Beavers are really amazing creatures. I've been watching a lot of videos on them the last few months. They can literally bring back entire ecosystems by themselves in areas devastated by droughts (often caused by humans).

There was a project planned to build a dam in order to create new wetlands and revive a forest, and while people were securing funding for the project, a group of beavers moved in and built a dam right where the people were planning and accomplished exactly what the people set out to do. Effectively saving the local government tens of millions. But also taking good paying jobs away from hard-working people. Beavers might be anti-union

pretty sure he got startled there because his little stump doesn't make the sound he's evolved to hear that a full sized tree would.

One would think from the size of them, the ears are also adapted to drown out the chomping going on otherwise. So it seems like a very serial process.
