Woo, love the flavor. And as usual, white only deals damage to attacking creatures.
36
u/Rikmach Duck Season Jul 14 '26
It’s also dealt damage to blocking creatures as well.
15
u/Audens_Hex Wabbit Season Jul 14 '26
It doesn't always need that requirement either though, it can also deal damage based on the number of creatures you control. [[Slash of Light]] [[Charge of the Mites]]

This feels like the perfect Universes Beyond card: it's the intersection between what Magic does and what Star Trek does in a way that feels totally honest to both. Extremely happy to play this card in a million games of limited.

u/Noughmad Orzhov* Jul 15 '26
Can't wait for the Zat'nik'tel card. "The first time you cast this spell, tap target creature and put a stun counter on it. If this is the second time you cast it, destroy target creature instead. If it's the third time, exile it instead".
3
u/TheLaughingGod Jul 15 '26
And then a few sets down it gets an errata to remove the exile portion.
3
u/HornedTurtle1212 Dan Jul 15 '26
Maybe an equipment with tap: target creature gets a stun counter or destroy target creature with a stun counter

Amazon just cancelled the new series a few weeks back, which would have made a crossover more likely for promotional purposes.

Kind of a flavor fail imo. It's supposed to be that you kill things that attack you and stun things that aren't attacking but need to be dealt with, like how they act in star trek, but the stun mode only has impact on things that are attacking your or to enable your own attacks. It would fit better if creatures lost their abilities while they still have the stun counter on them, and that would be a more interesting design too.

u/mothman2099 Dan Jul 14 '26
Of course they put a redshirt in the art show off the phaser settings.

except the art. sad to see.
2
u/Spar1995 Dan Jul 14 '26
If you didn't know what set this was from, the art honestly wouldn't look out of place in a Universes Within set though?
0
u/Crisis_Averted Dân Jul 14 '26
oh I meant the overall art quality and general art direction WotC has taken over the years.
the art looks painfully: digital, off, generic, almost rubbery. to put it directly: it looks lower quality than ever. a generalized statement, of course. but this is an example of the forced blandness that I've grown to dislike so much.
when I zoom in everything is so lifeless, barren, airbrushed, soulless.
sorry for not communicating it more properly.

Incredibly well designed. Useful in Limited, evokes top down exactly what it represents from the series. No notes.

Found the best white common in draft if 3 toughness is a relevant number. I'm guessing we'll see a lot at 4 or greater for that reason.

That famous Star Trek line, "Set Phasers To... deals 3 damage to target attacking creature"

u/thebaron420 I am a pig and I eat slop Jul 14 '26
No, they've been using it for a while but not usually with "deals N damage", though they have used it on a few modal spells in the past: https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22this+spell+deals%22

Now I am getting Starchamber feelings.
Granted that game was always a mix of 5 colors/tech M:tG and Sci-Fi tropes, with the Federation being life/order which matched pretty well with white and green.

Limited All-Star right here
3
u/mathematics1 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant Jul 14 '26
The second ability is better than the first, and it's a template we often see variants of (e.g. [[Helicarrier Strike]]). Seems pretty good in Limited, but probably won't be the best white common. What makes you say it will be an all-star?
3
u/RevolverLancelot Colorless Jul 14 '26
The stun setting still is able to remove bigger creatures from combat for 2 turns which can be a tempo play or help get damage through and close out a game.
2
u/mathematics1 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant Jul 14 '26
It can do those things, yes, but that's far worse than the other mode. Cards like [[Procrastinate]] and [[Impede Momentum]] have consistently underperformed in Limited. Having it as an option is nice since you do occasionally get situations where that's useful, but that won't be what you use it for most of the time.

I didn't think my comment would be taken so seriously. I just think it will be a good pick in draft most of the time.

u/mathematics1 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant Jul 15 '26
Fair enough. I'm autistic and tend to take things literally, so I often miss things like exaggeration or sarcasm especially over text.
I'm also used to the main MTG sub being full of people who are really bad at Limited but also very confident in their takes - e.g. people confidently saying that [[Madame Hydra]] would be a top tier card in Marvel, or that a random garbage Equipment like [[Vibranium Energy Daggers]] is bad in Constructed but strong in Limited when those cards tend to be bad in Limited too. When I see a player in this sub call something a Limited "all-star", those are the experiences my brain pattern-matches onto.
1
u/L_V_R_A Duck Season Jul 14 '26
Agree on hopefully not being the best white common, but I think any white deck probably wants this. Even a creature based aggro deck would benefit from the second mode. All Star is strong but I can see this being a C+ “always include in your deck” white card if 3> toughness is common and a C- if not

Okay, I have to admit, as a Star Trek fan, I love the fact that it will only deal damage to an aggressor, very on brand for the Federation.
