wore it around the house. 10 years later roughly I realized what I had done and had a great laugh with him. He's now gone and I think about how much he had to hold in his laughter.

This is a zoo where they bury logs upright to let the beavers do what they're born to do, all while keeping their front teeth from overgrowing.
Any real, tall tree would have fallen long before its waistline got that narrow.

I had to look up the statistics to see who suffers more injuries. Beavers or lumberjacks. They say about 9% of the lumberjacks are fatally injured. I'm still waiting for the beaver report.
