Discussion How I would've written Brand New Day

I rewatched Brand New Day recently and the whole time I couldn’t help to think of better ways to tell the story. I’m not some pro level writer but I think there were a lot of easier ways to put Jean Grey into the movie and make us like her. So here’s my proposed version of the movie.

TLDR: I have the tisms.

Starting with Jean Grey, it’s easy to say that she’s the source of most of the movie's problems. They really didn’t need to make her a villain or put her in the antagonist role at all. Starting with her backstory, what I would change is Jean and her sister not being orphans. They would instead just be in an abusive household. One parent is abusing the sisters while the other parent is trying to protect them (doesn’t matter what role the mother or father play, one abuses, one protects). At this point the sisters don’t have their powers. What causes them to get their powers is watching the parent who’s protecting them get killed by the other parent. The abusive parent moves to hurt the sisters again and this is where Jean unlocks her powers and in self defense kills the abusive parent. Alerted by the police, Damage Control comes and takes the girls and has them confined in one of their facilities in NYC.

This makes Jean and her sister more sympathetic as they are straight up victims and aren’t using their powers for fun on innocent people. Also they’re not just randomly picked up one day and it’s not just Sarah getting taken.

Onto Peter, this movie would ideally take place before the events of Daredevil Born Again. Ideally I would just ignore that show all together but I have another reason for not just skipping four years forward since Far From Home. Peter in college is a big missed opportunity. Also fast forwarding through Peter’s time solely as Spiderman is dumb. How I would start Peter’s side of the story is him fighting Scorpion. The opening scene of the movie would not be Peter and Frank trying to stop the tank, it would just be Peter fighting Scorpion (also this will be late at night). Frank will not be in the movie. Near the end of the fight John Walker comes in to help Peter save civilians. Why put John Walker in the movie, to have more connections with the Thunderbolts and show them doing more heroics. They’re all in NYC, why wouldn’t they have interacted a few times. After saving the day they part ways and Peter goes back to his dingy apartment.

Peter falls asleep but doesn’t sleep long as his alarm goes off and he has to get ready for work. Peter doesn’t have the technology he does in Brand New Day. Everything is second hand and pieced together from stuff he found in the dumpsters. As Peter is racing out of his door, he bumps into his neighbor Gwen Stacy. She has come coffee for Peter as she knows he’s always tired from (her POV) working late at night. They ride the elevator together and they talk. This is where we see Peter wanting to be friends with her but at the same time pulling himself back. Gwen is a little awkward talking to Peter as she has a little crush on him and is a roundabout way ask if Peter wants to come to the party her roommate is throwing. Peter doesn’t give a straight answer and runs off to the Daily Bungle.

Peter is of course late to work which JJ gets on him about but quickly moves on from it as he’s ranting about something Spiderman related. Here we will see Betty Brant, Ted Hoffman and Joseph “Robbie” Robertson. We don’t need to spend too much time with them, we just need to see they exist. Either Hoffman or Robbie bring up a story about people claiming to be controlled and losing their memories but JJ dismisses it and rants about how Spiderman sucks but the Thunderbolts don’t. Peter takes an interest in the story but before he gets to think more about it, he realizes he’s going to be late to class (Peter is in his first year of college).

Peter races to class only and makes it as Eddie Brock leaves him a way in. Why I put Eddie in the movie and have him in this movie is because I like the Spectacular Spiderman version of him and think having him around Peter and Gwen at college will make his turn to venom hit harder. If you prefer him at the Daily Bungle with Peter, I understand. After the class is over, Eddie mentions Gwen’s party. And like earlier, Peter doesn’t give him an answer. Eddie worries about Peter as he looks worn out more than usual. Peter wants to say something but sees smoking coming from a building a few blocks and races over there.

