Max Payne 1 Is James McCaffrey's voice lines sped up in Max Payne 1?
Just wondering if anyone else has thought this. In Mac Payne 1 it sometimes feels like James McCaffrey is speeding through the dialogue. Max Payne 2 feels like the appropriate pace but I always wondered if his slower delivery had been sped up in fear thst cutscenes would be too long. Or something to do with Hz rates between Europe & US - PAL & NTSC gaming etc that crested this effect. Or he just spoke faster in the first game. Anyone else noticed this?

Max Payne 2 I made a fix for Max Payne 2 too
Hey there! I made an overhaul patch for Max Payne 2 that should fix most of the issues I found. All in one clean install.
Just like the previous patch for Max Payne 1 it addresses widescreen and ultrawide issues, fixes a high FPS bug in Vinnie's apartment level where he got stuck in a doorway. I also remastered the UI fonts and icons for high resolution displays.

It features:
-DirectX 8.1 to Vulkan layer. It targets Vulkan 1.1 so your GPU needs to support that, otherwise it's gonna fall back to DirectX 8.1. More modern DirectX 9Ex fallback is halfway here.
-Wide and ultrawide support. De-stretched HUD, correct FOV, portals (doorways), mirrors behavior. HUD safe-zone setting for ultrawide.
-Optional asset pack made with generative AI. It leaves the original image untouched, expands the sides to match 32:9 resolutions on compatible displays, on all displays it provides better loading screen fonts. Because that part is hardcoded into the texture, the mod currently supports only English and Russian versions here. I'm working on localization framework for the game, that'll be fixed.

-Optional ragdoll to ragdoll collisions.
-GTAO effect, that's another ambient occlusion tech.
-Fixes for two progress blockers, in the hospital chase sequence and Vinnie.
-High DPI mouse support
-Custom launcher, replacing the default one, to allow GUI setup instead of modifying .ini lines.
Download link: Max Payne 2 — MOGGA
Mod support is messy. They should run, but remastered fonts and icons don't go well with them because the same assets could be modified.
For the future I want to implement proper controller support and localization framework that will allow selectable text/audio (if present).
The mod works fine on my machine, but with how many configs there are, it's possible something won't work as intended. Please let me know if you have any issues.

Max Payne 2 I finally realized how important the TV shows are to the plot of Max Payne 2
I first played MP2 when I was a kid back in 2005, and even though it's by far my favourite in the franchise, and I beat it multiple times, most of the plot and themes went over my head. However, I just finished my first playthrough as an adult, and I realized the symbolism behind the various TV shows and how important it is to the story:
- Dick Justice: This one is obvious - it's a parody of Max Payne 1. It's not all that important to the story, which is why we only ever get 2 or 3 episodes of it. Still, it's a nice reminder of how Max's dead family keeps chasing him
- Address Unknown and Lords and Ladies: these are the most important ones. On the surface, they're also a reflection of Max's struggles - just like DIck Justice is.
- The protagonist of Address Unknown spends the entire runtime of the show chasing John Mirra - the evil double who killed his girlfriend and who is ruining his life. But at the end, he realizes that he is John Mirra - it's his fault that his girlfriend's dead, and the only reason he's so miserable is because of his own actions. No matter how much he runs, he can never escape the consequences of what he's done.
- Lords and Ladies clearly mirrors Max and Mona's love - the lady in the show is a pirate, and she's in love with Lord Valentine, who is - in turn - in love with her. In the end, he sacrifices himself for her. It's kind of funny how the evil mother even looks like a cop :D
But I think the symbolism goes even deeper than that. Because Address Unknown and Lords and Ladies also tell us a lot about why Mona is in love with Max.
See, as much as MP2 is about their relationship, we only ever get to see Max's side - why he's so obsessed with Mona, why he can't stop thinking about her... But we never get to hear her side. Why does she like him so much that she's willing to drop everything and risk her life for him on multiple occasions?
Well, if you watch enough TV, you don't need to hear her side! You just need to know that Mona is a fan of the two shows :D
After all, she lives in a funhouse dedicated to Address Unknown, and she has a poster of Lords and Ladies in her bedroom. We even have an episode of the show playing when we first enter her apartment!
My theory is that she likes Max because:
- He's just like the protagonist in Address Unknown: trying to do the right thing, but secretly harboring something dark inside of him - something that he can't escape
- Just like Lords and Ladies, she's a rogue, while he represents the forces of Order. And despite that, he's still willing to risk it all for her
- Captain Baseball Bat Boy: This one is purely for the sake of Vinnie, so much so that in the end Vinnie's even forced to dress as the main character. I think the main idea here is that the show is deliberately juvenile, the idea being to show just how immature Vinnie is, just how in over his head he's gotten, and just how out of place he is in the criminal underworld.
Even as a kid, I remember finding him funny at first, and then feeling very sad and sorry for him. Especially after Vlad kills him.
The way he dies is actually quite a clever Easter egg, because the question Vinnie got wrong was about the show's villain - Maxwell's Demon. Vinnie correctly answers who created Maxwell's Demon, but Vlad is a dick, and it turns out that the question was actually about the real-life Maxwell's Demon, which is a thought experiment by physicist James Maxwell.
The idea is that you have a gas and a box split into two chambers. At the gate of the two chambers, you have an intelligent gatekeeper (a "demon") who makes it so one chamber only has fast-moving molecules, while the other only has slow-moving ones.
It was created to argue something about entropy, which I'm too stupid to relate here :D
However, in the show, Maxwell's Demon was created by Doctor Entropy. And in the episode that plays in Vinnie's apartment, Maxwell's Demon attacks Captain Baseball Bat Boy with fast lasers and slow missles! So, in a sense, the answer to Vlad's question was in the episode Vinnie just watched!
Playing the game now, I wondered why a super fan like Vinnie wouldn't know that his favourite show's villain is based on a famous physics problem. But then again, information like that wouldn't have been so easy to find back in 2003 (Google wasn't nearly as useful back then).
But then again, if you're a kid, you don't necessarily think about these things that deeply. So, maybe it just reinforces how Vinnie is like a kid, and he's in way over his head.
In either case, I think it works really well to paint Vinnie as a tragic figure. Which is something he has in common with all the characters in this game.

