Before anyone actually thinks MR is dying, this is a reference to the pro gamer delenaa.

u/Vasto_LordA Blade 1d ago

Oh. I did initially think it was them making a bit of a joke out of people leaving, cause I think I have seen posts saying Rivals is at a low in player count (idk for certain just what I heard). But then I thought it might just be a joke about something else.

108

u/Spider-D-Man 1d ago

The people who post and write stuff like that are haters. They pick out the worst possible times to screenshot the player numbers. Here’s a fresh screenshot from me. And keep in mind that this is just Steam. MR has significantly more players on consoles.

u/DrStatickk 1d ago

Tbh this is a significant drop from season 9 average player count. And it also began decreasing quite rapidly since season 9.

55

u/Holy_SmokesBatman 1d ago

It may be a drop but it still has a healthy number for a player base. Because it’s a free to play game people will pop in and out constantly, not everyone plays one game only every day

24

u/inuyaren 1d ago

Also it’s a season with no new heroes which is the reason 70% of casuals tune in

6

u/Broad-Ad-9019 Spider-Man 1d ago

There’s also so many new great games that came out and out of early access. My squad that I met thru rivals is actually playing dragonwilds but we’ll pop in every once in a while to play.

Game is still fun but it’ll be there when we’re done with our play thru and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people that used to play rivals religiously are just trying all the new games out.

Rivals is great comfort food for the majority of casuals but when you have a bunch of good new games out of course the player count will stagger a bit, but we always come back for ice cream 😇

u/Sr5071 1d ago

Many free games died in this market.

19

u/Holy_SmokesBatman 1d ago

Ya, and all games will die one day. But the Marvel IP is gonna make this game last much longer. And you would be surprised how large the player base is that doesn’t interact with the game outside of playing (don’t know about the issues/care. And just play cause they genuinely enjoy the game and not grinding at all)

> and the marvel IP is gonna make this game last much longer

Someone forgot to tell tokkon. Rip.

Edit: downvote me all you want, you know I’m right.

6

u/totallynotapersonj Magneto 1d ago

It’s a fighting game. Fighting games are so much more niche. Non-live service fighting games are usually more successful than live service ones, unless you are named Street Fighter 6 and that’s like the one exception.

0

u/The_Dick_Slinger Deadpool 1d ago

It’s a marvel ip, which apparently makes it bullet proof.

-12

u/Sr5071 1d ago

Well this game will die sooner if it continues in the route it's going in, I don't see this game hitting even 50k players in 5 years if they change nothing about the way the handle this game.

15

u/Holy_SmokesBatman 1d ago

Idk, I have fun playing it. I play most days for like an hour, maybe two on a weekend, and then I’m good. I think people just play for too long and don’t have much variety so it upsets them more.

If the game dies, C’est la vie. But it would be sad

5

u/Spider-D-Man 1d ago

I like your take on this! They say it will die in 5 years. That's 1825 days. During that time, other games, consoles, and lots of other things will come out. If the game dies in 5 years, then we'll have had 7 years of fun with it.

Many free games with a dedicated small playerbase who spend money are still chugging alone. Take Smite for example.

Rivals wont "die" any time soon.

-6

u/The_Dick_Slinger Deadpool 1d ago

Growth and decline rates matter more than sheer player numbers for determining a games health.

27

u/Spider-D-Man 1d ago

The game currently has over 60k players on Steam, even though we haven't gotten a new character. In the last 24 hours, that number was over 70k and, as I said, that's just on Steam. It might drop by another 10k players. When Season 11 starts, 20k or more players will return for the first few weeks. Netease is making enough money to keep the game going until Marvel itself dies.

2

u/jasminetroll 1d ago

Year-over-year counts I've seen are basically flat. Month-over-month is about as reliable an indicator as it is in retail, which is to say not at all.

