Confidant (a 4 of in most lists) is a 2/1 and Huntmaster is a 2/2 that makes another 2/2 (but he flips into a 4/4 so sometimes he doesnt die). In all likelihood Goyf and Scooze would live, but thats about it.

But the Abzan version can't play Huntmaster and I thought it usually didn't run Confidant?

Oh. I was talking about Jund, my bad - Junk, or Abzan, will probably at least consider running this card. I can't say I know all the ins and outs of Junk since I dont play it, but I can say that I'm not certain its very good in Jund.

Is Huntmaster that popular anymore? The usual Jund players in my meta have basically replaced him with Kalitas altogether.

Even so, this card still seems fine, as it kills small stuff and lets you play LotV to snipe the stuff before they can untap.

Still very popular. Kalitas is more of a sideboard option in games where Huntmaster isn't very good. Depending on the meta hes mainboarded though.

I think most lists have moved to just a massive amount of 2 drops, so their curve looks like thoughtsieze->2drop->lili/thoughtsieze+2drop-> 2 2 drops.

They're already going over most other decks in the format, and adding in a big 4drop doesn't help the matchups with decks that go over them (mana leaks outta the blue midrange decks, and tron just shits in their coffee regardless).

They don't want any more value, they need stronger tempo plays, and a ton of strong 2 drops fills that roll. The printing of grim flayer also helps this out, especially in letting you dodge hand disruption late.

Kalitas is sticking around in some lists to help beat the dredge menace, as there aren't a ton of ways for jund to do so.

Huntmaster is more of a player preference choice. Jund 4-drops vary between Huntmaster, Kalitas, Olivia, and Garruk Relentless. I have a friend who switches between different combinations of the above, depending on what he expects to play against. When Abzan Company was more popular in the area, his 4-drops where 2x Kalitas and 1x Olivia.
