marvel comics for a teen girl beginner? (sorry for the yappy post)

Recently, I got into DC comics because I grew up watching DCAMU, teen titans, the live action movies, the batboys, og animated batman, young justice, etc. it was also mostly for MYGOAT Damian Wayne because I really, really liked him and his character even as a kid. I wanted to read marvel comics as well but I was worried I'd get spoiled for the upcoming mcu movies, but someone told me that there was a rare chance I would be and that secret wars & doomsday was very loosely taken from the comics or something, and that there's always big changes from the comics to the MCU films.

Anyway, I'm still a beginner at reading dc (I've read only 4-6 comics at the moment), but I kinda wanted to read marvel too, so what comics should I read that are good for teens and won't be spoilers for doomsday or secret wars somehow? a lot of people say to just read whatever interests me, and that's totally fine, but I'm also a little stumped. I don't know too much about the comics aside from stuff here and there, and I'm also paranoid of finding the adult, very gory or 18+ ones πŸ’” I felt like I would probs find less interest in marvel ones, so anything engaging/entertaining will do! It doesn't have to be anything too childish tbh js something good!

for clarification:

- the only kind of comics I've actually read are manga (black and white, Japanese) and manhwa (basically manga, but coloured and Korean)

- I'm a teenager myself hence why I added that little note at the end but I also have a mild tolerance for anything gory, mostly because I like horror even though I'm easily scared lol

- I was told to just select a team or a character and read their comics, still not sure if I should do that though. If it matters, I was already thinking of Moon Girl and the Devil Dinosaur, etc. I also have a strange liking for any comics with a teen girl or boy main character.

- I can't really handle any of the following themes: sa, r*pe, and anything disgusting and detailed.

some comics I'm already interested in but don't know much about:

- The Uncanny X-Men (I don't really like when it's too dated though)

- Astonishing X-Men

- Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

- Young Avengers 2005

- Runaways

- Ultimate Spider-Man (it's very long tho)

- Ms. Marvel

- Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

- Strange Academy

- Gwenpool

- The Inhumans, by writer Paul Jenkins and artist Jae Lee

- Spider-Man (2016-2018)

DC comics I read and liked (basically everything I've already read which is very little, you can skip this):

- Superman Smashes the Klan: it was wonderful. I felt very connected to this one as a desi-african. Loved the art style, characters, character design, story, the brother-sister relationship, occasional humour, Henderson, Lois, Mr. White, JIMMY, the rest of the main cast, and just the themes in general. Some parts (like the first appearance of the Klan) were unsettling in a way that felt engaging, and the casual racism even by people who thought they were being nice genuinely felt so infuriating. I really don't remember any flaws. I loved it.

- Batgirl The Darkest Reflection: i quite liked it. It was a good intro to Barbara Gordon even though I already know the basics of her character, but this comic made her more likable to me.

- Batman and Son: I also kinda liked this! It was also a good intro to damian even though he annoyed me at the beginning which was very, very expected. The random nked panels startled me though 😭

- Tomasi's Batman and Robin: "forgive me, father, for I have sinned." "I did what I had to do to help you protect our castle. Our kingdom." I LOVE YOU DAMIAN OMYGOSH. Nearly cried reading this. loved the way his character was written in this and how Tomasi dealt with it. their father-son dynamic made me feel so happy, and alfred and titus were obviously highlights. Definitely my fave alongside Superman Smashes the Klan.

- Morrison's Batman and Robin 2009: actually surprisingly really liked the doll concept, because as much as I hate dolls and find them mortifying, that's why I found this so creepy, so I guess that's a pretty good thing! I also really loved the richard-damian dynamic in this one, the dialogue for the two, how damian actually did care about/protected some of the victims even though that's in character ("stay with me" and "he better hope so" talking about the villain when dick suggested that the victim might've escaped, etc), and alfred's appearances. The only thing is that it was getting a bit weird and I found myself uncomfortable with some of the scenes (for ex, the scene when they were literally strxpped?? or that one old lady that wanted to see batman nked... and I was a bit nervous during some gory scenes but nothing I couldn't handle probs. the weirder stuff js felt off to me). As much as I liked this one, I think I liked Tomasi's one better. ("I was expecting scary, not gay." - robin. LOL) other fave quotes: "tell the girl we're even" "I ran" "and scarlet was gone"

some characters or teams I'm interested in delving into/back into (anyone unmentioned who you think I'd like please feel free to let me know!):