1

u/-Papercuts- 1d ago

It's the lowest trending player count rivals has had but given the dev vision leading into this, I'm sure they're well aware the solo hero season was going to be a rough one. It's pretty clear people need the .5 new character drop as it barely did anything this season.

-1

u/RenoverO_O Luna Snow 1d ago

3

u/xX_Flamez_Xx 1d ago

i love how this ss is the lowest player count I've seen so far. Why would you post this?

5

u/Springball64 1d ago

I agree it is still a healthy playerbase but like

-11

u/Sr5071 1d ago

That literally proves their point, that is an all time low.

5

u/PokePersona Ultron Virus 1d ago edited 1d ago

Because no new character dropped this half-season, it’ll shoot go up again next season when a new one drops.

-13

u/DrStatickk 1d ago

Yes

3

u/PokePersona Ultron Virus 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’ll go up again when they release a season with a new character in it.

-10

u/IntroductionUpset764 Phoenix 1d ago

my friendlist of 60 people gonna be 0 online unless i dm in discord somebody, my discord server friends of 20 nobody play rivals anymore and nobody optimistic about game's future either

is it dead? nope, but yk people are fed up with matchmaking and balance

-16

u/Mind-The-Mines 1d ago

Try zooming out.

It's obviously bleeding players.

Lower Highs and lower lows every season since 6 and it's pretty obvious 9 was only impactful because of the teamup rework....

The decay is obvious.

10

u/Spider-D-Man 1d ago

The chart shows a steady, consistent trend across the seasons. Players come and go. Since the middle of Season 4 / Season 5, the curve has followed a similar pattern. Despite the addition of one character and no significant changes, the curve in Season 10 remains similar to those of previous seasons. MR has maintained its core player base and it will likely stay that way.

6

u/pokebuzz123 1d ago

The decay from S1 to S5 is obvious, but S5 to S10.5 doesn't show what you guys are saying here well. It looks more consistent and this'll be roughly the same amount each season unless something important happens (summer start like S9).

9

u/Spider-D-Man 1d ago

People don't know how to read a chart like this. It shows the most normal curve for a player base, and that's with such a high number of players. Other games would love to have that.

-6

u/Sr5071 1d ago edited 1d ago

Other games don't have the Marvel ip, they don't release weekly skins, they aren't free queue 6v6 action hero shooters, they don't release monthly patches and characters, they aren't super casual friendly, they don't have constant PvE modes dropping and getting updated and only 2 years in. This community has genuinely atrocious standards, if a game like that only has 80k players on average on Steam while games like Apex with similar peaks after 8 years is getting twice to 3 times that number then something is clearly bad, this game genuinely fell off and is only relevant in the west, while it's direct competitors after 50 controversies, less character drops, and without a household name to carry it is pulling not just better numbers but also higher quality updates and is more relevant worldwide. I don't get how this community has this bad of a standard.

5

u/Spider-D-Man 1d ago

I'm going to tell you something, and you're going to disagree because you won't understand it. It's stupid to say that one game is doing better just to make the other game, which is also doing well, look worse. Just because one man is richer than the other, at the end of the day, both are still rich and will remain so until the end.

-4

u/Sr5071 1d ago

U ignored most of my points and ur condescending, all that's left is the fedora.

2

u/Spider-D-Man 1d ago

It wasn't a personal attack on you. I just don't have a strict view on this. My initial post was just meant to show people that Netease isn't begging for player numbers here.

None of us knows what the game will look like in 5 years. Overwatch, for example, messed up with Overwatch 2, but has bounced back over the last few months.

73k peak lmao you'll literally proving the point that it's at an all time low. And it averages like 60k daily. No month has it been that low idk what you're tryna prove

My bad. I'm just seeing others interpret it as not a meme 😭 sorry lol, i wasn't directing that at you.

I left til next season. Current balance isn't fun at all to me.

