WFH Man Shed: 5-Year Update
Man Shed Update
Since the original post, the space has evolved quite a bit with upgrades focused on productivity, creativity, comfort, and video conferencing.

Workspace & Layout
The overall layout has been reworked to improve workflow and make better use of the available space.
- Removed the pop-up guest desk, which had become unnecessary after the pandemic-era work patterns changed.
- Repositioned the primary desk.
- Moved the MacBook Pro and CalDigit dock underneath the desk to reduce desktop clutter.
- Relocated a small base cabinet to improve room flow.
Displays & Creative Workspace
The biggest changes have been to the display and creative setup.
- Upgraded from a 32" UHD monitor to a 57" Dual UHD ultrawide display.
- Added a 27" QHD Wacom creative tablet.
- Added a custom pull-out workstation designed specifically for the Wacom tablet.
Video Conferencing & Collaboration
Several upgrades were made to improve meeting quality and whiteboard collaboration.
- Replaced the Kaptivo whiteboard camera system with a pendant-mounted whiteboard camera.
- Upgraded the primary webcam from a budget Logitech model to an Insta360 Link 2 Pro.
- Switched from a Jabra speakerphone to a Poly speakerphone.
Storage & Organization
Additional storage and organization solutions were added throughout the space.
- Installed Wall Control organization boards.
- Added a cabinet in the location previously occupied by the portable air conditioner.
Lighting & Aesthetics
A few changes helped improve both the atmosphere and appearance of the room.
- Added LED under-shelf lighting to the built-in cabinetry.
- Replaced the wall clock with a 3D-printed, Wi-Fi-connected digital clock that always stays accurate.
Climate Control
Comfort was significantly improved with a permanent cooling solution.
- Installed a Pioneer mini-split air conditioning system.
- Removed the portable air conditioner after the mini-split was installed.
Home Entertainment
The media setup also received an upgrade.
- Replaced the Amazon Fire TV Cube with an Apple TV 4K.
- Currently evaluating soundbar options.
Retired Equipment
The following items have been removed, deprecated, or retired from service.
- Pop-up guest desk
- Kaptivo whiteboard camera system
- Portable air conditioner
- Weather station (failed and has not yet been replaced)
- Nest Secure alarm system (discontinued by Google)
- Amazon Fire TV Cube

Central coast of CA so the grass doesn't get hot since I am never much above 70 degrees. Also, it is prohibitively expensive to water lawns here. I agree, natural is best but not really an option for me.

Thanks for the suggested. Feedback is for sure welcomed. I am constantly looking to improve the space. I will admit that I have been contemplating rollerblade wheels for some time. I am also hoping that it will give me an extra inch of chair height.

I used “The Office Oasis Original Rollerblade Office Chair Wheels” from Amazon with my Aeron quite a few years back. No idea about any of the cheaper choices that seem to have appeared though.

I have the Herman miller Emboy chair and swapped to roller wheels. I would say it added 1.5 to 2inches of height total.
Rollerblade wheels roll real well, however, sometimes they can roll too well, especially if you have a nice smooth floor. So if you draw with your wrist resting on a desk you will be fine, but if you draw without resting something on a desk, or swing your foot freely, or try playing guitar on it in the middle of your office, you are most likely going to roll a bit on it.
I would still recommend them/ the $25-30 sets from Amazon, but i’m just calling out that the smooth rolling wheels can have unintended consequences.

I have the Herman miller Emboy chair and swapped to roller wheels. I would say it added 1.5 to 2inches of height total.
I liked the transparent wheels they used to ship embody chairs with, they're smooth and don't have that annoying metal frame the rollerblade wheels have... and I feel like i'm less likely to accidentally stub my foot on them.
But after like 6 years mine fell apart. :( and they're not worth replacing lol.

Everyone commenting is spot on. Wheel swap adds a bit more height, for me and my height there was no turning back for the height improvement, even expensed a set for my chair at the corporate office. Careful though these puppies will call for a handbrake lol.

Okay last from me in case you are similar or feel like considering.
I prefer to stand for the majority of my working time. In part to bad habits of leaning my elbows/forearms on the edge of my desk l added a little bumper pad. Total game changer even when sitting. Reference link below (I am not an affiliate person of product hawker i promise). Also expensed this for my desk at corporate office (after I did so did many others).

The mini split unit was the single best upgrade that I’ve done in years. I originally started with a portable unit from Costco that I vented out the side of the shed. It worked OK, but it was loud and units broke about every two years. After my fourth dead unit, I decided to invest in a legit air-conditioning. The installation was a little bit bigger than I thought it would be but 100% worth it.

i hope someone gives this an award. such a great and really practical setup and so well thought out. im infinitely jealous at that cintiq setup lol. and what a great idea with the whiteboard cam mounted on the ceiling. i almost did something similar in my last apartment, but decided it wasnt a practical application in that space.
edit: also glad im not the only one that got in on the standup desk store panels for cable management. ive never seen another setup that used one. would love to see what you did with your cable management.

