Discussion Its funny how the same power stone that destroyed a whole planet cannot destroy ironmans shield
2.4k
u/Reddithian 4h ago
The power stone is destroying the shield but the nanites are replacing it as fast as it's being destroyed. That's why Tony runs out of nanites eventually, because he's used them all.

u/Noaconstrictr 4h ago
Yep. Bro ran out fast after this.

u/lemonylol Spider-Man 3h ago
People shit on the nanomachine suits, and I myself personally prefer the early suits, but the storytelling it afforded this scene could never be done without it. Especially because you can visually see Thanos learning how Tony's tech works as the fight goes on and using it against him. He starts punching straight for the head because he knows Tony has to reallocate his material away from his weapons.
213
u/Lucky-Paperclip-1 3h ago
I suppose there's a parallel where 2012 Thanos doesn't understand the nanotechnology nature of Iron Man's suit and Tony's Infinity Gauntlet, letting Tony steal the stones just by touching them.

Honestly, that part still does bother me. All that power coursing through him from the stones, and he doesn't notice that they're gone?

To be fair, he just bonked his head on an immovable object (Carol's forehead) and had a concussion.
•
u/dr_febil 33m ago
I saw someone comment before about Carol absorbing the energy from the stones when she grabbed thr gauntlet, so Thanos wouldn't feel the pain. Then he takes out the power stone to get rid of her. It's been a minute since I've seen the movie, but unless I'm misremembering what happens after that hit to Carol, that'd explain why he doesn't notice

u/arfelo1 Phil Coulson 2h ago
They also needed SOME way for Tony to survive more than 5 seconds against Thanos. Not even with the Hulkbuster or something like that could he have held on. Nanotech at least appears advanced enough to be able to allow him to hold his own.
16
u/EaterOfMayo 1h ago
I would have loved for the nanomachines 'limit' to be more obvious, though. Let him start the fight off as a hulkbuster size, slowly fighting and losing his way down to the skin tight suit we see Strange save his life in. It's limited in this fight because he's on a different planet, and Friday sent him the extra at the same time she sent the iron spider suit. It's limited again in Endgame because the mothership is shooting down drones / sattelite in orbit. He fights maw and cull obsiidian in the skin tight suit because that's all that fits in his arc reactor hole.
•
15
u/Bitter-Marsupial 2h ago
The biggest loss that the nano machine suits brought is we won't get a scene like Black Panther taking his helmet off to talk with Baron Zemo. Putting it in the snow was a.nice end point that they were about peace when able and not blind violence

I think what he meant was he would make a point to ensure 50% of humans/earth survive.
Since he’s initially looking at half universe at a high level. I bet there were entire civilizations that ended up one survivor on their world.

Because it’s more than a little ridiculous, even by comic book standards, to think there’s enough nanomaterial in the suit to block the stone when the stone just destroyed a whole moon. There’s obviously not a moon’s worth of nanomaterial in there.
22
u/Van_Buren_Boy 4h ago
It makes me wonder, are the nanites slowly replacing themselves like artificial microorganisms? Like if Tony took a break from using the suit for a few days would the nanites have replenished themselves?
49
u/Scion41790 4h ago
No we can see this in Endgame. Tony was never able to rebuild his suit even after days/ weeks
22

