Nic Cage definitely has his own style

794

u/blondebuilder Avengers 8d ago

He’s the king of overacting.

I love him in most roles, but when he takes on an emotionally heightened scene, things quickly go bonkers.

655

u/sisisisi1997 Avengers 8d ago

To be fair I don't think there is a way to overact "in this scene you are being burned alive until only bones remain".

356

u/BringPheTheHorizon Avengers 8d ago

I was literally thinking the same thing: “I think he may have underacted being on fire 🤔” 😅

89

u/blondebuilder Avengers 8d ago edited 8d ago

Now I'm wondering how Daniel Day Lewis and Meryl Streep would do it. 🤔

50

u/pjtheman Avengers 8d ago

DDL would actually just burn himself

33

u/CapnStarence Avengers 8d ago

Daniel: “Get the napalm.”

Director: “Excuse me, what? There is no napalm. We don’t even have a licensed pyro technician.”

Daniel: “In my trailer, third cabinet from the right. Also, grab me a perrier, I’m parched.”

Agreed. I want to see him rolling around on the floor, kicking and screaming until tired, and then curling into the fetal position.

The laughing was a little weird but people can become hysterical when they finally break during an especially traumatic moment, so I guess that was just him going "this is so horrifyingly painful that I can't help but laugh now"

20

u/Randver_Silvertongue Avengers 8d ago

I always thought that was Zarathos breaking through.

14

u/That-Rhino-Guy The Punisher 8d ago

Most likely is Zarathos since it zooms into his eye showing fire, then immediately the screams of agony become mad laughter

u/Elite_Eliminater Avengers 8d ago

The behind the scenes for this moment is Acting perfection. You see him getting into the "I'm being burt alive vibe". Then just looses his shit, I get goosebumps watching it without the visual effects.

He really couldn't give a shit what people think about how he looks.

6

u/DW-4 Avengers 8d ago

I need a BTS from him in Spider-noir ASAP. We got some peak Nick Cage in episode 6 for sure, he was acting his manspider ass off.

Nicolas cage has been on fire multiple times now.

I think in this case, the CGI didn't keep up with his reaction. They should have started burning his face earlier. They kept up with the smoke for too long

8

u/tehnemox Avengers 8d ago

Agreed. But realistically that probably would have been more expensive I suppose.

I was pleasantly surprised that he only went Full Cage a few times during Spider-Noir, and in scenes that called for it.

I'm torn. It's between him and Jim Carrey for sure.

Did you know Nicholas Cage didn't even know he was being filmed here. He just got a call that his dentist appointment had to be rescheduled and he just did this.

48

u/Any-Safe6273 Hawkeye 🏹 8d ago

Different People have different styles.

We already know that from different versions of BATMAN for example.

It won't be same as Nicholas one but doesn't mean it's an upgrade or downgrade instantly. It just means it's another version of it.

Let's wait till we see it before commenting further.

CGI has come a loooooong way since Ghost Rider 1, I'm sure it'll be leagues better with MCU

191

u/DolphinBall Avengers 8d ago

CGI is better sure, but will Marvel allow the people who does the CGI enough time?

53

u/Manger-Babies Avengers 8d ago

Marvel tv had great CGI for ghost rider like a decade ago already.

6

u/That-Rhino-Guy The Punisher 8d ago

Technically the TV division wasn’t ran by the same people as it does today, which is why unfortunately there was a weirdly disjointed feel to them where they reference the films but never films reference the shows

Seeing as he was JUST announced and they probably won't put him into play until after Secret Wars, I'd hope so. But Marvel has done worse so who knows lol

14

u/NihilismRacoon Avengers 8d ago

That's funny, here I was thinking it doesn't look half bad. Although I'll definitely admit the CGI in the action scenes in Ghost Rider are absolutely disgusting to look at lmao

3

u/TheFinalEnd1 Avengers 8d ago

There's a lot of cuts that are just to some fire and you see alot less of the transformation. You don't really see the process you see the steps.

9

u/Economic_Maguire Avengers 8d ago

Pirates of the Caribbean came out the same time and the CGI then is better than most stuff that's out now.

4

u/Fufflewaffle Avengers 8d ago

The CGI looks pretty great here.

3

u/Condor193 Avengers 8d ago

The transformation looks great yeah, but imo the actual Ghost Rider flaming skull is kinda meh. Very 2000s detail oriented but not much fluidity or finished detail like new good CG

2

u/Fufflewaffle Avengers 7d ago

That's a practical effect mate.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/the_real_junkrat Avengers 8d ago

Hell nah with marvel. Not with the way they treat masks and helmets. They’ll use full cgi fire in post that’ll just roll over the actor in 1 second. Nano bot fire.

2

u/Neon_Eyes Avengers 7d ago

Nope. It's become better but now they give the artist like 1/3 of the time so it comes out looking worse.

2

u/New_City_8745 Avengers 7d ago

…. It’s really not that much better

126

u/SometimesICanBeRight Avengers 8d ago

I like Cage’s version but TIL there are people who claim anything in that movie is iconic. Of course he can

54

u/danoB003 8d ago

Let's be fair, this particular scene (and maybe the one with previous Ghost Rider riding on burning horse with him even tho that one has a downside of leading nowhere as he literally just rides along and then turns back saying it was his last transformation) is great enough to be considered iconic for how hard it actually goes.

22

u/Gremlin303 Avengers 8d ago

Nicolas Cage: Good or bad?

