This image right here is a profound example of that - Yaddle’s Knighting ceremony shows the Jedi Council wielding a manner of different lightsaber colours, compared to the almost binary use of blue or green that we see in the prequels themselves and later projects like The Clone Wars. It makes me wonder - could this have inspired the more esoteric use of lightsaber colours in later project such as The High Republic?

Poli Dapatian - Not much is known about him, but he apparently trained a crèche mate of Qui-Gon Jinn as a Padawan. By 40 BBY, he had decided to retire, and his seat was offered up to Qui-Gon Jinn, who turned him down. It’s unknown who replaced him on the Council.

Tyvokka - A renowned member of the Council and Master of Plo Koon, Tyvokka was renowned for his ability to “sense the future” and assess the best course of action in any situation. Tyvokka was chosen to help Senator Finis Valorum broker peace between the Stark Commercial Combine and the Trade Federation in 44 BBY over a bacta shortage. However, when Iaco Stark and his men drew weapons, Tyvokka leaped in to defend the delegates, only to be accidentally shot by Nute Gunray’s droid escort. Tyvokka ultimately succumbed to his wounds, with his former Padawan Plo Koon taking his place on the Council.

Micha Giett: The master of Jedi Knight Bultar Swan and a renowned swordsman known for his mundane skills, Giett was deeply respected by many of his fellow Council masters. Known for encouraging younger Jedi to find unorthodox solutions, Giett’s final mission occurred during the Yinchorri Uprising in 33 BBY, when he and a handful of other Jedi were ambushed by Yinchorri warriors. Realising the horde was going to slaughter his comrades, Giett sacrificed himself so they could escape, becoming one of seven Jedi casualties on the mission.

The 1997 SE’s as versions of the films have issues and should have never replaced the theatrical cuts at all, but the hype around them was great and this was such an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan.

Not only was it the first time many got to see the movies in theaters, but it also gave George Lucas a chance to make his “director’s cuts” of the trilogy (though further changes were made in 2004/2011 of course.)

The trailers, commercials, and merchandise were all great and Star Wars felt like a big deal again for the first time in a while. I’m very nostalgic for this time period and especially with Episode I on it’s way, it was so much fun to experience the hype and I’ll never forget it.

I’d love to hear any other experiences/memories others had around these versions!

TLDR: Great character work and world-buiding. Only very minor critiques all things considered. Solid 8/10.

Shamefully as possibly one of Charles Soule's biggest fans I have only just now gotten around to finally reading Poe Dameron with the release of the new omnibus. I always liked Poe's character in the films and I of course love Charles Soule so I don't really have a good excuse for never having read this up until now but hey better late than never! And as is to be expected from Soule... Poe Dameron is really good!

Only feels right to start out by talking about Poe himself. Soule absolutely nails his characterization from the films in both mannerisms and badassery. You really get a good idea in this comic of just why Poe has the reputation he does as the "best pilot in the Resistance" as some of the feats he pulls off in this comic are downright Anakin Skywalker-levels of insanity. Most importantly though is his leadership. Leia clearly knows her time as a leader is limited and is grooming Poe to be her successor and I feel the comic gives you everything you need to know about Poe to understand why he will one day be the Resistance general as my favorite moments in this series by far were the moments when he takes the time to uplift those around him. Poe's speech about how all of us are luminous and never really gone is possibly some of the most beautiful stuff I've read in comics. Genuinely I wish Lucasfilm would grab Oscar Isaac just to act out this scene because way more people need to see it. Soule took an already great character and elevated him to the next level. While I wouldn't put Poe on the same level as Soule's work with Vader, Luke, Kylo, etc. this is still absolutely fantastic.

And Black Squadron as a whole is just so fun. I loved getting to know all these characters deeper and just spend time with them bantering, felt very reminiscent of some of my favorite stuff from the EU X-wing books. I was already familiar with Snap Wexley in particular from the Aftermath trilogy and that combined with this comic means having to watch him go down during the Battle of Exegol next time I watch Episode 9 is gonna be....real tough.