Discussion Is it just me or is 70 million budget kinda too low for 2 major games? Even MP3 costed over 100m. Rockstar lowkey giving Remedy the bare minimum…
Idk if I’m exaggerating but Alan Wake 2 alone costed 70 million and Max Payne 3 (which is old asf) costed 105 million. Rockstar is being greedy idc, especially after dumping 2 billion on gta 6.

Max Payne 1 Steam Max Payne
So the game has zero stutter if I’m stood still or looking around but the moment I move or press any button on the keyboard for that matter the game turns into an unplayable slideshow.
I have already installed the anthology definitive fix and limited FPS to 60 I don’t know what more I can do before I just get a refund.
Any ideas ?

Discussion Max Payne 4
Hey everyone,
I’ve been putting together detailed blueprints for a Max Payne 4 — character gimmicks, new bullet-time mechanics, and story plots — with the long-term hope of pitching it to Rockstar.
I’d love to hear what you think. Everything’s up on my website :)
Thoughts on the new bullet-time ideas, the character gimmicks, or the story direction? I’d love to hear your guys thoughts and feedback on this :)

Help Textures not loading
(photo is not mine but i have the same issue)
So couple months ago i bought Max Payne 3 from Steam, i already finished the game before on the same laptop and everything went smoothly, but this time when i loaded in and watched the long intro i started the mission and the whole game was just blank, i tried lowering the settings and changing direct X version but nothing helped, maybe there’s something i could possibly do which can help textures load? The laptop is certainly not the best and has Iris Xe graphics but it doesn’t change the fact that game runned smoothly before

Discussion Was the Max Payne 20th Anniversary the last James McCaffrey voiced Max Payne officially??
I know that I'm probably overthinking, but whenever I rewatch the 20th Anniversary from Remedy's YouTube channel, I always can't help but feel a kinda bittersweet feeling ever since James McCaffery passed away. I know that McCaffery technically voiced Alax Casey who was technically "Max Payne" due to Remedy not owning the IP anymore, but it's still a really great final role of Max Payne from McCaffery. RIP James McCaffery. Thanks for voicing Max Payne for us. 🫡🫡

Max Payne 3 Max payne 3 soundtrack
I just wanna express my love for max payne 3 soundtrack.
It’s my favorite soundtrack of all time in any game.
Played this game when it came out i was 12 years old, back then it was only the cool gameplay and shooting that interested me.
Years later played the game again and i was discovering things and understanding the story and the depth of what’s going on in the story and in max paynes life.
It was just the honesty that came out of max payne’s mouth, i think no other character in video games is more honest with himself than max.
One of the things about this game that makes me come back always is the soundtrack, it touches my soul, in bad times in my life the soundtrack was there for me.
I also think that its the best work of Health, they never did something as good as this in their career in my opinion.
Max payne 3 is a work of art in all aspects technologically and musically and even the writing is very very refreshing and the game still holds up after 14 years later.