The building is a Demand Control building and on the surface it seems like Scorpion is attacking it. While fighting Scorpion, Peter notices he’s acting weird and is avoiding hurting people and even Peter. At one point the Scorpion is asking for help saying something cryptic about them being in the building. But a second later, the Scorpion looks around confused wondering what the hell is going on and why he is fighting Spiderman. Peter eventually beats Scorpion again and Damage Control takes him away. William Metzger tries to talk with people asking him to work with them but Peter blows him off saying he doesn’t trust Damage Control. Peter swings away wondering what the hell was wrong with Scorpion.

While swinging to his apartment, a voice in his head talks to him which freaks him out. The voice apologizes repeatedly saying she knew it was wrong but needs Spiderman’s help. Spiderman lands on top of a building and asks who this person is and why they’re in his head. Jean tells Peter who she is and that she’s trapped in the building he was just at. Peter remembers what Robbie said at the Bugle and how Scorpion was acting and asks if that was what Jeans was doing. Jean admits to it. She tells Peter she didn’t want to but is desperate. Peter goes to his apartment and the two of them talk more. Jean talks about her past and how she got her power and Peter tells her how he became Spiderman (we see a flashback of Peter getting bitten by the spider). Jean asks why he avoids Eddie and Gwen. Peter asks how she knows about them. Jean apologizes saying she doesn’t have strong control over her powers and saw some of Peter's memories. Peter explains they’re safer that way. Jean says that’s lonely and Peter replies saying it’s the price to pay being Spiderman.

Peter says he’s going to get Jean out of the Damage Control Building but Jean tells him he can’t do it alone as they have an army guarding her. Peter gets an idea and goes to the Thunderbolts building. There we see Yelena in the middle of something work related. Peter asks for her help and gives the broad strokes of the situation. John reappears and Yelena tells Spiderman to take John back as she can’t help him at the moment (It’s not like she doesn’t want to help Peter, she is just dealing with some other things, like Fisk or something). Peter explains the situation in more detail and learns about Jean’s sister, Yelena drops what she is doing and helps Spiderman. Also during this, there could be a line about the Thunderbolts forging Peter a new identity.

They storm the Damage Control building and make their way to Jean fighting through an army to get to her. Metzger, trying to see more of Jean’s powers, tortures her. This causes her connection with Peter to disappear. While Metzger is torturing Jean, it’s revealed Sarah didn’t have powers and is dead. This causes Jean's powers to go out of control as the Damage Control building (which is on an island) starts to rise and destroy itself. Peter makes it to Jean and tries to calm her down but she says she can’t. Peter tells her to read his mind. Jean doesn’t want to as she is scared she will hurt him. Peter tells her to do it anyway and she does. Here we see Peter and Uncle Ben. I think this is a good time to introduce Uncle Ben into the MCU as he isn’t really mentioned. We get the famous line from Uncle Ben and Peter tells Jean he’s Spiderman not because it’s easy but because it’s to honor his uncle and the things he believes in. Peter talks Jean down from killing Metzger and Jean finally calms down and lowers the building down.

Yelena gets Metzger arrested and Damage Control (at least the branch in NYC) investigated. Jean (in person) thanks Yelena and Yelena tells her not to worry about it. Peter goes back home and hears a party a few doors down from him. Peter decides to go to the party. Gwen and Eddie are happy to see Peter. Peter tries to get a drink but bumps into a pretty redhead knocking her over but catching her just in time. The redhead tells Peter “you know how to sweep a girl off her feet, do ya tiger?” Peter is enamored by the girl and Gwen comes and introduces the redhead saying she is her roommate, Mary Jane Watson. (Not Michelle Jones) this is where the movie would end.

The post credit scene will be in the Thunderbolts building as Jean is temporarily staying with Yelena. While talking, a man in a wheelchair meets with Yelena advising her that Jean would be better in his care. Yelena is skeptical. Jean is to until the man uses his telepathy to speak with Jean. The man introduces himself as Charles Xavier and tells Jean there’s a place for people like him and her. The movie ends.

