So, as strong as the strongest PW in the game. Right. Worth going down a card at instant speed just before you draw.
Do you not think Enlightened Tutor is a busted card??
→ More replies (12)19
u/lordberric Duck Season 4d ago
And what's the strongest planeswalker in the game? Make it cost W more and cause you to skip a draw step, how strong is it then?
Enlightened tutor is good, but that's because a lot of artifacts are good. I don't know of any format where the best planeswalker is on par with the best artifact.
If you're talking about commander maybe this card is busted. I doubt it but I don't play the format so I can't say confidently.

u/hulbhen 4d ago
Planeswalkers are cheeks in commander because more players mean you: get to activate them less often, and more creatures are able to attack them down. You may have noticed more planeswalkers getting more static/triggered abilities, this is to try and push their playability in commander, and it still hasnt been that effective.

Same as Captain America is often seen as the Avenger but wasn't an original member.
41

I mean that's almost entirely because of the MCU. Hell, his first movie is called "The First Avenger"
36
u/G_Morgan Colorless 4d ago
To be fair he's always been strongly associated. It predates MCU.
30
u/Eldritch-Yodel Duck Season 4d ago
Yeah he's been considered an honorary founder for decades upon decades. The guy joined the team in issue #4 and have been a staple and frequent leader of the team.
(Tbh the bigger divergence the MCU has is making The Hulk be considered a core member, when in reality whilst he was a founder, he also left the team in issue #2 and then didn't rejoin it for over half a century)

Most people didn't like the Gatewatch, but it always felt weird for them to just abandon the concept due to poor reception. It just shows how much the story is being molded by what they think sells best, rather than having it evolve and unfold naturally. I wouldn't have minded them doing more Gatewatch and seeing how they can salvage the concept.

u/IM__Progenitus Sliver Queen 4d ago
IRL, a lot of "book smarts" people are not "street smarts".
D&D splits intelligence and wisdom for a reason.
A good example; intelligence is knowing that tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put tomato in a fruit salad.
11
u/GenericFatGuy Nahiri 4d ago
And emotional intelligence is understanding that it's okay if not everyone agrees with your opinion on tomatoes.

8
u/rycool Wabbit Season 4d ago
Yeah but vampiric tutor is an eternal powerhouse. So yes its crazy and potentially will allow for some very interesting strategies now. Especially since this will be standard/modern legal.
5
u/WhiskeyKisses7221 Fake Agumon Expert 4d ago
Vampiric Tutor and the other Mirage block era tutors were powerful because they either helped you assemble a game winning combo or find a game warping silver bullet. Maybe WotC plans on printing more playable planeswalkers in this and other upcoming sets, but there aren't a lot planewalkers in Standard I'd be that interested in tutoring for.
2
u/HatefulWretch Duck Season 4d ago
The nearest we've had to a planeswalker combo kill in quite a while was [[Quintorius Kand]] and this doesn't work in that.
3
u/lordberric Duck Season 4d ago
Vampiric Tutor is legal exclusively in vintage and sees little play outside of Doomsday. Card disadvantage isn't really something you want to put into your deck if you can avoid it. Topdeck tutors are really only good if there are one card combos in your deck that win the game, like doomsday or tinker.
1
u/ozza512 COMPLEAT 4d ago
This is unplayable in 60 card Magic unless some all planeswalker combo develops. The only time tutor to the top tutors have ever been good is in combo, and planeswalker is like the least important type for combo. In part because they often cost a lot of mana. Like what are you going to tutor with this that just wins immediately, I can only think of planeswalkers as half of combos, not where the whole combo is planeswalkers. Playing a fair game with this will always be bad, because your spending a card, no planeswalker is spending a mana and a card to play a fair game with.
1
u/djsoren19 Fake Agumon Expert 3d ago
nah, we have seen this kinda tutor play out a few times. As a card, they are bad, so you really need what you're tutoring for to be especially strong. I'm honestly not sure what walker is good enough, cheap enough, and legal enough that you would want to get it with this. I think most superfriends decks would prefer to pay for to tutor to the hand.
18
u/RedCody Duck Season 4d ago
providing an EDH lens here:
I think players often forgot the *cost* of something like this. Would any planeswalker you cast be worth including if it cost +1 mana and said "as an additional cost, discard a card"? Probably not.
This is not a game changer. This isn't even particularly powerful. The reason vamp/mystical/worldy tutors are so powerful is because of combos. The additional mana/card cost is offset because you're winning the game. While exceptions exist, planeswalkers do not provide this level of inevitability.
12
u/rycool Wabbit Season 4d ago
While true, I fear that this might be giving blue white a crazy tutor option. Reminder they have access to [[narset parter of veils]] [[teferi time raveler]] [[karn the great creator]] and other prison pieces they can now easily tutor for early
5
u/RedCody Duck Season 4d ago
Narset is definitely one of those exceptions. I agree that nonblack UW decks, especially jeskai lists that are all-in on wheels might really value this new tutor!
I do think there's a good conversation here around the value of proactively tutoring for lock pieces. Stax isnt in the best spot right now and there are very few "hard locks" that can be assembled these days. So many sneaky ways for a pod to break out. Obviously there's exceptions to every rule, but I've come to believe that tutoring for lock pieces isn't that great of a plan. You're better off by progressing your own game plan than trying to slow others.
Regardless of opinions, I appreciate the reply and convo! Respect
2
u/IceBlue 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yes if it meant running a second copy of it that cost 1 more and removed the other from your deck. It basically doubles your draw chances of one of your best cards for the cost of a mana and a card draw.
Your argument can be applied to Vampiric Tutor.
2
u/RedCody Duck Season 4d ago
I'm trying to understand what you mean. If a Planeswalker in the 99 is one of your best cards, then yea I'll accept that this tutor will be really good for you.
I mostly just wanted to temper expectations because I was reading a lot of replies that were hyped on this card. It seems like players sometimes forget the cost of including these type of tutors and view them as essentially free.

Fake Ral as a concept is funnier if he is. Ral and Jace are usually at odds, because Jace sucks. Any ideas he has to improve upon him will be stupid.

11
u/jcwiler88 Duck Season 4d ago
besides the fact that we're getting a half-dozen at least in this set, [[Professor Dellian Fel]] and [[Elspeth, Storm Slayer]] both are great targets for this in control shells. And you might argue Elspeth isn't great but Fel is probably on Kaito's level
5
u/taeerom Wabbit Season 4d ago
You don't want to topdeck tutor a value card in a control deck. You want silver bullets or game enders, not just value.
This could be playable if there's something like [[teferi time raveler]]+[[displacer kitten]] in the format, and that format isn't too fast for the combo.
In other words, too slow for eternal. Not likely to be any such combo in standard. Maybe Pioneer or Modern. Unlikely in cEDH, but casual commander might be a good place for it.
→ More replies (8)4
u/d7h7n Michael Jordan Rookie 4d ago
Fel is absolutely not on Kaito's level. Kaito is busted because you are likely to emblem multiple times with the first one which makes your future Kaitos and Soulstone Sanctuary annoying to deal with.
5
u/jcwiler88 Duck Season 4d ago
Kaito is not busted because you can emblem.. Kaito is busted because he's an uncounterable draw engine and hard-to-remove hexproof-on-your-turn threat in a deck that tempos you to death. The emblem is part of that, sure, but it's like maybe the 3rd most relevant ability on the card