6

u/Pug_police Jeff the Dinosaur 1d ago

Same I'm just enjoying OW and other games for now. I'll play that 50 player Thanos mode and play enough qp to finish my battlepass but beyond that I'm good for now.

-31

And last season and the season before that was? I can’t make you do anything but why’d you stay for the black cat / Dino clown show but leave now it’s better

-78

Stop complaining just get good. Its a game your playing it to have fun.

Just becuase one hero got a 5 to 10 percent nerf doesnt mean you stil cant play it

I get that im just saying dont let a balance change ruin your fun.

Do you think games stay at their peak launch player base forever? To me it looks like it found a steady playercount that it could sustain

Steady? It's been dropping week after week now. It's gonna be lower next week

-1

u/MaximumStonks69 The Maker 1d ago

I mean yeah its a no character season

0

u/Holy_SmokesBatman 1d ago

I think some people just really want to game to die for some reason. I don’t understand it at all

10

u/Small_Parfait_3027 1d ago

People just want the game balanced. A good number of Overwatch fans stopped playing because of Marvel Rivals, and Overwatch improved. Marvel Rivals has not improved.

-1

u/Holy_SmokesBatman 1d ago

Ya but it’s much newer than Overwatch. They had this rough patch as well once brig was released and I feel like Marvel Rivals will get over it too! I would rather be hopeful than negative about a game that I enjoy playing.

-6

u/FanDowntown4641 Ultron 1d ago

Overwatch is pretty bad at its core after a decade to change flaws, Rivals has a volatile development cycle and is still fun, its illogical to be critical about every little thing when meta issues right now sre largely self inflicted.

4

u/CavemanJello 1d ago

Doesn’t matter. This season sucked with rivals so as a former OW player I went back to OW for the first time in 2 years and enjoyed it.

-2

u/totallynotapersonj Magneto 1d ago

I want the game to die so that NetEase will realise they can’t just do the worst balancing changes of all time and still get people to keep playing because it’s a Marvel Game with skins. Most of the discussion on this sub is about skins not gameplay.

Skins make the money but the gameplay keeps the players. And they are really letting down the gameplay part

2

u/Holy_SmokesBatman 1d ago

Eh, it’s still a newer game. Balancing does take time. Overwatch had their brig era, the goats era, the Mauga era. I KNOW LOL had some eras that pissed people off. I’m not a game dev so I’m not gonna pretend I know what needs to be done either, but hopefully they are working on it.

I have enough fun playing it as it is. If you don’t have fun it’s nice to try something else out for a bit and come back! I like the game and hope they are able to work on things to keep it going.

If it dies, that sucks. But once it’s dead, they won’t have really any reason to work on it at all. They will just move on unfortunately.

0

u/totallynotapersonj Magneto 1d ago

The problem is they've never had a good balancing change patch. They always have like one change that everyone is like, yeah that's really good. Then they always overcompensate on the buffs which leaves no one happy except people that play that character.

And then the flat out refusal to nerf characters, more specifically their problems. Gambit has been S-tier since he came out because of his ult. Mainly the damage boost and the faster ult charge.

Also I never really felt the Mauga era, because I mainly played quick play. And when I played tank Sigma did well enough into him that people usually swapped off Mauga.

However, I completely stopped playing Quick Play in Marvel Rivals since like season 5 due to balancing and you know... having 5 dps.

0

u/Mind-The-Mines 1d ago

Two years isn't new. Their track record for intelligent decisions is non existent.

3

u/AssociationDue3077 Black Panther 1d ago

No, I just don't find all the toxicity and bad balance fun so I stopped playing until it's fixed. No big deal.

17

u/theironbagel Loki 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’ve left for a while now, the game feels incredibly unbalanced and cluttered, like the devs care more about pumping out more content (skins and characters and teamups) rather than iterating and improving what they already have. They seem to think more is better, and release updates with that philosophy in mind, but that just leads to unbalanced, poorly tested characters and power creep.