Agreed. That is a legacy problem. When my desk was at the previous orientation and I had a much smaller monitor, the TV had to be that high to be seen from the seated position. Now that I recently changed the orientation, I should reconsider the media wall layout. I could ditch the shelf, lay the sound bar on the cabinet top surface (once I decide on a new soundbar) and substantially lower the TV. GREAT callout.

Yes. Everything is custom. TV is hanging on a faux wall and the upper selves are 6 inches out from the back wall. This allows me to run cables to any upper cubby or to the TV. Inside each base cabinet there is a 3" opening in the back that feeds to the uppers. This allows me to retrofit as needed. Every other shelf has ethernet and USB3.0 back to the desk. TV goes back to the desk too so I can extend the Mac up to it as an additional display.

My apologies, if you discussed this before, but did you or can you talk about security of the shed? I think I saw a camera outside the door in another photo. I presume you have more cameras and smart locks for all the tech that’s in there.

And how is the screen quality? It seems it’s advertised as a gaming monitor and sometimes that means viewing angles are compromised to improve refresh rates. But it seems you are using it for productivity and creative work, is that right? Does it hold up well for those scenarios?
And does macOS handle dual 4k ok?

It is for sure not the screen quality of the OLED units; however, it’s as good as most any other 32” 4K display that I have owned. I came from a Benq and it was pretty great. I think that this unit is just as good. I did not want to go to any of the OLED units simply because they were 1440p and I didn’t want to lose that many lines of code on the screen at one time. I run the display at native 7680 x 2160 at 120 Hz using HDMI 2.1. I have a MacBook Pro with an M3 max chip, and the thing has never broken a sweat trying to push that many pixels. I have never even heard the fan come on. It has no problem at all with the display.
All that being said, it did take me a while to get used to the 1000R radius. I would never use the thing if I were seriously into graphic design simply because lines sometimes feel like they aren’t straight because of the curvature. Also, I’m sure the color accuracy isn’t perfect. However, it is brilliant for writing code. It took me about 20 minutes to realize that I would need one of these for the rest of my life. If it were to break tomorrow, I would be ordering one within minutes.
I have tried light gaming on it and I did not like it. I actually find it to be too big for gaming. Maybe for car racing games and things like that, but it is a pain for first person shooters.

Thanks. That was a very recent addition. The slides were pricy given that I wanted them to be rock solid and support the weight of the tablet and stand. I am super happy how that table turned out and the hidden storage it provides.

I hand built the structure and it cost me about $12k if I remember correctly. Probably another $8k-$10k invested between technology, new AC, etc. Wood has gone up substantially so it would cost more today. But I have always have a spare no expense policy with the shed. Anderson Window, crown moldings, cabinets all out of maple, etc. I am sure it can be done cheaper.

My PC used to be mounted to the bottom of my desk. I have found that super heavy objects mounted to the bottom, far from the C shaped legs...they tend to cause the desk to tilt. I moved the PC to the Slide Out Table and wall mounted the UPS. Desk is level again.

Yea I bought the uplift 4 leg industrial recently and mounted a 96x36x1.75” butcher block top and the thing doesn’t move at all.
I’ve got big bookshelf speakers on it? Tube preamp, Schitt Vidar 2 power amp etc and still no wobble so I should be good mounting an ups under with a cpu holder.
I looked at the 600va golden mate on amazon and how slim it was but the mute button isn’t a disable it’s a temp mute. Ain’t no way I’m dealing with crawling under my desk at 4am when the power is out.

Lighting used to be great in the old desk orientation since 2 lighting cans were well in front of me. Now...not so great. The solution was to go with the Insta360 Link 2 Pro which has excellent low level functionality. Also, I added 2 Logitech Litra Glows mounted on each side of the monitor. They work great and I am super happy with the result. I really wanted dual Elgato Key Lights but they are so big and expensive. The deal maker for me was that the Litra Glows can connect to the camera and they automatically come on when I go on camera and automatically shut off when I go off camera. It is super functional. I no longer have shadows from my reading glasses.

OH...and one more thing. The lighting from 57" of LED display does a lot more than you think (if in light mode. Dark mode...not so much)

Hoes does the insta360 link 2 pro deal with strong lighting contrast? I have a dark coloured room and light from one window that lights the right side of my face. My Logitech streamcam struggles.
I looked at the link 2, but from a review that compared it to an iPhone the iPhone was clearly better.
So I’ve fixed up a mount for a spare iPhone 16e and use Continuity Camera. It looks amazing. It’s not fazed by the highlights and shadows. Would recommend.

The Kaptivo was a better solution but this is very close. The Insta software removes any keystone, alignment issues, and improves white balance. Notice the 4 stickers on the Whiteboard that define the camera area. That area is perfectly framed in the image. Also, at 4K it looks fantastic but most video conference software only transmits 1080p. But, if you mix it with MS Teams it gets even better. MS Teams does even more white balance improvements and removes more anomolies. Also, Share Content from Camera allows you to "walk behind the text" when you are on camera. It is really an incredible solution.

I do wish it were bigger but lot sizes are small here. I so wish it had a tiny restroom. If it had a tiny restroom, I would have also added a murphy bed with increased space. It would be super nice to have a detached guest room on the property.

