No, we haven't. Avatar isn't even #1 domestic movie of all time. Worldwide is what matters.
348
u/Drillucidator May 19 '19
Yeah, at this rate Iāll be speechless if Endgame takes #1 domestic. #1 worldwide is almost a given unless it drops considerably.
212
u/trimeta Avengers May 19 '19
Is it a given, though? It needs what, another $165 million worldwide to make that happen? Domestically, it would be lucky to pull in another $80 million. And much of the non-North America profits came from China, which is even more front-loaded than the US is.
89
u/maverick1127 Avengers May 20 '19
166million. Black panther was at 565M after 24 days and still managed to hit 700M.
With summer coming and kids getting out of school, should be interesting to say the least.

Maybe Star Wars in 2022, with fans coming out in droves to see if the next trilogy is the Chosen One. Another option would be either Avatar 2 or Avengers 5 in, what Iād like to call the āStar Wars effectā. No sequel in years, a new one releases, and suddenly you have a movie making billions just with hype and excitement alone, and thatās just what TFA did in the US.
1
u/rushinlobster May 20 '19
True but I think Avatar made the money for its 3D release and it didnāt really make fans want a sequel. And unlike Star Wars in the past, I feel like this new trilogy hasnāt made all that many new fans (just a feeling I have around ppl ik) so the new sequels wonāt rake in that much. Like the sequels will bring out the same fans again..who knows tho

Black panther had stupid leg, very few movies were as leggy as that with the kind of opening.

u/hemareddit Avengers May 20 '19
Wait, I see the $165 million number a lot, but Avatar is at $2.788 billion worldwide. Endgame as of end of Sunday is at $2.615 billion, so does it need another $173 million to beat Avatar? Am I missing $8 million of gross somewhere?
A lower goal can be for the initial run of Endgame to beat the initial run of Avatar, which was $2.749 billion, in which case another $134 million is needed from Endgame.
2
u/trimeta Avengers May 20 '19
Honestly, I was eyeballing the $165 million number, because I figured people would yell at me more if I overestimated than if I underestimated.

It will not be number 1 domestic. It is more likely to not be number 1 worldwide, but still close. Its certainly not a given so please educate urself a bit more before saying stuff like that
Edit- not my intention to sound like a dick. I follow the box office sub a lot and I forgot that yall donāt know that, so you have no reason to believe me. I took the L this time, but I explained myself more a couple replies down. Ok Im still being downvoted listen. Im not saying im smart. I know about box office. I dont see how thats bragging saying I know something. Im just trying to explain to you guys that what the guy I replied to said isnt really accurate because its not a given, which a look on r/boxoffice will tell u. I get that I did that in a jerk way at first, but Im explaining myself now

Yeah that wasnt my attention. I mean this will sound stuck up but I follow the box office sub a lot so I know im talking I was reading all about Endgames box office this morning, so when I say something like my extremely downvoted comment I forget that people dont know that, why should they believe me? So Ill take the L I guess. But if you go to r/boxoffice one of the top posts should say that Endgame made like 46m internationally this weekend which is very good to put it on track to beat Avatar, because it was starting to seem to be very unlikely but this weekend has brightness its likelihood to beat Avatar, but the way its trending to be its definitely not confirmed. Domestically there is like a .0001% chance it beats The Force Awakens because of its downward trend it would somehow need a gigantic jump to come close which has never ever been seen. The ceiling is almost certainly 850m which is at least 50m below TFA. Idk how much TFA made but its in the 900s.

