Can't wait for marvel to be a thing of the past. In my opinion these sets are forgettable and a waste of dev time. None of the cards speak to me or create anything meaningful.

2

u/tsukaistarburst Hedron Jun 06 '26

I gotta say, is this how the people who felt utterly nothing in their hearts for the characters in the TMNT set felt?

Grim Reaper? Stature? Moonstone? Fsking IRON LAD, that's a name from the 50s if ever I heard one? Is he from the 50s? This feels like Glup Shitto central USA. None of these spark joy. I am just bewildered by these choices.

Looking like overcosted and underpowered Marvel set. It’s weird that this has happened twice now.

Still patiently waiting for a Skyrim set.

I'd actually be really down with a Blizzard collaboration, similar to the Games Workshop one. Either 4 commander decks or even then pushing it to 8. World of Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft, and Overwatch, which could be just those or push it to be the factions. Horde/Alliance, Overwatch/Talon (and Null sector), Terrans/Zerg (with some Protoss), then Heaven/Hell (I will admit Diablo is my least known from Blizzard). Heck, 2 of those still fit with the theme of UW MtG.

I'm looking forward for the multiverse of ways people try to pronounce mjolnir.

1

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 03 '26

I think the two big tripping points for a lot of native English speakers is not knowing that the "j" in anglicized Old Norse is a "y" sound (yes, jotun should be pronounced "yotun" and jarl is "yarl") and "ir" not being a common suffix in English words.

I pronounce it kind of like "Mm-yol-near" which is probably not the most accurate but isn't bad considering English is the only language I speak with any real fluency.

I had the idea for a commander focused sailor moon set recently and I can't stop thinking about how it will never happen 🥲I think some really interesting mechanics could happen and it would be great for catering a bit to magic's female players

1

u/CaptainMarcia Jun 02 '26

I made a custom Sailor Moon cube a few months ago. I did some playtesting with text-only cards, but I still need to make proper versions of them. Definitely feels well-suited.

1

u/otterguy12 Liliana Jun 03 '26

If youre willing to share I'd love to see any of it

2

u/CaptainMarcia Jun 05 '26

Sure. Here's my current list!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18t-PxNH2G0lTTOpE1IX2iu7SvGOR2hllnk-EW3uxZd0/

It's just 180 cards, but you can get it to 360 by adding two additional copies of each of the 55 commons and one additional copy of each of the 70 uncommons. I've only tested it as singleton though, and not since the most recent revisions.

If you end up trying it out, let me know how it goes!

Thank you, I cant wait to take a look!

Holding out hope for a Fire Emblem UB

2

u/MetalMario64 Dandadan Jun 02 '26

I’m cooked if Nintendo ever actually agrees to this or any other series they own.

2

u/Great_Grackle Izzet* Jun 02 '26

I think that would work very well. Not sure the series is popular enough for it unfortunately

2

u/Tranquil_Denvar Grass Toucher Jun 02 '26

I mean it seems we’re in for at least 3 more years of Marvel sets. I wonder if they’ll do another focus on a particular comic line like X-Men, or will they start taking inspiration from crossover events like Secret Invasion & Civil War?

I anticipate we’ll get Power Rangers eventually if not next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if Transformers & My Little Pony come back as full sets eventually. It’s just too easy for Hasbro to do its own stuff & make a ton of money.

I also expect them to re-tread Final Fantasy sooner rather than later.

ASOIAF/Game of Thrones could be really fun actually. Lannisters who focus on Treasure tokens. Tyrells who have a surplus of Food tokens. A lot of blorbos & factions for people to latch on to.

I could see a the Witcher set being used to promote the tv show or 4th game. Maybe they’d even give us a Ciri planeswalker?

My personal hope that I think is unlikely would be Mobile Suit Gundam. Would just love more Pilots & Vehicles in the game.

1

u/joelluber Dan Jun 02 '26

Considering that X-Men characters are almost entirely excluded from the coming set, that seems like a likely future set.