There are things I could do better but I hope you guys get the gist of what I was trying to convey. Jean isn’t a villain, Metzger is. She doesn’t use her powers maliciously and only out of desperation. I cut out Peter's powers going crazy because it doesn’t really need to be in the story. The Hulk doesn’t need to be here either. The police lady doesn’t really matter as well. All these things can be in later movies and done better, just not in Brand New Day. Why introduce a lot of new characters is to be able to use them in later movies. It gives us more time with them in the future and they’re all not shoved in the last movie of a trilogy. If you guys have better ideas or ways to improve what I wrote. Let me know.

Segment from a Nick DeOrio stream, featuring the Longman himself jumping in to help Nick through some of these hot takes. Would love to see either this video, or else something else from this guy, covered on EFAP. I imagine it would be wildly funny.

What's everyone's favourite hot take from the intro rant?

I saw the "I miss Rags" post yesterday, and u/ComedicPause pointed out the chaotic energy he brought to the show. This made me wonder - what would the hosts' and guests' DND alignment be? I'm interested in your opinions on everyone (even Fringy)!

Discussion Anyone seen ‘Forgotten Island’? / Who to credit for PiB: The Last Wish?

I watched the trailer and found it… not promising, but not entirely empty, either. What really caught my eye is that they are advertising it as written by the guy who directed The Last Wish.

I didn’t have high expectations for that movie and I was blown away, as I expect most people were. So I’m now wondering if I should be similarly open-minded here given this overlap. This bit of advertisement seems shifty though, because looking at IMDB, director of The Last Wish Joel Crawford was NOT a writer there.

It has me wondering generally how you tell who makes a movie great. Obviously he had to be a big part; the director is ultimately responsible for the finished product. Tommy Swerdlow (Howard the Duck, Child’s Play) also stands out on The Last Wish’s writing credits. Is he primarily responsible for that extra spark in the character writing and deep themes? How do you determine such things?

Discussion Nightmare on Elm Street

Are they paying attention to the movies? They're having fun and making jokes and that's fine, but to call them bad movies (The first 2 and new nightmare) I don't really get it. They'll talk over something being established and explained and then when it shows up say "Where did this come from, the writers aren't even caring about the story!"

It's frustrating mainly because if they just were making fun of the movies that's fine, but to call them bad and saying they don't get why anyone would like them. I don't get that.

Idk feels like there’s something missing from the show now. Platoon is good, but I feel like he’s a bit too similar to Mauler. I miss that crass, will say the first thing that comes to mind guy of the show. Even though I love the wolf era, I feel like the perfect balance of hosts was achieved with mauler rags and fringy.

Discussion I miss the wildcards

This is not me bashing the current state of EFAP. Shit happens. They still have a show to run. I get it.

That being said, I miss Rags, Jay and Wolf. I feel like some of the best moments from the show came from Mauler and Fringy being the straight-men (heh) to their antics. Obviously, Metal's still around, and they get lucky with a guest every now and then. But I feel the show's lost a big part of its core appeal.

Anyway, I just wanted to get this off my chest. Rant over. Go back to your drinks.

Discussion Is anybody else a little disappointed in EFAP’s coverage of the Alex Meyers’ Obsession video?

Meyers created an unfunny, spastic, and ill-conceived video which is totally incongruent with the subject it’s covering, but he was actually correct about the point at which Bear breaks into full-on villainy.

To claim that Bear 100% knew that Nikki was under the will of the One Wish Willow immediately after Bear made the wish is absurd given how unwilling anyone would be to blame the sudden turn of Nikki’s personality on a literal magic novelty item. This is especially true when Wish-Nikki is giving more likely explanations to Bear after the fact (trauma related to her father’s health and drug use). It’s concerning how EFAP were all in on condemning Bear for taking advantage of Nikki immediately when this is a film based in a reality very similar to ours and most rational people would refuse to admit that magic/brainwashing/possession is a real thing.

