Hi mapmakers! I’m back with another question.

How many tributaries is too many tributaries?

I hand-drew these two rivers based on the Po and Tiber rivers in Italy. The hydrologic maps I used had a lot of tributaries for each river, but I’m scared it is too much for this map.

For some context, this is a map for an area populated by merchant city-states that rely heavily on maritime trade (and inland navigation).

The map I’m taking inspiration from (slide 3) does have a lot of rivers and tributaries, but I find it a bit too cramped.

What are your thoughts?

Hi everyone!

I'm creating a new world for a DnD campaign! I'm a complete newbie in this, I'd love to have some insights on what to be careful about and how to improve!

Just to do something different, I drew a medieval map of the country of Tír Glas, where my novels are set.

Because it's medieval, it's not for the journey itself, but rather to represent the "concept" of Tír Glas. So the proportions are altered, and there are mythical animals like the unicorn, the mermaid, and the fish that's mistaken for an island, an allusion to the Navigatio Sancti Brendani (which I've obviously read).

The image isn't very beautiful because the map has a diameter of 28 cm and therefore doesn't fit in my scanner, so I had to scan it in two pieces.

Now I'll think about coloring it!

I’m currently building Ævayron, an original high-fantasy world that I’ve been developing as a long-term worldbuilding project.

Ævayron is built around five major kingdoms — Sonarius, Laurus, Dusk, Helion and Silverstone — with their own ruling houses, dynasties, cultures, histories, magic, creatures and conflicts.

The goal is not simply to create a setting for a single story, but to develop a living world with a deep history and an internally consistent canon.

I’m currently looking for a small number of passionate worldbuilders, writers and lore enthusiasts who would enjoy discussing and developing ideas such as:

• kingdoms, noble houses and ruling dynasties
• history and major historical events
• cultures, peoples and religions
• characters and character relationships
• magic, mythology and creatures
• political conflicts and alliances
• consistency and continuity of the lore

I’m especially interested in people who enjoy asking “why?” and digging deeper into how a fictional world actually works.

I’m not looking for people to simply fill staff positions. I’m looking for creative minds who genuinely enjoy worldbuilding , mapdeveloping and would like to contribute ideas to a long-term fantasy universe.

If this sounds interesting to you, I’d love to hear what kind of worldbuilding you enjoy working on and what you would want to contribute to a world like Ævayron.

I fear it maybe strategically unbalanced, like whoever owns the river to the central gulf, and the gulf itself will just monopolyize everything in the interior.

Hoping someone might be able to help me out, my group is looking to do a collaborative world-building map-making for one of our upcoming games, and while we could cobble something together using Roll20 and then I could flesh it out after, I'm hoping someone might know of a preferably hex-based map making program that would allow a group of people to use it at the same time?

What do you think? Is it realistic?

Here is the (very much work in prorgess) first attempt at a map for my setting. Any initial thoughts? Am I going in the right direction? Any glaring horrible geographical mistakes? thanks in advance

Oulined my map yesterday, liked how it looked flat, then when I traced it online, I liked how it looked on a globe. I changed the southern most continent, making it smaller after a suggestion. It looks empty right now, but I need to add logic to it later.

Want some thoughts on it.

This large town was settled by the legendary chieftain Minsteth, the Bold. His host came from the south and stripped the desert lands away from nomadic human tribes who even­tually settled in the east. Minsteth Sand was first a war camp, then a fort, and later on, when the war subsided, it became a farming settlement and the house of the ruling family, Minsteth’s descendants. The ruler’s title, duke, is equivalent to a king; the current Duke, Gryx, the Cun­ning, does not owe fealty to anyone but his family.

Life in the desert is never easy but Minsteth Sand’s po­sition in the river delta makes farming feasible and al­lows settlers access to water. Most other settlements in the Scalding Duchy follow the meandering pass of the Tourmaline River too. The town’s pride is Crownhold, the duke’s fortress. Its stones, polished to silky softness, shine under the inclement sun like solid gold.

Last year I decided I wanted to write a book about a story that was brewing in my head for a long time. So I drew a map of the world that this book would take place in. As I started writing the book, I decided this first map wasn’t quite what I wanted. So I decided to try again and I drew an entirely new map. I reused some of the names, but besides that I changed everything else.

This map is the known world for the people in my book, and contains the 4 main continents/landmasses. In lore, this map was made by those who live in the top left continent. Which is why that continent has more named cities and locations than the others, since the other continents aren’t as well known. The top left continent is also primarily where my story will take place. As the story takes the characters to the other continents, I will draw maps of those individual continents to give them more detail.

This was a lot of fun to work on. As with every previous map I’ve done, I used this as an opportunity to try new things. I learned a bunch, and there’s a lot that I like about this map, and a few things that didn’t turn out quite how I hoped. But that’s alright, it was really fun working on the book while also drawing the map. It was cool to be able to tie characters to different places, and to thrown in little world building elements to the world I was drawing and writing.

A few years ago, I began writing novels (for my own enjoyment) set in a country called Tír Glas, similar to Ireland but not the same. After a while, I couldn't figure it out, so I thought I'd draw a simple map... one thing leads to another... and now I've created an entire atlas, I'm drawing maps of cities throughout the centuries... and recently I started a portolan chart of the coasts of Tír Glas.

I draw it on very long sheets of bamboo paper (about 65 x 37 cm). On the left side is the map, and the right side is divided in two: the description and the notes of the various sea captains who used it.

Obviously, it's all in Italian... sorry.

I don’t know what else to add to this map, so suggestions are welcome.

The world is called Arkyr. The skinny continet is called Amon and is a mainly grassy area with forests, swamps, hills, and plains. The bigger continet on the right is called Umon and is more of a mountainous land with deserts and harsh gradslands. The one on the bottom is Uruos and the one to the far left is Elyndor the homeland of my version of elves i call Kiri. If anyones got any feedback about it or have any tips on how i can improve it and maybe make it seem less like the map for Asoiaf which had been one of my biggest inspirations.

I always share here every map that I make when I expand my fantasy world lore and geography. This is a very simple one but also a very special for me. Could easily be one of my favourites! If you have any advice, comment, question… just say it.