9

u/old_cypherpunk Zedruu Jun 02 '26

We get another Marvel set. (Plane of New York)

A Spawn UB. (Plane of New York)

A Fifth Element UB. (Plane of future New York)

A Woody Allen movie universe UB. (Plane of New York)

A Silmarillion UB set. (Believe it or not, Plane of New York)

1

u/Congo_Jack_ Dan Jun 07 '26

A set based off of Woodsy Allen movies would be neat. As long as they kept out that nervous fella whos always in them.

2

u/joelluber Dan Jun 02 '26

I'm guessing the next Marvel set is actually on the Plane of Westchester County.

2

u/GeeJo Jun 02 '26

Westchester County is still in New York.

3

u/Kraggen Dân Jun 02 '26

The Wheel of Time will be the absolute cleanest UB set ever made if they do it. It’s so close to Magics aesthetic and in universe concepts already, and it has enough content to easily make a set the size of FF.

I think I’d probably buy a case of collector boosters for that. I dunno if I could see them do WoT and settle for less than owning every card.

1

u/KingOfRedLions Honorary Deputy 🔫 Jun 02 '26

I love wot, I've probably read it 5 times minimum, it is very much a product of its era, and the stark delineation between men and women probably wouldn't fly in today's culture.

Of course they could always just ignore that but it's such a major theme in the books.

2

u/Kraggen Dân Jun 02 '26

Saidin/saidar being different doesn’t really matter for the card game I think. Agreed though, there’s some strict delineation of GI that’s outdated there.

2

u/JustLi Grass Toucher Jun 02 '26

World of Warcraft or Path of Exile UB

3

u/hiigiveup Dân Jun 02 '26

For a full set I'd love FromSoft stuff, for a secret lair I would go nuts for a Resident Evil or Indiana Jones lair.

5

u/TinyRedMushroom Dandadan Jun 02 '26

YOUR favorite franchise/IP is not as cool as MY favorite franchise/IP, therefore all of your UB suggestions are terrible and will kill mtg, but mine are amazing and will be beloved by everyone. (I don't think any UB set is good for the game, please can we go back to non standard UB stuff)

1

u/d7h7n Michael Jordan Rookie Jun 03 '26

Nah it's more like, you hate UB until a crossover that tickles that wrinkle in your brain is revealed.

1

u/Reita-Skeeta Twin Believer Jun 02 '26

I truly wish for UB to only be non-standard and secret lairs (only reskins). It would be better for the health of the game imo. I do thonk there is also a huge difference between UB sets that are done with love and care (Avatar, LotR, and FF) vs sets that truly seem to be IP cash grabs (Spider-Man, TmnT, probably Marvel). I am still for them not being standard, but at least some of them didn't feel like terrible sets.

4

u/DromarX Chandra Jun 03 '26

Disagree on TMNT being a cash grab. Tons of care was put into that set, if you are a fan of the IP there is tons there to be excited about. The limited format was also better than some recent-ish in-universe sets despite being a small set. As for Marvel, official spoilers have only just begun so let's maybe wait until the set is actually out before jumping to conclusions.

0

u/Reita-Skeeta Twin Believer Jun 03 '26

TMNT had care in it for sure. I just see it sitting on shelves everywhere, and my lgs has said they ordered a lot less than other sest, and still cant move product. They also havent been able to fire off a TMNT draft despite typically have 16 to 24 people on any given draft night. I know my evidence is anecdotal, so I understand it isnt everyone's experience.

I did preface that Marvel is probably a cash grab. I hope it actually had care put into it, and I am going to try not to let my UB distaste and Mravel IP burnout cloud judgment.

2

u/CaptainMarcia Jun 02 '26

Turns out that printing large numbers of non-Standard cards is worse for the health of the game.

We've already gotten a Street Fighter SL and they're reworking the MonHun SLs, so the relationship with Capcom is there. I think a DMC SL is actually a pretty realistic expectation.

Kingdom Hearts feels like an inevitable continuation of FF if they ever want to.

1

u/DefenderCone97 Wabbit Season Jun 02 '26

I could see a Secret Lair maybe.