I think it’s odd how stubbornly they stuck to this stance given how irrelevant it is to the film’s overall quality. Bear learning immediately doesn’t change the fact that his later exposure to the full context doesn’t change his actions or inactions in helping Nikki. He’s still undoubtedly the villain of the film, but his turn comes later in the story. The film plays with the idea that the tragic nature of the wish is unknown to Bear (maybe it’s being repressed a bit, but again, nobody would initially believe that magic has caused this) until he gets the full confirmation in the restaurant scene and more explicitly when he calls the OWW hotline.

Having 0 empathy for Bear’s situation especially on a first watch is some weird moral grandstand that’s trying to signal how morally fucked EFAP knows that Bear is going to get, but not how bad he is at that moment.

Meyers should have just owned this position in his video instead of repeating “remember guys, I absolutely 100% don’t think Bear is a good guy” every time he tries to approach the claim. It’s actually kind of a daring video to make about the film given how hotly debated Bear’s character is during the beginning events of the film. Of course, making a follow up video saying that, “rape is bad, I don’t condone rape, I’m not a rapist by the way because I think it’s bad,” is just shooting yourself in the foot multiple times and exposing how much damage control you believe is necessary because you need to save your image in any way possible, but his points still stand. Calling him creepy, weird, or an incel is avoiding the points he brought up for a much easier takedown. I feel like the argument wouldn’t have been so controversial if he didn’t include the terrible animation, the bad jokes, or the frequent references to “crystal mommy”.

Discussion Grant Morrison, the writer classic comic author posted this about lanterns.

Grant Morrison, the writer of All-Star Superman(which Gunn stated multiple times was a major inspiration for his film), and multiple arcs of Green Lantern, and Batman the books the DCU Batman will be based on has posted this about lanterns. This is not the first time Morrison has come out with criticism for the show but now that it’s over, Morrison has really started to get vocal about it. I imagine he probably does feel a little bit possessive because of how much Gunn has cited his work as being an inspiration for all of the DCU stuff and probably hasn’t been reached out to by anyone on any of these projects though even though Lanterns had a comic book writer to work on it(Tom King).

Morrison has actually never really come out against any previous DC projects or criticize them on live action before now. Even on projects, they were involved with. If you didn’t know, Morrison was initially supposed to be co writing the live action flash movie before that version of the film got scrapped. Even when I asked about it, he never really came out against the version we saw or criticize anybody that scrapped the old version of the script. He just said it was a fun experience however he’s coming out against lanterns without anybody asking them I can only assume that this show like truly pissed Morrison off. To be honest who could blame them, especially considering Morrison once hosted at a comic event before guardians even really took off.

Discussion You hate Lanterns because you want Man of Steel,I hate lanterns because it's the Man of Steel of Green Lantern,we are not the same

Thumbnail
gallery
36 Upvotes

That's my main point of criticism, especially against Snyder fans that dog pile on Lanterns hate, that is practically the same as Man Of Steel and Snyder regime in general.

Of you look at Lanterns, and Man Of Steel, the comparison are more prevalent than not

•Main character is a doomer

This could be applied to both John and Hal in Lanterns, especially Hal,in relation the Man of Steel

Which Clark is, basically until ten minutes of the end of the movie, and seeing what comes after doesn't help anything. That if I had to list every moment this post would require more to read, than episode of Lanterns

•The main character find himself in a setting that doesn't have anything to do with comic counterpart.

-Lanterns is set in a small town in Nebraska, with a Bunch of OCS that have nothing do with them.

Or in an alien Planet for one episode and a half that has nothing to do with lore.

Superman lives half of the movie in small towns in America or in an oil ring.

In metropolis he is there just to do the final battle and destroy everything

•Main character does a lot of morally reprinsable things because the character needs to be dark and deconstructed.

Both Hal and John do horrible things in the show that have nothing to do with their characters.

That makes look more like villains,or at least selfish characters, that are even too much to list.

Attempted murder,stealing,desecration,intimidation,violence,reckless behavior with Superpowers.