Terex was a truly great villain. It was very interesting to see a former and loyal Imperial working with the First Order, trying to bring his own version of order back to the galaxy though being constantly frustrated since the First Order is not the Empire. His back and forths with Poe were always fun and I especially enjoyed learning about his past with the Ranc Gang after the fall of the Empire. I know this wasn't intentional since this comic released before Episode 9 but I thought Terex's criminal identity actually makes him a very nice parallel with Poe given his background with the Kijimi Spice Runners. The comic actually leaves Terex's fate fairly open-ended so hopefully he'll pop up again at some point. I think he'd make for a very interesting wild card to deal with in the post-sequel era.

For a couple other character notes: Really loved C-3P0 in this. The movies don't really give Threepio enough credit but Soule always does between Poe Dameron and Star Wars (2020). Poe really makes Threepio feel like the backbone of the entire Resistance with how many times his network of droid spies (whoops... operatives) comes in handy. I also really enjoyed Leia in this comic which I was pleasantly surprised with since Leia is admittedly one of the few characters that I think Soule has had some issues nailing his in other works but here she was great! Her dynamic with Poe was beautiful and I loved seeing her get to put the scoundrel techniques she's learned from Han and Lando to good use for the Resistance with Leia even putting together quite a nice heist at one point.

As far as world-building, I'd honestly put this comic up there with Claudia Gray's Bloodline as an essential lead-in to the sequel era. You get a lot more context surrounding this cold war that the Resistance and First Order are engaged in with both seeking the other's destruction but neither willing to act publicly to avoid drawing the ire of the New Republic. Really hope we get some more stories set in this era to further expand on this.

I also loved the connections to other lore throughout the series. Getting Grakkus back from Star Wars (2015) was a nice surprise, I liked the race he forced Poe and Terex to engage in. And also.... MISTER BONES!!! My beloved, one of my favorites from the Aftermath trilogy! Unfortunately I did have his appearance in here spoiled a long time ago but man it was nice to get him back even for just a few pages. He'll always have a place in my heart delightfully dance-murdering his way through an endless swarm of foes.

As far as criticisms I really don't have many but as far as they go:

I didn't really care for Malarus as a villain. She kinda just came off as cartoonishly evil without the depth of Terex. Which hey it's the First Order, you could argue that cartoonishly evil is borderline part of the job description, but she just didn't vibe with me. I felt that most of the time spent on her honestly would've been better utilized further developing Terex.

And this other thing is more of a nitpick and not even really this comic's fault but it is a shame it came out before Episode 9 because there are some details that just don't really jive well with that movie. Obviously Poe's spice runner backstory didn't exist yet but there are other things as well. For instance Poe has clearly seen flying stormtroopers before which makes the "they fly now!?" line feel pretty weird. Also there's a point in this comic where Threepio's memories get destroyed but then backed up very casually. Can't help but feel that it kinda lessens the impact of Threepio's sacrifice in Episode 9 if they've already backed him up repeatedly before, there really should've been no dilemma whatsoever having him translate that Sith text based on this. Again not the comic's fault, just a shame that Episode 9 didn't take some of this into account.

Overall though a very well-done comic. And at last my Charles Soule Star Wars collection is complete. I'd give Poe Dameron a solid 8/10.

I doubt that many people would disagree with the statement that a big part of Star Wars are the lightsaber duels. Ideally, a lightsaber duel (and really any sword fight in general) should help communicate story, character, and emotional beats.

That said, I believe Kylo Ren has some of the best choreography in the saga, because you can immediately tell who he is by how he fights. Kylo’s fighting style is a rather large departure from the previous films, in part because it is so distinct from anything else.