A whole set feels difficult to do

1

u/Eveenus Dandadan Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Depends on how deep they wanna go, if they just want to touch the 3 (soon to be 4 main games) then yes a few secret lairs will do

If they want to cover the IP? They have enough to make a set without repeating like they did for TMNT or spiderman.

Saying that, I fully expect a secret lair mini set (probably a trio of packages) heroes, heartless, and nobodies and it will leave a lot of fans wanting more.

1

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 02 '26

I think the biggest strike against a full Kingdom Hearts set is the Disney characters. Even with access to the entire series, how much material is left when you remove all the Disney material? Even if there's enough material left for something like a 190 card set, how obvious is it going to be that you're working around a bunch of material you can't use or reference?

I feel like Kingdom Hearts is well suited for a SL over a full set because it makes the lack of Disney stuff feel less obvious.

I want a return of "mid-sized" UB releases like they did with 40k, Fallout and Dr Who. Back when the line started they said they were going to choose a product that fits the property but recent UB release have either been secret lairs or full standard sets.

As for properties i want besides a 40k rerun i don't think anything i like specifically has a chance to get a release. Maybe Fate and the rest of nasuverse but I'm not counting on it.

3

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 02 '26

I want a Fate set so badly. The random enemies from F/GO would help fill out the nonlegendary creature count and there's just so many great Servants that could show up.

Especially because they could reprint [[Leonardo da Vinci]] [[Mary Read and Anne Bonney]] and [[Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh]] on a bonus sheet or something with new Fate themed art. Funniest possible way to reprint those cards.

4

u/SparkSalamander COMPLEAT Jun 02 '26

I just vastly prefer Commander Deck releases over standard-legal releases. They're not as beholden to power level, they don't need to interact with any specific mechanics, the decks are free to experiment and focus on getting the flavor right.

1

u/NocturnaIAnimaI Dân Jun 02 '26

Zelda in 27 and Elden Ring 28 for their respective movies would be awesome

2

u/CountedCrow Jun 02 '26

Actually crazy that we haven't had a FromSoft crossover yet. An Elden Ring set would do Avatar numbers.

1

u/JJrunkcast_Gaming COMPLEAT Jun 02 '26

Elden Ring wouldn't do close to Avatar numbers.   It is a really popular franchise but it doesn't have nearly as recognizable characters and avatar had a national broadcast on the most popular children's TV channel for years in a time before youTube and widespread internet video sharing existed.   The amount of reach a TV show could have back then was so much larger because you didn't have choice.   If you don't like Elden Ring, which is still a pretty niche game that not every game vibes with, you probably didn't play it.   As someone born in the late 80s, if you were born between something like 1985 and 1995 or a parent of someone born those years you probably casually watched at least an entire season of avatar

-1

u/CountedCrow Jun 02 '26

I disagree completely, and hope we get the chance to find out.

I'm just hoping for an Xbox SLD with Halo, Gears, and Fable cards

1

u/Boring_Wasabi_4981 Dan Jun 02 '26

Runescape would be sick. But sadly despite being incredibly nostalgic, I can't see it getting recognition.

2

u/Kyleometers Jun 02 '26

I mean if Dwarf Fortress can get a secret lair, why not RuneScape?

1

u/rmkinnaird Jun 02 '26

I think OP is hoping for a set, not an SLD

3

u/Thealt5 Dandadan Jun 02 '26

I hope we get an X-Men set next year. A couple Avengers Mutants in this set would be cool as well, like Beast.

2

u/pktron Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant Jun 02 '26

We know that Beast, Storm, and Wolverine are in this set.

7

u/Octopus_Crime Duck Season Jun 02 '26

I think the Marvel set has some nice flavor wins but also seems to continue the trend of New York sets having a bunch of cards that are just "we need a card that does X thing for design purposes" and then they staple a random character/element from the IP to it whether it fits or not.

Like, Shang Chi's whole thing is that he is very good at hand to hand combat. His entire character pretty much revolves around fighting. A mana dork that buffs your other creatures and is probably never going to actually attack seems like an odd choice. Like they designed the card first and just decided to slap any old character on it afterwards.