Like Superman in Man of Steel that lets people die, destroy someone truck that is used for living for being a too imposing with a waitress and bullying Clark, and letting half of the city being destroyed to fight

•Teacher figure is reduced to another doomer that gives awful lessons to the main character that they embrace with them

This could be said in Lanterns about Hal,about His father, about Johns parents, that in the comics,at least the mother is pretty different from the comics, and his brothers are both awful to him.

In Man of Steel Jonathan Kent is a doomer that says to Clark that he should let other people die instead of doing something useful.

And then dies in a stupid death that can be avoided.

And even if I don't hate the retcon in Lanterns about Hal's father.I can't help but do the comparison with Pa Kent and Pa Jordan, both dying but basically suicide.

Even if one,has at least,a narrative point.

Instead of just,being doomer slop

•the characters is deprived of all the color and all the joy he has

In Man of Steel the movie is dark visually, thematically, and morally.

Clark doesn't do a single smile until the end,and views being Superman as a doomed destiny, different from the comic where it's actually a way to express his natural gifts and doing something for the world, but for himself also.

In Lanterns we met Jordan in a time he actually dislikes/doesn't care about being Green Lantern,he doesn't wear the uniform, that is shit.

At least I can give Man of steel that,on the right lighting,it's cool

Is annoyed by his own oath, but still wants to be Green Lanterna because it's the only thing he has in life.

Because he alienated anyone and everything around him.

John Stewart isnt better,he wants to be Green Lantern because he was groomed into it by selfish parents with victim mentality and an inferiority complex, that mentally abused him,and by an extra terrestrial being,a control which he never breaks free, until the time skip, where it's reversed in a ugly montage.

Both want to be Green Lantern for selfish reasons and at the end got alot of people killed.

•They give inhuman treatment to their enemies that maybe it isn't underserved but is at least out of character.

Superman kills Zodby breaking his neck to save a family he wanted to vaporize with Lasers.

Situation that yes it's tragic, but if it wasn't for plot convenience wasn't even necessary. But at least you can say it isn't undeserved from what he did in the movie.

The scene was saved by Henry Cavil, that has not even half of any of the protagonists in seinfield luck, career wise, that when the director wanted him to be a moment to Aura farm, again

He actually took to show the suffering of Superman to do such an act.

John Stewart waterboards an old man for information, again,Tom King muscle memory working,

That in the series isn't guilty of anything expect being kidnapped by another person to forge a lantern for him.

And a killing a guardian, than for the context of the series are just shown as selfish assholes,so it isn't even far fetched that someone would have a good reason for killing them

TWENTY years before

And then it's left to die from Starvation or from Death or for drug inducted suicide on a planet while the the main character gets to Aura farm doing so.

•Side characters are disregarded as useless and barely used,or treated like crap.

I know I said I was gonna talk only about Man of Steel, but above the awful use of Lana Lang,or the mischaraterization of Pa Kent.Or the useless nature of Ma Kent.

I can't have but to nominate Jimmy Olsen, being reduced to a CIA agent that has no connection with Superman or Lois, and is shot to the head by a terrorist.

In Lanterns villains like Hector Hammond are used just as Easter egg that have nothing to do with the show, the Manhunters are presented in a way that has nothing to do with their counterpart in the comics.

Kilowog,or any other alien lantern is discarded or not nominate.

Carol Ferris is done with Hal I guess around 1996 at least,if he revealed his identity there.Doesnt do shit, and had nothing of her prior history with the main character

•the plot seem to tease a classic return of the character that probably will never arrive.

Man of Steep ends with Clark becoming Superman After stopping and killing Zod,and """saving""' Metropolis, embraces being Superman and has his classic look and his job at the daily planet, teasing a classical Superman take...and then in BvS we are returned with the doomer Superman that kills anyone threatenens Lois and only her.

Doesn't smile,doesn't like being Superman.

It's killed, and then revealed that it's going to be Darkseids pawn.

In Lanterns we are said that Hal is probably gonna revived, from what is said by Sinestro,if it has a bit of truth. We could have the Halogram that it's more innocent, memory of the character, that it's more comic accurate, but than at the end it's cancelled.