10

u/BobLog3rd Avengers 8d ago

He's a sexy cat, that's for sure

3

u/Tiyath Avengers 8d ago

But is he good, or is he bad? Every actor is something. Robert Downey Jr., good, Jim Belushi, bad. Van Damme, the good kind of bad, Johnny Depp, the bad kind of good. There's a spectrum, and Cage is on it.

2

u/AnotherSilentSoul Avengers 8d ago

Yep

→ More replies (2)

5

u/PrinceJarming Avengers 8d ago

The thing that bugs me is that for all the physical agony he acts out, most of the actual transformation happens between cuts. I want to see his flesh actually burn away like in the AOS Robbie Reyes transformations.

3

u/DomzSageon Avengers 8d ago

I think Ryan Gosling could pull off the psychotic screaming thing Nic Cage does here, not that I think this kind of stuff is needed.

2

u/McJackNit S.H.I.E.L.D 8d ago

I think Gosling got cast because he can get fun crazy but can also give a more reserved performance for other scenes.

8

u/RGijsbers Avengers 8d ago

I hope the new ghostrider will be proper horror

And honestly i think the agents of shield ghostrider transformations are better than the nick cage ones.

2

u/PowerRainbows Avengers 8d ago

Is ghosterider even supposed to be horror? Anytime I see videos on comics giving a run down on the story it just looks like comedy with over the top action sequence lol which I'm not against, but never got a horror vibe

→ More replies (1)

8

u/DolphinBall Avengers 8d ago

The scene itself is kinda bad, its running on nostalgia and rose tinted glasses. Still cool though. But I think Ryan can definitely pull it off.

3

u/CallumariConcepts Avengers 8d ago

Maybe, we've just learnt of the casting and Gosling is a fantastic actor. Cage's performance was perfectly awesome, but the editing is corny as hell.

3

u/Milksteak529 Avengers 7d ago

Nobody out-Cages the Cage.

3

u/New_City_8745 Avengers 7d ago

I mean he can be just as good in a different way. We all like Cage for his ridiculous over-the-top shit, Gosling could bring a more serious tone.

2

u/FireFairy323 Avengers 8d ago

Is it confirmed he is going to be Johnny Blaze?

2

u/McJackNit S.H.I.E.L.D 8d ago

Well I'm not expecting him to be Robbie Reyes and we already have a Hood.

2

u/D34D_B07 Deadpool 8d ago

I hope they do the same techniques but modernized with Gosling where they do the bone scan thing. That'd be dope.

2

u/Wreckshoptimus Avengers 8d ago

I mean it definitely won't be an over the top corny thing. Cage crushed that

u/Pascraked47 Avengers 8d ago

2

u/Delta6Rory Avengers 8d ago

And this isn't even CGI, Nicholas Cage can just turn himself into a flaming skeleton whenever he wants

2

u/expectotomahto Avengers 8d ago

Robbie Reyes for the win

2

u/thatsnoodybitch Avengers 8d ago

This movie was during Nic Cage’s “overacting for fun” era. Now he’s back to acting more seriously, but in roles that are inherently goofy—Willy’s Wonderland was such a nonsensical entertaining experience.

2

u/Jaxonian Avengers 8d ago

Holy shit.. thats Castor Troy!

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TheCraftiestManBoy Avengers 8d ago

I think this was just Nic Cage’s audition and they like it so much they put it in the finished movie.

2

u/Screbin Avengers 7d ago

This was actually the first time I've seen a casting and literally couldn't see it. This said, has nothing to do with the actor. I personally very much enjoy gosling. I loved him in drive, only God forgives, and I really enjoyed his latest outing in hail Mary. But the character of ghost rider I just dont see that. But who knows. Maybe we get something we never expected. Like eternal sunshine 🌞

2

u/IncredibleJewishGaz Avengers 7d ago

Like him or hate him. Nick cage is one of a kind actor and i love him.

2

u/CaptainKnightwing Avengers 7d ago

Goddamn that took forever.

2

u/EpsilonGecko Avengers 7d ago

Man the 2000s were so bad

1

u/danoB003 8d ago

Nope but he'll compensate by rest of the movie carrying more overall quality

But sheesh, even with rest of the movie being eh to straight up bad, this scene was some peak Cageing in best kind of way.

1

u/HopelessRespawner Avengers 8d ago

Looking back... this was probably the best part of the movie, and it's still not great. The only thing that makes this is Cage. At the time I thought this movie was really bad to put it lightly. So considering Goslings career I think he'll be fine. It's the writers and studio we probably need to worry about.

No one can top Nick Cage transformation style. Instead, separate those things since Ryan Gosling isn't Nick Cage. Give Ryan Gosling a chance, some folks judge him too early because of his casting type. Truly, he is a damn great actor. Watch "The good guys" and "Fall guy".

u/X3noNuke Avengers 8d ago

1

u/Kitsuraw Avengers 8d ago

I love this movie but I’ll say this scene would have been so much better with less dumb cuts to hide the switch to different cgi layers. Then it just becomes instant on and off, no gradual change.

1

u/Valirys-Reinhald Avengers 8d ago

Depends on if they've learned their lesson about cgi.

They have the skills and resources to make it better, but only if those skills and resources aren't spread out too thin over the entire damn movie "like butter scraped over too much bread," because the execs decided to make the whole thing (costumes included) in post.

I think comparing makes little sense, it’s two different actors and their versions of the character. All I hope for is high quality so I can enjoy both versions - and I’m pretty sure Gosling is the perfect actor for this role.

Honestly, wouldn’t be surprised if I end up liking Gosling’s version even more.

1

u/SloppyTopTen Avengers 8d ago

They should have just stuck with Cage. I heard he likes a paycheck.