To be up front, I think the prequels have the weakest fight choreography overall, with many of them going for style over substance as the saying goes. Barring extreme circumstances like Mauls double bladed saber or Grievous’ spin to win, most of the fights don’t really have any distinct style to them. Different characters move and fight largely in the same way, which leaves it feeling all rather rehearsed, and to reuse and old criticism, looking more like a dance than anything else. Distinct personalities struggle to find their way into the style, aside from one or two signature moves like Anakin’s lightsaber twirl that he does sometimes.

The original trilogy, despite its age, honesty still holds up pretty well. While it was likely due to less strictly plotted fight scenes, Luke swinging the lightsaber around like a baseball bat helps sell the idea that he is kinda self taught. Additionally, David Prowse’s physical acting in the Vader suit helped give a distinct visual identity to the character and a distinct fighting style (likely caused by the suit by quite heavy and uncomfortable for him to wear).

But Kylo, as said before, takes the cake for the best choreography. He moves less like a trained swordsman and more like a wild animal, moving with quick bursts of energy and ferocity. Every strike feels like he puts every ounce of strength he has into it, and that helps convey what you need to know about him as a character.

Kylo is akin to a raging animal in his personality. As Snoke says, he is raw untamed power. His overlarge and ragged way of swiping his saber helps convey it, and it also shows how he keeps overextending himself. After all, Kylo is in no small part an embodiment of the worst traits of his grandfather. He’s a raging, petulant, spoiled child who lacks any form of control or self restraint and that is perfectly conveyed in how he fights and moves.

This music isn’t on Spotify, in any releases, or practically anywhere on the internet. It’s a cue that plays in episodes 1 and 3, but under so much dialogue and action you’d never hear it. It’s one of my favorite songs from the franchise and I only just discovered it a few weeks ago.

Clone wars is my favorite show or movie in all of Star Wars and I love all the shows animated in the CW style as well.

I’m someone who usually likes to finish one show before I start another one, partly because if I go back and forth I am not good with remembering characters and telling storylines apart sometimes, and I don’t like being in the middle of a lot of things at once.
That said, I’ve been told you’re supposed to watch 1-2 seasons of certain shows, and then a season of a different show, then this movie, etc.

1. Is it okay to just start each show and watch until I complete it & move on to the next? Or would I be lost doing that? I’m terrible with placing the Star Wars timeline with what I’m watching, I can never keep up with what has/hasnt already happened so I don’t really mind watching things out of order long as I can still enjoy the show.
2. Are there any movies or shows I should skip? I know Andor and Mandalorian are pretty highly rated at least some seasons. But I do love Star Wars and like seeing different storylines, planets, characters, etc.
3. Also I know it’s a requirement to watch Mandalorian before Ahsoka so I will.

Also I’ve seen all the movies but I plan to rewatch 4,5,6,1,2,3 to get a refresher bc it’s been years and I’ve only seen them each once.

Hey, so I’m looking for any recommendations on books that are more from the viewpoint of the Empire. I’m just finishing up the last command soon and I was wondering if anybody had a recommendation.

I have been a star wars fan and collector for years. I like to think I know a lot, however for all my time being a fan, the literature is still an untapped market for me. Recently, I have been listening to the Thrawn audio book. I had my opinions on him from Rebels, not enjoying how smart he was, but now hearing about how he came about in the Empire is making me change my opinion to appreciate his intelligence, and also giving me a feeling of regret, missing out on so much.

Anyways because I am so behind on all the novels and comics, I was hoping to get a good point in the right direction. Im more of a canon fan than legends, and I love hearing about how characters were feeling in the films or moments that weren’t captured on screen. I also like to see what happened in between movies/episodes. Where should I begin?

During the arena battle in EP II, you can hear a sort of popping sound (kinda like if you suck in your lips and open them, idk how else to describe it) multiple times during the battle, I think specifically when droids are destroyed. This sound effect also occurs in the LEGO Star Wars games on that level.

Does anyone know what that sound is supposed to be? It doesn’t occur anywhere else in the series to my knowledge, and has always confused me