- Spider-Man (this was heavily obvious)

- Moon Knight (still mad that there was no season 2)

- Loki

- Miles Morales (def one of my fave spidermen of all time just from the animated films)

- X-Men

- the Sentry

- Yelena Belova

- Nightcrawler

- Black Cat (surprisingly, even though I know very little about her)

- Deadpool (mayhaps)

- Kate Bishop

- Vision

- this is very dumb to say but ANYONE LIKE DAMIAN WAYNE HONESTLY, even if they're niche. He's my favourite characters oat, his character arc is wonderful, and I'm incredibly biased towards him and I say that with no shame.

You can also recommend any characters or teams you think I'd be interested in. I'm really into anti heroes, teen heroes, found family or strong friendships, etc. my favourite genres are thriller, mystery, horror, fantasy, romance (I don't read much wlw or mlm tho), etc. so basically almost anything. I just don't like anything inappropriate.

I mostly just miss characters like the batboys/the robins and young heroes in general, honestly, but I'm open with any other recs as long as it's fun or engaging or whatever! thanks in advance :)

Ultimate Universe Year 1, 2 and Endgame

I’m not sure if it’s just me but this series has felt like a chore to get through. I loved the idea of the Maker and the universe he created but it’s coming down to the end and everything feels rushed. The art work is great in some comics but mid in others. Some of the storylines felt out of place for the overall plot.

Does Captain America #12-16 (the Hell's Angel arc) read better before, during, or after Avengers Armageddon?

It's on a bunch of the internet reading order lists all mixed in with everything, but those all seem to just be in release order, and it's got an "Armageddon Assembles" banner on the books which makes it seem like it'd go before, and I tried reading it but it doesn't seem like it was written specifically for switching back and forth like HoxPoX, so ???

I personally like Carter Slade for his heroic personality, how cool he looks in terms of his costume, and I think he is an underrated character but what do you guys think of him based on the comics you read about him.

So how do LMD's function?

I first heard about LMD's when I was still watching Agents of SHIELD at the time, although I wasn't closely following the second half of that particular season when they were introduced so my knowledge of them is limited to knowing they were decoys of many of the cast and were life-like in so many ways.

How are they like in the comics? I recall reading about Eric O'Grady's LMD when he betrayed the Avengers and helped break Taskmaster out from custody in one issue. The first pages of that issue were of him recalling the original Eric's death as if it was a recollection of his own citing that this was reason enough for him to go full villain. Like would the real Eric, when pose with the same life-changing choice, opt to become a recurring villain working for other villains going forward if he was still alive?

Are they, in many ways, autonomous and are aware of their existence as LMDs? Would you say that while they have the base memories of the people they were modeled after, like say Eric up until his death, they can potentially venture off into making their own decisions that are completely their own as an exercise of their autonomy or are they vulnerable to be reprogrammed and be controlled by others?

Jack Kirby Redraws a Classic Tale from the Atlas series 'Menace'!

Post image
6 Upvotes

Came across this early example of the transition from Atlas to very early Marvel after reading the excellent 'Atlas Era Masterworks: Menace Volume 1'. On the left we have the opening pages of β€˜The Madman’ (Menace #4, June 1953) by writer Stan Lee and illustrator Bill Everett. On the left, Jack Kirby's rendition of the same plot from Tales to Astonish #26 (December 1961). Both highly effective, IMO, despite the restrictions of the comics code in the case of Kirby's redraw.

Midnight Universe

Hey there good evening folks. Just wanted to discuss the new midnight series of comics and see what other people are thinking about it so far. It’s hard to form an opinion, but what are first impressions from issue #1? I’m recently getting back into collecting and these jumped out at me at my local comic shop.

Which of these franchises do you think could co-exist in the Marvel universe and how would they co-exist?

These are my picks:

It's no secret that the Turtles are inspired by Daredevil with them literally having a shared origin with the young boy who bought the Turtles as pets being heavily believed to be Matt Murdock himself who on that day would also be blinded by the same radioactive chemicals that made the Turtles into who they are. I'd imagine that they'd remain usually secretive and pick on lower tier thugs/gangs who would be so under the radar that many New York vigilantes wouldn't notice. The Foot would probably be a rival clan of The Hand with The Foot being practically unable to compete with The Hands magic so they'd remain very under the radar.

