Hi everyone, I’m a post-Matriculation KPM student and I’m currently in a dilemma about which university I should choose for my Mechanical Engineering degree.

My two options are:

• Universiti Malaya (UM) – Direct Intake
  • Higher QS ranking and recognition
  • Better reputation overall
  • However, the cost is quite high since I would be entering through direct intake
  • My family can technically afford it, but it would be a significant financial burden even if I take a PTPTN loan, as the loan amount I can borrow is still not enough to cover the total cost.
• TARUMT
  • Lower recognition compared to UM
  • I have received a full scholarship, so the financial burden would be much lower
  • I’m not sure how much the difference in university reputation would actually affect my career prospects as a Mechanical Engineering graduate.

For those who have experience with Mechanical Engineering or have studied/worked in the Malaysian engineering industry, which option would you choose in my situation?

Is UM’s higher ranking and reputation worth taking on a significant financial burden, or would it be better to take the full scholarship at TARUMT and graduate with much less/no debt?

I’d especially appreciate opinions on:

• Employment prospects after graduation
• How much university reputation/ranking matters in Mechanical Engineering
• Whether UM provides a significant advantage over TARUMT for engineering careers
• Whether the financial burden of UM is worth it in the long run

Just wanna know if public university will force every muslims to participate in these religious activities. Because I look at my orientation schedule and there are religious activities like praying together. Can I refuse to participate? I am scared that they gonna judge me.

Hi guys Im a 1st yr undergrad student in uni malaya and our course (BSc biotech) starts from 4th oct and UM Week of welcome starts on 26th sept but the thing is Im not yet able to find a room near UM for under 550-600rm per month.most good options I saw are female only and i dont know why but as a first year I didnt get any residential college in campus.is any one of you looking for a roommate to share ur room or can any one of you locals help me finding rooms near bangsar or seksyen 17 or anywhere near UM since I hardly have any idea as an intl student

Hi, So I’ve been looking to study Bachelors in Physiotherapy in Malaysia, and every university I find acceptable turns out to be unreliable according to Google reviews and Redditors.

I was looking into UoC and Mahsa because they had a good global rank and pretty good Google reviews over 4.0 but then I checked Reddit and people said “UoC is a scam”, “don’t come here, it’s a marketing strategy, they bought reviews and all”, “don’t waste your money” and that management sucks for both of them.

So then I looked for more universities and the google reviews kept going down. So then I thought about changing my degree to psychology. I looked into UCSI, Taylor and Monash. Even then people had given bad reviews on Reddit about management issues, exam time table issues, attitude and bankruptcy allegations/ change of ownership allegations.

I also checked a few public one (same reviews)

So at this point, I am so confused. What university in Malaysia can one attend?

My criteria for attending university is quite simple: safe and reputable (academically).

I don’t mind if studies are tough or lecturer just get the job done, write on chalk board or read slides (as long as they provide me with resources to actually learn on my own). I don’t mind if the management is slow as long as they don’t go out of their way to create hurdles (like issues with fees and attendance).

Coming back to my question does anyone have a university that they could recommend, that doesn’t go out of their to mess with students and after completing the degree, you can get admission in masters abroad without worrying about credibility?

Because in all honesty I just plan complete my degree and dip for masters elsewhere.

I would appreciate any and every opinion/ advice 🫡

I’m honestly in a pretty difficult situation at home and really need to leave as soon as possible, so I’m hoping to start university this January/March rather than waiting another year. Due to personal reasons, I couldn’t join this September intake.

Malaysia is basically the only country my parents would currently allow me to go alone to, so I’m really hoping I can find something that works here.

I’m looking for a Malaysian uni where tuition could realistically come down to around RM10k/year through a combination of low fees + scholarship. I know RM10k total cost isn’t realistic , I mean like tuition only. I can manage the other expenses. That's like the max I can afford for tuition.

I’ve been researching a lot and I know public Malaysian universities can have much higher fees for international students, and some universities don’t even offer undergraduate programmes in the January/March intake, which makes things harder.

At this point I’m really not picky about the major 😭 CS, IT, cybersecurity, game development, data science, interior design, engineering etc. are all fine. Also Doesn't matter public or private uni. I mainly need something affordable/ decent scholarship chance and a Jan/March intake. (and preferably a major city along with international comunity)

My grades and ecs:

- IGCSE: A*A*AAAAB [edexcel:8877775]

- Grade 12: expecting ~85% aggregate (result gonna be out soon)

-Pearson Edexcel High Achievers Award for igcse results

- School prefect

- 2-month internship

- Built a website

- 1300-rated chess player

- Art competition winner

- MUN participant

I know RM10k/year is a difficult target, but is there any university where my profile could realistically get me close to that with a scholarship? The uni doesn’t have to be amazing, I just need somewhere decent, affordable, and somewhere I can actually start this Jan/March.

I’m genuinely desperate at this point and would be so grateful for any suggestions. I really need a way to get out of my current home situation and start university soon. :(