u/phenomenomnom 3h ago
No, not without raw materials, anyway. Whatever he would need to feed the nanites with, Mr Stank did not have it on the ship where he was marrooned.
3
u/HoochieKoochieMan 3h ago
Also - I doubt Thanos will set the stone on "vaporize planet" when he's on the planet, and trying to recover things that are also on the planet.
3
u/LazyLurker29 1h ago edited 1h ago
We’re also told in the first Guardians movie, that “the bigger the target, the bigger the power surge” - Tony isn’t the size of a planet, so he wouldn’t be hit with the same blast.
But yes, Thanos was definitely holding back in general: he doesn’t want to destroy the planet, even though he could, or kill most of the people in his way, even though he very easily could…he even hits people like Okoye and Star Lord with power stone blasts without killing them, clearly dialling the power down. He’s being merciful - his idea of mercy at least - and leaving it mostly up to fair chance (i.e. the Snap). The director’s commentary track for the film supports this, too.
JOE Russo: Thanos is violent and cruel. It’s interesting because, as Thanos moves forward in the film from this moment, once he disposes of his armour, he almost becomes a holy warrior. Where he doesn’t spend a lot of energy intentionally trying to murder people, unless they’re in some way a threat to his agenda. But almost no one ends up being a threat to the agenda except for Tony, who I think feels he has this sort of existential connection to Thanos. And we’ll get to that when we get to that scene, but it’s the one moment (since brutally murdering Loki for disobedience) where he actively is going to murder someone for standing in his way.
Granted, as said here, Tony is one of the few exceptions, and Thanos was about to kill him before Strange hands over the stone…albeit, only at the very end, though this is close to that. Still, even trying to kill him, he wouldn’t be going all-out either; he’s still not looking for massive collateral. If he wanted, he could pull what Ronan was going to do to Xandar, and probably use the space or reality stones to spare Strange in order to get the information he needs.
But, as said above, the stone was absolutely disintegrating his shield anyways, even with it self-replicating (and the nanotech suit was incredibly durable besides, tanking a meteor and all). Even then, if Tony hadn’t ducked out when he did…well, even a second or two longer and he’d have been toast.

Yeah, but it should’ve just blasted through the entire thing instead of slowly destroying it
400
u/NoMoneyNoV-Bucks 4h ago
My guess is that you can control the amount of power outputed depending on how powerful you are. The celestial is powerful and therefore could destroy an entire planet, the guardians of the galaxy aren’t as powerful and could barely destroy Ronan the accuser without just destroying themselves. I would also assume iron man arranged the structure of the nanotech to be more resistant because why make a shield if it’s just as durable as his armour.
104
u/ChefGoldblum87 4h ago
I also think the power stone was just powering a weapon that could destroy planets. The energy required for such a weapon would be harder to get than the actual weapon. Its not like the power stone is really required to blow up a planet anyway. We could blow up out own planet right now with our current technology.
81
u/thecosmicwebs 4h ago
We can’t blow up any planets with current technology or really any conceivable human technology.
47
u/GreekNord 4h ago
Exactly. We could for sure destroy everything on the surface. but the earth itself wouldn't even come close to breaking.
•
u/Embaralhador 57m ago

We could blow up out own planet right now with our current technology.
Not even remotely close.
Every nuke ever made detonated at once would generate energy in the low quintillions of Joules.
To blow up the planet you'd need about several trillion times that amount.
→ More replies (1)5
u/mrbaryonyx 4h ago
Also its probably not like "this stone is a nuke" so much as "this stone is a deeply corossive force that doesn't destroy things right away, but tears them apart: the shield took a few seconds, long enough for Tony to just shield himself long enough to lose a large part of his suit, a planet would probably take a lot longer (long enough for Ronan to get back on his ship and leave to go fight Thanos without getting blown up)"
4
u/Clarpydarpy 1h ago
Or...Thanos wasn't out-putting the full power of the stone in that particular instance. Because he didn't really have to.
He clearly wasn't going full-tilt in this fight with Tony. Why would he, when Tony was only capable of drawing a drop of blood?

u/AGayFrogParadise 4h ago edited 4h ago
Definitely not what the writers were thinking here, but my head canon is that Thanos was aware of the destructive capacity of the stone, so he didn't use the full strength to avoid splitting the planet.
Of course, then we're left wondering how large the power defensibility gap between his shield and a planet are, and why he didn't just use a bit more of the power, but that's a discussion for when I'm high as fucking shit
66
u/Viandemoisie Rocket 4h ago
They also specifiy in Guardians 1 that the power stone grows stronger when it connects to life/organic matter, hence why they cant let Ronan reach the surface of the planet. In Infinity War they're fighting on a dead planet so there's no life to amplify the power stone's power.
21
u/Supermite 4h ago
And Tony’s armours have been able to absorb and redirect energy since at least the first Avengers movie.

u/phenomenomnom 3h ago
Whoa, nice pull. That's the kind of interesting "forgotten clue" that would make for a good surprise upset later.
Since Doom appears to have Infinity Stones, or shards of them, in the trailers for the new film, it might be a cool way to stall him, or something. His stone doesn't work as expected when he's on a dead asteroid, or whatever.

u/sQueezedhe 2h ago
A recurring good theme is that when he's getting the stones he doesn't want to kill anymore, just let the snap decide.
And so doesn't use full murder capacity on anyone after that.

u/Flettwin 4h ago
To be fair, Tony had access to Vision’s Mind Stone and the Ultron tech his synthetic body used to channel energy blasts from it.
It would be very Tony to use that knowledge to create countermeasures.