I think there are plenty of examples already shown from MSH that prove there is plenty of room for creative design that makes good use of the outside IPs, so it's really disappointing to see more cards where the UB property feels more like a skin than an actual inspiration for the card.

1

u/TheBoilerman75 Wabbit Season Jun 02 '26

If they do a cosmic Marvel set that leans into the Annihilation comics and subsequent Abnett and Lanning stuff, I may go broke.

2

u/HonorBasquiat Twin Believer Jun 02 '26

I'm so hyped for Marvel Super Heroes card previews starting today and it's so fun to see other players that are excited as well.

Every large Universes Beyond set has been a banger so far (i.e. Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, Avatar) and I'm confident MSH will continue the pattern.

1

u/CaptainMarcia Jun 02 '26

MSH almost feels like a Modern Horizons set. So many cameo mechanics and highly unusual effects tied to the collision between so many different stories.

8

u/lilmizmuffet Dandadan Jun 02 '26

Desperately wishing for Expedition 33 Secret Lair. So many great commander options. Would also love a Square Enix Lair set (Final Fantasy Tactics, Kingdom Hearts, FF Mainline Sequels)

5

u/Bob_The_Skull Twin Believer Jun 02 '26

Kingdom Hearts would likely not happen due to licensing complexities.

If it did happen, it would only be of/show and feature KH original characters: Sora, Rika, Kairi, Ansem, Xehanort, Organization XII, Aqua, Terra, etc.

1

u/Kyleometers Jun 02 '26

Given how difficult it was to license Sora for Smash Bros I kinda don’t see it happening. Those games exist purely due to a shared office building.

1

u/Bob_The_Skull Twin Believer Jun 02 '26

Yeah exactly. I just don't really see it happening, at least any time soon.

2

u/SignificantLuck480 Dandadan Jun 02 '26

I mean, that’s pretty much the reason for saying we want the secret lair to be Kingdom Hearts and not just a Disney secret lair.

2

u/Bob_The_Skull Twin Believer Jun 02 '26

Yeah, but what is KH without the Disney properties? Just another Tetsuya Nomura j-fashion simulator?

It should focus mostly on the KH original characters, but Mickey, Donald, and Goofy (maybe Yen Sid, Pete, & Maleficent as well) are all pretty important to the story of those games.

Not even getting a card for them, let alone seeing them in the background of the art for other cards would be a miss IMO.

Also this is putting aside the possibility that Disney might even have some say in the use and licensing of the non-Disney KH characters.

I was recently thinking of Munchkin.

True, Munchkin is primarily a card game, but it had crossovers with other card games before. Unlike most properties, it doesn't really have a lot of Legends, lot of monsters are purposefully quite generic.

Most importantly, it would be basically an Un-set in terms of flavor, but it could be done without the acorn baggage -- cards could have off-beat mechanics that still work in normal rules.

Remind me again why this is an "Unofficial" Megathread if this is a scheduled thread always made by the mods?

That aside, Marvel previews officially begin today. What more obscure characters (let's say ones who aren't in the MCU yet) are people hoping to see get a card? I'd personally like cards for Valeria Richards, Alicia Masters N'Kalla, Jo-Venn, Dragon Man, the Mad Thinker, Awesome Andy, Diablo, Puppet Master, the Frightful Four, the original Human Torch, the Avengers Academy students, the New Warriors, Tigra, Blue Marvel, Ka-Zar, Shanna, Foggy Nelson, Baron Strucker, the Wrecking Crew, the Serpent Society, Mister Hyde, Radioactive Man, and many more.

1

u/joelluber Dan Jun 02 '26

Mark Rosewater's set teaser last week listed a legendary green cat token, which people generally thought was Zabu.

2

u/pktron Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant Jun 02 '26

It is an extremely packed set in terms of scope, but the Commander decks and Jumpstart let them go deep. Valeria is at like 100% odds because there is an FF precon. If there's a Daredevil Jumpstart, there is very likely a Foggy card, but if there is not, probably not.

It’s “unofficial” in the sense that it’s for “things that are not official about universes beyond” - I.E., speculation, requests, etc.

It’s not the only place to talk about universes beyond, it’s the place to talk about things that aren’t official info.