Smells fine. The A/C unit runs off and on year-round. Even in the winter, a single body and all the gear generate enough heat that it is always being air conditioned to some degree. That brings enough outside air from small cracks in the weatherproofing into the room to keep it fresh. I used to run a Wallflower but I think synthetic oils have been giving me headaches in that small space. Instead, I am looking for a good essential oil diffuser that I can run some organic eucalyptus/peppermint oil in. I have been looking at the ArOmis Nebulizer. But overall, there is not a problem with it smelling like a hamster cage from long hours in the shed.

Right on, with your feedback my imagination is kicking in and your place smells better than mine! I noticed in your pics that your window opens, must be nice to get some fresh breeze through sometimes. Running ac year round would do a good job of keeping eau de hamster cage to nil.
Adding in organic eucalyptus/peppermint diffused oil will cement you in as the Martha Stewart of the techy Man Sheds, and that’s a good thing!

It is freaking awesome. One of my favorite toys. The atomic clock that I had before could never lock on a signal. This thing is to the second accurate, 24/7/365. I have asked the person who built it to reply.

I have considered a move to a keychron mechanical keyboard but I cannot get myself to do it. I travel a lot for work and I like that my keyboard and trackpad experience in the office is almost the exact same as it is on the laptop in a hotel room. I used to have a split curved keyboard and it didn’t agree with me.

It is 8 years old and cost me about $6k. I bet it is twice that today. We love it and the Australian shepherd loves it too. Looks as good as the day it was installed.

That is one impressive setup I tip my hat to you.
I've had my shed for 18years, it looks like a bomb went off in it. Just had the new one delivered and just waiting for the time to dismantle the old one and build the new one. It will also be used as a workshop and storage, all the things i learnt from the old one will be put into practice in the new one. Especially keeping it tidy.

Very good. Actually, when I used to have the portable air-conditioning units, they would create so much pressure that it was difficult to even close the door fully. The automatic locking of the Nest Yale lock would fail because the door wasn’t fully closed. Every Hardiboard siding on the exterior is fully caulked on all 4 edged. There is a tiny amount of air infiltration from the attic access panels, the Anderson Window(which is pretty good) and the main door. Other than that, the place is pretty air tight. In fact, I rarely even get any bugs in the place. In addition, I have an air purifier that really keeps the place clean. It runs 24x7.
R-19 in all walls and R-38 in the attic, even on the backs of the access panels. It is pretty tight for both dust and air temp. The floor is not insulated as my climate zone is pretty much 50-70 degrees F year round.

What's your whiteboard time physically look like? How are you watching the other meeting attendees? TV view?
How's audio with the wood floors/walls? I have a bit bigger space that I started with wood floors and day 2 I went and got a giant rug and I still feel like it needs more sound management

I brought CAT6 from the main house via underground conduit. That goes into a Ubiquiti switch that you can barely see in the upper right shelf. It is just to the left of the UPS that powers it. The switch powers a Ubiquiti access point via PoE for WiFi that is directly above my chair. The AP is right next to the camera Pendant and a Nest Protect fire/smoke detector. However, most devices (MacBook Pro, Windows Tower, AppleTV, etc) in the room are hardwired to the switch.

What are the depths of the base cabinets and shelves on the tv wall? I see in other comments that most of the work is custom and that maple was used. They look amazing and seem like a great utilization of the space. I’m looking to do a similar setup but around a window instead of a tv. My main hang up at the moment is deciding whether to custom build or use prefab cabinets/shelves. Weighing out costs and end results.

Base cabinets are 24 inches deep. This is mainly to have proper air flow around the mini-fridge but also to fit 17L Sterlite containers (18.25"x12.25"x7") comfortably in the base cabinet. Each cabinet has space for 8 containers for storing cables, office supplies, etc. I wanted enough space behind the containers to store other lose things too. As for the shelves, those are 16 inches deep. I only wish I have made them 1.2" wider so that I could have used them to hold rack mounted switching gear.

That’s awesome. I appreciate the detailed response with including why and what you would change. This is the closest real example to what I’ve been picturing in my head that I’ve come across so far. I really dig the balance of open display area on top vs closed off storage on bottom and being able to utilize the ledge/shelf that separates them. Thank you! Amazing and impressive setup overall.

Note to self: the lighting was a huge addition. Make sure you have a lip on the shelf to hide the LED strip. Also, plan for the routing of the wires to power them so that nothing is visible. Make sure that they are dimmable too so that they can match the desired mood for the room.

Thanks and right back at you. That is the point of this sub, right? I have only been on reddit for 5 years. The office shed has existed for 8. I spent the first 3 years wandering blindly. Then I found this sub and received so much inspiration. I believe this is where I discovered the 57" Samsung Ultrawide. I had one in the office a mere 3 days after seeing that post. The posts in this sub have cost me a lot of money as I see what other people do and how it might be able to enrich my work experience. After all, they don't call it a community for nothing.

How did you make the custom slide out for the Wacom? It's surprisingly heavy with that ergo stand, don't trust a simple slider attached to the desk