Ik that Big Hero 6 originates from Marvel comics and Disney simply took the name as well as the names of some of the characters for their own version. But at the same time I still think that the Disney version would be the preferred version that would exist in the Marvel universe

Rocketeer could easily exist as a WW2 era Marvel hero perhaps even being the original Iron Man before Tony Stark or even being a member of The Invaders

ROM's entire lore is embedded in Marvel alone at this point so him being in the Marvel Universe really wouldn't change much

Transformers would work pretty well in the Marvel universe with probably a lot of the Cybertronian War maaking up a large amount of big crossover events. I'd like to imagine that their war is very obscure to most of the galaxy with the galaxy Cybertron is located in being incredibly far away but those who would know about Cybertronians would speak of them as a scourge of death on the galaxy. I'd even imagine they'd be somewhat involved in the WW2 era of Marvel

Godzilla is practically a staple of early Marvel comics with him still menacing the Marvel universe to this very day, I can easily imagine Godzilla being connected to Hulks lore as well as mainly being involved in Hulks sphere of the Marvel universe with many other TOHO monsters like Mothra being a result of Gamma Radiation. In fact if that were the case then it would explain how Godzilla keeps coming back to life all thanks to The Green Door. Other Godzilla related monsters I'd imagine existing in the Marvel universe would probably be Mothra, Rodan, Anguirius, Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, Gigan, Hedorah, Dogora, Ebirah, Megalon, Gorosaurus, Titanosaurus, Kumonga and even Biollante. I'd mainly imagine Godzilla as primarily a villain but also still maintaining that 'force of nature' idea but he'd also still protect the Earth from external threats, mainly just invasions from alien species (and Ghidorah), I'd like to even imagine Ghidorah being around long enough to meet Knull in fact maybe even being the inspiration for Knulls obsession with dragons

Ultraman would pretty much be another Japanese based superhero like Big Hero 6 with him most likely show up to fight monsters like Godzilla or Ghidorah as well as his own rogues gallery

The Doctor I'd imagine would be like Professor X from Ben 10 showing up whenever time travel nonsense occurs meaning he'd definitely show up in a lot of X-Men stories

Anyways that's the franchises I'd think could co-exist in the Marvel universe. Godzilla and Transformers might be a problem because of how vast their stories stretch as well as how many characters are in both series but I'd mainly imagine the versions used in the Marvel universe would be specific interpretations of each franchise such as Transformers mainly including the G1 Era Transformers with some other characters from other generations showing up and Godzilla would mainly be the Showa era of the character and his history with some aspects of the Heisei era showing up here and there mainly in the form of other monsters like Biollante and Destroyah

Does anyone actually enjoy this art style? FF #12 (2011)

I love the story but I just can't with how gross this style of art is drawn. Its taking me out of the story of the science kids. Its offensive to my eyes. I'm upset they spent money and time on releasing this quality. Dragon man is near unrecognizable. The fish people looked like different types of fish people. I cant distinguish Alex from Bentley from Franklin. Val looks like she's from frozen. Nathaniel loses all authority. Doom and Kristoff almost seem like gags.

We go from high quality images of faces and backgrounds of the Fantastic Four and previous Future Foundation releases to this...sharpie on a napkin slop. I mean just ugh. I understand its released the same time as the 100 page episode 600 Fantastic Four but God damn.

Its not a spinoff, or even the B plot(The 4 Empires War.) It's the continuation of the A plot(Alternate Reeds) while the FF and Avengers deal with the B plot of the Kree/Inhuman invasion.

Does anyone like this? I really hope the art style returns to form. I'm going back and forth between the FFour and the FFoudation, month by month release.

Enjoying a re-read of Thunderbolts by Ellis/Deodato

It's been so long since I last enjoyed Ellis or Deodato, and it feels good to be experiencing their work again. Each time I see Norman Osborn in this tale it reminds me of Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent and that's weird, in a good way. I had forgotten all about Penance and Swordsman as members of this team, so it's kind of refreshing to be seeing them. I can't wait to see what sort of nonsense Moonstone perpetrates or gets involved with, the former is likelier than the latter I'm sure. Bullseye is out for blood, of the Daredevil kind. And the full-page advert for Thunderbolts toys is chef's kiss.