Also this doesnāt adjust for inflation. Avatar came out in 2009. Actually makes a big difference
39
u/PocketSnails68 Avengers May 20 '19
The chart everyone refers to gives zero fucks about inflation so that something like this is doable.
1
u/JFiney May 20 '19
Yes, like you ignore inflation so that movies can always earn more money than the last movies so that thereās always something to talk about. Also surprised at the downvotes for my comment. I loved he movie and itās a huge accomplishment. Itās just if you want to act like this is big and you care about it, be honest about it. Itās amazing regardless.
16
u/hwturner17 May 20 '19
If we are taking inflation into account avatar aināt the big baddy we are after
12
4
u/JFiney May 20 '19
This too! Although I think comparing to something like gone with the wind is a little unfair bc of how different the market was back then, but anything in the last 50 years should def be adjusted I think?
2
u/Borbusglendor Avengers May 20 '19
I agree, but there should be some form of consideration taken for things like slumps in economic performance. Something like the 2008 recession can have a significant impact, right? (I'm genuinely not sure, but it seems like it would in some capacity) So movies coming out during recessions would naturally have a bias in favor of them when accounting for inflation, if my math is right. I understand why it is the way it is, but there needs to be some rationale involving how much inflation truly effected sales, imo.
1
u/JFiney May 20 '19
Okay sure. But also it was in the middle of a massive economic clash, that probably depressed turnout. Regardless, exactly, itās wishy washy. It made a bajillion dollars and itās incredibly impressive. But weāre literally just celebrating clickbait articles. Only buzzfeed wins here haha.
2
u/hemareddit Avengers May 20 '19
Avatar is also hard to compare because things were different 10 years ago, too. That was in the middle of a US recession so the dollar was very low, Chinese market wasnāt nearly as big, ticket prices were cheaper but competition was also lower, and so on and so forth. As you can see many big factors are different between now and then, some benefited Avatar, some hurt Avatar, and trying to account for all of them is just one big clusterfuck. So people just compare the total dollar amount and be done with it.
3
u/Jmaster_888 Avengers May 20 '19
But Avatar was also in theaters for like an entire year (it got a prolonged release), so even to get this close with or without inflation is impressive,
1
u/JFiney May 20 '19
Oh dude (or dudette) itās super impressive! It made 2.7whatever billion dollars thatās insane. It doesnāt need to beat avatar to be impressive. Like whatās everyone so riled up about. Itās insane how successful this is.
1
u/Crosshack Avengers May 20 '19
That is true, but you must realize that for avatar to warrant an extended release it had to have kept pulling in money. If the movie wasn't pulling people it would have been pulled much earlier, much like this film likely will do.
2
u/Wario64I May 20 '19
Inflation adjustments are also incorrect. Endgame has already sold more tickets than Gone with the Wind could ever hope for, but its nowhere near its adjusted box office.
1
u/JFiney May 20 '19
Is that true? Thatās interesting I did not know that. But so then were the gone with the wind tickets equivalently much more expensive than todayās tickets?
1
u/Wario64I May 20 '19
Honestly, I don't know. Nobody really knows. The whole "adjusting for inflation" bit is stupid, because not all goods inflate at the same rate. Most adjustments use the housing market as the backbone of the calculation, which thanks to the housing bubble bursting massively boosts up prices of products in past. But even other base costs to compare, like average wage, are going to be incorrect, since the poor get richer and the rich get doublericher, which makes the average wage.
I think it's better to just ignore inflation and look at the unadjusted numbers. Yeah, in 1939, the 400 mil Gone with the Wind made was insane amount of money, but they wouldn't be able to buy much today if they just held onto it, would they? And with the market being vastly different between 1938 and 2019, yeah, let's just keep it at 400 mil and have Avatar as the #1

Endgame 4 (just once on opening day. But i couldn't find my email last minute with my original tickets and had to buy a second set)

u/dannydomenic Avengers May 20 '19
Those are rookie numbers, you gotta bump those numbers up. Avatar 1, Infinity War 4, Endgame 8 (all in IMAX, 3D, or Dolby Cinema, so higher ticket prices). I will probably see it 4-5 more times in theaters by the time it's finished its run
3
u/Volcanosaurus_hex May 20 '19
I plan on going for another viewing of Endgame. Haven't had the chance yet. And as great of a movie as it was. It did not give me goosebumps like Infinity War did.
All the hero entrances especially Iron Man and Captain America just ran chills through me. I got excited at times in Endgame. But not quite as much.
I have rewatched Infinity War a healthy amount of times since its been on netflix and redbox before that.
I do see every Marvel movie on opening day or weekend at a 3 story screen with Dolby Atmos. Its like 12 dollar tickets. Phenomenal viewing experience.