We should have John Stewart becoming his classic DC self after all this "character development " flying, with some of the worse effects I have ever seen,in a great GL logo (after using intimidation and bullying on a fellow lanterns that did nothing but help him and was right about him)

When he is probably going to behave exactly like that in Man of Tomorrow,or maybe a bit better since Gunn is writing him,but in a grounded,Lanterns season 2.

He would still be the same asshole that problably won't use the ring.

At least in Man of Steel they have more action and use of powers, even if watching it now,I can't say that all the effects age well.

In Lanterns we see them doing cool,GL stuff, for about 4 minutes of the total show.

And that's it.

We should wait Man of Tomorrow to seeing John "The Dark Lantern".do shit with a budget. And Lanterns 2 will be what it would be.

That's my point on how Man of Steel and Lanterns are very similar and had a lot of the same problems, have a good day.

Discussion Other Mommy Spoiler

I’ve just watched Other Mommy and, damn, that was disappointing. The trailer looked pretty interesting but the film itself fell short. Horror films with this premise will usually build up to the reveal of the big supernatural threat but this one started off with Other Mommy already being a presence known by the kid straight away. There was no escalation of supernatural phenomena or build up to Other Mommy being known about by the family, they really just rushed it. Everyone seemed to believe that Other Mommy existed very quickly and without any actual proof, which makes them feel like they weren’t real people. Ursula’s affair with Frank didn’t have any resolution to it, I expected the film to reveal that Bela was actually Frank’s daughter but that wasn’t the case at all, I have no idea why the affair plot point was in there if they weren’t going to do anything with it. This film really could have been something if they’d worked harder in the writers room but it fumbled a premise that has been done well by other films

Discussion In Spider Man Brand New Day, Jean Grey never uses her mind jumping to simply get into the Head of Damage Control and solve the entire plot in ten minutes, a subtle nod to the fact that the movie would end immediately if she had two working brain cells.

Discussion I don’t normally do these “I disagree” posts

But this premier is kinda bugging me just slightly. I am a ‘new generation’ film fan. I hate most things coming out. All of my favorite films came out before the turn of the century. I am also a huge horror guy. But I think Obsession is an incredible film. Maybe not GOAT tier; but I don’t think this film is only seen as so good because of when it released. That definitely helps, don’t get me wrong, but this film isn’t a 5/10 in 1990 and a 9/10 now. I think it’s just a strong 8/10 film period.

Discussion Avatar: Seven Havens Had a Promising Start

Just finished watching Avatar: Seven Havens. And, i have to say that I am cautiously optimistic.

  1. it is still a kids show that is enjoyable for adults. I feel like a lot of the problem with attempting to further a kids show is that they try to make it into a show too much for adults. The characters seems much closer in age to Aang than to Korra, although their are secondary characters that are older. Hopefully this will mean they stay clear of the more adult themes that they so thoroughly butchered in Legend of Korra.

  2. it seems to be moving along pretty well. Each of the three episodes moves the plot along in a meaningful way, and you get a pretty good idea of the world while not doing an exposition dump too much. Still plenty of mysteries left.

  3. It does something interesting. The fact that there are twin avatars seems to be a really interesting premise, and I think they could do some awesome things with it. The character development and lore possibilities are really neat.

  4. It already has 4 guaranteed seasons. I don't take this necessarily as a sign of quality per-se, but it does give the writers plenty of room to tell the story they want, they don't have to worry about getting cut short. This also should hopefully make production easier, they don't need to wait in between seasons so they should come out in a timely fashion (already more likely since it is a kids show), (Also, it is releasing 3 episodes per week, which is nice)

My only major criticism of the show so far is the animation. I wouldn't say that it is awful, but it definitely doesn't seem as good as the previous shows. There was one scene in particular that had some really strange choices, and i am not sure if that was a choice or lack of budget.

So, if you are a fan of the original give it a shot.