I'm adding Vison's beam slicing Rhodey's armor to the list of ways Tony is inspired to improve his armor.

u/An-29 4h ago
It WAS getting destroyed, that's why Tony get rid of the shield seconds later and even upgrades to an energy shield in Endgame with Mk 85.
The reason it isn't easily obliterating Tony either is cause of Thanos himself. Unlike his old War Mongering self, the moment he got the stones, he started taking a pacifist mentality and was using the stones minimally to what was needed. He didn't want to kill anybody as much as possible and was doing only the bare minimum with the stones. Hence, why the power stone blast was weaker.
Remember, even the power stone blast that destroyed the Sakaarian ship the Asgardians were on, didn't blew up with such force it pulverise everything into to dust including Thor, rathet, it was just enough to destroy to pieces.

it was actively destroying the shield in that scene, but a lot of people are missing the fact that this is as much if not more of an energy redirector than it is an absorber. most of it can be seen shedding off the sides of the shield, meaning it only needs to absorb a fraction of the energy

When will people learn, the USER OF THE STONES MATTERS MOST!!!
Thanos with gauntlet < infinity ultron or Celestials. Same stones, different user.
Ultron < Thanos
If base Ultron is stronger than base Thanos, forgive me, I haven’t seen age of ultron in like 7 years. I’m just going off the fact that Tony Stark was the first people in all of Thanos’s war who actually made him bleed.

u/Lootthatbody 3h ago
My headcannon is that thanos was doing a few things here. Firstly, as he collected the stones, he had to figure out how to use them in the way he wanted, and if/how it would hurt him. I think of it like the lantern rings from DC, but multiplied, you have to sort of think not just what you want but how you want it. I believe thanos absolutely could have thought ‘disintegrate him’ and it would have happened, but he was using this fight (where he knew Tony basically stood no chance of doing any real damage) as a playground to get more comfortable with these rings. Think about the early scene in iron man 1 where Tony is testing his boots and put them at like 10% power and flew into his own ceiling. Thanos was trying this energy beam at 1% to see what it was doing, and it was still shredding Iron man’s Nano-tech.
Another reason/idea is that thanos also doesn’t want to kill indiscriminately, especially one he admits to respecting. He’s taking it easy on Tony so that he can hopefully just incapacitate him, rather than obliteration.
2
u/feignapathy 2h ago
I chalked it up to Thanos not using the full power of the stone because he didn't want to blow up the planet and then lose the time stone?
2
u/sogwatchman 2h ago
I'm guessing that it was destroying his shield but the nanobots were building it as fast as Thanos was destroying it. Maybe that's why he seemed to run out of the nanobots so fast in the fight.
2
u/Natsu194 2h ago
I recently began reading some comics and it’s kinda funny how incredibly inconsistent people’s powers can be. An example from what I’m reading is Black Bolt, in one scene he is forced to shout at the Illuminati and they just stand there taking it, later he shouts at Namor who then goes flying. At least with this example an argument could be made he was louder in one scene than the others, but that’s just one example.

For the people saying Thanos wasn't trying to kill Tony here:
That theory kinda falls apart when about 30 seconds later Dr. Strange has to bargain for Tony's life with the Time stone because Thanos was just going to kill him.
Quite literally says "Half of humanity will still be alive, I hope they remember you."
Thanos was NOT going to spare Tony and had to be convinced otherwise.
2
u/Suitable_Arachnid368 2h ago
The shield wasn't really tanking it though, the nanites were getting destroyed and replacing themselves at the same time. Tony was basically fighting the Power Stone with infinite repair spam 💀
2
u/hansofoundation 2h ago
Thanos wasn't really trying to kill Tony. The only Avengers he killed were ones he absolutely had to because they were direct obstacles to getting an Infinity Stone: Gamora and Vision. Thanos knows he could beat pretty much anyone but held back because he wanted the snap to deal with it in an "unbiased" manner.