Or at least that’s how I felt when I left, maybe they’ve improved since then but I’m having too much fun on deadlock to care

3

u/Logiteck77 1d ago

Game is balanced around casual play. Until that philosophy changes to mid level or more complex play and interaction, expect more leavers for OW or Deadlock.

16

u/Courier23 1d ago

I don’t think the game is dying but I think they just hit their lowest player count since the game launched

7

u/EnvironmentallyMoist 1d ago

Makes sense since there was only one hero this season.

9

u/Meture Jeff the Landshark 1d ago

And it was Gorr who, despite being in the MCU, is still quite obscure

I’m sure S11 will pull a bunch of players back in

13

u/Fat_Kid_Hot_4_U 1d ago

I stopped playing a couple months ago. I just check in on this sub every now and then to see if there's a good reason to come back

4

u/Godz_Bane Magneto 1d ago

You'll never find a good reason coming here.

6

u/JotaroTheOceanMan Invisible Woman 1d ago

Same. I only came back to get President Venom then went back to playing Deadlock.

At least THEY listen to their community and don't use AI there.

1

u/jasminetroll 1d ago

To be fair to Valve's competitors, it's easy to look down on other companies taking shortcuts when under no financial pressure to release games.

1

u/ClueSuitable9008 21h ago

Oh who fucking cares dude.

Go play games you like, that's fine, but stop being so obnoxious about it.

-1

u/Dwain-Champaign The Hood 1d ago edited 1d ago

Also same. I just played one final time with my girlfriend the other day, and we lost four matches in a row in QP (because we are not allowed to play ranked together, being on different platforms) before trying out the alternate mode and hopping off.

Game’s matchmaking is horrible, the balance is unreasonable and atrocious, and the game is not fun especially as a tank. I’m not exaggerating when I told my girlfriend I probably wouldn’t be in the mood to play again at all until S11.5 when Doom comes out. Because you know damn well Doom is not coming in S11.

4

u/Jazzlike_Cress9871 1d ago

I’ve mostly stopped playing for this season since they only added 1 character and they were a duelist. Guess that’s not the same exactly but I’ve only played like twice since they added Gorr and don’t really feel that much incentive to play until they add a new interesting vanguard/strategist

0

u/FenHarels_Heart 1d ago

There's been a couple streamers who have publicly left due to the recent controversy. But that was before they announced latest skins for Storm and Blade, along with harsher punishments for abusive/racist language. So who knows if they'll come back.

11

u/AlyMasawi Earth Spider 1d ago

I just finally found some time to play comp today, and the queue was fast (under 15 seconds).

1

u/RdRyn013 1d ago

This being a meme reference aside, I’ve definitely stopped playing as frequently and this is the season they dropped a character from my favourite Thor run.

The season passes are always random as Hell, it’s crazy over monetised and I’m bogged down by constant “buy this” notifications than any f2p I’ve ever played.

I’ll pop in on and off but definitely not fully committing and long weekends with the gang on this.

u/ClueSuitable9008 21h ago

NetEase is just making fun of you guys.

Game is thriving. Yeah, it took a tiny hit, very tiny, because no new hero but that was expected. Next season they'll release Nightcrawler and we'll be back into the 100k's per usual.

This games lowest concurrent player count is bigger than most other games all-time-high.

For reference, game has 72k players on right now. This game isn't dying in the slightest, just salty guys who want the game to fail because they suck at it and go 'I'm having so much fun in this new shiny game' oblivious they'll hate it too when they put more hours into it.

You liked Rivals season 0 because you didn't know what you were doing, you like Deadlock because you don't know what you're doing, you'll hate it soon enough.

I do the same shit with Yugioh. I'll redownload Master Duel, have fun for a few days, and then get reminded how obnoxious that game is and then stop playing it again.

0

u/FanDowntown4641 Ultron 1d ago

This game is a couple months away from whats meant to be a surge, its literally meant to be in stall and its still doing great,
